16     Thus says the Lord:
Stand by the earliest roads,
    ask the pathways of old,[a]
“Which is the way to good?” and walk it;
    thus you will find rest for yourselves.
    But they said, “We will not walk it.”(A)
17 I raised up watchmen[b] for them:
    “Pay attention to the sound of the trumpet!”
    But they said, “We will not pay attention!”
18 Therefore hear, O nations,
    and know, O earth,
    what I will do with them:
19 See, I bring evil upon this people,
    the fruit of their own schemes,
Because they did not pay attention to my words,
    because they rejected my law.(B)
20 Of what use to me is incense that comes from Sheba,
    or sweet cane from far-off lands?
Your burnt offerings find no favor with me,
    your sacrifices do not please me.(C)

  2. 6:17 Watchmen: the prophets who, like Jeremiah, had upheld God’s moral law.

16 Thus says the Lord:
Stand at the crossroads, and look,
    and ask for the ancient paths,
where the good way lies; and walk in it,
    and find rest for your souls.
But they said, “We will not walk in it.”
17 Also I raised up sentinels for you:
    “Give heed to the sound of the trumpet!”
But they said, “We will not give heed.”
18 Therefore hear, O nations,
    and know, O congregation, what will happen to them.
19 Hear, O earth; I am going to bring disaster on this people,
    the fruit of their schemes,
because they have not given heed to my words;
    and as for my teaching, they have rejected it.
20 Of what use to me is frankincense that comes from Sheba,
    or sweet cane from a distant land?
Your burnt offerings are not acceptable,
    nor are your sacrifices pleasing to me.

16 The Lord proclaims:
Stop at the crossroads and look around;
    ask for the ancient paths.
    Where is the good way?
Then walk in it
    and find a resting place for yourselves.
        But you[a] said, “We won’t go!”
17 Still, I have appointed watchmen to warn you.
    But you[b] said, “We won’t listen!”
18 Therefore, pay attention, nations;
        take notice, assembly,
        what is ahead of them.[c]
19 Pay attention, earth:
I’m bringing disaster upon my people,
    the fruit of their own devices,
    because they have ignored my words
    and they have rejected my teaching.
20 What use to me is incense from Sheba
    or sweet cane from a faraway land?
Your entirely burned offerings won’t buy your pardon;
    your sacrifices won’t appease me.

Because they have not listened to My words,
