42 Alla arméofficerarna, bland dem Jochanan, Kareachs son, och Jesanja, Hoshajas son,[a] och allt folket, både stora och små, kom 2 och sa till profeten Jeremia: ”Vi vädjar till dig: Be till Herren, din Gud, för oss som är kvar. Som du själv kan se, är vi bara en liten spillra kvar av de många som vi varit. 3 Be Herren, din Gud, att tala om för oss vart vi ska ta vägen och vad vi ska göra.”
4 ”Ja”, svarade profeten Jeremia dem. ”Jag har lyssnat till er och ska be till Herren, er Gud, så som ni har begärt. Allt vad Herren sedan svarar ska jag tala om för er, utan att dölja någonting.”
5 Då sa de till Jeremia: ”Må Herren vara ett sant och trofast vittne mot oss, om vi inte handlar i enlighet med allt vad Herren, vår Gud, sänder dig till att säga oss. 6 Vare sig det är gott eller ont, ska vi lyda Herren, vår Gud, som vi sänder dig till, för att det ska gå oss väl när vi lyder Herren, vår Gud.”
7 Tio dagar senare kom Herrens ord till Jeremia. 8 Då kallade han till sig Jochanan, Kareachs son, de andra arméofficerarna som var hos honom och även allt folket, både små och stora, 9 och sa till dem: ”Så säger Herren, Israels Gud, som ni sände mig till för att lägga fram er vädjan: 10 ’Om ni stannar kvar i detta land ska jag bygga upp er och inte riva ner er. Jag ska plantera er och inte rycka upp er. Jag ångrar nämligen det onda jag låtit drabba er. 11 Var inte rädda för kungen av Babylonien. Var inte rädda för honom, säger Herren, för jag är med er för att rädda er och befria er ur hans våld. 12 Jag ska vara barmhärtig mot er, och han kommer också att vara barmhärtig mot er, så att han låter er åter bo i ert land.’
13 Men kanske säger ni: ’Vi vill inte stanna i detta land’ och lyder inte Herren, er Gud, 14 utan säger: ’Nej, vi vill gå till Egypten, där vi slipper se krig, höra hornsignaler och hungra efter bröd, där vill vi bo.’ 15 Hör därför Herrens ord, ni som är kvar av Juda: ’Så säger härskarornas Herre, Israels Gud: Om ni bestämmer er för att gå till Egypten och bosätta er där, 16 ska det svärd som ni är rädda för nå er i Egypten och den hungersnöd som ni ängslas för följa efter er till Egypten, och där ska ni dö. 17 Alla de som bestämmer sig för att gå till Egypten och bosätta sig där ska dö genom svärd, hungersnöd och pest. Ingen av dem ska överleva eller komma undan det onda som jag låter drabba dem.’
18 För så säger härskarornas Herre, Israels Gud: ’På samma sätt som min vrede och mitt raseri uttömdes över Jerusalems invånare, så ska mitt raseri tömmas ut över er om ni går till Egypten. Ni ska bli till förbannelse och förskräckelse, fördömelse och förakt, och aldrig mer återse denna plats.’
19 Herren har talat till er, ni som finns kvar i Juda: ’Gå inte till Egypten!’ Besinna att jag har varnat er i dag. 20 Ni gjorde ett misstag när ni sände mig till Herren, er Gud, och uppmanade mig att be för er och sa: ’Be till Herren, vår Gud för oss, och tala om för oss allt han säger, så ska vi göra så.’ 21 I dag har jag talat om det för er, men ni har inte velat lyssna till Herren, er Gud, och till allt det han har sänt mig att tala till er. 22 Därför ska ni med säkerhet veta att ni kommer att dö genom svärd, hungersnöd och pest på den plats, där ni så gärna vill bosätta er.”

42 Todos los oficiales militares y todo el pueblo, desde el menor hasta el mayor, junto con Johanán hijo de Careaj, Jezanías hijo de Osaías, fueron 2 y le dijeron al profeta Jeremías:
«Acepta ahora nuestra súplica, y ruega al Señor tu Dios por nosotros, por todo este remanente. Como puedes ver, éramos muchos y sólo hemos quedado unos pocos. 3 Pide al Señor tu Dios que nos muestre el camino que debemos seguir, y qué es lo que debemos hacer.»
4 El profeta Jeremías les dijo:
«Los he escuchado y, tal y como me lo han pedido, voy a orar al Señor su Dios. Todo lo que el Señor les responda, yo se lo diré a ustedes. No les ocultaré una sola palabra.»
5 Ellos le dijeron a Jeremías:
«Que el Señor sea testigo fiel y verdadero entre nosotros, si acaso no cumplimos con todo lo que, por tu conducto, el Señor tu Dios nos mande hacer. 6 Nosotros obedeceremos a la voz del Señor nuestro Dios, a quien te hemos pedido suplicarle. Sea bueno o sea malo, obedeceremos a la voz del Señor nuestro Dios, para que nos vaya bien.»
7 Diez días después, sucedió que la palabra del Señor vino a Jeremías. 8 Entonces llamó a Johanán hijo de Careaj y a todos los oficiales militares que estaban con él, lo mismo que a todo el pueblo, desde el menor hasta el mayor, 9 y les dijo:
«Así ha dicho el Señor y Dios de Israel, ante quien me pidieron presentar sus ruegos. 10 Si ustedes deciden quedarse en esta tierra, él los levantará y no volverá a destruirlos; los plantará, y no volverá a arrancarlos. El Señor lamenta mucho haberles causado tanto daño. 11 Ustedes tienen miedo de la presencia del rey de Babilonia, pero no hay razón de que le teman, porque el Señor está con ustedes para salvarlos y librarlos de sus manos.
—Palabra del Señor.
12 »El Señor tendrá compasión de ustedes, y hará que también el rey de Babilonia se compadezca de ustedes, para que puedan volver a su tierra. 13 Pero si ustedes deciden no habitar este país, y por lo tanto no obedecer a la voz del Señor su Dios, 14 sino que deciden emigrar a Egipto y quedarse a vivir allá, donde creen que no sabrán nada de guerras, ni oirán sonido de trompetas, ni padecerán hambre, 15 escuchen ustedes, remanente de Judá, la palabra del Señor. Así ha dicho el Señor de los ejércitos y Dios de Israel: “Si ustedes deciden emigrar a Egipto, y se internan para vivir allá, 16 va a suceder que la espada que tanto temen los alcanzará allá, en la tierra de Egipto, y el hambre que tanto temen, también los alcanzará allá, en Egipto, y allí morirán. 17 Todos los que decidan emigrar a Egipto y quedarse a vivir allá, morirán por causa de la espada, el hambre y la peste; ni uno solo de ellos quedará con vida, ni podrá escapar del mal que traeré sobre ellos.”
18 »Porque así ha dicho el Señor de los ejércitos y Dios de Israel: “Así como mi enojo y mi ira se derramaron sobre los habitantes de Jerusalén, así también se derramará mi ira sobre ustedes, cuando entren en Egipto. Serán motivo de imprecaciones y de espanto, de maldiciones y de afrentas, y no volverán a ver este lugar.”
19 »El Señor ha hablado acerca de ustedes, remanente de Judá. No vayan a Egipto. Queden advertidos de lo que hoy les digo. 20 Ustedes están poniendo en peligro su vida, pues ustedes mismos me enviaron a suplicarle al Señor su Dios, a rogarle que les diera a conocer lo que él quiere que hagan, y se comprometieron a obedecerlo. 21 En este día les he dado a conocer su palabra, y ustedes no han obedecido a la voz del Señor su Dios, ni a nada de lo que él me envió a decirles. 22 Sepan, pues, que allí donde ustedes decidieron emigrar para vivir, allí morirán por la espada, el hambre y la peste.»

42 Then all the captains of the forces, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least even unto the greatest, came near,
2 And said unto Jeremiah the prophet, Let, we beseech thee, our supplication be accepted before thee, and pray for us unto the Lord thy God, even for all this remnant; (for we are left but a few of many, as thine eyes do behold us:)
3 That the Lord thy God may shew us the way wherein we may walk, and the thing that we may do.
4 Then Jeremiah the prophet said unto them, I have heard you; behold, I will pray unto the Lord your God according to your words; and it shall come to pass, that whatsoever thing the Lord shall answer you, I will declare it unto you; I will keep nothing back from you.
5 Then they said to Jeremiah, The Lord be a true and faithful witness between us, if we do not even according to all things for the which the Lord thy God shall send thee to us.
6 Whether it be good, or whether it be evil, we will obey the voice of the Lord our God, to whom we send thee; that it may be well with us, when we obey the voice of the Lord our God.
7 And it came to pass after ten days, that the word of the Lord came unto Jeremiah.
8 Then called he Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces which were with him, and all the people from the least even to the greatest,
9 And said unto them, Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel, unto whom ye sent me to present your supplication before him;
10 If ye will still abide in this land, then will I build you, and not pull you down, and I will plant you, and not pluck you up: for I repent me of the evil that I have done unto you.
11 Be not afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom ye are afraid; be not afraid of him, saith the Lord: for I am with you to save you, and to deliver you from his hand.
12 And I will shew mercies unto you, that he may have mercy upon you, and cause you to return to your own land.
13 But if ye say, We will not dwell in this land, neither obey the voice of the Lord your God,
14 Saying, No; but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the trumpet, nor have hunger of bread; and there will we dwell:
15 And now therefore hear the word of the Lord, ye remnant of Judah; Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; If ye wholly set your faces to enter into Egypt, and go to sojourn there;
16 Then it shall come to pass, that the sword, which ye feared, shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine, whereof ye were afraid, shall follow close after you there in Egypt; and there ye shall die.
17 So shall it be with all the men that set their faces to go into Egypt to sojourn there; they shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: and none of them shall remain or escape from the evil that I will bring upon them.
18 For thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; As mine anger and my fury hath been poured forth upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem; so shall my fury be poured forth upon you, when ye shall enter into Egypt: and ye shall be an execration, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach; and ye shall see this place no more.
19 The Lord hath said concerning you, O ye remnant of Judah; Go ye not into Egypt: know certainly that I have admonished you this day.
20 For ye dissembled in your hearts, when ye sent me unto the Lord your God, saying, Pray for us unto the Lord our God; and according unto all that the Lord our God shall say, so declare unto us, and we will do it.
21 And now I have this day declared it to you; but ye have not obeyed the voice of the Lord your God, nor any thing for the which he hath sent me unto you.
22 Now therefore know certainly that ye shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, in the place whither ye desire to go and to sojourn.
