De boodschappers uit Babel
39 Koning Merodach-Baladan van Babel hoorde dat koning Hizkia erg ziek geweest was maar nu weer was genezen. Daarom stuurde hij boodschappers met een brief en een geschenk naar Hizkia. 2 Hizkia was blij met hun bezoek en hij liet hun zijn schatkamers zien: al het zilver en goud, de specerijen en vaten olijf-olie, zijn hele wapenvoorraad en alles wat bij zijn paarden en strijdwagens hoorde, zijn hele schat. Alles in zijn paleis en in zijn land liet hij hun zien.
3 Toen kwam de profeet Jesaja naar koning Hizkia. Hij vroeg aan de koning: "Wat hebben deze mannen gezegd en waar komen ze vandaan?" Hizkia antwoordde: "Ze kwamen uit een ver land: uit Babel." 4 En Jesaja vroeg: "Wat hebben ze in uw paleis gezien?" Hizkia antwoordde: "Alles hebben ze gezien. Ik heb hun al mijn schatten laten zien." 5 Toen zei Jesaja tegen hem: "Luister naar wat de Heer van de hemelse legers zegt: 6 Er zal een tijd komen dat alles wat in uw paleis is, naar Babel zal worden gebracht. Alles wat u en uw voorvaders tot nu toe verzameld hebben, zal meegenomen worden naar Babel. Er zal niets van hier blijven, zegt de Heer. 7 En de zonen die u nog zal krijgen, zullen hofdienaren zijn in het paleis van de koning van Babel."[a] 8 Hizkia zei tegen Jesaja: "Het is goed wat de Heer heeft gezegd." Want hij dacht: "Dan is er zolang ík leef tenminste vrede."

- Jesaja 39:7 Dit gebeurde inderdaad, toen Jeruzalem ongeveer 80 jaar later veroverd werd door koning Nebukadnezar van Babel. De profeet Daniël was één van de prinsen die toen hofdienaar werden in het paleis van de koning van Babel. Lees Daniël 1.

Envoys from Babylon
39 (A)At that time Merodach-baladan the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, (B)sent envoys with letters and a present to Hezekiah, for he heard that he had been sick and had recovered. 2 And Hezekiah welcomed them gladly. And he showed them his treasure house, (C)the silver, the gold, the spices, the precious oil, his whole armory, all that was found in his storehouses. (D)There was nothing in his house or in all his realm that Hezekiah did not show them. 3 Then Isaiah the prophet came to King Hezekiah, and said to him, “What did these men say? And from where did they come to you?” Hezekiah said, “They have come to me from a far country, from Babylon.” 4 He said, “What have they seen in your house?” Hezekiah answered, “They have seen all that is in my house. There is nothing in my storehouses that I did not show them.”
5 Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the word of the Lord of hosts: 6 (E)Behold, the days are coming, when all that is in your house, and that which your fathers have stored up till this day, shall be carried to Babylon. Nothing shall be left, says the Lord. 7 (F)And some of your own sons, who will come from you, whom you will father, shall be taken away, and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.” 8 Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of the Lord that you have spoken is good.” For he thought, (G)“There will be peace and security in my days.”
