Gods woorden over Tyrus en Sidon

23 Jesaja zegt: Dit is wat ik van de Heer moet zeggen over Tyrus.

Huil, zeelui die naar Tarsis[a] varen! Want jullie thuishaven Tyrus is verwoest. Er is geen huis meer over. Er woont niemand meer. Bij Chittim (= Cyprus) hoorden jullie het nieuws. 2 Wees stil van schrik, bewoners van het eiland! Want jullie zijn rijk geworden dankzij de handelaren uit Sidon die over de zeeën varen. 3 Over de Grote Zee kwam er graan uit Sichor. Jullie leefden van de oogst die uit Egypte kwam. Tyrus deed zaken met alle volken. 4 Sidon, schaam je. Want er woont niemand meer in je. Zonder jouw bewoners voelt de zee zich kinderloos[b] en zegt: "Het is net alsof ik nooit kinderen gehad heb." Het is alsof je nooit hebt bestaan. 5 Als de mensen horen wat er met Tyrus is gebeurd, zullen ze geschokt zijn. Net zo geschokt als toen ze het nieuws hoorden over de verwoesting van Egypte.[c]

6 Vlucht naar Tarsis en huil, bewoners van het eiland! 7 Wat is er over van jullie levendige stad? Die stad die al zó lang bestond? De stad waarvan de bewoners naar verre landen gingen om daar handel te drijven? 8 De handelaren van Tyrus hoorden bij de belangrijkste mensen op aarde! Wie heeft ervoor gezorgd dat het zó met het machtige Tyrus is afgelopen? 9 De Heer van de hemelse legers heeft dit gedaan. Hij besloot om een einde te maken aan al die trotse rijkdom. Hij besloot om al die machtige mensen te vernederen.

10 Bewoners van Tarsis, zwerm maar uit over het land, zoals de Nijl in Egypte het land overspoelt. Er is niets meer wat jullie nog tegenhoudt. 11 De Heer heeft zijn hand uitgestrekt over de zee. Koninkrijken maakte Hij aan het beven. De Heer heeft het bevel gegeven om de burchten in Kanaän[d] te verwoesten. 12 Hij zei: "Sidon, arme stad! Je zal niet meer vrolijk en blij zijn. Vaar maar naar Chittim, maar je zal er geen rust vinden. 13 Kijk naar het land van de Babyloniërs. Dat land, en niet Assur, heeft Tyrus helemaal verwoest. Nu leven er alleen nog maar woestijndieren. Babel bestormde de muren, verwoestte de burchten. Nu zijn er alleen nog puinhopen. 14 Huil, zeelui die naar Tarsis varen, want jullie burcht Tyrus is verwoest."[e]

15 Tyrus zal 70 jaar lang worden vergeten, net zo lang als één koning regeert. Aan het eind van die 70 jaar zal het met Tyrus net zo gaan als met de hoer in het liedje. 16 Over die hoer wordt gezongen: "Maak muziek, ga rond door de stad, vergeten hoer! Speel maar mooi, zing maar veel, misschien willen de mannen je weer hebben." 17 Net zo zal de Heer er aan het eind van die 70 jaar voor zorgen dat alle koninkrijken op aarde weer handel willen drijven met Tyrus. Tyrus zal weer met allerlei steden en landen een verbond sluiten. 18 Maar alle winst die Tyrus daarmee zal maken, zal voor de Heer zijn. Het zal niet worden opgeslagen. Het zal zijn voor de mensen die dicht bij de Heer leven. Ze zullen er eten en kleren van kopen.

  1. Jesaja 23:1 Tarsis was waarschijnlijk de stad Tartessus in Spanje. Tyrus dreef handel met allerlei landen overzee.
  2. Jesaja 23:4 De stad Tyrus was gebouwd op een rots in de zee. Ook was het een volk van zeevaarders. Een zee zonder zeevaarders is als een moeder zonder kinderen.
  3. Jesaja 23:5 De verwoesting van Egypte wordt beschreven in Jesaja 19.
  4. Jesaja 23:11 Zoals Hij vroeger het bevel had gegeven de burchten van Kanaän te vernietigen, zo gaf Hij nu het bevel Tyrus en Sidon te verwoesten.
  5. Jesaja 23:14 Tyrus werd later verwoest door koning Nebukadnezar. Het bleef 70 jaar lang verwoest liggen. Daarna werd er een nieuwe stad gebouwd. Die werd 240 jaar later (in 332 vóór het jaar nul) veroverd en verwoest door Alexander de Grote van Griekenland.

23 Dit is Gods profetie over Tyrus.

Huil, schepen van Tyrus, die vanuit verre landen op de thuisreis zijn! Huil om uw haven, want hij is verdwenen! De geruchten die u op Cyprus hoorde, zijn waar. 2,3 Overal heerst een doodse stilte. De geluiden van de rumoerige haven, vol schepen uit Sidon die koopwaar van over de zee uit Egypte en het gebied langs de Nijl aanvoeren, zijn verstomd. U was de grootste handelsmarkt ter wereld.

4 Schaam u, Sidon, bolwerk van de zee. Want nu bent u kinderloos! 5 Als dit nieuws Egypte bereikt, zal het veel angst veroorzaken. 6 Vlucht naar Tarsis, mannen van Tyrus, en huil onderweg. 7 Deze verlaten ruïne is alles wat overbleef van uw eens zo luisterrijke stad. Het einde van een roemruchte geschiedenis. Denk eens aan alle kolonisten die u naar verre landen stuurde!

8 Wie heeft deze ramp over Tyrus gebracht? Over dit land dat koninkrijken schiep en wiens inwoners de belangrijkste kooplieden ter wereld waren? 9 De Here van de hemelse legers heeft dit gedaan, om uw trots te vernietigen en zijn verachting te tonen over de hooggeplaatsten onder de mensen. 10 Zeil maar verder, schepen van Tarsis, want uw haven is er niet meer. 11 De Here strekt zijn hand uit over de zee, Hij doet de koninkrijken van deze aarde beven, Hij geeft bevel de vestingen in Kanaän te verwoesten. 12 Hij zegt: ‘U, onteerde maagd, dochter van Sidon, zult nooit meer blij of sterk zijn. Zelfs als u naar Cyprus vlucht, zult u geen rust vinden.’ 13 Want het zullen de Babyloniërs en niet de Assyriërs zijn die Tyrus aanvallen. Zij zullen het belegeren, de paleizen met de grond gelijk maken en het herscheppen in een ruïne. 14 Huil maar, schepen van Tarsis, want uw thuishaven is verdwenen!

15,16 Zeventig jaar lang zal Tyrus worden vergeten. Dan, onder een andere koning, zal de stad weer tot leven komen, zij zal mooie liederen spelen als een prostituee die lange tijd vergeten was. Nu loopt zij weer door de straten op zoek naar minnaars en wordt weer herkend. 17 Ja, na zeventig jaar zal de Here Tyrus weer laten opleven, maar zij zal niet anders zijn dan vroeger, zij zal weer terugkeren op haar slechte wegen en hoererij bedrijven met de koninkrijken van de wereld. 18 Maar de winst van haar handelstransacties zal aan de Here gewijd worden. Zij zal geen voorraad kunnen opslaan, maar het zal tot voedsel en kleding dienen voor hen die bij de Here wonen.

Howl, ye ships of Tarshish; for it is laid waste, so that there is no house, no entering in: from the land of Kittim it is revealed to them. 2 Be still, ye inhabitants of the coast, thou whom the merchants of Sidon, that pass over the sea, have replenished. 3 And on great waters the seed of the Shihor, the harvest of the Nile, was her revenue; and she was the mart of nations. 4 Be thou ashamed, O Sidon; for the sea hath spoken, the stronghold of the sea, saying, I have not travailed, nor brought forth, neither have I nourished young men, nor brought up virgins. 5 [b]When the report cometh to Egypt, they shall be sorely pained at the report of Tyre. 6 Pass ye over to Tarshish; wail, ye inhabitants of the coast. 7 Is this your joyous city, whose antiquity is [c]of ancient days, whose feet carried her afar off to sojourn?

8 Who hath purposed this against Tyre, the bestower of crowns, whose merchants are princes, whose traffickers are the honorable of the earth? 9 Jehovah of hosts hath purposed it, to [d]stain the pride of all glory, to bring into contempt all the honorable of the earth. 10 [e]Pass through thy land as the Nile, O daughter of Tarshish; there is no [f]restraint any more. 11 He hath stretched out his hand over the sea, he hath shaken the kingdoms: Jehovah hath given commandment concerning [g]Canaan, to destroy the strongholds thereof. 12 And he said, Thou shalt no more rejoice, O thou oppressed virgin daughter of Sidon: arise, pass over to Kittim; even there shalt thou have no rest.

13 Behold, the land of the Chaldeans: [h]this people was not; the Assyrian founded it for them that dwell in the wilderness; they set up [i]their towers; they [j]overthrew the palaces thereof; they made it a ruin. 14 Howl, ye ships of Tarshish; for your stronghold is laid waste. 15 And it shall come to pass in that day, that Tyre shall be forgotten seventy years, according to the days of one king: after the end of seventy years [k]it shall be unto Tyre as in the song of the harlot. 16 Take a harp, go about the city, thou harlot that hast been forgotten; make sweet melody, sing many songs, that thou mayest be remembered. 17 And it shall come to pass after the end of seventy years, that Jehovah will visit Tyre, and she shall return to her hire, and shall play the harlot with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the earth. 18 And her merchandise and her hire shall be holiness to Jehovah: it shall not be treasured nor laid up; for her merchandise shall be for them that dwell before Jehovah, to eat sufficiently, and for [l]durable clothing.

A Prophecy Against Tyre

23 A prophecy against Tyre:(A)

Wail,(B) you ships(C) of Tarshish!(D)
    For Tyre is destroyed(E)
    and left without house or harbor.
From the land of Cyprus
    word has come to them.

2 Be silent,(F) you people of the island
    and you merchants(G) of Sidon,(H)
    whom the seafarers have enriched.
3 On the great waters
    came the grain of the Shihor;(I)
the harvest of the Nile[a](J) was the revenue of Tyre,(K)
    and she became the marketplace of the nations.

4 Be ashamed, Sidon,(L) and you fortress of the sea,
    for the sea has spoken:
“I have neither been in labor nor given birth;(M)
    I have neither reared sons nor brought up daughters.”
5 When word comes to Egypt,
    they will be in anguish(N) at the report from Tyre.(O)

6 Cross over to Tarshish;(P)
    wail, you people of the island.
7 Is this your city of revelry,(Q)
    the old, old city,
whose feet have taken her
    to settle in far-off lands?
8 Who planned this against Tyre,
    the bestower of crowns,
whose merchants(R) are princes,
    whose traders(S) are renowned in the earth?
9 The Lord Almighty planned(T) it,
    to bring down(U) her pride in all her splendor
    and to humble(V) all who are renowned(W) on the earth.

10 Till[b] your land as they do along the Nile,
    Daughter Tarshish,
    for you no longer have a harbor.
11 The Lord has stretched out his hand(X) over the sea
    and made its kingdoms tremble.(Y)
He has given an order concerning Phoenicia
    that her fortresses be destroyed.(Z)
12 He said, “No more of your reveling,(AA)
    Virgin Daughter(AB) Sidon, now crushed!

“Up, cross over to Cyprus;(AC)
    even there you will find no rest.”
13 Look at the land of the Babylonians,[c](AD)
    this people that is now of no account!
The Assyrians(AE) have made it
    a place for desert creatures;(AF)
they raised up their siege towers,(AG)
    they stripped its fortresses bare
    and turned it into a ruin.(AH)

14 Wail, you ships(AI) of Tarshish;(AJ)
    your fortress is destroyed!(AK)

15 At that time Tyre(AL) will be forgotten for seventy years,(AM) the span of a king’s life. But at the end of these seventy years, it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the prostitute:

16 “Take up a harp, walk through the city,
    you forgotten prostitute;(AN)
play the harp well, sing many a song,
    so that you will be remembered.”

17 At the end of seventy years,(AO) the Lord will deal with Tyre. She will return to her lucrative prostitution(AP) and will ply her trade with all the kingdoms on the face of the earth.(AQ) 18 Yet her profit and her earnings will be set apart for the Lord;(AR) they will not be stored up or hoarded. Her profits will go to those who live before the Lord,(AS) for abundant food and fine clothes.(AT)
