Profecía sobre Babilonia

50 (A)La palabra que el Señor habló acerca de Babilonia, la tierra de los caldeos(B), por medio[a] del profeta Jeremías:

2 «Anúncienlo entre las naciones y háganlo oír(C);
Levanten estandarte(D), háganlo oír.
No lo oculten, sino digan:
“Ha sido tomada Babilonia(E),
Está avergonzado Bel(F), destrozado[b] Merodac[c];
Han sido avergonzadas sus imágenes, destrozados[d] sus ídolos(G)”.
3 -»Porque ha subido contra ella una nación del norte(H)
Que hará de su tierra objeto de horror,
Y no habrá habitante en ella(I).
Tanto hombres como animales habrán huido, se habrán ido(J).
4 -»En aquellos días y en aquel tiempo», declara el Señor,
«Vendrán los israelitas, ellos junto con los hijos de Judá(K);
Vendrán andando y llorando(L),
Y al Señor su Dios buscarán(M).
5 -»Preguntarán por el camino(N) de Sión,
Hacia donde[e] volverán sus rostros;
Vendrán[f] para unirse al Señor
En un pacto eterno que no será olvidado(O).
6 -»Mi pueblo ha venido a ser como ovejas perdidas;
Sus pastores las han descarriado(P),
Haciéndolas vagar(Q) por los montes.
Han andado de monte en collado(R)
Y han olvidado su lugar de descanso(S).
7 -»Todos los que los hallaban, los devoraban;
Y sus enemigos han dicho: “No somos culpables(T),
Porque ellos han pecado contra el Señor, morada de justicia(U),
El Señor, esperanza de sus padres(V)”.
8 -»Huyan de en medio de Babilonia,
Y salgan[g] de la tierra de los caldeos(W);
Sean como machos cabríos al frente[h] del rebaño.
9 -»Porque Yo hago despertar y subir contra Babilonia(X)
Una horda de grandes naciones de la tierra del norte,
Que se alinearán para la batalla contra ella;
Desde allí será llevada cautiva.
Sus flechas serán como de diestro guerrero[i]
Que no vuelve con las manos vacías.
10 -»Y Caldea[j] se convertirá en botín;
Todos los que la saqueen se saciarán», declara el Señor(Y).
11 ¶«Porque ustedes se alegran, porque se regocijan,
Saqueadores de Mi heredad(Z),
Porque saltan como novilla trilladora[k](AA)
Y relinchan como caballos sementales[l],
12 Su madre se avergonzará[m] en gran manera,
Será humillada la que los dio a luz(AB).
Será la última de las naciones:
Desierto, sequedal y lugar desolado(AC).
13 -»A causa del enojo del Señor, no será habitada(AD),
Sino que estará desolada toda ella(AE);
Todo el que pase por Babilonia se quedará atónito
Y silbará a causa de todas sus heridas(AF).
14 -»Pónganse en orden contra Babilonia en derredor suyo(AG),
Todos los que entesan[n] el arco;
Tiren contra ella, no escatimen las flechas,
Porque ha pecado contra el Señor.
15 -»Den grito de guerra en derredor contra ella.
Se ha rendido[o](AH), caen sus columnas,
Son derribadas sus murallas(AI).
Porque esta es la venganza del Señor(AJ):
Tomen venganza de ella;
Como ella ha hecho, así hagan con ella(AK).
16 -»Exterminen de Babilonia al sembrador
Y al que maneja la hoz en tiempo de la siega(AL);
Ante la espada opresora[p],
Cada uno volverá a su pueblo(AM),
Cada uno huirá a su tierra(AN).

17 »Rebaño descarriado(AO) es Israel; los leones lo han ahuyentado(AP). Primero lo devoró el rey de Asiria(AQ), y después[q] Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia(AR), quebró sus huesos. 18 Por tanto, así dice el Señor de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: “Voy a castigar al rey de Babilonia y a su tierra, como castigué al rey de Asiria(AS). 19 Y volveré a traer a Israel a su pastizal(AT), y pastará en el Carmelo y en Basán, y se saciarán sus deseos[r] en la región montañosa de Efraín(AU) y en Galaad. 20 En aquellos días y en aquel tiempo”, declara el Señor, “se buscará la iniquidad de Israel, pero no habrá ninguna, y los pecados de Judá, pero no se hallarán; porque perdonaré(AV) a los que Yo haya dejado como remanente(AW)”.

21 ¶»Sube contra la tierra de Merataim[s], contra ella
Y contra los habitantes de Pecod[t](AX).
Mátalos y destrúyelos[u]», declara el Señor,
«Y haz conforme a todo lo que te he ordenado.
22 -»¡Hay estruendo de guerra en el país,
Y gran destrucción(AY)!
23 -»¡Cómo ha sido cortado y quebrado
El martillo de toda la tierra!
¡Cómo se ha convertido Babilonia
En objeto de horror entre las naciones(AZ)!
24 -»Babilonia, te puse lazo, y[v] fuiste atrapada(BA),
Y tú no te diste cuenta(BB);
Has sido sorprendida y[w] apresada
Porque te pusiste a provocar al Señor(BC)».
25 El Señor ha abierto Su arsenal
Y ha sacado las armas de Su indignación(BD),
Porque esta es obra del Señor, Dios[x](BE) de los ejércitos,
En la tierra de los caldeos.
26 Vengan contra ella desde los últimos confines[y](BF);
Abran sus graneros,
Conviértanla en montones
Y destrúyanla por completo[z](BG);
Que no le quede nada.
27 Pasen a espada todos sus novillos;
Que desciendan al matadero(BH).
¡Ay de ellos(BI), porque ha llegado su día,
La hora de su castigo(BJ)!
28 Se oye la voz de los que huyeron y escaparon de la tierra de Babilonia(BK)
Anunciando en Sión la venganza del Señor nuestro Dios(BL),
La venganza de Su templo(BM).
29 ¶«Recluten arqueros[aa] contra Babilonia,
A todos los que entesan[ab] el arco;
Acampen contra ella por todos lados,
Que no haya escape[ac].
Denle el pago conforme a su obra;
Conforme a todo lo que ha hecho, así hagan con ella(BN);
Porque se ha vuelto insolente contra el Señor(BO),
Contra el Santo de Israel.
30 -»Por tanto, sus jóvenes caerán en sus calles,
Y todos sus hombres de guerra serán silenciados[ad](BP) en aquel día», declara el Señor(BQ).
31 «Estoy contra ti, arrogante[ae]»,
Declara el Señor, Dios[af] de los ejércitos(BR),
«Porque ha llegado tu día,
La hora en que te castigaré[ag].
32 -»Y la arrogante[ah] tropezará y caerá(BS)
Sin que nadie la levante.
Prenderé fuego a sus ciudades,
El cual devorará todos sus alrededores(BT)».

33 Así dice el Señor de los ejércitos:

«Oprimidos están los israelitas
Y los hijos de Judá también;
Todos los que los tomaron cautivos los han retenido,
Se han negado a soltarlos(BU).
34 -»Pero su Redentor es fuerte(BV), el Señor de los ejércitos es Su nombre(BW);
Defenderá su causa con energía
Para traer reposo a la[ai] tierra(BX)
Y turbación a los habitantes de Babilonia(BY).
35 -»Espada(BZ) contra los caldeos», declara el Señor,
«Y contra los habitantes de Babilonia(CA),
Contra sus oficiales y sus sabios(CB).
36 -»Espada contra los impostores[aj], y se volverán necios(CC).
Espada contra sus valientes(CD), y serán destrozados[ak](CE).
37 -»Espada contra sus caballos y contra sus carros(CF),
Y contra todos los extranjeros(CG) que están[al] en medio de ella,
Y serán como mujeres(CH).
Espada contra sus tesoros, y serán saqueados.
38 -»Sequía[am] sobre sus aguas, y se secarán(CI);
Porque es una tierra de ídolos,
Y se vuelven locos por sus horribles ídolos(CJ).
39 -»Por tanto, allí vivirán las fieras del desierto junto con las hienas[an],
También vivirán avestruces en ella(CK);
Nunca más será habitada
Ni poblada por generación y generación(CL).
40 -»Como cuando Dios destruyó a Sodoma,
A Gomorra y a sus ciudades vecinas», declara el Señor,
«Ningún hombre habitará allí,
Ni residirá en ella hijo de hombre(CM).
41 ¶»Un pueblo viene del norte,
Una gran nación,
Y muchos reyes se levantarán
De los confines de la tierra(CN).
42 -»Empuñan arco y jabalina;
Son crueles y no tienen misericordia(CO).
Su voz ruge como el mar(CP),
Y a caballo van montados,
Alineados como un solo hombre para la batalla(CQ)
Contra ti, hija(CR) de Babilonia(CS).
43 -»El rey de Babilonia ha oído noticias(CT) de ellos,
Y flaquean sus manos;
La angustia se ha apoderado de él,
Agonía como de mujer de parto(CU).
44 -»Viene uno que subirá como león
De la espesura[ao] del Jordán a una pradera de verdes pastos[ap],
Y[aq] en un instante lo haré huir de él,
Y al que sea escogido nombraré sobre él(CV).
Porque ¿quién es como Yo(CW) y quién me citará a juicio?
¿Quién es el pastor que me podrá resistir(CX)?».

45 Por tanto, oigan el plan que el Señor ha trazado contra Babilonia(CY), y los designios que ha decretado contra la tierra de los caldeos; ciertamente los arrastrarán, aun a los más pequeños del rebaño(CZ); ciertamente a causa de ellos hará una desolación de su pastizal[ar]. 46 Al grito[as] de «¡Babilonia ha sido tomada!», la tierra tiembla(DA) y el clamor se oye entre las naciones(DB).

A Prophecy About Babylon and Israel

50 The word that the Lord spoke concerning Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans, through Jeremiah the prophet:

2 Declare and proclaim this among the nations.
Set up a signal flag.
Proclaim and do not hide it.
Say this:
Babylon has been taken.
Bel has been put to shame.
Marduk is terrified.
Babylon’s images have been put to shame.
Her filthy idols are terrified.
3 A nation has come up against her out of the north.
It will make her land desolate,
and no one will dwell in it.
Both man and animal have wandered away.
They are gone.

4 In those days, and in that time, declares the Lord,
the people of Israel will come,
they and the people of Judah together with them.
They will come weeping,
and they will seek the Lord their God.
5 They will ask the way to Zion and turn toward it,
saying, “Come, join yourselves to the Lord
    in an everlasting covenant that will not be forgotten.”
6 My people have been lost sheep.
Their shepherds have led them astray.
They have turned them aside on the mountains.
They have gone from mountain to hill.
They have forgotten their resting place.
7 All who found them have devoured them.
Their enemies said, “We are not guilty,
because they sinned against the Lord,
who is their rightful pasture,
the Lord, the hope of their fathers.”

8 Flee from Babylon!
Leave the land of the Chaldeans.
Be like the male goats that lead the flock.
9 Watch, I will stir up and bring against Babylon
    an assembly of great nations from the land of the north.
They will array themselves against her,
and she will be taken away captive from there.
Their arrows will be like those of a skilled warrior
    who does not return empty-handed.
10 Chaldea will be plundered.
All who prey on her will have their fill, declares the Lord.

11 Because you are glad and rejoice,
you who plunder my inheritance,
because you leap like a heifer that treads out the grain,
and you neigh like strong horses,
12 your mother will be completely put to shame.
She who gave birth to you will be humiliated.
Watch, she will become the least of the nations,
a wilderness, a desert, a wasteland.
13 Because of the Lord’s wrath she will not be inhabited.
She will be completely desolate.
Everyone who passes by Babylon will be astonished.
Everyone will mock her because of all her wounds.
14 Line up for battle against Babylon and surround her.
All you who bend the bow, shoot at her.
Don’t save any arrows,
because she has sinned against the Lord.
15 Shout against her from all sides.
She surrenders!
Her fortifications[a] have fallen.
Her walls have been thrown down.
This is the vengeance of the Lord.
Take vengeance on her!
Do to her as she has done to others!
16 Cut off the sower from Babylon,
and the one who swings the sickle at harvest time.
They will each return to their own people.
They will each flee to their own land
    because they fear the sword of the oppressor.

17 Israel is a scattered flock of sheep that lions have chased away.
First, the king of Assyria devoured him.
Now, the last to crush his bones was Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.
18 Therefore this is what the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says:
I will certainly punish the king of Babylon and his land,
as I punished the king of Assyria.
19 I will restore Israel to his pasture.
He will feed on Carmel and in Bashan.
His soul will be satisfied on the hills of Ephraim and Gilead.
20 In those days and at that time, declares the Lord,
the guilt of Israel will be sought,
but there will be none.
The sins of Judah will be sought,
but they will not be found,
for I will forgive the survivors whom I spare.

21 Go up against the land of Merathaim
and against those who live in Pekod.
Kill them and destroy them, declares the Lord.
Do everything I have commanded you.
22 The noise of battle is in the land,
the noise of great destruction.
23 How the hammer of the whole earth
    is smashed and broken to pieces!
How Babylon has become a horror among the nations!
24 I set a trap for you, Babylon,
and you were caught before you knew it.
You were found and captured,
because you fought against the Lord.
25 The Lord has opened his arsenal
and brought out his weapons of wrath,
for the Lord God of Armies has work to do
    in the land of the Chaldeans.
26 Come against her from far away.
Open up her granaries,
and pile her up like heaps of grain.
Destroy her completely.
Let nothing be left.
27 Kill all her young bulls.[b]
Let them go down to the slaughter.
Woe to them, for their day has come,
the time for their punishment.
28 Listen to the fugitives and refugees from Babylon!
They proclaim in Zion the vengeance of the Lord our God,
vengeance for what was done to his temple.

29 Call the archers to Babylon,
all those who bend the bow.
Set up camp all around her.
Don’t let her escape.
Pay her back for her deeds.
Do to her what she has done,
because she has defied the Lord,
the Holy One of Israel.
30 Therefore her young men will fall in the streets.
All her soldiers will be silenced in that day, declares the Lord.
31 Look, I am against you, you proud one, declares the Lord God of Armies.
Your day has come,
the time for your punishment.
32 The proud king[c] will stumble and fall,
and no one will help him up.
In his cities I will start a fire
    that will consume everyone around him.

33 This is what the Lord of Armies says.
The children of Israel and the children of Judah are oppressed.
All their captors hold them fast.
They refuse to let them go.
34 But their Redeemer is strong.
The Lord of Armies is his name.
He himself will take up their cause
    so that he may bring rest to the earth,
    and unrest to those who live in Babylon.

35 A sword against the Chaldeans, declares the Lord,
and against those who live in Babylon,
against her officials and her wise men!
36 A sword against her empty boasters!
They will become fools.
A sword against her strong warriors!
They will be filled with terror.
37 A sword against their horses and chariots!
All the foreigners in her ranks will become as weak as women.
A sword against her treasures!
They will be looted.
38 A sword against her waters!
They will be dried up,
because it is a land of idols,
and they are driven mad by those dreadful images.
39 That is why desert animals and hyenas[d] will live there,
and shrieking ostriches will dwell there.
It will never again be inhabited.
It will never be lived in from generation to generation.
40 Just as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah
and their neighboring cities, declares the Lord,
no one will dwell there.
No one will live there even as a temporary resident.

41 Look! A people comes from the north!
A great nation and many kings are being stirred up
    from the ends of the earth.
42 They take up bow and spear.
They are cruel and merciless.
Their roar sounds like the sea.
They ride on horses,
arrayed in battle formation against you, daughter of Babylon.
43 The king of Babylon has heard the report about them,
and his hands hang limp.
Anguish grips him,
pains like a woman in labor.
44 Watch this!
Like a lion coming out of the thickets of the Jordan
    into the pastures that are always green,
I will suddenly chase Babylon away from its land,
and I will appoint whomever I choose over it.
For who is like me?
Who can challenge me?
    What shepherd can stand before me?

45 Therefore hear what the Lord has planned for Babylon,
and what he intends to do against the land of the Chaldeans:
Even the little ones of the flock will be dragged away.
He will make their pasture desolate because of them.
46 The earth will tremble at the noise of Babylon’s fall.
Their cry will be heard among the nations.
