John 17:20-18:14

Jesus Prays for All Believers

²⁰“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, ²¹that all of them may be one,^(A) Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.^(B) May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.^(C) ²²I have given them the glory that you gave me,^(D) that they may be one as we are one^(E)— ²³I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me^(F) and have loved them^(G) even as you have loved me.

²⁴“Father, I want those you have given me^(H) to be with me where I am,^(I) and to see my glory,^(J) the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.^(K)

²⁵“Righteous Father, though the world does not know you,^(L) I know you, and they know that you have sent me.^(M) ²⁶I have made you^[a] known to them,^(N) and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them^(O) and that I myself may be in them.”

Jesus Arrested^(P)

18 When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley.^(Q) On the other side there was a garden,^(R) and he and his disciples went into it.^(S)

²Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.^(T) ³So Judas came to the garden, guiding^(U) a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees.^(V) They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.

⁴Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him,^(W) went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”^(X)

⁵“Jesus of Nazareth,”^(Y) they replied.

“I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) ⁶When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

⁷Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?”^(Z)

“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.

⁸Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” ⁹This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”^[b]^(AA)

¹⁰Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)

¹¹Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup^(AB) the Father has given me?”

¹²Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials^(AC) arrested Jesus. They bound him ¹³and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas,^(AD) the high priest that year. ¹⁴Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.^(AE)
