Lord, do (A)Your eyes not look for honesty?
You have (B)struck them,
But they did not [a]weaken;
You have consumed them,
But they (C)refused to accept discipline.
They have (D)made their faces harder than rock;
They have refused to repent.

Then I said, “They are only the poor,
They are foolish;
For they (E)do not know the way of the Lord
Or the judgment of their God.
I will go to the great
And speak to them,
For (F)they know the way of the Lord
And the judgment of their God.”
But together they too have (G)broken the yoke
And burst the restraints.
Therefore (H)a lion from the forest will kill them,
A (I)wolf of the deserts will destroy them,
A (J)leopard is watching their cities.
Everyone who goes out of them will be torn in pieces,
Because their (K)wrongdoings are many,
Their apostasies are numerous.

  1. Jeremiah 5:3 Or become sick

O Jehovah, [a]do not thine eyes look upon [b]truth? thou hast stricken them, but they were not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive [c]correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.

Then I said, Surely these are poor; they are foolish; for they know not the way of Jehovah, nor the law of their God: I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they know the way of Jehovah, and the law of their God. But these with one accord have broken the yoke, and burst the bonds. Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, a wolf of the [d]evenings shall destroy them, a leopard shall watch against their cities; every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces; because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are increased.
