41 [a] “Can you draw out (A)Leviathan[b] with a fishhook
    or press down his tongue with a cord?
Can you put (B)a rope in his nose
    or pierce his jaw with (C)a hook?
Will he make many pleas to you?
    Will he speak to you soft words?
Will he make a covenant with you
    to take him for (D)your servant forever?
Will you play with him as with a bird,
    or will you put him on a leash for your girls?
Will traders bargain over him?
    Will they divide him up among the merchants?
Can you fill his skin with harpoons
    or his head with fishing spears?
Lay your hands on him;
    remember the battle—you will not do it again!
[c] Behold, the hope of a man is false;
    he is laid low even at the sight of him.
10 No one is so fierce that he dares to stir him up.
    Who then is he who can stand before me?
11 (E)Who has first given to me, that I should repay him?
    (F)Whatever is under the whole heaven is mine.

12 “I will not keep silence concerning his limbs,
    or his mighty strength, or his goodly frame.
13 Who can strip off his outer garment?
    Who would come near him with a bridle?
14 Who can open the doors of his face?
    Around his teeth is terror.
15 His back is made of[d] rows of shields,
    shut up closely as with a seal.
16 One is so near to another
    that no air can come between them.
17 They are (G)joined one to another;
    they clasp each other and cannot be separated.
18 His sneezings flash forth light,
    and his eyes are like (H)the eyelids of the dawn.
19 Out of his mouth go flaming torches;
    sparks of fire leap forth.
20 Out of his nostrils comes forth smoke,
    as from a boiling pot and burning rushes.
21 His breath (I)kindles coals,
    and a flame comes forth from his mouth.
22 In his neck abides strength,
    and terror dances before him.
23 The folds of his flesh (J)stick together,
    firmly cast on him and immovable.
24 His heart is hard as a stone,
    hard as the lower millstone.
25 When he raises himself up, the mighty[e] are afraid;
    at the crashing they are beside themselves.
26 Though the sword reaches him, it does not avail,
    nor the spear, the dart, or the javelin.
27 He counts iron as straw,
    and bronze as rotten wood.
28 The arrow cannot make him flee;
    for him, sling stones are turned to stubble.
29 Clubs are counted as stubble;
    he laughs at the rattle of javelins.
30 His underparts are like sharp (K)potsherds;
    he spreads himself like (L)a threshing sledge on the mire.
31 He makes the deep boil like a pot;
    he makes the sea like a pot of ointment.
32 Behind him he leaves a shining wake;
    one would think the deep to be white-haired.
33 (M)On earth there is not his like,
    a creature without fear.
34 He sees everything that is high;
    he is king over all the (N)sons of pride.”

Job's Confession and Repentance

42 Then Job answered the Lord and said:

“I know that you can (O)do all things,
    and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.
(P)‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’
Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand,
    things (Q)too wonderful for me, which I did not know.
‘Hear, and I will speak;
    (R)I will question you, and you make it known to me.’
I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear,
    but now my eye sees you;
therefore I despise myself,
    and repent[f] in (S)dust and ashes.”

The Lord Rebukes Job's Friends

After the Lord had spoken these words to Job, the Lord said to Eliphaz (T)the Temanite: “My anger burns against you and against your two friends, for you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has. Now therefore take (U)seven bulls and seven rams and go to my servant Job and (V)offer up a burnt offering for yourselves. And my servant Job shall (W)pray for you, for I will accept his prayer not to deal with you according to your folly. For you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has.” (X)So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went and did what the Lord had told them, and the Lord accepted Job's prayer.

The Lord Restores Job's Fortunes

10 And the Lord (Y)restored the fortunes of Job, when he had prayed for his friends. And the Lord gave Job (Z)twice as much as he had before. 11 Then came to him all his (AA)brothers and sisters and all who had (AB)known him before, and ate bread with him in his house. And they (AC)showed him sympathy and comforted him for all the evil[g] that the Lord had brought upon him. And each of them gave him (AD)a piece of money[h] and (AE)a ring of gold.

12 And the Lord blessed (AF)the latter days of Job more than his beginning. And he had (AG)14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys. 13 He had also (AH)seven sons and three daughters. 14 And he called the name of the first daughter Jemimah, and the name of the second Keziah, and the name of the third Keren-happuch. 15 And in all the land there were no women so beautiful as Job's daughters. And their father gave them an inheritance (AI)among their brothers. 16 And after this Job lived 140 years, and (AJ)saw his sons, and his sons' sons, four generations. 17 And Job died, an old man, and (AK)full of days.

Book One

The Way of the Righteous and the Wicked

Blessed is the man[i]
    who (AL)walks not in (AM)the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in (AN)the way of sinners,
    nor (AO)sits in (AP)the seat of (AQ)scoffers;
but his (AR)delight is in the law[j] of the Lord,
    and on his (AS)law he meditates day and night.

He is like (AT)a tree
    planted by (AU)streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
    and its (AV)leaf does not wither.
(AW)In all that he does, he prospers.
The wicked are not so,
    but are like (AX)chaff that the wind drives away.

Therefore the wicked (AY)will not stand in the judgment,
    nor sinners in (AZ)the congregation of the righteous;
for the Lord (BA)knows (BB)the way of the righteous,
    but the way of the wicked will perish.

The Reign of the Lord's Anointed

(BC)Why do (BD)the nations rage[k]
    and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth set themselves,
    and the rulers take counsel together,
    against the Lord and against his (BE)Anointed, saying,
“Let us (BF)burst their bonds apart
    and cast away their cords from us.”

He who (BG)sits in the heavens (BH)laughs;
    the Lord holds them in derision.
Then he will speak to them in his (BI)wrath,
    and terrify them in his fury, saying,
“As for me, I have (BJ)set my King
    on (BK)Zion, my (BL)holy hill.”

I will tell of the decree:
The Lord said to me, (BM)“You are my Son;
    today I have begotten you.
Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,
    and (BN)the ends of the earth your possession.
You shall (BO)break[l] them with (BP)a rod of iron
    and dash them in pieces like (BQ)a potter's vessel.”

10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise;
    be warned, O rulers of the earth.
11 (BR)Serve the Lord with (BS)fear,
    and (BT)rejoice with (BU)trembling.
12 (BV)Kiss (BW)the Son,
    lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,
    for his (BX)wrath is quickly kindled.
(BY)Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

Job

42 Then Job replied to the Lord:

“I know that you can do all things;(AM)
    no purpose of yours can be thwarted.(AN)
You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?’(AO)
    Surely I spoke of things I did not understand,
    things too wonderful for me to know.(AP)

“You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak;
    I will question you,

My ears had heard of you(AR)

Therefore I despise myself(AT)

Epilogue

After the Lord had said these things to Job(AW), he said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “I am angry with you and your two friends,(AX) because you have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has.(AY) So now take seven bulls and seven rams(AZ) and go to my servant Job(BA) and sacrifice a burnt offering(BB) for yourselves. My servant Job will pray for you, and I will accept his prayer(BC) and not deal with you according to your folly.(BD) You have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has.”(BE) So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite(BF) did what the Lord told them; and the Lord accepted Job’s prayer.(BG)

10 After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes(BH) and gave him twice as much as he had before.(BI) 11 All his brothers and sisters and everyone who had known him before(BJ) came and ate with him in his house. They comforted and consoled him over all the trouble the Lord had brought on him,(BK) and each one gave him a piece of silver[d] and a gold ring.

12 The Lord blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the former part. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys. 13 And he also had seven sons and three daughters. 14 The first daughter he named Jemimah, the second Keziah and the third Keren-Happuch. 15 Nowhere in all the land were there found women as beautiful as Job’s daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance along with their brothers.

16 After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. 17 And so Job died, an old man and full of years.(BL)

BOOK I

Psalms 1–41

Psalm 1

Blessed is the one(BM)
    who does not walk(BN) in step with the wicked(BO)
or stand in the way(BP) that sinners take(BQ)
    or sit(BR) in the company of mockers,(BS)
but whose delight(BT) is in the law of the Lord,(BU)
    and who meditates(BV) on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree(BW) planted by streams(BX) of water,(BY)
    which yields its fruit(BZ) in season
and whose leaf(CA) does not wither—
    whatever they do prospers.(CB)

Not so the wicked!
    They are like chaff(CC)
    that the wind blows away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand(CD) in the judgment,(CE)
    nor sinners in the assembly(CF) of the righteous.

For the Lord watches over(CG) the way of the righteous,
    but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.(CH)

Psalm 2

Why do the nations conspire[e]
    and the peoples plot(CI) in vain?
The kings(CJ) of the earth rise up
    and the rulers band together
    against the Lord and against his anointed,(CK) saying,
“Let us break their chains(CL)
    and throw off their shackles.”(CM)

The One enthroned(CN) in heaven laughs;(CO)
    the Lord scoffs at them.
He rebukes them in his anger(CP)
    and terrifies them in his wrath,(CQ) saying,
“I have installed my king(CR)
    on Zion,(CS) my holy mountain.(CT)

I will proclaim the Lord’s decree:

He said to me, “You are my son;(CU)
    today I have become your father.(CV)
Ask me,
    and I will make the nations(CW) your inheritance,(CX)
    the ends of the earth(CY) your possession.
You will break them with a rod of iron[f];(CZ)
    you will dash them to pieces(DA) like pottery.(DB)

10 Therefore, you kings, be wise;(DC)
    be warned, you rulers(DD) of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear(DE)
    and celebrate his rule(DF) with trembling.(DG)
12 Kiss his son,(DH) or he will be angry
    and your way will lead to your destruction,
for his wrath(DI) can flare up in a moment.
    Blessed(DJ) are all who take refuge(DK) in him.
