Om te vertellen dat het grote feestjaar van de Heer begonnen is. Om te zeggen dat de dag is gekomen dat onze God zijn vijanden zal straffen. Om alle mensen die verdrietig zijn, te troosten. Om alle mensen in Jeruzalem die treuren, weer blij te maken. Ze zullen geen as meer op hun hoofd hebben als teken van verdriet, maar een feestkroon. Ze zullen niet meer gebukt gaan onder verdriet, maar ze zullen blij zijn en feestvieren. Ze zullen worden genoemd: 'Eiken van rechtvaardigheid,' en: 'Bomen door de Heer geplant'. Zo zal Hij worden geëerd.

Ze zullen de oude puinhopen weer opbouwen tot steden. Wat vroeger werd verwoest, zullen ze weer opbouwen. Ze zullen de steden die in puin liggen, vernieuwen. Zelfs steden die eeuwenlang verwoest hebben gelegen, worden weer opgebouwd.

to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor(A)
    and the day of vengeance(B) of our God,
to comfort(C) all who mourn,(D)
    and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown(E) of beauty
    instead of ashes,(F)
the oil(G) of joy
    instead of mourning,(H)
and a garment of praise
    instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
    a planting(I) of the Lord
    for the display of his splendor.(J)

They will rebuild the ancient ruins(K)
    and restore the places long devastated;
they will renew the ruined cities
    that have been devastated for generations.

To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.

And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.
