Jerusalem’s Last Warning

“Run for your lives, you people of Benjamin!
    Get out of Jerusalem!
Sound the alarm in Tekoa!
    Send up a signal at Beth-hakkerem!
A powerful army is coming from the north,
    coming with disaster and destruction.
O Jerusalem,[a] you are my beautiful and delicate daughter—
    but I will destroy you!
Enemies will surround you, like shepherds camped around the city.
    Each chooses a place for his troops to devour.
They shout, ‘Prepare for battle!
    Attack at noon!’
‘No, it’s too late; the day is fading,
    and the evening shadows are falling.’
‘Well then, let’s attack at night
    and destroy her palaces!’”

This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says:
“Cut down the trees for battering rams.
    Build siege ramps against the walls of Jerusalem.
This is the city to be punished,
    for she is wicked through and through.
She spouts evil like a fountain.
    Her streets echo with the sounds of violence and destruction.
    I always see her sickness and sores.
Listen to this warning, Jerusalem,
    or I will turn from you in disgust.
Listen, or I will turn you into a heap of ruins,
    a land where no one lives.”

  1. 6:2 Hebrew Daughter of Zion.

Yahweh Disciplines Israel

“Flee for safety, O sons of (A)Benjamin,
From the midst of Jerusalem!
Now blow a trumpet in Tekoa
And raise a signal over [a](B)Beth-haccerem,
For evil looks down from the (C)north,
As well as great destruction.
The comely and (D)delicate one, (E)the daughter of Zion, I will ruin.
(F)Shepherds and their flocks will come to her;
They will (G)pitch their tents [b]around her;
They will pasture each in his [c]place.
(H)Set yourselves apart for war against her;
Arise, and let us go up at (I)noon.
Woe to us, for the day declines,
For the shadows of the evening stretch out!
Arise, and let us go up by night
And [d](J)destroy her [e]palaces!”
For thus says Yahweh of hosts,
(K)Cut down her trees
And cast up a (L)siege against Jerusalem.
This is the city to be punished,
In whose midst there is only (M)oppression.
(N)Like a well [f]keeps its waters fresh,
So she [g]keeps fresh her evil.
(O)Violence and devastation are heard in her;
(P)Sickness and wounds are continually before Me.
(Q)Heed discipline, O Jerusalem,
Lest (R)My soul become disgusted at you,
Lest I make you a desolation,
A land not inhabited.”
