Jeremiah Laments over Judah
4 “If you will return, O Israel,” says the Lord,
(A)“Return to Me;
And if you will put away your abominations out of My sight,
Then you shall not be moved.
2 (B)And you shall swear, ‘The Lord lives,’
(C)In truth, in [a]judgment, and in righteousness;
(D)The nations shall bless themselves in Him,
And in Him they shall (E)glory.”
3 For thus says the Lord to the men of Judah and Jerusalem:
(F)“Break up your [b]fallow ground,
And (G)do not sow among thorns.
4 (H)Circumcise yourselves to the Lord,
And take away the foreskins of your hearts,
You men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem,
Lest My fury come forth like fire,
And burn so that no one can quench it,
Because of the evil of your doings.”
An Imminent Invasion
5 Declare in Judah and proclaim in Jerusalem, and say:
(I)“Blow the trumpet in the land;
Cry, ‘Gather together,’
And say, (J)‘Assemble yourselves,
And let us go into the fortified cities.’
6 Set up the [c]standard toward Zion.
Take refuge! Do not delay!
For I will bring disaster from the (K)north,
And great destruction.”
7 (L)The lion has come up from his thicket,
And (M)the destroyer of nations is on his way.
He has gone forth from his place
(N)To make your land desolate.
Your cities will be laid waste,
Without inhabitant.
8 For this, (O)clothe yourself with sackcloth,
Lament and wail.
For the fierce anger of the Lord
Has not turned back from us.
9 “And it shall come to pass in that day,” says the Lord,
“That the heart of the king shall perish,
And the heart of the princes;
The priests shall be astonished,
And the prophets shall wonder.”
10 Then I said, “Ah, Lord God!
(P)Surely You have greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem,
(Q)Saying, ‘You shall have peace,’
Whereas the sword reaches to the [d]heart.”
11 At that time it will be said
To this people and to Jerusalem,
(R)“A dry wind of the desolate heights blows in the wilderness
Toward the daughter of My people—
Not to fan or to cleanse—
12 A wind too strong for these will come for Me;
Now (S)I will also speak judgment against them.”
13 “Behold, he shall come up like clouds,
And (T)his chariots like a whirlwind.
(U)His horses are swifter than eagles.
Woe to us, for we are plundered!”
14 O Jerusalem, (V)wash your heart from wickedness,
That you may be saved.
How long shall your evil thoughts lodge within you?
15 For a voice declares (W)from Dan
And proclaims [e]affliction from Mount Ephraim:
16 “Make mention to the nations,
Yes, proclaim against Jerusalem,
That watchers come from a (X)far country
And raise their voice against the cities of Judah.
17 (Y)Like keepers of a field they are against her all around,
Because she has been rebellious against Me,” says the Lord.
18 “Your(Z) ways and your doings
Have procured these things for you.
This is your wickedness,
Because it is bitter,
Because it reaches to your heart.”
Sorrow for the Doomed Nation
19 O my (AA)soul, my soul!
I am pained in my very heart!
My heart makes a noise in me;
I cannot hold my peace,
Because you have heard, O my soul,
The sound of the trumpet,
The alarm of war.
20 (AB)Destruction upon destruction is cried,
For the whole land is plundered.
Suddenly (AC)my tents are plundered,
And my curtains in a moment.
21 How long will I see the [f]standard,
And hear the sound of the trumpet?
22 “For My people are foolish,
They have not known Me.
They are [g]silly children,
And they have no understanding.
(AD)They are wise to do evil,
But to do good they have no knowledge.”
23 (AE)I beheld the earth, and indeed it was (AF)without form, and void;
And the heavens, they had no light.
24 (AG)I beheld the mountains, and indeed they trembled,
And all the hills moved back and forth.
25 I beheld, and indeed there was no man,
And (AH)all the birds of the heavens had fled.
26 I beheld, and indeed the fruitful land was a (AI)wilderness,
And all its cities were broken down
At the presence of the Lord,
By His fierce anger.
27 For thus says the Lord:
“The whole land shall be desolate;
(AJ)Yet I will not make a full end.
28 For this (AK)shall the earth mourn,
And (AL)the heavens above be black,
Because I have spoken.
I have (AM)purposed and (AN)will not relent,
Nor will I turn back from it.
29 The whole city shall flee from the noise of the horsemen and bowmen.
They shall go into thickets and climb up on the rocks.
Every city shall be forsaken,
And not a man shall dwell in it.
30 “And when you are plundered,
What will you do?
Though you clothe yourself with crimson,
Though you adorn yourself with ornaments of gold,
(AO)Though you enlarge your eyes with paint,
In vain you will make yourself fair;
(AP)Your lovers will despise you;
They will seek your life.
31 “For I have heard a voice as of a woman in [h]labor,
The anguish as of her who brings forth her first child,
The voice of the daughter of Zion bewailing herself;
She (AQ)spreads her hands, saying,
‘Woe is me now, for my soul is [i]weary
Because of murderers!’

declares the Lord.
“If you put your detestable idols(B) out of my sight
and no longer go astray,
2 and if in a truthful, just and righteous way
you swear,(C) ‘As surely as the Lord lives,’(D)
then the nations will invoke blessings(E) by him
and in him they will boast.(F)”
3 This is what the Lord says to the people of Judah and to Jerusalem:
“Break up your unplowed ground(G)
and do not sow among thorns.(H)
4 Circumcise yourselves to the Lord,
circumcise your hearts,(I)
you people of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem,
or my wrath(J) will flare up and burn like fire(K)
because of the evil(L) you have done—
burn with no one to quench(M) it.
Disaster From the North
5 “Announce in Judah and proclaim(N) in Jerusalem and say:
‘Sound the trumpet(O) throughout the land!’
Cry aloud and say:
‘Gather together!
Let us flee to the fortified cities!’(P)
6 Raise the signal(Q) to go to Zion!
Flee for safety without delay!
For I am bringing disaster(R) from the north,(S)
even terrible destruction.”
7 A lion(T) has come out of his lair;(U)
a destroyer(V) of nations has set out.
He has left his place
to lay waste(W) your land.
Your towns will lie in ruins(X)
without inhabitant.
8 So put on sackcloth,(Y)
lament(Z) and wail,
for the fierce anger(AA) of the Lord
has not turned away from us.
9 “In that day,” declares the Lord,
“the king and the officials will lose heart,(AB)
the priests will be horrified,
and the prophets will be appalled.”(AC)
10 Then I said, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! How completely you have deceived(AD) this people and Jerusalem by saying, ‘You will have peace,’(AE) when the sword is at our throats!”
11 At that time this people and Jerusalem will be told, “A scorching wind(AF) from the barren heights in the desert blows toward my people, but not to winnow or cleanse; 12 a wind(AG) too strong for that comes from me. Now I pronounce my judgments(AH) against them.”
13 Look! He advances like the clouds,(AI)
his chariots(AJ) come like a whirlwind,(AK)
his horses(AL) are swifter than eagles.(AM)
Woe to us! We are ruined!(AN)
14 Jerusalem, wash(AO) the evil from your heart and be saved.(AP)
How long(AQ) will you harbor wicked thoughts?
15 A voice is announcing from Dan,(AR)
proclaiming disaster from the hills of Ephraim.(AS)
16 “Tell this to the nations,
proclaim concerning Jerusalem:
‘A besieging army is coming from a distant land,(AT)
raising a war cry(AU) against the cities of Judah.(AV)
17 They surround(AW) her like men guarding a field,
because she has rebelled(AX) against me,’”
declares the Lord.
18 “Your own conduct and actions(AY)
have brought this on you.(AZ)
This is your punishment.
How bitter(BA) it is!
How it pierces to the heart!”
19 Oh, my anguish, my anguish!(BB)
I writhe in pain.(BC)
Oh, the agony of my heart!
My heart pounds(BD) within me,
I cannot keep silent.(BE)
For I have heard the sound of the trumpet;(BF)
I have heard the battle cry.(BG)
20 Disaster follows disaster;(BH)
the whole land lies in ruins.(BI)
In an instant my tents(BJ) are destroyed,
my shelter in a moment.
21 How long must I see the battle standard(BK)
and hear the sound of the trumpet?(BL)
22 “My people are fools;(BM)
they do not know me.(BN)
They are senseless children;
they have no understanding.(BO)
They are skilled in doing evil;(BP)
they know not how to do good.”(BQ)
23 I looked at the earth,
and it was formless and empty;(BR)
and at the heavens,
and their light(BS) was gone.
24 I looked at the mountains,
and they were quaking;(BT)
all the hills were swaying.
25 I looked, and there were no people;
every bird in the sky had flown away.(BU)
26 I looked, and the fruitful land was a desert;(BV)
all its towns lay in ruins(BW)
before the Lord, before his fierce anger.(BX)
27 This is what the Lord says:
“The whole land will be ruined,(BY)
though I will not destroy(BZ) it completely.
28 Therefore the earth will mourn(CA)
and the heavens above grow dark,(CB)
because I have spoken and will not relent,(CC)
I have decided and will not turn back.(CD)”
29 At the sound of horsemen and archers(CE)
every town takes to flight.(CF)
Some go into the thickets;
some climb up among the rocks.(CG)
All the towns are deserted;(CH)
no one lives in them.

4 Der Herr lässt dir verkünden: »Kehr um, Israel, komm zurück zu mir! Wirf deine abscheulichen Götzen weg und wende dich nicht länger von mir ab. 2 Wenn du bei meinem Namen schwörst, sei aufrichtig, ehrlich und halte dich daran. Dann werden auch die anderen Völker einander in meinem Namen Segen wünschen und sich glücklich schätzen, mich zu kennen.
3 Ich, der Herr, sage zu den Bewohnern von Juda und Jerusalem: Fangt ganz neu an wie ein Bauer, der ein brachliegendes Feld zum ersten Mal wieder bestellt! Streut eure Saat auf fruchtbaren Boden und nicht unter die Dornen! 4 Ändert euch von Grund auf und wendet euch von ganzem Herzen mir zu![a] Wenn ihr nicht von euren falschen Wegen umkehrt, entbrennt mein Zorn wie ein Feuer, das niemand löschen kann.«
Unheil aus dem Norden
5 »Schlagt Alarm in Juda und in Jerusalem! Blast das Signalhorn überall im Land! Ruft, so laut ihr könnt: ›Sammelt euch und flieht in die befestigten Städte!‹ 6 Stellt Wegweiser nach Zion auf! Lauft und bleibt nicht stehen! Denn aus dem Norden bringe ich, der Herr, schreckliches Unheil und Zerstörung über das Land.
7 Ein Löwe kommt aus seinem Versteck und geht auf Raubzug: Ganze Völker will er verschlingen. Ja, er verlässt sein Versteck, um euer Land zu verwüsten! Zerstört und entvölkert wird er eure Städte zurücklassen.
8 Zieht Trauergewänder an, weint und klagt: ›Immer noch lastet der glühende Zorn des Herrn auf uns!‹
9 Wenn das geschieht, werden der König und die führenden Männer allen Mut verlieren, die Priester werden entsetzt sein und die Propheten starr vor Schreck. Darauf gebe ich, der Herr, mein Wort!«
10 »Ach, Herr, mein Gott«, rief ich, »du hast dieses Volk und die Einwohner von Jerusalem schlimm getäuscht! Frieden hast du ihnen versprochen, und nun sitzt ihnen das Messer an der Kehle!« 11 Der Herr erwiderte: »Wenn es so weit ist, wird man den Einwohnern von Jerusalem und dem ganzen Volk zurufen: ›Ein Glutwind kommt von den kahlen Höhen in der Wüste!‹ Er wird meinem Volk direkt ins Gesicht blasen. Es ist kein Wind, mit dem man Spreu und Weizen voneinander trennen kann, 12 dazu ist er zu stark. Er kommt auf meinen Befehl. Jetzt werde ich persönlich mein Urteil über euch sprechen!
13 Ihr schreit: ›Seht! Der Feind rückt heran wie eine Gewitterfront! Seine Streitwagen brausen daher wie ein Wirbelsturm, seine Pferde sind schneller als Adler! Wir sind dem Untergang geweiht, wir sind verloren!‹
14 Jerusalem, reinige dein Herz von aller Bosheit, damit du gerettet wirst! Wie lange noch willst du Unheil ausbrüten?
15 Boten kommen aus der Stadt Dan und vom Bergland Ephraim. Sie bringen eine Schreckensnachricht: 16 ›Meldet Jerusalem und den umliegenden Völkern: Aus einem fernen Land rückt ein Heer zur Eroberung heran!‹ Vor den Städten Judas werden sie das Kriegsgeschrei anstimmen, 17 sich aufstellen und sie umringen wie Wächter, die ein Feld bewachen; denn dieses Volk hat sich gegen mich, den Herrn, aufgelehnt. 18 Das alles habt ihr euch selbst zu verdanken, eure eigenen Taten und Irrwege haben es euch eingebracht. Nun bekommt ihr den Lohn für eure Bosheit und müsst spüren, wie bitter und schmerzlich es ist, mich zu verlassen!«
Jeremia leidet mit seinem Volk
19 Was sind das für Qualen! Ich winde mich vor Schmerzen, und das Herz klopft mir bis zum Hals. Ich kann nicht schweigen, denn ich höre das Signalhorn und das Kriegsgeschrei! 20 Man meldet eine Niederlage nach der anderen, das ganze Land ist schon verwüstet! Ganz plötzlich wurden unsere Zelte zerstört und ihre Decken zerfetzt. 21 Wie lange muss ich die Feldzeichen der Feinde noch sehen und ihre Signalhörner hören?
22 Der Herr spricht: »Mein Volk ist töricht und verbohrt, sie wollen mich nicht kennen. Sie sind wie unverständige und dumme Kinder. Böses zu tun, damit kennen sie sich aus, aber wie man Gutes tut, das wissen sie nicht!«
23 Ich sah die Erde an – sie war leer und ohne Leben. Ich blickte zum Himmel empor – dort schien kein Licht. 24 Ich schaute zu den Bergen hinüber – sie bebten, und alle Hügel schwankten. 25 Im ganzen Land sah ich keine Menschen mehr, selbst die Vögel waren fortgeflogen. 26 Die einst fruchtbaren Felder waren eine trostlose Wüste, und die Städte lagen in Trümmern. Das hat der Herr getan in seinem glühenden Zorn. 27 Er sprach: »Ich will dieses Land verwüsten – doch nicht ganz und gar! 28 Die Erde trauert, und der Himmel verfinstert sich. Denn ich, der Herr, habe den Befehl dazu gegeben und bereue es nicht. Mein Entschluss steht fest.
29 Die Reiter und Bogenschützen stürmen mit lautem Geschrei heran, die Einwohner der Städte fliehen in die dichten Wälder und verstecken sich in Höhlen. Alle Städte sind verlassen und unbewohnt.
30 Aber du, Jerusalem, was machst du da? Deine Eroberer stehen schon vor der Tür, und du ziehst dein leuchtend rotes Festkleid an, hängst dir goldenen Schmuck um den Hals und schminkst deine Augen? Umsonst machst du dich schön! Deine Liebhaber haben dich satt, jetzt trachten sie dir nach dem Leben.« 31 Da, ein Schrei wie von einer Frau, die zum ersten Mal in den Wehen liegt! Es ist die Stadt Zion. Sie ringt nach Luft, streckt Hilfe suchend ihre Hände aus und ruft: »Ich bin verloren! Sie bringen mich um!«

2 And thou shalt swear, The Lord liveth, in truth, in judgment, and in righteousness; and the nations shall bless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory.

7 The lion is come up from his thicket, and the destroyer of the Gentiles is on his way; he is gone forth from his place to make thy land desolate; and thy cities shall be laid waste, without an inhabitant.
8 For this gird you with sackcloth, lament and howl: for the fierce anger of the Lord is not turned back from us.
9 And it shall come to pass at that day, saith the Lord, that the heart of the king shall perish, and the heart of the princes; and the priests shall be astonished, and the prophets shall wonder.

12 Even a full wind from those places shall come unto me: now also will I give sentence against them.
13 Behold, he shall come up as clouds, and his chariots shall be as a whirlwind: his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe unto us! for we are spoiled.
14 O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved. How long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee?
15 For a voice declareth from Dan, and publisheth affliction from mount Ephraim.
16 Make ye mention to the nations; behold, publish against Jerusalem, that watchers come from a far country, and give out their voice against the cities of Judah.
17 As keepers of a field, are they against her round about; because she hath been rebellious against me, saith the Lord.
18 Thy way and thy doings have procured these things unto thee; this is thy wickedness, because it is bitter, because it reacheth unto thine heart.
19 My bowels, my bowels! I am pained at my very heart; my heart maketh a noise in me; I cannot hold my peace, because thou hast heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.
20 Destruction upon destruction is cried; for the whole land is spoiled: suddenly are my tents spoiled, and my curtains in a moment.
21 How long shall I see the standard, and hear the sound of the trumpet?
22 For my people is foolish, they have not known me; they are sottish children, and they have none understanding: they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.

31 For I have heard a voice as of a woman in travail, and the anguish as of her that bringeth forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of Zion, that bewaileth herself, that spreadeth her hands, saying, Woe is me now! for my soul is wearied because of murderers.

Blessing or Curse
4 If you return,[a] Israel—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
you will return to me,(A)
if you remove your abhorrent idols(B)
from my presence
and do not waver,

in truth,(D) justice, and righteousness,(E)
and then the nations will be blessed[b] by him(F)
and will boast in him.(G)
3 For this is what the Lord says to the men of Judah and Jerusalem:

4 Circumcise yourselves to the Lord;
remove the foreskin of your hearts,(J)
men of Judah and residents of Jerusalem.
Otherwise, my wrath will break out like fire

Judgment from the North
5 Declare in Judah, proclaim in Jerusalem, and say,
Blow the ram’s horn throughout the land.(L)
Cry out loudly and say,
“Assemble yourselves,
and let’s flee to the fortified cities.”
6 Lift up a signal flag toward Zion.(M)
Run for cover! Don’t stand still!
For I am bringing disaster from the north—
a crushing blow.(N)
7 A lion has gone up from his thicket;(O)
a destroyer of nations has set out.
He has left his lair
to make your land a waste.
Your cities will be reduced to uninhabited ruins.(P)
8 Because of this, put on sackcloth;
mourn and wail,(Q)
for the Lord’s burning anger(R)
has not turned away from us.
9 “On that day”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“the king and the officials will lose their courage. The priests will tremble in fear, and the prophets will be scared speechless.”
10 I said, “Oh no, Lord God, you have certainly deceived(S) this people and Jerusalem, by announcing, ‘You will have peace,’(T) while a sword is at[c] our throats.”
11 “At that time it will be said to this people and to Jerusalem, ‘A searing wind(U) blows from the barren heights in the wilderness on the way to my dear[d] people. It comes not to winnow or to sift; 12 a wind too strong for this comes at my call.[e] Now I will also pronounce judgments against them.’”(V)

his chariots are like a storm.(X)
His horses are swifter than eagles.(Y)
Woe to us, for we are ruined!(Z)
14 Wash the evil from your heart,(AA) Jerusalem,
so that you will be delivered.
How long will you harbor
malicious thoughts?(AB)
15 For a voice announces from Dan,
proclaiming malice from Mount Ephraim.
16 Warn the nations: Look!
Proclaim to Jerusalem:
Those who besiege are coming
from a distant land;(AC)
they raise their voices
against the cities of Judah.
17 They have her surrounded(AD)
like those who guard a field,
because she has rebelled against me.(AE)
This is the Lord’s declaration.
18 Your way and your actions
have brought this on you.(AF)
This is your punishment. It is very bitter,
because it has reached your heart!
Jeremiah’s Lament
19 My anguish, my anguish![f] I writhe in agony!
Oh, the pain in[g] my heart!(AG)
My heart pounds;
I cannot be silent.
For you, my soul,
have heard the sound of the ram’s horn—
the shout of battle.
20 Disaster after disaster(AH) is reported
because the whole land is destroyed.
Suddenly my tents are destroyed,
my tent curtains, in a moment.
21 How long must I see the signal flag
and hear the sound of the ram’s horn?
22 “For my people are fools;
they do not know me.
They are foolish children,
without understanding.(AI)
They are skilled in doing what is evil,
but they do not know how to do what is good.”(AJ)
23 I looked at the earth,
and it was formless and empty.(AK)
I looked to the heavens,
and their light was gone.(AL)
24 I looked at the mountains,

25 I looked, and there was no human being,(AN)

All its cities were torn down
because of the Lord
and his burning anger.(AR)
27 For this is what the Lord says:
“The whole land will be a desolation,(AS)
but I will not finish it off.(AT)
28 Because of this, the earth will mourn;(AU)
the skies above will grow dark.(AV)
I have spoken; I have planned,
and I will not relent or turn back from it.”(AW)
29 Every city flees(AX)
at the sound of the horseman and the archer.
They enter the thickets
and climb among the rocks.(AY)
Every city is abandoned;
no inhabitant is left.
30 And you, devastated one, what are you doing(AZ)
that you dress yourself in scarlet,
that you adorn yourself with gold jewelry,
