14 Then King Zedekiah (A)sent and [a]had Jeremiah the prophet brought to him at the third entrance that is in the house of Yahweh; and the king said to Jeremiah, “I am going to (B)ask you something; do not hide anything from me.” 15 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “(C)If I tell you, will you not certainly put me to death? Besides, if I give you counsel, you will not listen to me.” 16 But King Zedekiah swore to Jeremiah in (D)secret saying, “As Yahweh lives, who made this [b](E)life for us, surely I will not put you to death, nor will I give you over to the hand of (F)these men who are seeking your [c]life.”

Common English Bible
14 King Zedekiah ordered that the prophet Jeremiah be brought to him at the third entrance of the Lord’s temple, where the king said to Jeremiah, “I want to ask you something, and don’t hide anything from me.”
15 Jeremiah replied, “If I do, you’ll kill me! And if I tell you what to do, you won’t listen to me!”
16 So King Zedekiah swore to Jeremiah behind closed doors, “As the Lord lives, who has given us this life, I won’t put you to death and I won’t hand you over to those who seek to kill you.”
