仮庵の祭りでのイエス
7 このあと、イエスはガリラヤに行き、村から村を巡回されました。ユダヤ人の指導者たちが命をつけねらっていたので、ユダヤ以外の地に身を避けようと思われたからです。 2 そうこうするうち、ユダヤの年ごとの祭りである仮庵の祭り（収穫祭とも呼ばれる祭り）が近づきました。 3 イエスの弟たちは、祭りのためにユダヤへ行くよう、しきりにイエスに勧めました。「もっとたくさんの人が奇跡を見てくれる所へ行ったらどうですか。 4 こんな所でくすぶっていても有名にはなれないよ。兄さんがそんなに偉い人だったら、世間の人に証明してみせなくては」と、半ばあざけるように言いました。 5 弟たちでさえ、イエスを信じていなかったのです。 6 「今はまだ、その時ではありません。しかし、あなたたちはいつ行ってもいいのです。 7 世間の人に憎まれるはずもありませんから。しかし、わたしは憎まれています。彼らの痛いところを突くからです。 8 あなたたちだけで行きなさい。わたしは行く時が来たら行きますから。」 9 こう言って、イエスはガリラヤに残られました。
10 しかしイエスは、弟たちが出かけたあと、人目を避けてお出かけになったのです。 11 ユダヤ人の指導者たちは、祭りの間にイエスを見つけ出してやろうと思い、「だれかイエスを見かけた者はいないか」と、やっきになって尋ね回りました。 12 確かに、イエスのことはいろいろと話題になりました。「あの方はすばらしい方だ」とほめる者もいれば、「いや違う。とんだ詐欺師だ」と非難する者もいました。 13 しかし、指導者たちの目を恐れて、表立って語る者はだれもいませんでした。
14 祭りも半ばになったころ、イエスは宮へ行き、公然と教え始められました。 15 それを聞いたユダヤ人の指導者たちは驚いて、「この男は一度も学校で学んだことがないのに、どうしてこんなに深い知識を持っているのだろう」と言い合いました。 16 そこでイエスは言われました。「わたしの教えは、自分で考え出したことではありません。わたしをお遣わしになった神の教えなのです。 17 ほんとうに神の望まれるとおりのことをしようと思う人なら、わたしの教えが神から出たものか、あるいはわたしから出たものか、はっきりわかるはずです。 18 自分の意見だけをまくし立てる人は、実はわが身がほめられたい一心なのです。しかし自分をお遣わしになった方の栄誉を求める人は、正直者です。 19 あなたがたは、自分ではモーセの律法を守らないのに、どうして律法を破ったと、わたしを非難するのですか。どうして命までつけねらうのですか。」 20 群衆が答えました。「おい、気でも変になったんじゃないか。だれがあんたを殺そうとしているんだ。」 21-23 「あなたがたは、わたしが安息日に病気の人を治したら、労働をしたと驚いています。だが、あなたがたはどうでしょうか。モーセの律法どおりに割礼（男子が生まれて八日目に、その性器の包皮を切り取るユダヤ教の儀式）を施すためには〔実際は、割礼の習慣はモーセの律法より古くからあったのですが〕、安息日でも平気で労働するではありませんか。割礼の日がちょうど安息日にあたっても、割礼を施しているではありませんか。それなら、安息日に病人を元気にしてやって、どこが悪いのでしょう。何を根拠にわたしを非難するのですか。 24 よく考えてみなさい。わたしの言うことはまちがっているでしょうか。」
25 エルサレムの人々の間では、互いにこんなことが言い交わされていました。「この人は、彼らが殺そうとねらっている人じゃないか。 26 ところが、今ここで、おおっぴらに話をしてるっていうのに、だれも何も言わないのだ。指導者たちも、結局は正真正銘のキリスト（救い主）だと認めているのかね。 27 だけど、この人がキリストのわけはないよ。どこの生まれか、身元が知れているんだから。キリストは、どこからともなく突然現れるはずだからね。」 28 イエスは宮で、大声をあげて教えられました。「皆さん。確かに、わたしの生まれも育ちもはっきりしています。しかしわたしは、あなたがたの全く知らない方の代理なのです。その方は真実です。 29 わたしはその方を知っています。その方といっしょにいたのですから。その方がわたしをお遣わしになったのです。」 30 ユダヤ人の指導者たちは、何とかしてイエスを逮捕しようと思いました。しかし、実際に手を出す者は一人もいません。まだその時ではなかったからです。 31 宮にいた人々の多くはイエスを信じ、「これだけの奇跡をなさるからには、やっぱりキリストではないだろうか」と言い合いました。
32 群衆がそう考えていると知ったパリサイ人たちは、祭司長たちと手を組んで、イエスを逮捕するために役人を差し向けました。 33 ところがイエスは、その人たちに言われました。「まだその時ではありません。もうしばらく、わたしはここにいます。そのあとでわたしは、わたしをお遣わしになった方のところに帰るのです。 34 その時には、わたしを捜しても見つけることはできません。また、わたしのいる所に来ることもできません。」 35 このことばに、ユダヤ人の指導者たちはすっかり戸惑いました。「いったいどこへ行くつもりだろう。もしかしたら、ユダヤを出て、外国のユダヤ人や、あるいは外国人に教えを伝えようとでも考えているのかもしれない。 36 だが、捜しても見つけ出せないとは、どういうことだろう。『わたしのいる所に来ることができない』というのも、何のことやらまるで見当もつかない。」
37 祭りの最後の一番大切な日に、イエスは大声で群衆に語りかけました。「だれでも、渇いているなら、わたしのところへ来て飲みなさい。 38 わたしを信じれば、心の奥底からいのちの水の川が流れ出ると、聖書に語られているとおりです。」 39 〔イエスは聖霊のことを言われたのです。聖霊は、イエスを信じる人すべてに与えられることになっていましたが、この時はまだ与えられていませんでした。イエスが天にある栄光の座に戻っておられなかったからです。〕 40 イエスがこう言うのを聞いて、群衆のうちのある者は、「この人は確かに、キリストのすぐ前に来るという、あの預言者だ」と言いました。 41-42 「この方こそキリストだ」と言いきる者もいました。しかし他方では、「いや、そんなはずはない。まさかガリラヤみたいな所からキリストは出ないだろう。キリストは、れっきとしたダビデ王の血筋で、ダビデ王の生地ベツレヘムの村に生まれると、聖書にはっきり書いてあるんだから」と主張する者もいました。 43 このように、イエスについての意見はまちまちでした。 44 中には、捕らえる機会をねらう者もいましたが、手を出すまでには至りませんでした。
45 イエスの逮捕に向かった宮の役人たちは、すごすごと祭司長やパリサイ人たちのところに戻ってきました。「どうして、やつをつかまえて来なかったのか！」指導者たちは、彼らをきびしく責めました。 46 役人たちは、口ごもりながら答えました。「は、はい。でも、あの人の話すことはとてもすばらしくて、これまで聞いたこともないような話なので……。」 47 これを聞くと、パリサイ人たちは吐き捨てるように言いました。「さては、おまえたちも惑わされたな。 48 われわれユダヤ人の議員やパリサイ人の中で、あの男をメシヤだなどと信じている者は一人もいない。 49 無知な連中は頭から信じきっているかもしれないが、やつらに何がわかるか。罰あたり者めが。」 50 その時、ニコデモが口を開きました。〔夜ひそかにイエスを訪ねた、あのユダヤ人の指導者です。〕 51 「おことばですが、取り調べもしないうちに有罪だと決めるのは、合法的ではありません。」 52 「おや、あなたも卑しいガリラヤ人なんですか。まあ、聖書を調べることですな。ガリラヤから預言者など出るはずがないことを、ご自分の目で確かめたらどうです。」
53 こうして、一同は散会し、めいめい家に帰って行きました。

Jesus Goes to the Festival of Tabernacles
7 After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want[a] to go about in Judea because the Jewish leaders(A) there were looking for a way to kill him.(B) 2 But when the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles(C) was near, 3 Jesus’ brothers(D) said to him, “Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do. 4 No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.” 5 For even his own brothers did not believe in him.(E)
6 Therefore Jesus told them, “My time(F) is not yet here; for you any time will do. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me(G) because I testify that its works are evil.(H) 8 You go to the festival. I am not[b] going up to this festival, because my time(I) has not yet fully come.” 9 After he had said this, he stayed in Galilee.
10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not publicly, but in secret. 11 Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus(J) and asking, “Where is he?”
12 Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, “He is a good man.”
Others replied, “No, he deceives the people.”(K) 13 But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the leaders.(L)
Jesus Teaches at the Festival
14 Not until halfway through the festival did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach.(M) 15 The Jews(N) there were amazed and asked, “How did this man get such learning(O) without having been taught?”(P)
16 Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me.(Q) 17 Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out(R) whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. 18 Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory,(S) but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. 19 Has not Moses given you the law?(T) Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?”(U)
20 “You are demon-possessed,”(V) the crowd answered. “Who is trying to kill you?”
21 Jesus said to them, “I did one miracle,(W) and you are all amazed. 22 Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision(X) (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs),(Y) you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath. 23 Now if a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing a man’s whole body on the Sabbath? 24 Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”(Z)
Division Over Who Jesus Is
25 At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?(AA) 26 Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities(AB) really concluded that he is the Messiah?(AC) 27 But we know where this man is from;(AD) when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.”
28 Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts,(AE) cried out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from.(AF) I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true.(AG) You do not know him, 29 but I know him(AH) because I am from him and he sent me.”(AI)
30 At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him,(AJ) because his hour had not yet come.(AK) 31 Still, many in the crowd believed in him.(AL) They said, “When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs(AM) than this man?”
32 The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.
33 Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time,(AN) and then I am going to the one who sent me.(AO) 34 You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.”(AP)
35 The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered(AQ) among the Greeks,(AR) and teach the Greeks? 36 What did he mean when he said, ‘You will look for me, but you will not find me,’ and ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”(AS)
37 On the last and greatest day of the festival,(AT) Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.(AU) 38 Whoever believes(AV) in me, as Scripture has said,(AW) rivers of living water(AX) will flow from within them.”[c](AY) 39 By this he meant the Spirit,(AZ) whom those who believed in him were later to receive.(BA) Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.(BB)
40 On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.”(BC)
41 Others said, “He is the Messiah.”
Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee?(BD) 42 Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants(BE) and from Bethlehem,(BF) the town where David lived?” 43 Thus the people were divided(BG) because of Jesus. 44 Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.(BH)
Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders
45 Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”
46 “No one ever spoke the way this man does,”(BI) the guards replied.
47 “You mean he has deceived you also?”(BJ) the Pharisees retorted. 48 “Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him?(BK) 49 No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them.”
50 Nicodemus,(BL) who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, 51 “Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?”
52 They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.”(BM)

8 さて、イエスはオリーブ山に戻りましたが、 2 翌朝早く、また宮にお出かけになりました。たちまち人々が集まって来て、黒山の人だかりです。イエスは腰をおろし、話し始められました。 3 その最中に、ユダヤ人の指導者やパリサイ人が、寄ってたかって一人の女を引っぱって来ました。彼らは、あっけにとられて見ている人々の前に女を突き出しました。 4 「先生。この女を見てください。不倫の現場でつかまったのです。 5 モーセの律法では、こういう不届き者は石で打ち殺すことになっていますが、どうしたものでしょう。」 6 こう言ったのは、何かイエスのことばじりをとらえて、訴えてやろうという魂胆があったからです。ところがイエスは、体をかがめ、指で地面に何か書いておられるだけでした。 7 けれども、彼らは引き下がりません。あくまで質問を続けてやめなかったので、イエスはゆっくり体を起こし、「わかりました。この女を石で打ち殺しなさい。ただし、最初に石を投げるのは、今まで一度も罪を犯したことのない者ですよ」と言われました。 8 そして、すぐにまた体をかがめ、地面に何か書いておられました。 9 すると、ユダヤ人の指導者もパリサイ人も、ばつが悪そうに、年長者から順に一人去り二人去りして、とうとうイエスと女だけが、群衆の前に取り残されました。 10 イエスは体を起こし、女に言われました。「あなたを訴えた人たちはどこにいますか。罰する者は一人もいなかったのですか。」 11 「はい、先生。」「そうですか。わたしもあなたを罰しません。さあ、行きなさい。もう二度と罪を犯してはいけませんよ。」
世の光であるイエス
12 そのあとで、イエスは人々にお話しになりました。「わたしは世の光です。わたしに従って来れば、暗闇でつまずくことはありません。いのちの光が、あなたがたの進む道を明るく照らすからです。」 13 すると、パリサイ人たちが言いました。「うそばかり並べ立てて、自慢話もほどほどにしたらどうだ。」 14 「わたしはありのままを言っているのです。うそでも、でたらめでもありません。自分がどこから来てどこへ行くか、よくわかっています。ところが、あなたがたは全然わかっていません。 15 人間の基準でわたしをさばいているからです。わたしはだれのこともさばきません。 16 しかし、もしわたしがあなたがたをさばいたとしても、そのさばきは、どこから見ても正しいのです。わたしをお遣わしになった父がいっしょにさばいてくださるからです。 17 あなたがたの律法では、ある出来事について二人の証言が一致すれば、事実と認められることになっています。 18 だとしたら、わたしとわたしをお遣わしになった父とで、りっぱに二人の証人がそろいます。」 19 パリサイ人たちは言いました。「では、そのお父上とやらはどこにいるのか。」「わたしのことを知らないから、父のこともわからないのです。わたしを知っていたら、父をも知っていたでしょうに。」
真理は人を自由にする
20 こうした話がなされたのは、宮の中の献金箱が置いてある所ででした。しかし、だれ一人イエスを逮捕する者はいません。まだその時ではなかったのです。
21 イエスはまた、こんな話もなさいました。「わたしはもうすぐいなくなります。あなたがたは必死でわたしを捜すでしょうが、結局は、罪が赦されないまま死ぬのです。わたしが行く所へは来られません。」 22 ユダヤ人たちには、さっぱりわけがわかりません。「この人は自殺でもするつもりなのか。彼が行く所へ私たちは行けないとは、いったいどういうことだろう」と、首をかしげるばかりでした。 23 そこでイエスは言われました。「いいですか。あなたがたは地上に生まれた者ですが、わたしは天から来た者です。あなたがたはこの世の者ですが、わたしは違います。 24 だから、『あなたがたは罪が赦されないまま死ぬ』と言ったのです。わたしが神の子、メシヤであることを信じなければ、罪ののろいの下で死ぬしかないからです。」 25 「あなたはいったい、どういう方なのですか。」「そのことは、いつもはっきり言っていたはずです。 26 あなたがたには非難したいことや、教えたいことが山ほどあります。しかし、わたしをお遣わしになった方から聞いたことだけを話しましょう。その方は真実な方だからです。」 27 それでも彼らにはまだ、イエスが神のことを話しておられるのがわかりませんでした。 28 「あなたがたは、わたしを殺してはじめて、わたしがメシヤだったと気づくでしょう。そして、わたしが自分の考えではなく、父から教わったことを話していたとわかるでしょう。 29 わたしをお遣わしになった方が、わたしといつもいっしょにおられます。わたしをお見捨てになることはありません。わたしがいつも、その方のお心にかなうことをするからです。」
30-31 この話を聞いたユダヤ人の多くが、イエスをメシヤと信じるようになりました。その人たちにイエスは、「わたしが教えたとおりに生活すれば、ほんとうの弟子と言えます。 32 あなたがたは真理を知り、その真理があなたがたを自由にするのです」と言いました。 33 「おことばですが、私たちはれっきとしたアブラハムの子孫です。これまで、だれの奴隷になったこともありません。『自由にする』とはどういうことでしょう。」 34 「教えてあげましょう。あなたがたは一人残らず罪の奴隷なのです。 35 奴隷には何の権利もありません。しかし、主人の息子は別です。息子はありとあらゆる権利を持っています。 36 だから、神の子が自由にしてあげたなら、それでほんとうに自由の身になるのです。 37 確かに、あなたがたはアブラハムの子孫です。けれども、あなたがたの中には、わたしを殺そうとねらっている者がいます。わたしのことばが心にしっかり根を下ろしていないからです。 38 せっかくわたしが父といっしょにいた時に見たことを話してあげているのに、あなたがたは自分の父の言いつけに従っているだけです。」 39 「私たちの父はアブラハムです。」彼らは言いました。
「いや、あなたがたの父がアブラハムだったら、彼の良い模範にならったはずです。 40 ところが、どうです。反対にわたしを殺そうとしているではありませんか。しかもその理由は、わたしが神から聞いた真理を語ったからというのです。アブラハムなら、そんなことは絶対にしなかったでしょう。 41 そんなことをするのは、あなたがたが、あなたがた自身の父に従っているからです。」「私たちの真の父は、神ご自身です。私たちは私生児ではありません。」 42 「ほんとうにそのとおりなら、わたしを愛したはずです。わたしは神のもとから来たのですから。自分の考えで、今ここにいるのではありません。父がここにお遣わしになったのです。 43 わたしの言うことがわからないのも、むりはありません。理解できないようにされているのですから……。 44 あなたがたの父は悪魔です。悪魔の子が悪魔の悪い行いを喜んでまねても、不思議ではありません。悪魔は初めから人殺しで、真理をきらっています。悪魔のうちには真理の一かけらもありません。悪魔がうそをつくのは当然です。うそつきの大もとなのですから。 45 だから、わたしが真理を語ってもあなたがたが信じないのはあたりまえです。 46 あなたがたのうち、だれが、たった一つでもわたしの罪を指摘できますか。できないでしょう。真理を話しているのに、なぜわたしを信じないのですか。 47 神の子どもならだれでも、神のおっしゃることを喜んで聞くはずです。あなたがたが聞き従わないのは、神の子どもではないからです。」
48 「おまえはサマリヤ人だ！ よそ者だ！ やっぱり悪霊に取りつかれているのだ。」ユダヤ人たちはわめき立てました。 49 イエスは、「いや、断じてそんなことはありません。わたしは父を尊敬しています。が、そんなわたしを、あなたがたは軽蔑しているのです。 50 しかし、わたしは栄誉を求めているのではありません。ただ、わたしに栄誉を与えたいと願っておられる神が、わたしを受け入れない人々をおさばきになるのです。 51 よく言っておきましょう。わたしに従う者は、決して死なないのです」と言われました。 52 「おまえが悪霊に取りつかれていることが、はっきりした。アブラハムも、偉大な預言者たちも死んだのに、『わたしに従う者は死なない』などと、よく言ったものだ。 53 おまえは、先祖のアブラハムよりも偉いのか？ アブラハムは死んだろう。それとも、あの預言者たちよりも偉いとでも言うのか。その預言者たちも死んだではないか。いったい自分をだれだと思っているのだ。」 54 イエスは言われました。「わたしがただ自慢しているだけなら、全くむなしいものです。しかし、わたしに栄光を与えてくださるのは父なのです。この方を、あなたがたは『私たちの神様』と呼んでいます。 55 そう呼びながら、実はこの方を知りもしません。わたしはよく知っています。知らないなどと言ったら、それこそ、あなたがたと同じように大うそつきになります。わたしがこの方を知り、この方に全く従っているというのはほんとうです。 56 あなたがたの先祖アブラハムは、わたしの日を思い見て喜びにあふれました。わたしが来るとわかったからです。」 57 「まだ五十歳にもなっていないあんたが、よくアブラハム様を見ることができましたね。」 58 「アブラハムが生まれるずっと前から、わたしはいるのです。これは、まぎれもない事実です。」
59 話がここまで来ると、ユダヤ人たちは怒りを抑えることができず、手に手に石をつかみ、今にもイエスを打ち殺さんばかりになりました。しかし、イエスはすばやく身を避け、急いで宮を抜け出しました。

8 1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.(A)
2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them.(B) 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women.(C) Now what do you say?” 6 They were using this question as a trap,(D) in order to have a basis for accusing him.(E)
But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone(F) at her.”(G) 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
11 “No one, sir,” she said.
“Then neither do I condemn you,”(H) Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”(I)
Dispute Over Jesus’ Testimony
12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am(J) the light of the world.(K) Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”(L)
13 The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.”(M)
14 Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going.(N) But you have no idea where I come from(O) or where I am going. 15 You judge by human standards;(P) I pass judgment on no one.(Q) 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.(R) 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.(S) 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”(T)
19 Then they asked him, “Where is your father?”
“You do not know me or my Father,”(U) Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”(V) 20 He spoke these words while teaching(W) in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put.(X) Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.(Y)
Dispute Over Who Jesus Is
21 Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die(Z) in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”(AA)
22 This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”
23 But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.(AB) 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he,(AC) you will indeed die in your sins.”
25 “Who are you?” they asked.
“Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied. 26 “I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy,(AD) and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”(AE)
27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up[a] the Son of Man,(AF) then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.(AG) 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone,(AH) for I always do what pleases him.”(AI) 30 Even as he spoke, many believed in him.(AJ)
Dispute Over Whose Children Jesus’ Opponents Are
31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching,(AK) you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”(AL)
33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants(AM) and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.(AN) 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.(AO) 36 So if the Son sets you free,(AP) you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me,(AQ) because you have no room for my word. 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence,(AR) and you are doing what you have heard from your father.[b]”(AS)
39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered.
“If you were Abraham’s children,”(AT) said Jesus, “then you would[c] do what Abraham did. 40 As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me,(AU) a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God.(AV) Abraham did not do such things. 41 You are doing the works of your own father.”(AW)
“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”(AX)
42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me,(AY) for I have come here from God.(AZ) I have not come on my own;(BA) God sent me.(BB) 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil,(BC) and you want to carry out your father’s desires.(BD) He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.(BE) 45 Yet because I tell the truth,(BF) you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says.(BG) The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
Jesus’ Claims About Himself
48 The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan(BH) and demon-possessed?”(BI)
49 “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself;(BJ) but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”(BK)
52 At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed!(BL) Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham?(BM) He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”
54 Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself,(BN) my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me.(BO) 55 Though you do not know him,(BP) I know him.(BQ) If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.(BR) 56 Your father Abraham(BS) rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it(BT) and was glad.”
57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”
58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born,(BU) I am!”(BV) 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him,(BW) but Jesus hid himself,(BX) slipping away from the temple grounds.
