Synd, bekännelse och frälsning
59 Se, Herrens hand är inte för kort,
så att han ej kan frälsa,
hans öra är inte tillslutet,
så att han ej kan höra.
2 Nej, det är era missgärningar
som skiljer er och er Gud från varandra,
era synder döljer hans ansikte för er,
så att han inte hör er.
3 Ty era händer är fläckade av blod,
era fingrar av missgärning.
Era läppar talar lögn,
er tunga bär fram orättfärdighet.
4 Ingen åberopar rättfärdighet,
ingen dömer med sanning.
På tomhet förtröstar de och talar lögn,
de går havande med olycka och föder fördärv.
5 De kläcker ut ormägg
och väver spindelnät.
Den som äter av deras ägg dör,
och krossas ett sådant, kommer det ut en orm.
6 Deras spindelnät duger inte till kläder,
sig själva kan de inte skyla med vad de tillverkat.
Deras verk är ondskans verk,
deras händer utför våld.
7 Deras fötter hastar till det som är ont,
de är snara att utgjuta oskyldigt blod.
Deras tankar är fördärvets tankar,
förödelse och förstöring råder på deras vägar.
8 Fridens väg känner de inte,
rätten följer inte i deras spår.
De går krokiga stigar,
ingen som går på dem vet vad frid är.
9 Därför är rättvisan fjärran ifrån oss,
rättfärdigheten når oss inte.
Vi väntar på ljus, men se, mörker råder,
på solsken, men vi vandrar i djupaste dunkel.
10 Vi famlar som blinda längs väggen,
famlar som hade vi inte ögon.
Vi stapplar mitt på dagen som vore det skymning.
Bland välgödda är vi som döda.
11 Vi brummar alla som björnar
och kuttrar sorgset som duvor.
Vi väntar på rättvisa, men den kommer inte,
efter frälsning, men den är fjärran ifrån oss.
12 Våra överträdelser inför dig är många,
våra synder vittnar emot oss.
Ja, våra överträdelser har vi för våra ögon,
vi känner våra missgärningar.
13 Vi har gjort uppror och förnekat Herren,
vi har vikit bort från vår Gud.
Vi har talat förtryck och upproriskhet,
lögnaktiga ord som vi tänkt ut i våra hjärtan
har vi fört fram.
14 Rättvisan trängs tillbaka,
rättfärdigheten står långt borta,
ja, sanningen vacklar på torget,
det som är rätt kan inte komma fram.
15 Sanningen har försvunnit,
och den som vänder sig ifrån det onda blir plundrad.
Detta såg Herren,
och det misshagade honom att ingen rättvisa fanns.
16 Han såg att ingen trädde fram,
han förundrade sig över att ingen grep in.
Då hjälpte honom hans egen arm,
och hans rättfärdighet understödde honom.
17 Han klädde sig i rättfärdighet som i ett pansar
och satte frälsningens hjälm på sitt huvud.
Han klädde sig i hämndens dräkt som i en livklädnad
och svepte in sig i nitälskan som i en mantel.
18 Efter deras gärningar skall han vedergälla dem.
Vrede över hans motståndare,
vedergällning över hans fiender.
Kustländerna skall han vedergälla för vad de har gjort.
19 Så skall man frukta Herrens namn i väster
och hans härlighet där solen går upp.
När fienden bryter fram lik en flod,
skall Herrens Ande driva honom på flykten.
20 Återlösaren skall komma till Sion
och till dem i Jakob som vänder om från sin överträdelse,
säger Herren.
21 Detta är det förbund som jag å min sida gör med dem, säger Herren: Min Ande som är över dig, och mina ord som jag har lagt i din mun skall inte vika ur din mun eller ur dina barns eller barnbarns mun från nu och till evig tid, säger Herren.

Folkets synder, bekännelse och frälsning
59 Herrens arm är inte för kort för att rädda,
hans öra är inte heller dövt så att han inte hör.
2 Det är era synder som skiljer er från er Gud.
För era synders skull har han vänt sitt ansikte bort ifrån er
och lyssnar inte längre.
3 Era händer är fläckade av blod
och era fingrar av synd.
Ni ljuger med era läppar,
och på era tungor finns ondska.
4 Ingen frågar efter rättfärdighet
och ingen dömer sanningsenligt.
De förtröstar på tomhet och talar lögn.
De går havande med ofärd och föder olycka.
5 De kläcker ormägg
och väver spindelväv.
Den som äter deras ägg dör,
om de krossas kommer det ut en orm.[a]
6 Deras väv duger inte till kläder,
det de åstadkommer räcker inte för att skyla dem själva.
Det de gör är orätt,
våld är vad de utför.
7 Deras fötter skyndar till allt som är ont
och är snara till att utgjuta oskyldigt blod.
De tänker ut onda planer,
och deras väg kantas av våld och förödelse.
8 Fridens väg känner de inte till,
och där de går fram finns ingen rätt.
De har slagit in på krokiga vägar,
ingen som går där kan få någon frid.
9 Därför är rätten långt ifrån oss,
och rättfärdigheten når oss inte.
Vi hoppas på ljus, men det är mörkt,
solsken, men vi vandrar i dunkel.
10 Vi famlar som blinda längs vägen,
vi famlar som om vi saknade ögon,
snavar mitt på dagen, som om det vore skymning.
Bland de livskraftiga är vi som döda.
11 Vi brummar alla som björnar
och kuttrar som sorgsna duvor.
Vi väntar på rättvisa,
men det finns ingen,
på räddning,
men den är långt ifrån oss.
12 Våra överträdelser hopar sig inför dig,
våra synder vittnar mot oss.
Vi bär våra synder med oss,
vi vet om våra missgärningar.
13 Vi har varit upproriska och förnekat Herren,
vi har vänt oss bort från vår Gud.
Vi har talat våld och falskhet
och viskat lögner som vi själva tänkt ut.
14 Rättvisan blir undanträngd,
rättfärdigheten stannar på avstånd,
sanningen vacklar på torget,
och ingen ärlighet får komma fram.
15 Sanningen finns inte,
och den som skyr det onda blir plundrad.
Herren såg detta
och blev bedrövad över att ingen rätt fanns.
16 Han såg att ingen trädde fram,
och han förundrades över att ingen grep in.
Då blev hans egen arm till räddning,
hans rättfärdighet var hans stöd.
17 Han klädde sig i rättfärdighet som ett pansar
och satte räddningen som hjälm på sitt huvud.
Han tog på sig hämndens dräkt
och svepte in sig i harmens mantel.
18 Med vrede ska han betala sina fiender
för vad de gjort,
han bestraffar sina motståndare
och vedergäller fjärran länder.
19 Då ska man frukta Herrens namn
och hans härlighet
från öster till väster,
när han väller fram som en flodvåg
som Herrens Ande[b] driver fram.
20 ”Som befriare ska han komma till Sion,
till dem i Jakob som vänder om från sin synd, säger Herren.
21 Och detta är det förbund jag ingår med dem, säger Herren: Min Ande som fyller dig och mina ord som jag har lagt i din mun ska bli kvar hos dig och dina barn och barnbarn och ska aldrig någonsin lämna er,” säger Herren.

Sin, Confession and Redemption
59 Surely the arm(A) of the Lord is not too short(B) to save,
nor his ear too dull to hear.(C)
2 But your iniquities have separated(D)
you from your God;
your sins have hidden his face from you,
so that he will not hear.(E)
3 For your hands are stained with blood,(F)
your fingers with guilt.(G)
Your lips have spoken falsely,(H)
and your tongue mutters wicked things.
4 No one calls for justice;(I)
no one pleads a case with integrity.
They rely(J) on empty arguments, they utter lies;(K)
they conceive trouble and give birth to evil.(L)
5 They hatch the eggs of vipers(M)
and spin a spider’s web.(N)
Whoever eats their eggs will die,
and when one is broken, an adder is hatched.
6 Their cobwebs are useless for clothing;
they cannot cover themselves with what they make.(O)
Their deeds are evil deeds,
and acts of violence(P) are in their hands.
7 Their feet rush into sin;
they are swift to shed innocent blood.(Q)
They pursue evil schemes;(R)
acts of violence mark their ways.(S)
8 The way of peace they do not know;(T)
there is no justice in their paths.
They have turned them into crooked roads;(U)
no one who walks along them will know peace.(V)
9 So justice is far from us,
and righteousness does not reach us.
We look for light, but all is darkness;(W)
for brightness, but we walk in deep shadows.
10 Like the blind(X) we grope along the wall,
feeling our way like people without eyes.
At midday we stumble(Y) as if it were twilight;
among the strong, we are like the dead.(Z)
11 We all growl like bears;
we moan mournfully like doves.(AA)
We look for justice, but find none;
for deliverance, but it is far away.
12 For our offenses(AB) are many in your sight,
and our sins testify(AC) against us.
Our offenses are ever with us,
and we acknowledge our iniquities:(AD)
13 rebellion(AE) and treachery against the Lord,
turning our backs(AF) on our God,
inciting revolt and oppression,(AG)
uttering lies(AH) our hearts have conceived.
14 So justice(AI) is driven back,
and righteousness(AJ) stands at a distance;
truth(AK) has stumbled in the streets,
honesty cannot enter.
15 Truth(AL) is nowhere to be found,
and whoever shuns evil becomes a prey.
The Lord looked and was displeased
that there was no justice.(AM)
16 He saw that there was no one,(AN)
he was appalled that there was no one to intervene;(AO)
so his own arm achieved salvation(AP) for him,
and his own righteousness(AQ) sustained him.
17 He put on righteousness as his breastplate,(AR)
and the helmet(AS) of salvation on his head;
he put on the garments(AT) of vengeance(AU)
and wrapped himself in zeal(AV) as in a cloak.
18 According to what they have done,
so will he repay(AW)
wrath to his enemies
and retribution to his foes;
he will repay the islands(AX) their due.
19 From the west,(AY) people will fear the name of the Lord,
and from the rising of the sun,(AZ) they will revere his glory.(BA)
For he will come like a pent-up flood
that the breath(BB) of the Lord drives along.[a]
20 “The Redeemer(BC) will come to Zion,(BD)
to those in Jacob who repent of their sins,”(BE)
declares the Lord.
21 “As for me, this is my covenant(BF) with them,” says the Lord. “My Spirit,(BG) who is on you, will not depart from you,(BH) and my words that I have put in your mouth(BI) will always be on your lips, on the lips of your children and on the lips of their descendants—from this time on and forever,” says the Lord.

59 Listen now! The Lord isn’t too weak to save you. And he isn’t getting deaf! He can hear you when you call! 2 But the trouble is that your sins have cut you off from God. Because of sin he has turned his face away from you and will not listen anymore. 3 For your hands are those of murderers and your fingers are filthy with sin. You lie and grumble and oppose the good. 4 No one cares about being fair and true. Your lawsuits are based on lies; you spend your time plotting evil deeds and doing them. 5 You spend your time and energy in spinning evil plans that end up in deadly actions. 6 You cheat and shortchange everyone. Everything you do is filled with sin; violence is your trademark. 7 Your feet run to do evil and rush to murder; your thoughts are only of sinning, and wherever you go you leave behind a trail of misery and death. 8 You don’t know what true peace is, nor what it means to be just and good; you continually do wrong and those who follow you won’t experience any peace either.
9 It is because of all this evil that you aren’t finding God’s blessings; that’s why he doesn’t punish those who injure you. No wonder you are in darkness when you expected light. No wonder you are walking in the gloom. 10 No wonder you grope like blind men and stumble along in broad daylight, yes, even at brightest noontime, as though it were the darkest night! No wonder you are like corpses when compared with vigorous young men! 11 You roar like hungry bears; you moan with mournful cries like doves. You look for God to keep you, but he doesn’t. He has turned away. 12 For your sins keep piling up before the righteous God and testify against you.
Yes, we know what sinners we are. 13 We know our disobedience; we have denied the Lord our God. We know what rebels we are and how unfair we are, for we carefully plan our lies. 14 Our courts oppose the righteous man; fairness is unknown. Truth falls dead in the streets, and justice is outlawed.
15 Yes, truth is gone, and anyone who tries a better life is soon attacked. The Lord saw all the evil and was displeased to find no steps taken against sin. 16 He saw no one was helping you and wondered that no one intervened. Therefore he himself stepped in to save you through his mighty power and justice. 17 He put on righteousness as armor and the helmet of salvation on his head. He clothed himself with robes of vengeance and of godly fury. 18 He will repay his enemies for their evil deeds—fury for his foes in distant lands. 19 Then at last they will reverence and glorify the name of God from west to east. For he will come like a flood tide driven by Jehovah’s breath. 20 He will come as a Redeemer to those in Zion who have turned away from sin.
21 “As for me, this is my promise to them,” says the Lord: “My Holy Spirit shall not leave them, and they shall want the good and hate the wrong—they and their children and their children’s children forever.”

59 Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:
2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
3 For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness.
4 None calleth for justice, nor any pleadeth for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.
5 They hatch cockatrice' eggs, and weave the spider's web: he that eateth of their eggs dieth, and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper.
6 Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.
7 Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths.
8 The way of peace they know not; and there is no judgment in their goings: they have made them crooked paths: whosoever goeth therein shall not know peace.
9 Therefore is judgment far from us, neither doth justice overtake us: we wait for light, but behold obscurity; for brightness, but we walk in darkness.
10 We grope for the wall like the blind, and we grope as if we had no eyes: we stumble at noon day as in the night; we are in desolate places as dead men.
11 We roar all like bears, and mourn sore like doves: we look for judgment, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far off from us.
12 For our transgressions are multiplied before thee, and our sins testify against us: for our transgressions are with us; and as for our iniquities, we know them;
13 In transgressing and lying against the Lord, and departing away from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood.
14 And judgment is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter.
15 Yea, truth faileth; and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey: and the Lord saw it, and it displeased him that there was no judgment.
16 And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him.
17 For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloak.
18 According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, fury to his adversaries, recompence to his enemies; to the islands he will repay recompence.
19 So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him.
20 And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the Lord.
21 As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the Lord; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed's seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth and for ever.
