Judgment on the Philistines

47 The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet (A)concerning the Philistines, before Pharaoh struck down (B)Gaza.

“Thus says the Lord:
(C)Behold, waters are rising (D)out of the north,
    (E)and shall become an overflowing torrent;
they shall overflow (F)the land and all that fills it,
    the city and those who dwell in it.
Men shall cry out,
    and every inhabitant of the land shall wail.
At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his stallions,
    (G)at the rushing of his chariots, at the rumbling of their wheels,
the fathers (H)look not back to their children,
    so feeble are their hands,
because of the day that is coming to destroy
    all (I)the Philistines,
to cut off from (J)Tyre and Sidon
    every helper that remains.
For the Lord is destroying the Philistines,
    (K)the remnant of the coastland of (L)Caphtor.
(M)Baldness has come upon Gaza;
    (N)Ashkelon has perished.
O remnant of their valley,
    (O)how long will you gash yourselves?
(P)Ah, sword of the Lord!
    How long till you are quiet?
Put yourself into your scabbard;
    rest and be still!
How can it[a] be quiet
    (Q)when the Lord has given it a charge?
Against (R)Ashkelon and against the seashore
    (S)he has appointed it.”

Judgment on Moab

48 (T)Concerning Moab.

Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel:

“Woe to (U)Nebo, for it is laid waste!
    (V)Kiriathaim is put to shame, it is taken;
the fortress is put to shame (W)and broken down;
    the renown of Moab is no more.
In (X)Heshbon they planned disaster against her:
    ‘Come, let us cut her off (Y)from being a nation!’
You also, O (Z)Madmen, shall be brought to silence;
    the sword shall pursue you.

“A voice! A cry from (AA)Horonaim,
    ‘Desolation and great destruction!’
Moab is destroyed;
    her little ones have made a cry.
(AB)For at the ascent of Luhith
    they go up weeping;[b]
for (AC)at the descent of Horonaim
    they have heard the distressed cry[c] of destruction.
Flee! Save yourselves!
    You will be like (AD)a juniper in the desert!
For, (AE)because you trusted in your works and your treasures,
    you also shall be taken;
and (AF)Chemosh (AG)shall go into exile
    with (AH)his priests and his officials.
(AI)The destroyer shall come upon every city,
    and no city shall escape;
the valley shall perish,
    and (AJ)the plain shall be destroyed,
    as the Lord has spoken.

“Give wings to Moab,
    for she would fly away;
her cities shall become a desolation,
    with no inhabitant in them.

10 (AK)“Cursed is he who does (AL)the work of the Lord with slackness, and cursed is he who keeps back his sword from bloodshed.

11 “Moab has been at ease from his youth
    and has (AM)settled on his dregs;
he has not been emptied from vessel to vessel,
    nor has he gone into exile;
so his taste remains in him,
    and his scent is not changed.

12 “Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I shall send to him pourers who will pour him, and empty his vessels and break his[d] jars in pieces. 13 Then (AN)Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as (AO)the house of Israel was ashamed of (AP)Bethel, their confidence.

14 “How do you say, ‘We are heroes
    and mighty men of war’?
15 The destroyer of (AQ)Moab and his cities has come up,
    and the choicest of his young men have (AR)gone down to slaughter,
    declares (AS)the King, (AT)whose name is the Lord of hosts.
16 The calamity of Moab is near at hand,
    and his affliction hastens swiftly.
17 (AU)Grieve for him, all you who are around him,
    and all who know his name;
say, (AV)‘How the mighty scepter is broken,
    the glorious staff.’

18 (AW)“Come down from your glory,
    and sit on the parched ground,
    O inhabitant of (AX)Dibon!
For the destroyer of Moab has come up against you;
    he has destroyed your strongholds.
19 (AY)Stand by the way (AZ)and watch,
    O inhabitant of (BA)Aroer!
Ask him who flees and her who escapes;
    say, ‘What has happened?’
20 Moab is put to shame, for it is broken;
    (BB)wail and cry!
Tell it beside (BC)the Arnon,
    that (BD)Moab is laid waste.

21 “Judgment has come upon (BE)the tableland, upon Holon, and (BF)Jahzah, and Mephaath, 22 and (BG)Dibon, and (BH)Nebo, and Beth-diblathaim, 23 and (BI)Kiriathaim, and Beth-gamul, and (BJ)Beth-meon, 24 and (BK)Kerioth, and (BL)Bozrah, and all the cities of the land of Moab, far and near. 25 (BM)The horn of Moab is cut off, and (BN)his arm is broken, declares the Lord.

26 (BO)“Make him drunk, (BP)because he magnified himself against the Lord, so that Moab shall (BQ)wallow in his vomit, (BR)and he too shall be held in derision. 27 (BS)Was not Israel a derision to you? (BT)Was he found among thieves, that whenever you spoke of him (BU)you wagged your head?

28 (BV)“Leave the cities, and dwell in the rock,
    O inhabitants of Moab!
Be (BW)like the dove that nests
    in the sides of the mouth of a gorge.
29 (BX)We have heard of the pride of Moab—
    he is very proud—
of his loftiness, his pride, and his arrogance,
    and the haughtiness of his heart.
30 I know his insolence, declares the Lord;
    (BY)his boasts are false,
    his deeds are false.
31 (BZ)Therefore I wail for Moab;
    I cry out for all Moab;
    for the men of (CA)Kir-hareseth I mourn.
32 More than for (CB)Jazer I weep for you,
    (CC)O vine of (CD)Sibmah!
(CE)Your branches passed over the sea,
    reached to the Sea of (CF)Jazer;
on your summer fruits and your grapes
    the destroyer has fallen.
33 (CG)Gladness and joy have been taken away
    from the fruitful land of Moab;
I have made the wine cease from the winepresses;
    no one treads them with shouts of joy;
    the shouting is not the shout of joy.

34 (CH)“From the outcry at Heshbon even to Elealeh, as far as Jahaz they utter their voice, from Zoar to (CI)Horonaim and Eglath-shelishiyah. For the waters of Nimrim also have become desolate. 35 And I will bring to an end in Moab, declares the Lord, him who offers sacrifice in (CJ)the high place and makes offerings to his god. 36 Therefore my heart moans for Moab like a flute, and my heart moans like a flute for the men of (CK)Kir-hareseth. (CL)Therefore the riches they gained have perished.

37 (CM)“For every head is shaved and every beard cut off. (CN)On all the hands are gashes, and (CO)around the waist is sackcloth. 38 On all the housetops of Moab and in the squares there is nothing but lamentation, for I have broken Moab like (CP)a vessel for which no one cares, declares the Lord. 39 How it is broken! How they wail! (CQ)How Moab has turned his back in shame! So Moab (CR)has become a derision and a horror to all that are around him.”

40 For thus says the Lord:
“Behold, (CS)one shall fly swiftly like an eagle
    (CT)and spread his wings against Moab;
41 (CU)the cities shall be taken
    and the strongholds seized.
(CV)The heart of the warriors of Moab shall be in that day
    like the heart of (CW)a woman in her birth pains;
42 Moab shall be (CX)destroyed and be no longer a people,
    because (CY)he magnified himself against the Lord.
43 (CZ)Terror, pit, and snare
    are before you, O inhabitant of Moab!
declares the Lord.
44 He who flees from the terror
    shall fall into the pit,
and he who climbs out of the pit
    shall be caught in the snare.
(DA)For I will bring these things upon Moab,
    the year of their punishment,
declares the Lord.

45 “In the shadow of Heshbon
    fugitives stop without strength,
for fire came out from Heshbon,
    flame from the house of Sihon;
it has destroyed (DB)the forehead of Moab,
    the crown of (DC)the sons of tumult.
46 (DD)Woe to you, O Moab!
    The people of (DE)Chemosh are undone,
for your sons have been taken captive,
    and your daughters into captivity.
47 (DF)Yet I will restore the fortunes of Moab
    in the latter days, declares the Lord.”
Thus far is the judgment on Moab.

Greeting

Paul, (A)Silvanus, and Timothy,

To the church of the (B)Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

(C)Grace to you and peace.

The Thessalonians' Faith and Example

(D)We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly[a] (E)mentioning you in our prayers, remembering before (F)our God and Father (G)your work of faith and labor of (H)love and (I)steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. For we know, (J)brothers[b] loved by God, (K)that he has chosen you, because (L)our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and (M)in the Holy Spirit and with full (N)conviction. You know (O)what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake. And (P)you became imitators of us (Q)and of the Lord, for (R)you received the word in much affliction, (S)with the (T)joy of the Holy Spirit, so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For not only has the word of the Lord (U)sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth (V)everywhere, so that we need not say anything. For they themselves report concerning us the kind of (W)reception we had among you, and how (X)you turned to God (Y)from idols to serve the living and (Z)true God, 10 and (AA)to wait for his Son (AB)from heaven, (AC)whom he raised from the dead, Jesus (AD)who delivers us from (AE)the wrath to come.

Daleth

25 (A)My soul clings to the dust;
    (B)give me life (C)according to your word!
26 When (D)I told of my ways, you answered me;
    (E)teach me your statutes!
27 (F)Make me understand the way of your precepts,
    and I will (G)meditate on your wondrous works.
28 (H)My soul melts away for sorrow;
    strengthen me according to your word!
29 Put false ways far from me
    and graciously (I)teach me your law!
30 I have chosen the way of faithfulness;
    I (J)set your rules before me.
31 I cling to your testimonies, O Lord;
    (K)let me not be put to shame!
32 I will run in the way of your commandments
    when you (L)enlarge my heart![a]

25 Like cold water to (A)a thirsty soul,
    so is (B)good news from a far country.
26 Like (C)a muddied spring or a polluted fountain
    is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.
27 It is (D)not good to eat much honey,
    nor is it glorious to (E)seek one's own glory.[a]
