Judgment for Idolatry
44 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Judeans who lived in the land of Egypt, at (A)Migdol, at (B)Tahpanhes, at Memphis, and in the land of (C)Pathros, 2 “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: You have seen all the disaster that I brought upon Jerusalem and upon all the cities of Judah. Behold, this day (D)they are a desolation, and no one dwells in them, 3 because of the evil that they committed, (E)provoking me to anger, (F)in that they went to make offerings (G)and serve other gods that they knew not, neither they, nor you, nor your fathers. 4 (H)Yet I persistently sent to you all my servants the prophets, saying, ‘Oh, do not do this abomination that I hate!’ 5 (I)But they did not listen (J)or incline their ear, to turn from their evil and make no offerings to other gods. 6 (K)Therefore my wrath and my anger were poured out and kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, (L)and they became a waste and a desolation, as at this day. 7 And now thus says the Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel: Why do you commit this great evil (M)against yourselves, to cut off from you (N)man and woman, (O)infant and child, from the midst of Judah, leaving you no remnant? 8 (P)Why do you provoke me to anger with the works of your hands, (Q)making offerings to other gods in the land of Egypt where you have come to live, so that you may be cut off and become (R)a curse and a taunt among all the nations of the earth? 9 Have you forgotten the evil of your fathers, (S)the evil of the kings of Judah, (T)the evil of their[a] wives, your own evil, (U)and the evil of your wives, which they committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 10 They have not humbled themselves even to this day, (V)nor have they feared, nor walked in my law and my statutes that I set before you and before your fathers.
11 “Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (W)Behold, I will set my face against you for harm, to cut off all Judah. 12 I will take the remnant of Judah who have (X)set their faces to come to the land of Egypt to live, and they shall all be consumed. (Y)In the land of Egypt they shall fall; by the sword and by famine (Z)they shall be consumed. (AA)From the least to the greatest, they shall die by the sword and by famine, (AB)and they shall become an oath, a horror, (AC)a curse, and a taunt. 13 (AD)I will punish those who dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, with the sword, with famine, and with pestilence, 14 (AE)so that none of the remnant of Judah who have come to live in the land of Egypt shall escape or survive (AF)or return to the land of Judah, to which they desire to return to dwell there. For they shall not return, (AG)except some fugitives.”
15 Then all the men who knew that (AH)their wives had made offerings to other gods, and all the women who stood by, a great assembly, all the people who lived in (AI)Pathros in the land of Egypt, answered Jeremiah: 16 “As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord, (AJ)we will not listen to you. 17 (AK)But we will do everything that we have vowed, make offerings to (AL)the queen of heaven (AM)and pour out drink offerings to her, (AN)as we did, both we and our fathers, our kings and our officials, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we had plenty of food, and prospered, and saw no disaster. 18 But since we left off making offerings to (AO)the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything (AP)and have been consumed by the sword and by famine.” 19 And the women said,[b] “When we made offerings to the queen of heaven (AQ)and poured out drink offerings to her, was it (AR)without our husbands' approval that we made cakes for her bearing her image and poured out drink offerings to her?”
20 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, (AS)men and women, all the people who had given him this answer: 21 (AT)“As for the offerings that you offered in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, you and your fathers, your kings and your officials, and the people of the land, (AU)did not the Lord remember them? Did it not come into his mind? 22 (AV)The Lord could no longer bear your evil deeds and (AW)the abominations that you committed. (AX)Therefore your land has become (AY)a desolation and a waste and a curse, (AZ)without inhabitant, as it is this day. 23 It is because you made offerings (BA)and because you sinned against the Lord and did not obey the voice of the Lord or walk in his law and in his statutes and in his testimonies (BB)that this disaster has happened to you, as at this day.”
24 Jeremiah said to all the people and all the women, “Hear the word of the Lord, (BC)all you of Judah who are in the land of Egypt. 25 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (BD)You and your wives have declared with your mouths, and have fulfilled it with your hands, saying, ‘We will surely perform our vows that we have made, (BE)to make offerings to the queen of heaven and to pour out drink offerings to her.’ Then confirm your vows and perform your vows! 26 Therefore hear the word of the Lord, (BF)all you of Judah who dwell in the land of Egypt: (BG)Behold, I have sworn by my great name, says the Lord, (BH)that my name shall no more be invoked by the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, (BI)saying, ‘As the Lord God lives.’ 27 (BJ)Behold, I am watching over them for disaster and not for good. (BK)All the men of Judah who are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by famine, until there is an end of them. 28 (BL)And those who escape the sword shall return from the land of Egypt to the land of Judah, (BM)few in number; and all the remnant of Judah, who came to the land of Egypt to live, (BN)shall know whose word will stand, mine or theirs. 29 This shall be the sign to you, declares the Lord, that I will punish you in this place, in order that you may know that (BO)my words will surely stand against you for harm: 30 Thus says the Lord, Behold, I will give (BP)Pharaoh Hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies (BQ)and into the hand of those who seek his life, as I gave (BR)Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, who was his enemy and sought his life.”

Disaster Because of Idolatry
44 This word came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews living in Lower Egypt(A)—in Migdol,(B) Tahpanhes(C) and Memphis(D)—and in Upper Egypt:(E) 2 “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You saw the great disaster(F) I brought on Jerusalem and on all the towns of Judah.(G) Today they lie deserted and in ruins(H) 3 because of the evil(I) they have done. They aroused my anger(J) by burning incense(K) to and worshiping other gods(L) that neither they nor you nor your ancestors(M) ever knew. 4 Again and again(N) I sent my servants the prophets,(O) who said, ‘Do not do this detestable(P) thing that I hate!’ 5 But they did not listen or pay attention;(Q) they did not turn from their wickedness(R) or stop burning incense(S) to other gods.(T) 6 Therefore, my fierce anger was poured out;(U) it raged against the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem and made them the desolate ruins(V) they are today.
7 “Now this is what the Lord God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Why bring such great disaster(W) on yourselves by cutting off from Judah the men and women,(X) the children and infants, and so leave yourselves without a remnant?(Y) 8 Why arouse my anger with what your hands have made,(Z) burning incense(AA) to other gods in Egypt,(AB) where you have come to live?(AC) You will destroy yourselves and make yourselves a curse[a] and an object of reproach(AD) among all the nations on earth. 9 Have you forgotten the wickedness committed by your ancestors(AE) and by the kings(AF) and queens(AG) of Judah and the wickedness committed by you and your wives(AH) in the land of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem?(AI) 10 To this day they have not humbled(AJ) themselves or shown reverence,(AK) nor have they followed my law(AL) and the decrees(AM) I set before you and your ancestors.(AN)
11 “Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty,(AO) the God of Israel, says: I am determined to bring disaster(AP) on you and to destroy all Judah. 12 I will take away the remnant(AQ) of Judah who were determined to go to Egypt to settle there. They will all perish in Egypt; they will fall by the sword or die from famine. From the least to the greatest,(AR) they will die by sword or famine.(AS) They will become a curse and an object of horror, a curse and an object of reproach.(AT) 13 I will punish(AU) those who live in Egypt with the sword,(AV) famine and plague,(AW) as I punished Jerusalem. 14 None of the remnant of Judah who have gone to live in Egypt will escape or survive to return to the land of Judah, to which they long to return and live; none will return except a few fugitives.”(AX)
15 Then all the men who knew that their wives(AY) were burning incense(AZ) to other gods, along with all the women(BA) who were present—a large assembly—and all the people living in Lower and Upper Egypt,(BB) said to Jeremiah, 16 “We will not listen(BC) to the message you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord!(BD) 17 We will certainly do everything we said we would:(BE) We will burn incense(BF) to the Queen of Heaven(BG) and will pour out drink offerings to her just as we and our ancestors, our kings and our officials(BH) did in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem.(BI) At that time we had plenty of food(BJ) and were well off and suffered no harm.(BK) 18 But ever since we stopped burning incense to the Queen of Heaven and pouring out drink offerings(BL) to her, we have had nothing and have been perishing by sword and famine.(BM)”
19 The women added, “When we burned incense(BN) to the Queen of Heaven(BO) and poured out drink offerings to her, did not our husbands(BP) know that we were making cakes(BQ) impressed with her image(BR) and pouring out drink offerings to her?”
20 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, both men and women, who were answering him, 21 “Did not the Lord remember(BS) and call to mind the incense(BT) burned in the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem(BU) by you and your ancestors,(BV) your kings and your officials and the people of the land?(BW) 22 When the Lord could no longer endure(BX) your wicked actions and the detestable things you did, your land became a curse(BY) and a desolate waste(BZ) without inhabitants, as it is today.(CA) 23 Because you have burned incense and have sinned against the Lord and have not obeyed him or followed(CB) his law or his decrees(CC) or his stipulations, this disaster(CD) has come upon you, as you now see.”(CE)
24 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, including the women,(CF) “Hear the word of the Lord, all you people of Judah in Egypt.(CG) 25 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You and your wives(CH) have done what you said you would do when you promised, ‘We will certainly carry out the vows we made to burn incense and pour out drink offerings to the Queen of Heaven.’(CI)
“Go ahead then, do what you promised! Keep your vows!(CJ) 26 But hear the word of the Lord, all you Jews living in Egypt:(CK) ‘I swear(CL) by my great name,’ says the Lord, ‘that no one from Judah living anywhere in Egypt will ever again invoke my name or swear, “As surely as the Sovereign(CM) Lord lives.”(CN) 27 For I am watching(CO) over them for harm,(CP) not for good; the Jews in Egypt will perish(CQ) by sword and famine(CR) until they are all destroyed.(CS) 28 Those who escape the sword(CT) and return to the land of Judah from Egypt will be very few.(CU) Then the whole remnant(CV) of Judah who came to live in Egypt will know whose word will stand(CW)—mine or theirs.(CX)
29 “‘This will be the sign(CY) to you that I will punish(CZ) you in this place,’ declares the Lord, ‘so that you will know that my threats of harm against you will surely stand.’(DA) 30 This is what the Lord says: ‘I am going to deliver Pharaoh(DB) Hophra king of Egypt into the hands of his enemies who want to kill him, just as I gave Zedekiah(DC) king of Judah into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the enemy who wanted to kill him.’”(DD)

44 Jeremias recebeu a mensagem do SENHOR para todos os judeus que moravam no Egito, ou seja os que moravam em Migdol, Tafnes, Mênfis e na região do sul. Jeremias disse a eles a seguinte mensagem 2 do SENHOR Todo-Poderoso, Deus de Israel:
—Vocês viram todo o sofrimento que trouxe contra Jerusalém e todas as cidades de Judá. Hoje estão em ruínas e ninguém mora ali. 3 Tudo isso aconteceu por causa da maldade que cometeram, pois provocaram a minha ira adorando e queimando incenso a outros deuses que nem eles, nem vocês nem os seus antepassados conheceram. 4 Vez após vez enviei a eles os meus servos, os profetas, com a advertência que não cometessem essas abominações que eu detesto. 5 Mas não me ouviram nem deram atenção, senão que continuaram oferecendo incenso a outros deuses. 6 Portanto, eu mostrei a minha ira contra eles. Eu castiguei as cidades de Judá e as ruas de Jerusalém. A minha fúria fez com que elas ficassem em ruínas e vazias até hoje.
7 —Agora eu, o SENHOR, Deus Todo-Poderoso, o Deus de Israel, pergunto: por que se causam vocês mesmos um mal tão grande? Por que provocam a morte do povo de Judá, homens, mulheres e crianças, e até de recém-nascidos, até não restar ninguém? 8 Por que provocam a minha ira com as suas ações e oferecem incenso a outros deuses na terra do Egito, onde vieram morar? Tudo o que vão conseguir é a sua própria destruição. As outras nações os verão como exemplo do que é ser amaldiçoado e humilhado. 9 Pois já esqueceram todas as maldades que cometeram os seus antepassados e os reis de Judá e as suas esposas, e as maldades que vocês mesmos e as suas esposas cometeram nas ruas de Judá? 10 Até o dia de hoje vocês não se humilharam, não tiveram temor nem viveram de acordo com as leis e estatutos que dei a vocês e aos seus antepassados.
11 —Portanto, eu, o SENHOR Todo-Poderoso, Deus de Israel afirmo que enfrentarei vocês e acabarei com todo o povo de Judá. 12 Farei com que os sobreviventes de Judá que teimosamente decidiram partir e morar no Egito morram ali. Todos morrerão, desde o mais humilde até o mais importante. Todos eles morrerão na batalha ou a fome acabará com eles. Eles serão vistos como um exemplo de maldição, de aniquilação, de espanto e de humilhação, 13 pois castigarei aos que vivem no Egito como castiguei a Jerusalém: com guerra, fome e doenças. 14 Nem um só desses poucos que ficaram de Judá e que foram viver no Egito, voltará para Judá. E embora desejem voltar a Judá para viver lá, não voltarão. Só alguns refugiados voltarão para lá.
15 Então os homens que sabiam que as suas esposas ofereciam incenso a outros deuses, assim como as mulheres que estavam presentes, os quais formavam um grupo grande, mais todo o povo que morava no Egito, responderam a Jeremias:
16 —Não vamos dar atenção à mensagem que você nos deu da parte do SENHOR. 17 Pelo contrário, nós continuaremos fazendo tudo o que dissemos que faríamos. Continuaremos oferecendo incenso e ofertas de vinho à Rainha do Céu[a], como nós sempre fizemos e como também nossos antepassados, nossos reis e chefes fizeram nas cidades de Judá e nas ruas de Jerusalém. Então tínhamos comida em abundância, nos ia bem e não tínhamos nenhum sofrimento. 18 Mas desde que deixamos de oferecer incenso e ofertas de vinho à Rainha do Céu, nos tem faltado tudo e a guerra e a fome estão nos matando.
19 E as mulheres acrescentaram[b]:
—Quando oferecíamos holocaustos e bebidas à Rainha do Céu, por acaso não sabiam os nossos esposos que fazíamos bolos com a sua imagem e ofertas de vinho?
20 Então Jeremias respondeu a todo o povo, isto é, a todos os homens e mulheres:
21 —Vocês acreditam que o SENHOR não se lembrava ou não percebia que vocês, os seus antepassados, os seus reis, os seus chefes e o povo ofereciam incenso nas cidades de Judá e nas ruas de Jerusalém? 22 O SENHOR já não podia resistir mais as suas más ações e as imundices que vocês faziam. Isso foi o que causou que seu país se transformasse em exemplo de maldição, num lugar em ruínas e sem habitantes, assim como está hoje. 23 A tragédia que vocês sofreram foi causada exatamente porque vocês queimaram incenso a outros deuses e pecaram contra o SENHOR, por não darem ouvidos ao SENHOR nem terem obedecido às suas leis, nem às suas ordenanças nem aos seus mandamentos.
24 Então Jeremias disse ao povo e às mulheres:
—Povo de Judá que habita na terra do Egito, ouça a mensagem do SENHOR. 25 Isto diz o SENHOR Todo-Poderoso, o Deus de Israel: “Vocês e as suas esposas disseram que certamente cumpririam a promessa de oferecer incenso e ofertas de vinho à Rainha do Céu. Bom, com os seus feitos mostram que cumprem o que prometem, vão pois e cumpram as suas promessas. 26 Ouça povo de Judá que vive no Egito! Eu, o SENHOR, jurei por meu grande nome, que ninguém do povo de Judá que vive no Egito voltará a pronunciar o meu nome dizendo: ‘Jure pelo Senhor DEUS’. 27 Eu estarei velando para trazer sobre vocês sofrimento em vez de prosperidade. Todo o povo de Judá que vive no Egito morrerá na batalha ou de fome, até que não fique ninguém. 28 Só uns poucos sobreviverão da guerra e voltarão à terra de Judá desde o Egito. 44 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews who dwell in the land of Egypt, who dwell at (A)Migdol, at (B)Tahpanhes, at (C)Noph,[a] and in the country of (D)Pathros, saying, 2 “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘You have seen all the calamity that I have brought on Jerusalem and on all the cities of Judah; and behold, this day they are (E)a desolation, and no one dwells in them, 3 because of their wickedness which they have committed to provoke Me to anger, in that they went (F)to burn incense and to (G)serve other gods whom they did not know, they nor you nor your fathers. 4 However (H)I have sent to you all My servants the prophets, rising early and sending them, saying, “Oh, do not do this abominable thing that I hate!” 5 But they did not listen or incline their ear to turn from their wickedness, to burn no incense to other gods. 6 So My fury and My anger were poured out and kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; and they [b]are wasted and desolate, as it is this day.’

11 “Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Behold, (N)I will set My face against you for catastrophe and for [d]cutting off all Judah. 12 And I will take the remnant of Judah who have set their faces to go into the land of Egypt to dwell there, and (O)they shall all be consumed and fall in the land of Egypt. They shall be consumed by the sword and by famine. They shall die, from the least to the greatest, by the sword and by famine; and (P)they shall be an oath, an astonishment, a curse and a reproach! 13 (Q)For I will punish those who dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence, 14 so that none of the remnant of Judah who have gone into the land of Egypt to dwell there shall escape or survive, lest they return to the land of Judah, to which they (R)desire[e] to return and dwell. For (S)none shall return except those who escape.’ ”
15 Then all the men who knew that their wives had burned incense to other gods, with all the women who stood by, a great multitude, and all the people who dwelt in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying: 16 “As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord, (T)we will not listen to you! 17 But we will certainly do (U)whatever has gone out of our own mouth, to burn incense to the (V)queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our princes, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we had plenty of [f]food, were well-off, and saw no trouble. 18 But since we stopped burning incense to the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything and have been consumed by the sword and by famine.”
19 The women also said, (W)“And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven and poured out drink offerings to her, did we make cakes for her, to worship her, and pour out drink offerings to her without our husbands’ permission?”
20 Then Jeremiah spoke to all the people—the men, the women, and all the people who had given him that answer—saying: 21 “The incense that you burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, you and your fathers, your kings and your princes, and the people of the land, did not the Lord remember them, and did it not come into His mind? 22 So the Lord could no longer bear it, because of the evil of your doings and because of the abominations which you committed. Therefore your land is a desolation, an astonishment, a curse, and without an inhabitant, (X)as it is this day. 23 Because you have burned incense and because you have sinned against the Lord, and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord or walked in His law, in His statutes or in His testimonies, (Y)therefore this calamity has happened to you, as at this day.”
24 Moreover Jeremiah said to all the people and to all the women, “Hear the word of the Lord, all Judah who are in the land of Egypt! 25 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, saying: ‘You and your wives have spoken with your mouths and fulfilled with your hands, saying, “We will surely keep our vows that we have made, to burn incense to the queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her.” You will surely keep your vows and perform your vows!’ 26 Therefore hear the word of the Lord, all Judah who dwell in the land of Egypt: ‘Behold, (Z)I have sworn by My (AA)great name,’ says the Lord, ‘that (AB)My name shall no more be named in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, “The Lord God lives.” 27 Behold, I will watch over them for adversity and not for good. And all the men of Judah who are in the land of Egypt (AC)shall be consumed by the sword and by famine, until there is an end to them. 28 Yet (AD)a small number who escape the sword shall return from the land of Egypt to the land of Judah; and all the remnant of Judah, who have gone to the land of Egypt to dwell there, shall know whose words will stand, Mine or theirs. 29 And this shall be a sign to you,’ says the Lord, ‘that I will punish you in this place, that you may know that My words will surely (AE)stand against you for adversity.’
30 “Thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, (AF)I will give Pharaoh Hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies and into the hand of those who seek his life, as I gave (AG)Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, his enemy who sought his life.’ ”
