Spiritual Blindness

³⁵ Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe^(A) in the Son of Man?”^(B)

³⁶ “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”^(C)

³⁷ Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”^(D)

³⁸ Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.^(E)

³⁹ Jesus said,^[a] “For judgment^(F) I have come into this world,^(G) so that the blind will see^(H) and those who see will become blind.”^(I)

⁴⁰ Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?”^(J)

⁴¹ Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.^(K)

The Good Shepherd and His Sheep

10 “Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber.^{(L) 2} The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.^{(M) 3} The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice.^(N) He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.^{(O) 4} When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.^{(P) 5} But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” ⁶ Jesus used this figure of speech,^(Q) but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.^(R)

⁷ Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am^(S) the gate^(T) for the sheep. ⁸ All who have come before me^(U) are thieves and robbers,^(V) but the sheep have not listened to them. ⁹ I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.^[b] They will come in and go out, and find pasture. ¹⁰ The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life,^(W) and have it to the full.^(X)

¹¹ “I am^(Y) the good shepherd.^(Z) The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.^(AA)

²⁶ but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.^{(A) 27} My sheep listen to my voice; I know them,^(B) and they follow me.^{(C) 28} I give them eternal life,^(D) and they shall never perish;^(E) no one will snatch them out of my hand.^(F)

¹² Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it.^{(A) 13} For if you live according to the flesh, you will die;^(B) but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body,^(C) you will live.^(D)

¹⁴ For those who are led by the Spirit of God^(E) are the children of God.^{(F) 15} The Spirit^(G) you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again;^(H) rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.^[a] And by him we cry, “Abba,^[b] Father.”^{(I) 16} The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit^(J) that we are God’s children.^(K)

²³ Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit,^(A) groan^(B) inwardly as we wait eagerly^(C) for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.^{(D) 24} For in this hope we were saved.^(E) But hope that is seen is no hope at all.^(F) Who hopes for what they already have? ²⁵ But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.^(G)

²⁶ In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit^(H) himself intercedes for us^(I) through wordless groans. ²⁷ And he who searches our hearts^(J) knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes^(K) for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

²⁷ Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.^(A) I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled^(B) and do not be afraid.

³² “A time is coming^(A) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,^(B) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.^(C) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.^(D)

³³ “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.^(E) In this world you will have trouble.^(F) But take heart! I have overcome^(G) the world.”
