The People Go to Egypt
43 I told the people everything the Lord had told me. 2 But Azariah, Johanan[a] and some other arrogant men said to me, “You're lying! The Lord didn't tell you to say that we shouldn't go to Egypt. 3 Baruch son of Neriah must have told you to say that. He wants the Babylonians to capture us, so they can take us away to Babylonia or even kill us.”
4 Johanan, the other army officers, and everyone else refused to stay in Judah in spite of the Lord's command. 5 (A) So Johanan and the officers led us away toward Egypt. The group that left Judah included those who had been scattered in other countries and who had then come back to live in Judah. 6 Baruch and I and others in the group had been staying with Gedaliah, because Nebuzaradan, the Babylonian officer in charge of the guard, had ordered him to take care of the king's daughters and quite a few men, women, and children.
7 The people disobeyed the Lord and went to Egypt. The group had settled in Tahpanhes, 8 when the Lord told me:
9 Jeremiah, carry some large stones to the entrance of the government building in Tahpanhes. Bury the stones underneath the brick pavement[b] and be sure the Jews are watching.
10 Then tell them that I, the Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel, have sent for my servant, Nebuchadnezzar[c] of Babylonia. I will bring him here and have him set up his throne and his royal tent over these stones that I told you to bury. 11 He will attack Egypt and kill many of its people; others will die of disease or be dragged away as prisoners. 12-13 I will let him set Egypt's temples on fire, and he will either burn or carry off their idols. He will destroy the sacred monuments at the temple of the sun-god.[d] Then Nebuchadnezzar will pick the land clean, just like a shepherd picking the lice off his clothes. And he will return safely home.

Jeremiah Taken to Egypt
43 When Jeremiah finished speaking to all the people all these words of the Lord their God, with which the Lord their God had sent him to them, 2 Azariah the son of (A)Hoshaiah and (B)Johanan the son of Kareah and (C)all the insolent men said to Jeremiah, “You are telling a lie. The Lord our God did not send you to say, (D)‘Do not go to Egypt to live there,’ 3 but (E)Baruch the son of Neriah (F)has set you against us, (G)to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they may kill us or take us into exile in Babylon.” 4 So (H)Johanan the son of Kareah and all (I)the commanders of the forces and all the people did not obey the voice of the Lord, to remain in the land of Judah. 5 But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces took (J)all the remnant of Judah who had returned to live in the land of Judah from all the nations to which they had been driven— 6 (K)the men, the women, the children, (L)the princesses, and every person whom (M)Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with (N)Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan; also Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch the son of Neriah. 7 And they came into the land of Egypt, for they did not obey the voice of the Lord. And they arrived at (O)Tahpanhes.
8 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah in (P)Tahpanhes: 9 “Take in your hands large stones and hide them in the mortar in the pavement that is at the entrance to Pharaoh's palace in (Q)Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah, 10 and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, (R)my servant, (S)and I will set his throne above these stones that I have hidden, and he will spread his royal canopy over them. 11 He shall come (T)and strike the land of Egypt, (U)giving over to the pestilence those who are doomed to the pestilence, to captivity those who are doomed to captivity, and to the sword those who are doomed to the sword. 12 (V)I shall kindle a fire (W)in the temples of the gods of Egypt, and he shall burn them (X)and carry them away captive. (Y)And he shall clean the land of Egypt (Z)as a shepherd cleans his cloak of vermin, and he shall go away from there in peace. 13 He shall break the (AA)obelisks of Heliopolis, which is in the land of Egypt, (AB)and the temples of the gods of Egypt he shall burn with fire.’”

43 Então Jeremias acabou de dizer ao povo a mensagem do SENHOR, Deus deles. Ele lhes falou tudo o que o SENHOR, Deus deles, mandou dizer. 2 Azarias, filho de Hosaías; Joanã, filho de Careá; e outros indivíduos arrogantes disseram a Jeremias:
—Você está mentindo! O SENHOR, nosso Deus, não o enviou dizer que nós não devemos ir viver no Egito. 3 É esse Baruque, filho de Nerias, quem o instiga contra nós para nos entregar nas mãos dos babilônios. Ele quer que eles nos matem e nos deportem para a Babilônia.
4 Então nem Joanã, filho de Careá, nem os oficiais do exército, nem ninguém do povo obedeceu ao SENHOR, que disse que permanecessem na terra de Judá. 5 Em vez disso, Joanã, filho de Careá, e os oficiais do exército levaram os que restavam do povo para morar no Egito. 9 —Pegue nas suas mãos algumas pedras grandes. Leve-as e enterre-as com cimento no andar ladrilhado em frente da entrada do palácio do faraó em Tafnes. Faça isso enquanto os judeus estão olhando para você. 10 Então diga a eles que eu, o SENHOR Todo-Poderoso, Deus de Israel mandarei chamar o meu servo Nabucodonosor, rei da Babilônia. Sobre estas pedras que escondi aqui colocarei o seu trono, e ele estenderá a sua tenda real sobre elas. 11 Ele virá para o Egito e o atacará. Quem estiver destinado para morrer, morrerá.
