15 Herren svarede: „Om så selveste Moses eller Samuel gik i forbøn for disse mennesker, ville jeg ikke redde dem. Bort med dem! Jeg kan ikke holde ud at se på dem. 2 Hvis de spørger dig: ‚Hvor skal vi gå hen?’ så sig til dem fra mig: ‚Nogle er bestemt til at dø af sygdom, nogle vil blive dræbt i krigen, nogle vil dø af sult, og nogle vil blive ført i eksil.’ 3 Jeg har udpeget fire bødler: Sværdet til at dræbe, hundene til at slæbe ligene bort, gribbene og de vilde dyr til at flænse og æde. 4 Kong Manasse af Juda, Hizkijas søn, var topmålet af ugudelighed og ondskab, og hele folket fulgte ham.[a] Derfor vil jeg straffe jer så eftertrykkeligt, at resten af verden vil blive rædselsslagen over at høre det.”
5 Herren fortsatte: „Hvem vil vise dig sympati, Jerusalem? Hvem vil sørge over dig? Hvem vil bekymre sig om, hvordan det går dig? 6 Du har svigtet mig og vendt mig ryggen—derfor må jeg straffe dig så hårdt. Min tålmodighed med dig er slut. 7 Jeg vil behandle mit folk i alle landets byer som vinden, der blæser avnerne bort. Jeg vil gøre det af med dem, fordi de nægter at omvende sig fra deres ondskab. 8 Der bliver flere enker, end der er sandkorn på stranden. Ved højlys dag er fjenden over dem. Mødre gribes pludselig af fortvivlelse, når de hører, at deres sønner i hæren er døde. 9 Enhver mor, der har mange sønner, bryder sammen og gisper efter vejret. Hendes fremtidshåb er slukket, som om solen gik ned ved middagstid. Hun sidder barnløs tilbage, skuffet og vanæret. Hvis nogen overlever, skal de overgives til fjenden og dræbes.”
Jeremias beklager sig over en profets lod
10 Da udbrød jeg: „Åh, bare min mor dog aldrig havde født mig! Alle er vrede på mig, selv om jeg hverken har lånt penge ud eller lånt af andre. Alligevel forbander de mig alle vegne.”
11 Herren svarede mig: „Jeg vil sørge for, at det går dig godt. Når dine fjender kommer i vanskeligheder, vil de tigge dig om at gå i forbøn for dem.”[b]
12 Herren fortsatte: „Kan man bøje en stang, der er lavet af jern eller bronze? 13 Fordi mit folk har syndet, vil jeg udlevere deres rigdomme til fjenderne som krigsbytte. 14 Deres fjender skal føre dem bort som slaver til et land, de ikke kender, for min vrede imod dem er som en fortærende ild.”
15 Derpå sagde jeg: „Herre, du ved, hvad jeg må lide for din skyld. Folk er vrede på mig, fordi jeg bringer dem dit ord. Lad dem ikke få held til at slå mig ihjel, men lad dem få, hvad de har fortjent. 16 Dine ord tog jeg til mig, og de gjorde mig glad og tilfreds. Jeg er jo din tjener, almægtige Gud. 17 Jeg gik ikke ud for at more mig, som andre mennesker gør, men holdt mig for mig selv for at kunne høre dit ord. Og jeg var vred og frustreret over alle deres synder. 18 Hvor længe vil de blive ved med at forfølge mig? Hvorfor kan min smerte ikke lindres? Er du som en bæk i ørkenen, der er uden vand, når man har mest brug for det?”
19 Herren svarede: „Hvis du vil stole helt og fuldt på mig i stedet for at beklage dig, kan jeg bruge dig som min profet. Er du villig til at sige sandheden i stedet for tomme løfter, kan du få lov at være mit talerør. Det er dig, der skal influere de andre, og ikke omvendt. 20 Jeg vil gøre dig stærk som en mur af bronze, ingen kan ødelægge. De vil kæmpe imod dig, men kan ikke besejre dig, for jeg er med dig for at bevare dig og redde dig. 21 Ja, jeg vil redde dig fra de ondes angreb og befri dig fra voldsmændenes hænder.”

15 Then said the Lord unto me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind could not be toward this people: cast them out of my sight, and let them go forth.
2 And it shall come to pass, if they say unto thee, Whither shall we go forth? then thou shalt tell them, Thus saith the Lord; Such as are for death, to death; and such as are for the sword, to the sword; and such as are for the famine, to the famine; and such as are for the captivity, to the captivity.
3 And I will appoint over them four kinds, saith the Lord: the sword to slay, and the dogs to tear, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the earth, to devour and destroy.
4 And I will cause them to be removed into all kingdoms of the earth, because of Manasseh the son of Hezekiah king of Judah, for that which he did in Jerusalem.
5 For who shall have pity upon thee, O Jerusalem? or who shall bemoan thee? or who shall go aside to ask how thou doest?
6 Thou hast forsaken me, saith the Lord, thou art gone backward: therefore will I stretch out my hand against thee, and destroy thee; I am weary with repenting.
7 And I will fan them with a fan in the gates of the land; I will bereave them of children, I will destroy my people since they return not from their ways.
8 Their widows are increased to me above the sand of the seas: I have brought upon them against the mother of the young men a spoiler at noonday: I have caused him to fall upon it suddenly, and terrors upon the city.
9 She that hath borne seven languisheth: she hath given up the ghost; her sun is gone down while it was yet day: she hath been ashamed and confounded: and the residue of them will I deliver to the sword before their enemies, saith the Lord.
10 Woe is me, my mother, that thou hast borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have neither lent on usury, nor men have lent to me on usury; yet every one of them doth curse me.
11 The Lord said, Verily it shall be well with thy remnant; verily I will cause the enemy to entreat thee well in the time of evil and in the time of affliction.
12 Shall iron break the northern iron and the steel?
13 Thy substance and thy treasures will I give to the spoil without price, and that for all thy sins, even in all thy borders.
14 And I will make thee to pass with thine enemies into a land which thou knowest not: for a fire is kindled in mine anger, which shall burn upon you.
15 O Lord, thou knowest: remember me, and visit me, and revenge me of my persecutors; take me not away in thy longsuffering: know that for thy sake I have suffered rebuke.
16 Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O Lord God of hosts.
17 I sat not in the assembly of the mockers, nor rejoiced; I sat alone because of thy hand: for thou hast filled me with indignation.
18 Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound incurable, which refuseth to be healed? wilt thou be altogether unto me as a liar, and as waters that fail?
19 Therefore thus saith the Lord, If thou return, then will I bring thee again, and thou shalt stand before me: and if thou take forth the precious from the vile, thou shalt be as my mouth: let them return unto thee; but return not thou unto them.
20 And I will make thee unto this people a fenced brasen wall: and they shall fight against thee, but they shall not prevail against thee: for I am with thee to save thee and to deliver thee, saith the Lord.
21 And I will deliver thee out of the hand of the wicked, and I will redeem thee out of the hand of the terrible.

The Lord Will Not Relent
15 Then the Lord said to me, (A)“Even if (B)Moses and (C)Samuel stood before Me, My [a]mind would not be favorable toward this people. Cast them out of My sight, and let them go forth. 2 And it shall be, if they say to you, ‘Where should we go?’ then you shall tell them, ‘Thus says the Lord:
(D)“Such as are for death, to death;
And such as are for the sword, to the sword;
And such as are for the famine, to the famine;
And such as are for the (E)captivity, to the captivity.” ’
3 “And I will (F)appoint over them four forms of destruction,” says the Lord: “the sword to slay, the dogs to drag, (G)the birds of the heavens and the beasts of the earth to devour and destroy. 4 I will hand them over to (H)trouble, to all kingdoms of the earth, because of (I)Manasseh the son of Hezekiah, king of Judah, for what he did in Jerusalem.
5 “For who will have pity on you, O Jerusalem?
Or who will bemoan you?
Or who will turn aside to ask how you are doing?
6 (J)You have forsaken Me,” says the Lord,
“You have (K)gone backward.
Therefore I will stretch out My hand against you and destroy you;
(L)I am [b]weary of relenting!
7 And I will winnow them with a winnowing fan in the gates of the land;
I will (M)bereave them of children;
I will destroy My people,
Since they (N)do not return from their ways.

Against the mother of the young men,
A plunderer at noonday;
I will cause anguish and terror to fall on them (O)suddenly.
9 “She(P) languishes who has borne seven;
She has breathed her last;

She has been ashamed and confounded.
And the remnant of them I will deliver to the sword
Before their enemies,” says the Lord.
Jeremiah’s Dejection
10 (R)Woe is me, my mother,
That you have borne me,
A man of strife and a man of contention to the whole [c]earth!
I have neither lent for interest,
Nor have men lent to me for interest.
Every one of them curses me.
11 The Lord said:
“Surely it will be well with your remnant;
Surely I will cause (S)the enemy to intercede with you
In the time of adversity and in the time of affliction.
12 Can anyone break iron,
The northern iron and the bronze?
13 Your wealth and your treasures
I will give as (T)plunder without price,
Because of all your sins,
Throughout your territories.
14 And I will [d]make you cross over with your enemies
(U)Into a land which you do not know;
For a (V)fire is kindled in My anger,
Which shall burn upon you.”
15 O Lord, (W)You know;
Remember me and [e]visit me,
And (X)take vengeance for me on my persecutors.
In Your enduring patience, do not take me away.
Know that (Y)for Your sake I have suffered rebuke.
16 Your words were found, and I (Z)ate them,
And (AA)Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart;
For I am called by Your name,
O Lord God of hosts.
17 (AB)I did not sit in the assembly of the mockers,
Nor did I rejoice;
I sat alone because of Your hand,
For You have filled me with indignation.
18 Why is my (AC)pain perpetual
And my wound incurable,
Which refuses to be healed?
Will You surely be to me (AD)like an unreliable stream,
As waters that [f]fail?
The Lord Reassures Jeremiah
19 Therefore thus says the Lord:
(AE)“If you return,
Then I will bring you back;
You shall (AF)stand before Me;
If you (AG)take out the precious from the vile,
You shall be as My mouth.
Let them return to you,
But you must not return to them.
20 And I will make you to this people a fortified bronze (AH)wall;
And they will fight against you,
But (AI)they shall not prevail against you;
For I am with you to save you
And deliver you,” says the Lord.
21 “I will deliver you from the hand of the wicked,
And I will redeem you from the grip of the terrible.”
