4 O SENHOR diz:
“Israel, se você quiser voltar para mim,
então volte.
Afaste da minha vista os seus ídolos detestáveis.
Não vá atrás de outros deuses.
2 Se fizer essas coisas,
então você vai poder usar o meu nome para fazer uma promessa.
Você vai poder dizer:
‘Tão certo como o SENHOR vive’.
Você vai poder usar essas palavras
com sinceridade, justiça e honestidade.
Se você fizer essas coisas,
então eu, o Senhor, abençoarei as nações,
e elas cantarão louvores sobre o que o Senhor tem feito”.
3 Isto é o que o SENHOR diz ao povo de Judá e de Jerusalém:
“Cultivem os campos não arados
e não plantem sementes entre os espinhos.
4 Povo de Judá e de Jerusalém,
circuncidem os seus corações para assim poderem honrar o SENHOR.
Que não fique nada do que vocês eram antes.[a]
Não seja que, por toda a sua maldade,
a minha ira se derrame sobre vocês como fogo
e arda a minha fúria sem que ninguém possa acalmá-la”.
A ameaça de invasão do norte
5 Diga isto para o povo de Judá:
“Habitantes de Jerusalém:
‘Toquem a trombeta por todo o país’.
Gritem forte e digam:
‘Juntem-se todos e vão para as cidades com altos muros’.
6 Levantem uma bandeira para advertir a Sião que o desastre está perto.
Corram e procurem um refúgio, não percam tempo.
Do norte vou trazer desastre
e grande destruição”.
7 Um leão saiu da sua caverna
e o destruidor das nações já está a caminho.
Ele saiu do seu lugar para destruir a terra de vocês.
As suas cidades serão transformadas num monte de ruínas desoladas.
8 Vistam as suas túnicas de luto
e lamentem a sua pena,
pois a ardente fúria do SENHOR
não se afastou de nós.
9 O SENHOR diz: “Quando isso acontecer,
o rei e os seus comandantes perderão a coragem,
os sacerdotes ficarão aterrorizados
e os profetas ficarão maravilhados”.
10 Então eu disse:
—Isso é terrível, SENHOR Deus! O Senhor enganou Judá e Jerusalém dizendo que estariam bem. Mas na realidade eles têm uma espada ameaçando as suas gargantas.
11 Nesse momento será dito a este povo e a Jerusalém:
“Um vento que queima sopra desde os montes no deserto
e vai contra o meu querido povo.
Não é o vento que ajuda a separar
o trigo da palha,
12 mas é um vento mais forte do que esse.
Eu farei que venha porque pronunciarei a sentença contra eles”.
13 Vejam! O inimigo se levanta como as nuvens,
os seus carros de combate parecem uma tempestade,
os seus cavalos são mais rápidos do que as águias.
Ai de nós, estamos perdidos!
14 Jerusalém, limpe todo o mal do seu coração,
para que possa ser salva.
Quanto tempo mais você vai acolher
na sua cabeça pensamentos maus?
15 Alguém traz notícias desde a terra de Dã[b];
se anuncia o mal desde os montes de Efraim.[c]
16 “Que as nações escutem
o que acontece com Jerusalém,
desde terras distantes vêm inimigos
dando gritos de guerra contra as cidades de Judá.
17 Eles a cercaram como guardas que vigiam um campo,
porque se rebelou contra mim”.
É a decisão do SENHOR.
18 “Tudo isso acontece com ela pela sua má conduta
e pelo mal que fez.
Este é o seu castigo,
castigo cruel que fere o seu coração”.
O grito de Judá
19 Que dor! Que dor!
Dói até o mais profundo do meu ser.
Meu coração se agita no meu interior,
não vou me calar.
É que ouvi o som da trombeta,
e o grito de guerra.
20 Um desastre trás outro!
Todo o país está em ruínas!
Num momento foram destruídas as minhas tendas
e arrancadas as minhas cortinas.
21 Quanto tempo mais terei que ver a bandeira
e ouvir o som da trombeta de guerra?
22 O SENHOR diz: “Meu povo é louco.
Eles não me conhecem.
São crianças insensatas
que não entendem nada.
São muito inteligentes para fazer o mal,
mas não sabem fazer o bem”.
23 Olhei para a terra,
mas reinava o caos e não tinha nada nela.
Olhei para o céu,
mas não tinha luz.[d]
24 Olhei para as montanhas
e elas estavam tremendo.
Todos os montes se estremeceram.
25 Olhei e vi que não havia nenhum ser humano,
e todas as aves do céu tinham desaparecido.
26 Vi que a terra fértil tinha virado um deserto
e todas as cidades tinham sido destruídas pela obra do SENHOR.
A sua fúria ardente fez isso.
27 O SENHOR diz: “Toda a terra será arrasada,
mas não a destruirei completamente.
28 Por isso a terra estará de luto
e o céu se escurecerá.
Eu falei e não vou me arrepender;
tomei uma decisão e não mudarei de opinião.
29 “Quando ouvirem o barulho de cavalos e de arqueiros,
os habitantes de todas as cidades fugirão.
Alguns se esconderão em cavernas,[e]
outros em matagais,
e alguns outros subirão pelos rochedos.
Todas as cidades serão abandonadas
e não ficará ninguém nelas.
30 “E você, completamente desolada, o que vai fazer?
O que faz vestida de vermelho tão elegante?
Usa joias de ouro
e bastante maquiagem nos olhos.
Mas você se arruma para nada,
pois os seus amantes a desprezam
e agora o que eles querem é matá-la.
31 Ouço gritos de dor,
como o de uma mulher que se queixa
ao dar à luz o seu primeiro filho.
São os gritos de dor da bonita Sião,
ofegante, estende os braços e diz:
‘Pobre de mim, já não posso mais
e vou morrer nas mãos de assassinos!’”

Judah Threatened with Invasion
4 “If you will return, O Israel,” says the Lord,
“If you will return to Me,
And if you will put away your detestable things and remove your man-made gods from My sight,
And not stray or waver,

And if you swear [your oaths], ‘As the Lord lives,’
In truth, in justice, and in righteousness,
Then the nations will bless themselves in Him,
And in Him they will glory.”
3 For this is what the Lord says to the men of Judah and to Jerusalem,
“Plow your uncultivated ground [for a season],
And do not sow among thorns.
4
“Circumcise (dedicate, sanctify) yourselves to the Lord
And remove the foreskin [sins] of your heart,
Men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem,
Or else My wrath will go forth like fire [consuming all that gets in its way]
And burn and there will be no one to quench it,
Because of the evil of your acts.”

Declare in Judah and proclaim in Jerusalem, and say,
“Blow the trumpet in the land;
Cry aloud and say,
‘Assemble yourselves, and let us go
Into the fortified cities.’

“Raise a banner toward Zion [to mark the way for those seeking safety inside Jerusalem’s walls]!
Seek refuge, do not stand [immobile],
For I am bringing evil from the north (the army of Babylon),
And great destruction.
7
“A lion has left his lair,
And a destroyer of nations is on his way.
He has gone out from his place
To desolate your land;
Your cities will be in ruins
Without an inhabitant.
8
“For this reason, put on sackcloth [for mourning],
Lament (mourn with expressions of grief for the dead) and wail,
For the fierce anger of the Lord
Has not turned back from us.”
9 “It shall come about in that day,” says the Lord, “that the heart and courage of the king will fail (be paralyzed), and also the heart of the princes; the priests will be appalled and the prophets will be astounded and horrified.”
10 Then I said, “[a]Alas, Lord God! Surely You have completely deceived and misled this people and Jerusalem, [for the prophets represented You as] saying [to Your people], ‘You will have peace,’ but [in fact] a sword reaches to their throat.”
11 In that time it will be said to this people and to Jerusalem, “A scorching wind from the barren heights in the wilderness [comes at My command] against the daughter of My people—not [a wind] to winnow and not to cleanse [from chaff, as when threshing, but] 12 a wind too strong and full for this comes at My word. Now I will also speak judgment against My people.”

“Behold, the enemy comes up like clouds,
His chariots like the whirlwind;
His horses are swifter than eagles.
Woe (judgment is coming) to us, for we are ruined!”
14
O Jerusalem, wash your heart from wickedness,
That you may be saved.
How long will your wicked and immoral thoughts
Lodge within you?
15
For a voice declares from Dan [far in the north],
And proclaims evil from [b]Mount Ephraim.
16
“Warn the [neighboring] nations now [that our enemy is coming]!
Announce to Jerusalem,
‘Besiegers are coming from a far country,
And they lift their voices and shout against the cities of Judah.
17
‘Like watchmen of a field they are against her on all sides,
Because she has rebelled against Me,’ says the Lord.
18
“Your ways and your deeds
Have brought these things on you.
This is your tragedy and doom; how bitter,
How it has touched your heart!”
Lament over Judah’s Devastation
19
My soul, my soul! I writhe in anguish and pain! Oh, the walls of my heart!
My heart is pounding and throbbing within me;
I cannot be silent,
For you have heard, O my soul,
The sound of the trumpet,
The alarm of war.
20
News of one [terrible] disaster comes close after another,
For the whole land is devastated;
Suddenly my tents are spoiled and destroyed,
My [tent] curtains [ruined] in a moment.
21
How long [O Lord] must I see the banner [marking the way for flight]
And hear the sound of the trumpet [urging the people to run for safety]?
22
“For My people are stupid and foolish,” [says the Lord to Jeremiah];
“They do not know Me;
They are foolish children
And have no understanding.
They are shrewd [enough] to do evil,
But they do not know [how] to do good.”
23
I looked at the earth [in my vision], and behold, it was [as at the time of creation] formless and void;
And to the heavens, and they had no light.
24
I looked at the mountains, and behold, they were trembling,
And all the hills moved back and forth.
25
I looked, and behold, there was no man,
And all the birds of the air had fled.
26
I looked, and behold, the fertile land was a wilderness,
And all its cities were pulled down
Before the [presence of the] Lord, before His fierce anger.
27
Therefore says the Lord,
“The whole land shall be a desolation,
Yet I will not cause total destruction.(A)
28
“For this reason the earth shall mourn
And the heavens above shall become dark,
Because I have spoken, I have decided,
And I will not change my mind (relent), nor will I turn back from it.”
29
Every city runs away at the sound of the horsemen and archers.
They go into the thickets and climb among the rocks;
Every city is deserted,
And no man lives in them.
30
And you, O desolate one, what will you do?
Though you clothe yourself in scarlet,
Though you adorn yourself with ornaments of gold,
Though you enlarge your eyes with paint,
You make yourself beautiful in vain.
Your lovers (allies) despise you;
They seek your life.
31
For I heard a cry like a woman in labor,
The anguish as of one giving birth to her first child,
The cry of the Daughter of Zion (Jerusalem), who gasps for breath,
Who stretches out her hands, saying,
“Woe is me [my judgment comes]! I faint [in fear] before the murderers.”

4 “If you, Israel, will return,(A)
then return to me,”
declares the Lord.
“If you put your detestable idols(B) out of my sight
and no longer go astray,
2 and if in a truthful, just and righteous way
you swear,(C) ‘As surely as the Lord lives,’(D)
then the nations will invoke blessings(E) by him
and in him they will boast.(F)”
3 This is what the Lord says to the people of Judah and to Jerusalem:
“Break up your unplowed ground(G)
and do not sow among thorns.(H)
4 Circumcise yourselves to the Lord,
circumcise your hearts,(I)
you people of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem,
or my wrath(J) will flare up and burn like fire(K)
because of the evil(L) you have done—
burn with no one to quench(M) it.
Disaster From the North
5 “Announce in Judah and proclaim(N) in Jerusalem and say:
‘Sound the trumpet(O) throughout the land!’
Cry aloud and say:
‘Gather together!
Let us flee to the fortified cities!’(P)
6 Raise the signal(Q) to go to Zion!
Flee for safety without delay!
For I am bringing disaster(R) from the north,(S)
even terrible destruction.”
7 A lion(T) has come out of his lair;(U)
a destroyer(V) of nations has set out.
He has left his place
to lay waste(W) your land.
Your towns will lie in ruins(X)
without inhabitant.
8 So put on sackcloth,(Y)
lament(Z) and wail,
for the fierce anger(AA) of the Lord
has not turned away from us.
9 “In that day,” declares the Lord,
“the king and the officials will lose heart,(AB)
the priests will be horrified,
and the prophets will be appalled.”(AC)
10 Then I said, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! How completely you have deceived(AD) this people and Jerusalem by saying, ‘You will have peace,’(AE) when the sword is at our throats!”
11 At that time this people and Jerusalem will be told, “A scorching wind(AF) from the barren heights in the desert blows toward my people, but not to winnow or cleanse; 12 a wind(AG) too strong for that comes from me. Now I pronounce my judgments(AH) against them.”
13 Look! He advances like the clouds,(AI)
his chariots(AJ) come like a whirlwind,(AK)
his horses(AL) are swifter than eagles.(AM)
Woe to us! We are ruined!(AN)
14 Jerusalem, wash(AO) the evil from your heart and be saved.(AP)
How long(AQ) will you harbor wicked thoughts?
15 A voice is announcing from Dan,(AR)
proclaiming disaster from the hills of Ephraim.(AS)
16 “Tell this to the nations,
proclaim concerning Jerusalem:
‘A besieging army is coming from a distant land,(AT)
raising a war cry(AU) against the cities of Judah.(AV)
17 They surround(AW) her like men guarding a field,
because she has rebelled(AX) against me,’”
declares the Lord.
18 “Your own conduct and actions(AY)
have brought this on you.(AZ)
This is your punishment.
How bitter(BA) it is!
How it pierces to the heart!”
19 Oh, my anguish, my anguish!(BB)
I writhe in pain.(BC)
Oh, the agony of my heart!
My heart pounds(BD) within me,
I cannot keep silent.(BE)
For I have heard the sound of the trumpet;(BF)
I have heard the battle cry.(BG)
20 Disaster follows disaster;(BH)
the whole land lies in ruins.(BI)
In an instant my tents(BJ) are destroyed,
my shelter in a moment.
21 How long must I see the battle standard(BK)
and hear the sound of the trumpet?(BL)
22 “My people are fools;(BM)
they do not know me.(BN)
They are senseless children;
they have no understanding.(BO)
They are skilled in doing evil;(BP)
they know not how to do good.”(BQ)
23 I looked at the earth,
and it was formless and empty;(BR)
and at the heavens,
and their light(BS) was gone.
24 I looked at the mountains,
and they were quaking;(BT)
all the hills were swaying.
25 I looked, and there were no people;
every bird in the sky had flown away.(BU)
26 I looked, and the fruitful land was a desert;(BV)
all its towns lay in ruins(BW)
before the Lord, before his fierce anger.(BX)
27 This is what the Lord says:
“The whole land will be ruined,(BY)
though I will not destroy(BZ) it completely.
28 Therefore the earth will mourn(CA)
and the heavens above grow dark,(CB)
because I have spoken and will not relent,(CC)
I have decided and will not turn back.(CD)”
29 At the sound of horsemen and archers(CE)
every town takes to flight.(CF)
Some go into the thickets;
some climb up among the rocks.(CG)
All the towns are deserted;(CH)
no one lives in them.
