Jeremiah 49:23-27

International Standard Version

“Hamath and Arpad will be humiliated.
    Their courage melts because they have heard bad news.
        There is anxiety like^[a] the sea that cannot be calmed.
²⁴ Damascus will become weak.
    She will turn to flee, but panic will seize her.
Distress and anguish will take hold of her
    like that of^[b] a woman giving birth.
²⁵ Why^[c] is the famous city,^[d] the joyful town,
    not abandoned?
²⁶ Therefore her young men will fall in her streets,
    and all her soldiers will be silenced on that day,”
        declares the Lord of the Heavenly Armies.
²⁷ “I’ll kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus,
    and it will devour the strongholds of Ben-hadad.”
