“Call now; is there anyone who will answer you?
    To which of (A)the holy ones will you turn?
Surely vexation kills the fool,
    and jealousy slays the simple.
(B)I have seen the fool taking root,
    but suddenly I cursed his dwelling.
His children are (C)far from safety;
    they are crushed in (D)the gate,
    and there is no one to deliver them.
The hungry eat his harvest,
    and he takes it even out of thorns,[a]

For affliction does not come from the dust,
    nor does trouble sprout from the ground,

“As for me, I would seek God,
    and to God would I commit my cause,

10 he gives (I)rain on the earth
    and sends waters on the fields;

    and those who mourn are lifted to safety.
12 He (K)frustrates the devices of the crafty,

    and the schemes of the wily are brought to a quick end.
14 They meet with darkness in the daytime

    and from the hand of the mighty.
16 So the poor have hope,
    and (O)injustice shuts her mouth.

17 “Behold, (P)blessed is the one whom God reproves;

18 For he wounds, but he (S)binds up;
    he (T)shatters, but his hands heal.
19 He will (U)deliver you from six troubles;
    in seven no (V)evil[d] shall touch you.
20 (W)In famine he will redeem you from death,
    and in war from the power of the sword.
21 You shall be (X)hidden from the lash of the tongue,
    and shall not fear destruction when it comes.
22 At destruction and famine you shall laugh,
    and shall not fear (Y)the beasts of the earth.
23 For you shall be in league with the stones of the field,
    and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with you.
24 You shall know that your (Z)tent is at peace,
    and you shall inspect your fold and miss nothing.
25 You shall know also that your (AA)offspring shall be many,
    and your descendants as (AB)the grass of the earth.
26 You shall come to your grave in (AC)ripe old age,
    like a sheaf gathered up in its season.
27 Behold, this we have (AD)searched out; it is true.

Job Replies: My Complaint Is Just

Then Job answered and said:

“Oh that my vexation were weighed,
    and all my calamity laid in the balances!
For then it would be heavier than (AE)the sand of the sea;
    therefore my words have been rash.
For (AF)the arrows of the Almighty are in me;
    my spirit drinks their poison;
    the terrors of God are arrayed against me.
Does the wild donkey bray when he has grass,
    or the ox low over his fodder?
Can that which is tasteless be eaten without salt,
    or is there any taste in the juice of the mallow?[f]
My appetite refuses to touch them;
    they are as food that is loathsome to me.[g]

“Oh that I might have my request,
    and that God would fulfill my hope,
that it would (AG)please God to crush me,
    that he would let loose his hand and cut me off!
10 This would be my comfort;
    I would even exult[h] in pain (AH)unsparing,
    for I have not denied the words of (AI)the Holy One.
11 What is my strength, that I should wait?
    And what is my end, that I should be patient?
12 Is my strength the strength of stones, or is my flesh bronze?
13 Have I any help in me,
    when resource is driven from me?

14 “He who (AJ)withholds[i] kindness from a (AK)friend
    forsakes the fear of the Almighty.
15 My (AL)brothers are (AM)treacherous as a torrent-bed,
    as torrential (AN)streams that pass away,
16 which are dark with ice,
    and where the snow hides itself.
17 When they melt, they disappear;
    when it is hot, they vanish from their place.
18 The caravans turn aside from their course;
    they go up into (AO)the waste and perish.
19 The caravans of (AP)Tema look,
    the travelers of (AQ)Sheba hope.
20 They are (AR)ashamed because they were confident;
    they come there and are (AS)disappointed.
21 For you have now become nothing;
    you see my calamity and are afraid.
22 Have I said, ‘Make me a gift’?
    Or, ‘From your wealth offer a bribe for me’?
23 Or, ‘Deliver me from the adversary's hand’?
    Or, ‘Redeem me from the hand of (AT)the ruthless’?

24 “Teach me, and I will be silent;
    make me understand how I have gone astray.
25 How forceful are upright words!
    But what does reproof from you reprove?
26 Do you think that you can reprove words,
    when the speech of a despairing man is (AU)wind?
27 You would even (AV)cast lots over the fatherless,
    and bargain over your friend.

28 “But now, be pleased to look at me,
    for I will not lie to your face.
29 (AW)Please turn; let no injustice be done.
    Turn now; my vindication is at stake.
30 Is there any injustice on my tongue?
    Cannot my palate discern the cause of calamity?

Job Continues: My Life Has No Hope

“Has not man (AX)a hard service on earth,
    and are not his (AY)days like the days of a hired hand?
Like a slave who longs for (AZ)the shadow,
    and like (BA)a hired hand who looks for his (BB)wages,
so I am allotted months of (BC)emptiness,
    (BD)and nights of misery are apportioned to me.
(BE)When I lie down I say, ‘When shall I arise?’
    But the night is long,
    and I am full of tossing till the dawn.
My flesh is clothed with (BF)worms and (BG)dirt;
    my skin hardens, then (BH)breaks out afresh.
My days are (BI)swifter than (BJ)a weaver's shuttle
    and come to their end without hope.

“Remember that my life is a (BK)breath;
    my eye will never again see good.
(BL)The eye of him who sees me will behold me no more;
    while your eyes are on me, (BM)I shall be gone.
As (BN)the cloud fades and vanishes,
    so he who (BO)goes down to Sheol does not come up;

    that you set a guard over me?

14 then you scare me with dreams
    and terrify me with visions,
15 so that I would choose strangling

17 (CA)What is man, that you make so much of him,
    and that you set your heart on him,

14 “Anyone who withholds kindness from a friend(CI)

15 But my brothers are as undependable as intermittent streams,(CK)
    as the streams that overflow
16 when darkened by thawing ice
    and swollen with melting snow,(CL)
17 but that stop flowing in the dry season,

18 Caravans turn aside from their routes;
    they go off into the wasteland and perish.
19 The caravans of Tema(CN) look for water,
    the traveling merchants of Sheba(CO) look in hope.
20 They are distressed, because they had been confident;

21 Now you too have proved to be of no help;

The Parable of the Ten Minas

The Triumphal Entry

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

45 (BC)And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold, 46 saying to them, “It is written, (BD)‘My house shall be a house of prayer,’ but (BE)you have made it a den of robbers.”

47 (BF)And he was teaching daily in the temple. (BG)The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people were seeking to destroy him, 48 but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were hanging on his words.

Zacchaeus the Tax Collector

19 Jesus entered Jericho(A) and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig(B) tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.(C)

When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.

All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”(D)

But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord,(E) “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything,(F) I will pay back four times the amount.”(G)

Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.(H) 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”(I)

The Parable of the Ten Minas(J)

11 While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God(K) was going to appear at once.(L) 12 He said: “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. 13 So he called ten of his servants(M) and gave them ten minas.[a] ‘Put this money to work,’ he said, ‘until I come back.’

14 “But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We don’t want this man to be our king.’

15 “He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it.

16 “The first one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’

17 “‘Well done, my good servant!’(N) his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’(O)

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(T)(U)

28 After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.(V) 29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany(W) at the hill called the Mount of Olives,(X) he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30 “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. 37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives,(AA) the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:

39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”(AD)

Jesus at the Temple(AK)

45 When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began to drive out those who were selling. 46 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be a house of prayer’[c];(AL) but you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’[d](AM)

47 Every day he was teaching at the temple.(AN) But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him.(AO) 48 Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.
