Jeremiah 6

The Message

A City Full of Lies

6 ^1-5“Run for your lives, children of Benjamin!
    Get out of Jerusalem, and now!
Give a blast on the ram’s horn in Blastville.
    Send up smoke signals from Smoketown.
Doom pours out of the north—
    massive terror!
I have likened my dear daughter Zion
    to a lovely meadow.
Well, now ‘shepherds’ from the north have discovered her
    and brought in their flocks of soldiers.
They’ve pitched camp all around her,
    and plan where they’ll ‘graze.’
And then, ‘Prepare to attack! The fight is on!
    To arms! We’ll strike at noon!
Oh, it’s too late? Day is dying?
    Evening shadows are upon us?
Well, up anyway! We’ll attack by night
    and tear apart her defenses stone by stone.’”

^6-8God-of-the-Angel-Armies gave the orders:

“Chop down her trees.
    Build a siege ramp against Jerusalem,
A city full of brutality,
    bursting with violence.
Just as a well holds a good supply of water,
    she supplies wickedness nonstop.
The streets echo the cries: ‘Violence! Rape!’
    Victims, bleeding and moaning, lie all over the place.
You’re in deep trouble, Jerusalem.
    You’ve pushed me to the limit.
You’re on the brink of being wiped out,
    being turned into a ghost town.”

⁹More orders from God-of-the-Angel-Armies:

“Time’s up! Harvest the grapes for judgment.
Salvage what’s left of Israel.
Go back over the vines.
Pick them clean, every last grape.

Is Anybody Listening?

^10-11“I’ve got something to say. Is anybody listening?
    I’ve a warning to post. Will anyone notice?
It’s hopeless! Their ears are stuffed with wax—
    deaf as a post, blind as a bat.
It’s hopeless! They’ve tuned out God.
    They don’t want to hear from me.
But I’m bursting with the wrath of God.
    I can’t hold it in much longer.

^11-12“So dump it on the children in the streets.
    Let it loose on the gangs of youth.
For no one’s exempt: Husbands and wives will be taken,
    the old and those ready to die;
Their homes will be given away—
    all they own, even their loved ones—
When I give the signal
    against all who live in this country.”
        God’s Decree.

^13-15“Everyone’s after the dishonest dollar,
    little people and big people alike.
Prophets and priests and everyone in between
    twist words and doctor truth.
My people are broken—shattered!—
    and they put on Band-Aids,
Saying, ‘It’s not so bad. You’ll be just fine.’
    But things are not ‘just fine’!
Do you suppose they are embarrassed
    over this outrage?
No, they have no shame.
    They don’t even know how to blush.
There’s no hope for them. They’ve hit bottom
    and there’s no getting up.
As far as I’m concerned,
    they’re finished.”
        God has spoken.

Death Is on the Prowl

^16-20God’s Message yet again:

“Go stand at the crossroads and look around.
    Ask for directions to the old road,
The tried-and-true road. Then take it.
    Discover the right route for your souls.
But they said, ‘Nothing doing.
    We aren’t going that way.’
I even provided watchmen for them
    to warn them, to set off the alarm.
But the people said, ‘It’s a false alarm.
    It doesn’t concern us.’
And so I’m calling in the nations as witnesses:
    ‘Watch, witnesses, what happens to them!’
And, ‘Pay attention, Earth!
    Don’t miss these bulletins.’
I’m visiting catastrophe on this people, the end result
    of the games they’ve been playing with me.
They’ve ignored everything I’ve said,
    had nothing but contempt for my teaching.
What would I want with incense brought in from Sheba,
    rare spices from exotic places?
Your burnt sacrifices in worship give me no pleasure.
    Your religious rituals mean nothing to me.”

²¹So listen to this. Here’s God’s verdict on your way of life:

“Watch out! I’m putting roadblocks and barriers
    on the road you’re taking.
They’ll send you sprawling,
    parents and children, neighbors and friends—
    and that will be the end of the lot of you.”

^22-23And listen to this verdict from God:

“Look out! An invasion from the north,
    a mighty power on the move from a faraway place:
Armed to the teeth,
    vicious and pitiless,
Booming like sea storm and thunder—tramp, tramp, tramp—
    riding hard on war horses,
In battle formation
    against you, dear Daughter Zion!”

^24-25We’ve heard the news,
    and we’re as limp as wet dishrags.
We’re paralyzed with fear.
    Terror has a death grip on our throats.
Don’t dare go outdoors!
    Don’t leave the house!
Death is on the prowl.
    Danger everywhere!

²⁶“Dear Daughter Zion: Dress in black.
    Blacken your face with ashes.
Weep most bitterly,
    as for an only child.
The countdown has begun . . . 
    six, five, four, three . . . 
    The Terror is on us!”

^27-30God gave me this task:

“I have made you the examiner of my people,
    to examine and weigh their lives.
They’re a thickheaded, hard-nosed bunch,
    rotten to the core, the lot of them.
Refining fires are cranked up to white heat,
    but the ore stays a lump, unchanged.
It’s useless to keep trying any longer.
    Nothing can refine evil out of them.
Men will give up and call them ‘slag,’
    thrown on the slag heap by me, their God.”

6 »¡Huyan, hijos de Benjamín,
De en medio de Jerusalén^(A)!
Toquen trompeta en Tecoa,
Y alcen señal sobre Bet Haquerem^[a]^(B),
Porque desde el norte se asoma el mal
Y una gran destrucción^(C).
²-»A la hermosa y delicada^(D) hija de Sión^(E) destruiré.
³-»A ella vendrán pastores^(F) con sus rebaños,
Levantarán sus tiendas a su alrededor^[b]^(G),
Y cada uno apacentará en su lugar^[c].
⁴-»Preparen^[d] guerra contra ella^(H);
Levántense y ataquemos^[e] al mediodía.
¡Ay de nosotros, porque el día declina,
Porque se extienden las sombras del anochecer^(I)!
⁵-»Levántense, ataquemos de noche
Y destruyamos sus palacios^[f]^(J)».

⁶Porque así dice el Señor de los ejércitos:

«Corten sus árboles,
Y pongan sitio^[g]^(K) contra Jerusalén.
Esta es la ciudad que ha de ser castigada^(L),
Todo dentro de ella es opresión^(M).
⁷-»Como un pozo mantiene frescas^[h] sus aguas^(N),
Así ella mantiene fresca^[i] su maldad.
En ella se oyen violencia y destrucción^(O);
Ante Mí hay de continuo enfermedades y heridas^(P).
⁸-»Sé precavida^(Q), oh Jerusalén,
No sea que mi alma se aleje de ti;
No sea que Yo te convierta en desolación,
En tierra despoblada^(R)».

⁹Así dice el Señor de los ejércitos:

«Buscarán^(S), rebuscarán como en una viña al remanente^(T) de Israel.
Vuelve a pasar tu mano como un vendimiador
Por los sarmientos».
¹⁰¿A quiénes hablaré y advertiré, para que oigan?
Sus oídos están cerrados^[j],
Y no pueden escuchar^(U).
La palabra del Señor les es oprobio^(V);
No se deleitan en ella.
¹¹Pero estoy lleno^(W) del furor del Señor,
Estoy cansado de retenerlo^(X).
«Derrámalo sobre los niños en la calle,
Y sobre la reunión^[k] de los jóvenes^(Y);
Porque serán apresados tanto el marido como la mujer,
El viejo y el muy anciano^[l].
¹²-»^(Z)Sus casas serán entregadas a otros,
Junto con sus campos y sus mujeres^(AA);
Porque extenderé Mi mano^(AB)
Contra los habitantes de esta^[m] tierra», declara el Señor.
¹³«Porque desde el menor hasta el mayor,
Todos ellos codician ganancias,
Y desde el profeta hasta el sacerdote^(AC),
Todos practican el engaño^(AD).
¹⁴-»Curan a la ligera el quebranto de Mi pueblo,
Diciendo: “Paz, paz”,
Pero no hay paz^(AE).
¹⁵-»¿Se han avergonzado de la abominación que han cometido?
Ciertamente no se han avergonzado,
Ni aún han sabido ruborizarse;
Por tanto caerán entre los que caigan;
En la hora que Yo los castigue serán derribados^(AF)», dice el Señor.

¹⁶Así dice el Señor:

«Párense en los caminos y miren,
Y pregunten por los senderos antiguos,
Cuál es el buen camino, y anden por él^(AG);
Y hallarán descanso para sus almas^(AH).
Pero dijeron: “No andaremos en él”.
¹⁷-»Entonces puse centinelas sobre ustedes, que dijeran:
“Escuchen el sonido de la trompeta”.
Pero dijeron: “No escucharemos^(AI)”.
¹⁸-»Por tanto, oigan, naciones,
Y entiende, congregación, lo que se hará entre ellos.
¹⁹-»Oye, tierra: Yo traigo una calamidad sobre este pueblo^(AJ),
El fruto de sus planes^(AK),
Porque no han escuchado Mis palabras,
Y han desechado Mi ley^(AL).
²⁰-»¿Para qué viene a Mí este incienso de Sabá^(AM)
Y la dulce^[n] caña^(AN) de una tierra lejana?
Sus holocaustos no son aceptables,
Y sus sacrificios no me agradan^(AO)».

²¹Por tanto, así dice el Señor:

«Yo pongo^[o] piedras de tropiezo delante de este pueblo^(AP),
Y tropezarán en ellas
Padres e hijos a una^(AQ);
El vecino y su prójimo perecerán».

²²Así dice el Señor:

«Viene un pueblo de tierras del norte^(AR),
Y una gran nación se levantará de los confines de la tierra^(AS).
²³-»Empuñan arco y jabalina,
Crueles son, no tienen misericordia;
Sus voces braman como el mar^(AT),
Y montan a caballo^(AU),
Como hombres dispuestos para la guerra
Contra ti, hija^(AV) de Sión».
²⁴Hemos oído de su fama^(AW),
Flaquean nuestras manos.
La angustia se ha apoderado de nosotros,
Dolor como de mujer de parto^(AX).
²⁵No salgas al campo^(AY)
Ni andes por el camino^(AZ),
Porque espada tiene el enemigo,
Hay terror por todas partes^(BA).
²⁶Hija de mi pueblo, cíñete el cilicio^(BB)
Y revuélcate en ceniza^(BC).
Haz duelo como por hijo único,
Lamento de gran amargura^(BD),
Porque de pronto el destructor
Vendrá sobre nosotros.
²⁷¶«Te he puesto como observador y como examinador entre Mi pueblo^(BE),
Para que conozcas y examines su conducta».
²⁸Todos ellos son rebeldes obstinados
Que andan calumniando^(BF).
Son de hierro y bronce^(BG);
Todos ellos están corrompidos.
²⁹El fuelle sopla con furor,
El plomo es consumido por el fuego;
En vano se sigue refinando,
Pues los malvados no son separados^(BH).
³⁰Los llaman plata de deshecho^(BI),
Porque el Señor los ha desechado^(BJ).
