They bent their tongues like their bows;
lies and not faithfulness prevail in the land,
for they proceed from one evil to another,
and they do not take me into account.(A)
This is the Lord’s declaration.

Imminent Ruin and Exile

Everyone has to be on guard against his friend.
Don’t trust any brother,
for every brother will certainly deceive,(B)
and every friend spread slander.(C)
Each one betrays his friend;(D)
no one tells the truth.
They have taught their tongues to speak lies;
they wear themselves out doing wrong.
You live in a world of deception.[a](E)
In their deception they refuse to know me.(F)
This is the Lord’s declaration.

Therefore, this is what the Lord of Armies says:

I am about to refine them and test them,(G)
for what else can I do
because of my dear[b] people?[c]
Their tongues are deadly arrows—
they speak deception.(H)

one speaks peaceably with his friend,
but inwardly he sets up an ambush.
Should I not punish them for these things?
This is the Lord’s declaration.
Should I not avenge myself(I)
on such a nation as this?

They all deceive their neighbors,
    and no one speaks the truth;
they have taught their tongues to speak lies;
    they commit iniquity and are too weary to repent.[a](C)
Oppression upon oppression, deceit[b] upon deceit!
    They refuse to know me, says the Lord.(D)

Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts:
I will now refine and test them,
    for what else can I do with the daughter of my people?(E)
Their tongue is a deadly arrow;
    it speaks deceit through the mouth.
They all speak friendly words to their neighbors
    but inwardly are planning to lay an ambush.(F)
Shall I not punish them for these things? says the Lord,
    and shall I not bring retribution
    on a nation such as this?(G)
