22 エリファズの再度の演説。
2 「人は少しでも神の役に立つことがあるのだろうか。
最高の知恵者でさえ、自分の役に立つだけだ。
3 あなたが正しいからといって、全能者は喜ぶだろうか。
あなたが完全だからといって、
神の得になるだろうか。
4 罰を受けているのは、あなたが正しいからだろうか。
5 とんでもない。悪いからこそ罰せられるのだ。
あなたの罪は底なしなのだ。
6 あなたは、相手の着ている物を
みな担保に取らなければ、
困っている友人に金を貸さなかったのではないか。
彼らから身ぐるみはぎ取ったに違いない。
7 のどが渇ききっている者にも水を飲ませず、
飢えている者にもパンを与えなかったに違いない。
8 ところが、権力者には欲しい物は何でもくれてやり、
金持ちには好きな所に住まわせた。
9 気の毒な未亡人を手ぶらで追い返し、
みなしごの腕をへし折った。
10-11 だから今、突然の恐れに取りつかれ、
暗闇と戦慄の波にのまれるのだ。
12 神は、天や星よりも高い所にいる偉大なお方だ。
13 ところが、あなたは言う。
『だから神には、私のしていることが見えないのだ。
暗闇が覆っているのに、
正しいさばきなどできるわけがない。
14 黒雲に取り巻かれて、神には何も見えない。
神は、はるかかなたの空の上を、
のんびり散歩しているだけなのだから。』
15-16 昔ながらの罪の道を歩いている者は早死にし、
その人生の土台は押し流されることがわからないのか。
17 彼らは神に言った。
『じゃまだから離れてくれ。
全能者と言っているのに、
何の役にも立たないではないか。』
18 私だったら、口が裂けてもこんなことは言えない。
彼らは、神が良い物をいっぱい下さったことを
忘れている。
19 そこで今度は、
正しい者が悪者の滅びるのを眺める番だ。
潔白な者は悪者をあざけり笑う。
20 彼らは口々に言う。
『見るがいい。敵の最後の一人が火で滅ぼされた。』
21 神に口答えするのはやめることだ。
いさぎよく和解することだ。
そうしたら、心に安らぎが訪れる。
間違っていたことを素直に認めれば、
神のいつくしみがある。
22 神の教えに耳を傾け、それを心にたくわえるのだ。
23 神に立ち返り、いっさいの悪を閉め出せば、
あなたは元どおり栄える。
24 金銭欲を断ち切り、取っておきの黄金を捨てれば、
25 全能者があなたの宝となり、
神が貴重な銀となるのだ。
26 そのとき、あなたは主の恵みを感じて喜び、
神を見上げる。
27 祈れば神が答えてくれるので、
あなたも神への約束をみな果たすようになる。
28 望むことはすべて実現し、
あなたの進む道には天の光がさす。
29 たとい攻撃され、打ち倒されても、
必ずまた高い地位に戻される。神は謙遜な者を救い、
30 あなたのきよい手で、罪人をさえ助けるのだ。」

Eliphaz
22 Then Eliphaz the Temanite(A) replied:
2 “Can a man be of benefit to God?(B)
Can even a wise person benefit him?(C)
3 What pleasure(D) would it give the Almighty if you were righteous?(E)
What would he gain if your ways were blameless?(F)
4 “Is it for your piety that he rebukes you
and brings charges against you?(G)
5 Is not your wickedness great?
Are not your sins(H) endless?(I)
6 You demanded security(J) from your relatives for no reason;(K)
you stripped people of their clothing, leaving them naked.(L)
7 You gave no water(M) to the weary
and you withheld food from the hungry,(N)
8 though you were a powerful man, owning land(O)—
an honored man,(P) living on it.(Q)
9 And you sent widows(R) away empty-handed(S)
and broke the strength of the fatherless.(T)
10 That is why snares(U) are all around you,(V)
why sudden peril terrifies you,(W)
11 why it is so dark(X) you cannot see,
and why a flood of water covers you.(Y)
12 “Is not God in the heights of heaven?(Z)
And see how lofty are the highest stars!
13 Yet you say, ‘What does God know?(AA)
Does he judge through such darkness?(AB)
14 Thick clouds(AC) veil him, so he does not see us(AD)
as he goes about in the vaulted heavens.’(AE)
15 Will you keep to the old path
that the wicked(AF) have trod?(AG)
16 They were carried off before their time,(AH)
their foundations(AI) washed away by a flood.(AJ)
17 They said to God, ‘Leave us alone!
What can the Almighty do to us?’(AK)
18 Yet it was he who filled their houses with good things,(AL)
so I stand aloof from the plans of the wicked.(AM)
19 The righteous see their ruin and rejoice;(AN)
the innocent mock(AO) them, saying,
20 ‘Surely our foes are destroyed,(AP)
and fire(AQ) devours their wealth.’
21 “Submit to God and be at peace(AR) with him;(AS)
in this way prosperity will come to you.(AT)
22 Accept instruction from his mouth(AU)
and lay up his words(AV) in your heart.(AW)
23 If you return(AX) to the Almighty, you will be restored:(AY)
If you remove wickedness far from your tent(AZ)
24 and assign your nuggets(BA) to the dust,
your gold(BB) of Ophir(BC) to the rocks in the ravines,(BD)
25 then the Almighty will be your gold,(BE)
the choicest silver for you.(BF)
26 Surely then you will find delight in the Almighty(BG)
and will lift up your face(BH) to God.(BI)
27 You will pray to him,(BJ) and he will hear you,(BK)
and you will fulfill your vows.(BL)
28 What you decide on will be done,(BM)
and light(BN) will shine on your ways.(BO)
29 When people are brought low(BP) and you say, ‘Lift them up!’
then he will save the downcast.(BQ)
30 He will deliver even one who is not innocent,(BR)
who will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands.”(BS)

7 ある日、ユダヤ人の宗教的指導者たちが数人、イエスを調べてやろうと、わざわざエルサレムから出向いて来ました。 2 そして、イエスの弟子の中に、ユダヤの食前のしきたりを守らない者がいるのを見つけました。 3 そのしきたりというのは、ユダヤ人の中でも、特にパリサイ人たちがやかましく守っているものでした。古くからの言い伝えで、食事の前には必ず、腕からひじにかけて水を注ぐ決まりだったのです。 4 また市場から帰って来た時には、食べ物に触れる前に必ず体に水を注ぎかける決まりもありました。そのほかにも、水差し、なべ、皿を洗うことなど、何世紀ものあいだ守り続けてきた、こまごまとしたおきてやしきたりがあったのです。 5 そこで、彼らはイエスに、「どうしてあなたの弟子は、昔からの言い伝えを守らないのか。手も洗わないで食事をするとはけしからん」と言って、詰め寄りました。
6 イエスはお答えになりました。「そう言うあなたがたこそ偽善者です。預言者イザヤが言ったのは、あなたがたのことだったのです。
『彼らは口先ではわたしを敬うが、
心はわたしから遠く離れている。
7 彼らがわたしを拝んでも、むだなことだ。
神の命令の代わりに、
人間の規則を教えているのだから。』（イザヤ29・13）
なんと的を射たことばでしょう。
8 あなたがたは神のほんとうの戒めをないがしろにして、自分たちの言い伝えとすり替えているのです。 9 それを守るために、よくも神の戒めを捨て、踏みにじったものです。
10 モーセは、『あなたの父と母とを敬え』（出エジプト20・12）という戒めを神から託され、あなたがたに伝えました。また、『父や母をののしる者は死刑に処せられる』（出エジプト21・17）とも言いました。 11-12 ところがどうです。あなたがたときたら、父や母に、『すみませんが、助けることはできません。差し上げるはずのものは神にささげてしまいました』と言いさえすれば、助けを求める両親をおろそかにしてもかまわない、と教えているのです。 13 あなたがたは自分たちのつくった言い伝えを守るために、神のことばを空文化しているのです。そして、ほかにも同じようなことをたくさんしているのです。」
14 イエスは、もう一度群衆を呼び寄せて、「さあ、よく聞いて、その意味を考えなさい。 15-16 人は決して外から入る食べ物によって汚されるのではありません。むしろ、内から出て来ることばや思いによって汚されるのです」と言われました。
17 それから群衆と別れ、家に入られました。すると弟子たちが、「さっきのおことばは、どういう意味でしょうか」と尋ねました。
18 イエスはお答えになりました。「あなたがたまでわからないのですか。食べ物は人を汚さないということが、そんなに不思議なのですか。 19 いいですか。食べ物は人の心に入るわけではないでしょう。腹に入って、外へ出るだけではありませんか。」イエスは、あらゆる食べ物がきよいものであることを示し、 20 さらに続けて言われました。「人の内側から出るもの、それが問題です。 21 肉欲、盗み、殺人、姦淫、 22 貪欲、邪悪、あざむき、好色、ねたみ、悪口、高慢、あらゆる愚かさ、それらのものはみな、人の心の中からあふれ出ます。 23 この内側から出て来るものが人を汚し、神にふさわしくない者とするのです。」
広まるイエスのうわさ
24 イエスはガリラヤを去り、ツロとシドンの地方に行かれました。人目を避けて旅していましたが、いつものように、イエス来訪のニュースは、あっという間に広がってしまいました。
25 自分の小さな娘が悪霊につかれて困っていた母親が、うわさを聞いて駆けつけました。彼女はイエスの前にひれ伏すと、 26 娘から悪霊を追い出してくださいと懇願しました。実は、この女はスロ・フェニキヤ人で、ユダヤ人から見れば、軽蔑すべき「外国人」でした。
27 イエスは女に言われました。「わたしはまず、同胞のユダヤ人を助けなければなりません。子どもたちのパンを取り上げて、小犬に与えるのはよくないことです。」
28 「おっしゃるとおりでございます。でも先生、食卓の下の小犬だって、子どもたちのパンくずは食べるではありませんか。」
29 この答えにイエスは感心しました。「実に見上げたものです。さあ、安心して家にお帰りなさい。悪霊はもう、娘さんから出て行きました。」
30 女が家に戻ってみると、娘は静かに床に横たわっており、すでに悪霊は出たあとでした。
31 イエスはツロをあとにし、シドンからデカポリス地方を通って、ガリラヤ湖畔にお帰りになりました。 32 その時、人々が、耳も聞こえず、口もきけない男をイエスのところに連れて来て、「どうぞ、手を置いて治してやってください」と頼みました。
33 イエスはその男を群衆の中から連れ出し、自分の指を彼の両耳に差し入れ、それからつばをして、彼の舌にさわられました。 34 そして、天を見上げてふっと息をつき、「開け」とお命じになりました。 35 するとどうでしょう。男の耳は聞こえるようになり、舌のもつれもとけて、はっきり話せるようになったではありませんか。
36 イエスは群衆に、うわさを広めないようにと堅く口止めされましたが、そう言われれば言われるほど、人々はかえって言い広めました。 37 イエスのなさったことにあきれ驚いたからです。人々は、「ああ、なんてすばらしいことをなさるお方だろう。耳が聞こえず、口もきけない人さえお治しになった！」と言い合いました。

That Which Defiles(A)
7 The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus 2 and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were defiled,(B) that is, unwashed. 3 (The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders.(C) 4 When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.[a])(D)
5 So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders(E) instead of eating their food with defiled hands?”
6 He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:
“‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
7 They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.’[b](F)
8 You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”(G)
9 And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe[c] your own traditions!(H) 10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’[d](I) and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’[e](J) 11 But you say(K) that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)— 12 then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. 13 Thus you nullify the word of God(L) by your tradition(M) that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.”
14 Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. 15 Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.” [16] [f]
17 After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him(N) about this parable. 18 “Are you so dull?” he asked. “Don’t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them? 19 For it doesn’t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.” (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods(O) clean.)(P)
20 He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles them. 21 For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed,(Q) malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”
Jesus Honors a Syrophoenician Woman’s Faith(R)
24 Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre.[g](S) He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret. 25 In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit(T) came and fell at his feet. 26 The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.
27 “First let the children eat all they want,” he told her, “for it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”
28 “Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”
29 Then he told her, “For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.”
30 She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.
Jesus Heals a Deaf and Mute Man(U)
31 Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre(V) and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee(W) and into the region of the Decapolis.[h](X) 32 There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk,(Y) and they begged Jesus to place his hand on(Z) him.
33 After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit(AA) and touched the man’s tongue. 34 He looked up to heaven(AB) and with a deep sigh(AC) said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means “Be opened!”). 35 At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.(AD)
36 Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone.(AE) But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. 37 People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

8 そのころ、またおびただしい群衆が集まって来ましたが、みんなの食べる物がなくなったので、 2 イエスは弟子たちを呼んで言われました。「この人たちはかわいそうに、もう三日もわたしといっしょにいるのだから、食べ物はとっくにないはずです。 3 このまま帰らせたら、きっと途中で倒れてしまいます。それに遠くから来た人もいるでしょうから。」
4 「でも、先生。こんな寂しい所で、これほど大ぜいの人たちのために、いったいどこで食べ物を手に入れるのですか。」
5 「パンは幾つありますか。」「七つです。」
6 イエスは、群衆に地べたに座るようにお命じになりました。そして七つのパンを取り、神に感謝の祈りをささげてから、ちぎって弟子たちに手渡され、弟子たちはみなに配りました。 7 また、小さい魚が少しばかりあったので、これも同様に祝福してから、人々に配るよう弟子たちに手渡されました。
8-9 こうして、全員が満腹するほど食べました。それからイエスは、人々を家にお帰しになりました。その日集まった人の数はおよそ四千人でしたが、あとでパン切れを拾い集めると、なんと七つのかごいっぱいになりました。
ダルマヌタ地方へ
10 このあとすぐ、イエスは弟子たちと舟でダルマヌタ地方へ向かわれました。 11 その地方のパリサイ人たちはイエスが来たと知り、議論をふっかけてやろうと、勇んでやって来ました。「奇跡を見せたらどうだ。天から不思議なしるしが現れでもしたら、あなたを信じようじゃないか。」
12 このことばに、イエスは思わず、ため息をおつきになりました。「いったいどれだけ奇跡を見れば気がすむのですか。」
13 イエスは彼らを残してまた舟に乗り、湖の向こう岸に渡られました。 14 ところが、弟子たちが出発前に食べ物を用意するのをうっかり忘れたので、舟の中にある食べ物といえば、一かたまりのパンだけでした。
15 舟の中で、イエスは弟子たちに、厳粛な表情で、「ヘロデ王とパリサイ人たちのパン種（彼らの誤った教えと偽善）に気をつけなさい」と言われました。 16 弟子たちは、「先生は、なぜあんなことをおっしゃったんだろう」と首をかしげ、結局、パンを持って来なかったからだろうということに話が落ち着きました。
17 弟子たちがそのことで互いに議論し合っているのを聞いて、イエスは言われました。「いや、そんなことではありません。まだわからないのですか。なんとものわかりの悪い人たちなのでしょう。 18 目も耳も持っているのに、見えも聞こえもしなかったのですか。何も覚えていないのですか。 19 五つのパンを五千人に食べさせた時、余ったパン切れは幾かごになりましたか。」「十二かごです。」 20 「では、七つのパンで四千人に食べさせた時は？」「七かごです。」
21 「それなのに、まだあなたがたは、パンがないのをわたしが苦にしていると思うのですか。」
22 一行がベツサイダに到着すると、人々が盲人の手を引いて来ました。「どうか、さわって治してやってください」と頼むので、 23 イエスはその盲人の手を取り、村の外へ連れ出されました。そして彼の両眼につばをつけ、手をあてて、「どうですか、何か見えますか」とお尋ねになりました。 24 男はあたりをきょろきょろ見回しながら、「は、はい、見えます。人が見えます。ぼんやりしていますが……。まるで、木が歩いてるみたいです」と答えました。 25 イエスはもう一度、両眼におさわりになりました。男はじっと見つめていました。するとだんだん視力が回復し、すべてのものがはっきり見えるようになりました。
26 イエスは男を家族のもとへ帰し、「村へは行かないように」と注意されました。
イエスこそ救い主
27 イエスの一行はガリラヤを去り、ピリポ・カイザリヤの村々へ行きました。その道々、イエスは弟子たちに、「人々は、わたしのことをだれだと言っていますか」とお尋ねになりました。
28 「バプテスマのヨハネだと言う者もいれば、エリヤだと言う者もいます。また昔の預言者が生き返ったと言う者もいます」と、弟子たちは答えました。
29 するとイエスは、「では、あなたがたは、わたしをだれだと思っているのですか」とお尋ねになりました。即座にペテロが、「あなたこそキリスト（ギリシャ語で救い主）です」と答えました。 30 ところがイエスは、このことをだれにも話してはいけないと、きびしく言われました。
31 それから、やがてご自分が経験する恐ろしい出来事――長老、祭司長、ユダヤ人の指導者たちに捨てられ、殺され、三日目に復活すること――を弟子たちに話し始められました。 32 それも、実にはっきりとお話しになったので、ペテロはイエスをわきに呼び、「そんなことをおっしゃるものではありません」といさめました。
33 イエスはふり返って弟子たちを見ながら、非常にきびしい口調でペテロに言われました。「下がれ、サタン！ あなたはただ人間的な見方をして、神のことを考えてみようともしていません。」
34 それから、弟子たちと群衆とを呼び寄せ、こう言われました。「だれでもわたしについて来たければ、自分中心の生活をやめ、自分の十字架を負って、わたしについて来なさい。 35 自分のいのちを守ることばかりにとらわれている者は、それを失います。わたしと福音とのためにいのちを捨てる者が、いのちを得るのです。
36 たとえ全世界を自分のものにしても、いのちを失ったら、何の得があるでしょう。 37 いのちを買い戻すどんな手だてがあるというのでしょう。 38 この不信仰と罪の時代にあって、わたしとわたしのことばとを恥じるなら、メシヤであるわたしも、やがて父の栄光を帯びて聖なる天使と共に帰って来る時、そのような者を恥じるのです。」

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand(A)(B)(C)
8 During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said, 2 “I have compassion for these people;(D) they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. 3 If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.”
4 His disciples answered, “But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?”
5 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.
“Seven,” they replied.
6 He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people, and they did so. 7 They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them.(E) 8 The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.(F) 9 About four thousand were present. After he had sent them away, 10 he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha.
11 The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven.(G) 12 He sighed deeply(H) and said, “Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to it.” 13 Then he left them, got back into the boat and crossed to the other side.
The Yeast of the Pharisees and Herod
14 The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. 15 “Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast(I) of the Pharisees(J) and that of Herod.”(K)
16 They discussed this with one another and said, “It is because we have no bread.”
17 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened?(L) 18 Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”
“Twelve,”(M) they replied.
20 “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”
They answered, “Seven.”(N)
21 He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”(O)
Jesus Heals a Blind Man at Bethsaida
22 They came to Bethsaida,(P) and some people brought a blind man(Q) and begged Jesus to touch him. 23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit(R) on the man’s eyes and put his hands on(S) him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”
24 He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”
25 Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26 Jesus sent him home, saying, “Don’t even go into[a] the village.”
Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah(T)
27 Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”
28 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;(U) others say Elijah;(V) and still others, one of the prophets.”
29 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”(W)
30 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.(X)
Jesus Predicts His Death(Y)
31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man(Z) must suffer many things(AA) and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,(AB) and that he must be killed(AC) and after three days(AD) rise again.(AE) 32 He spoke plainly(AF) about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!”(AG) he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
The Way of the Cross
34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.(AH) 35 For whoever wants to save their life[b] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.(AI) 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man(AJ) will be ashamed of them(AK) when he comes(AL) in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
