Zedekiah Warned by God
34 The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, (A)when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army, (B)all the kingdoms of the earth under his dominion, and all the people, fought against Jerusalem and all its cities, saying, 2 “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: ‘Go and (C)speak to Zedekiah king of Judah and tell him, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, (D)I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire. 3 And (E)you shall not escape from his hand, but shall surely be taken and delivered into his hand; your eyes shall see the eyes of the king of Babylon, he shall speak with you (F)face[a] to face, and you shall go to Babylon.’ ” ’ 4 Yet hear the word of the Lord, O Zedekiah king of Judah! Thus says the Lord concerning you: ‘You shall not die by the sword. 5 You shall die in peace; as in (G)the ceremonies of your fathers, the former kings who were before you, (H)so they shall burn incense for you and (I)lament for you, saying, “Alas, lord!” For I have pronounced the word, says the Lord.’ ”
6 Then Jeremiah the prophet spoke all these words to Zedekiah king of Judah in Jerusalem, 7 when the king of Babylon’s army fought against Jerusalem and all the cities of Judah that were left, against Lachish and Azekah; for only (J)these fortified cities remained of the cities of Judah.
Treacherous Treatment of Slaves
8 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, after King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people who were at Jerusalem to proclaim (K)liberty to them: 9 (L)that every man should set free his male and female slave—a Hebrew man or woman—(M)that no one should keep a Jewish brother in bondage. 10 Now when all the princes and all the people, who had entered into the covenant, heard that everyone should set free his male and female slaves, that no one should keep them in bondage anymore, they obeyed and let them go. 11 But afterward they changed their minds and made the male and female slaves return, whom they had set free, and brought them into subjection as male and female slaves.
12 Therefore the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, 13 “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: ‘I made a (N)covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, saying, 14 “At the end of (O)seven years let every man set free his Hebrew brother, who [b]has been sold to him; and when he has served you six years, you shall let him go free from you.” But your fathers did not obey Me nor incline their ear. 15 Then you [c]recently turned and did what was right in My sight—every man proclaiming liberty to his neighbor; and you (P)made a covenant before Me (Q)in the house which is called by My name. 16 Then you turned around and (R)profaned My name, and every one of you brought back his male and female slaves, whom you had set at liberty, at their pleasure, and brought them back into subjection, to be your male and female slaves.’
17 “Therefore thus says the Lord: ‘You have not obeyed Me in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother and every one to his neighbor. (S)Behold, I proclaim liberty to you,’ says the Lord—(T)‘to the sword, to pestilence, and to famine! And I will deliver you to (U)trouble among all the kingdoms of the earth. 18 And I will give the men who have transgressed My covenant, who have not performed the words of the covenant which they made before Me, when (V)they cut the calf in two and passed between the parts of it— 19 the princes of Judah, the princes of Jerusalem, the [d]eunuchs, the priests, and all the people of the land who passed between the parts of the calf— 20 I will (W)give them into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their life. Their (X)dead bodies shall be for meat for the birds of the heaven and the beasts of the earth. 21 And I will give Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes into the hand of their enemies, into the hand of those who seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army (Y)which has gone back from you. 22 (Z)Behold, I will command,’ says the Lord, ‘and cause them to return to this city. They will fight against it (AA)and take it and burn it with fire; and (AB)I will make the cities of Judah a desolation without inhabitant.’ ”

34 Iată cuvântul spus lui Ieremia din partea Domnului când(A) Nebucadneţar, împăratul Babilonului, cu toată oştirea sa şi toate împărăţiile(B) pământului de sub stăpânirea lui şi toate popoarele făceau război împotriva Ierusalimului şi împotriva tuturor cetăţilor care ţineau de el: 2 Aşa vorbeşte Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel: „Du-te de spune lui Zedechia, împăratul lui Iuda, şi zi-i: ‘Aşa vorbeşte Domnul: «Iată(C), dau cetatea aceasta în mâinile împăratului Babilonului şi o va(D) arde cu foc. 3 Şi tu(E) nu vei scăpa din mâinile lui, ci vei fi luat şi dat în mâna lui, vei da ochi cu împăratul Babilonului, el îţi va vorbi gură către gură şi vei merge la Babilon.» 4 Numai, ascultă Cuvântul Domnului, Zedechia, împăratul lui Iuda!’ Aşa vorbeşte Domnul despre tine: ‘Nu vei muri ucis de sabie, 5 ci vei muri în pace şi, cum au ars miresme(F) pentru părinţii tăi, vechii împăraţi, care au fost înaintea ta, tot aşa vor arde(G) şi pentru tine şi te vor(H) jeli, zicând: «Vai, doamne!» Căci Eu am rostit cuvântul acesta’, zice Domnul.” 6 Prorocul Ieremia a spus toate aceste cuvinte lui Zedechia, împăratul lui Iuda, la Ierusalim, 7 pe când oastea împăratului Babilonului lupta împotriva Ierusalimului şi împotriva tuturor celorlalte cetăţi ale lui Iuda, împotriva Lachisului şi Azechei, căci acestea erau cetăţile(I) care mai rămăseseră din toate cetăţile întărite ale lui Iuda.

8 Iată cuvântul spus lui Ieremia din partea Domnului, după ce împăratul Zedechia făcuse o învoială cu tot poporul Ierusalimului ca să vestească slobozenia(J) robilor, 9 pentru ca(K) fiecare să lase slobozi pe robul şi roaba sa, pe evreu şi pe evreică, şi nimeni(L) să nu mai ţină în robie pe fratele său iudeu. 10 Toate căpeteniile şi tot poporul care făcuseră învoiala s-au legat să lase slobozi fiecare pe robul şi roaba lui şi să nu-i mai ţină în robie. Ei au ascultat şi le-au dat drumul. 11 Dar, mai pe urmă(M), s-au răzgândit, au luat înapoi pe robii şi roabele pe care-i sloboziseră şi i-au silit să le fie iarăşi robi şi roabe. 12 Atunci, Cuvântul Domnului a vorbit lui Ieremia din partea Domnului astfel: 13 „Aşa vorbeşte Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel: ‘Eu am făcut un legământ cu părinţii voştri în ziua când i-am scos din ţara Egiptului, din casa robiei şi le-am zis: 14 «După şapte(N) ani, fiecare din voi să lase slobod pe fratele său evreu care i se vinde lui; şase ani să-ţi slujească şi apoi să-l laşi slobod de la tine.» Dar părinţii voştri nu M-au ascultat şi n-au luat aminte la Mine. 15 Voi v-aţi întors astăzi în voi înşivă, aţi făcut ce este bine înaintea Mea, vestind fiecare slobozenia pentru aproapele său, şi aţi făcut o învoială(O) înaintea Mea, în Casa(P) peste care este chemat Numele Meu. 16 Dar pe urmă v-aţi luat vorba îndărăt şi Mi-aţi pângărit(Q) Numele, luând iarăşi înapoi fiecare pe robii şi roabele pe care-i sloboziserăţi şi-i lăsaserăţi în voia lor, şi i-aţi silit să vă fie iarăşi robi şi roabe.’ 17 De aceea aşa vorbeşte Domnul: ‘Nu M-aţi ascultat ca să vestiţi slobozenia(R) fiecare pentru fratele său, fiecare pentru aproapele său. Iată, Eu vestesc împotriva voastră, zice Domnul, slobozenia sabiei(S), ciumei şi foametei şi vă voi face de pomină printre toate împărăţiile(T) pământului. 18 Şi pe oamenii care au călcat legământul Meu, care n-au păzit îndatoririle învoielii pe care o făcuseră înaintea Mea, tăind(U) un viţel în două şi trecând printre cele două jumătăţi ale lui, 19 şi anume pe căpeteniile lui Iuda şi pe căpeteniile Ierusalimului, pe famenii dregători, pe preoţi şi pe tot poporul ţării, care au trecut printre bucăţile viţelului, 20 îi voi da în mâinile vrăjmaşilor lor, în mâinile celor ce vor să le ia viaţa, şi trupurile lor moarte(V) vor sluji ca hrană păsărilor cerului şi fiarelor câmpului. 21 Dar pe Zedechia, împăratul lui Iuda, şi pe căpeteniile lui, îi voi da în mâinile vrăjmaşilor lor, în mâinile celor ce vor să le ia viaţa, în mâinile oştirii împăratului Babilonului, care(W) a plecat de la voi! 22 Iată(X), voi da poruncă, zice Domnul, şi-i voi aduce înapoi împotriva cetăţii acesteia; o vor(Y) bate, o vor lua şi o vor arde cu foc. Şi voi preface(Z) cetăţile lui Iuda într-un pustiu fără locuitori’.”

34 Dies ist das Wort, das vom HERRN geschah zu Jeremia, da Nebukadnezar, der König zu Babel, samt seinem Heer und allen Königreichen auf Erden, so unter seiner Gewalt waren, und allen Völkern stritt wider Jerusalem und alle ihre Städte, und sprach:
2 So spricht der HERR, der Gott Israels: Gehe hin und sage Zedekia, dem König Juda's, und sprich zu ihm: So spricht der HERR: Siehe, ich will diese Stadt in die Hände des Königs zu Babel geben, und er soll sie mit Feuer verbrennen.
3 Und du sollst seiner Hand nicht entrinnen, sondern gegriffen und in seine Hand gegeben werden, daß du ihn mit Augen sehen und mündlich mit ihm reden wirst, und gen Babel kommen.
4 Doch aber höre, Zedekia, du König Juda's, des HERRN Wort: So spricht der HERR von dir: Du sollst nicht durchs Schwert sterben,
5 sondern du sollst im Frieden sterben. Und wie deinen Vätern, den vorigen Königen, die vor dir gewesen sind, so wird man auch dir einen Brand anzünden und dich beklagen: "Ach Herr!" denn ich habe es geredet, spricht der HERR.
6 Und der Prophet Jeremia redete alle diese Worte zu Zedekia, dem König Juda's, zu Jerusalem,
7 da das Heer des Königs zu Babel schon stritt wider Jerusalem und wider alle übrigen Städte Juda's, nämlich wider Lachis und Aseka; denn diese waren noch übriggeblieben von den festen Städten Juda's.
8 Dies ist das Wort, so vom HERRN geschah zu Jeremia, nachdem der König Zedekia einen Bund gemacht hatte mit dem ganzen Volk zu Jerusalem, ein Freijahr auszurufen,
9 daß ein jeglicher seinen Knecht und seine Magd, so Hebräer und Hebräerin wären, sollte freigeben, daß kein Jude den andern leibeigen hielte.
10 Da gehorchten alle Fürsten und alles Volk, die solchen Bund eingegangen waren, daß ein jeglicher sollte seinen Knecht und seine Magd freigeben und sie nicht mehr leibeigen halten, und gaben sie los.
11 Aber darnach kehrten sie sich um und forderten die Knechte und Mägde wieder zu sich, die sie freigegeben hatten, und zwangen sie, daß sie Knechte und Mägde sein mußten.
12 Da geschah des HERRN Wort zu Jeremia vom HERRN und sprach:
13 So spricht der HERR, der Gott Israels: Ich habe einen Bund gemacht mit euren Vätern, da ich sie aus Ägyptenland, aus dem Diensthause, führte und sprach:
14 Im siebenten Jahr soll ein jeglicher seinen Bruder, der ein Hebräer ist und sich ihm verkauft und sechs Jahre gedient hat, frei von sich lassen. Aber eure Väter gehorchten mir nicht und neigten ihre Ohren nicht.
15 So habt ihr euch heute bekehrt und getan, was mir wohl gefiel, daß ihr ein Freijahr ließet ausrufen, ein jeglicher seinem Nächsten; und habt darüber einen Bund gemacht vor mir im Hause, das nach meinem Namen genannt ist.
16 Aber ihr seid umgeschlagen und entheiligt meinen Namen; und ein jeglicher fordert seinen Knecht und seine Magd wieder, die ihr hattet freigegeben, daß sie selbst eigen wären, und zwingt sie nun, daß sie eure Knechte und Mägde sein müssen.
17 Darum spricht der HERR also: Ihr gehorchtet mir nicht, daß ihr ein Freijahr ausriefet ein jeglicher seinem Bruder und seinem Nächsten; siehe, so rufe ich, spricht der HERR, euch ein Freijahr aus zum Schwert, zur Pestilenz, zum Hunger, und will euch in keinem Königreich auf Erden bleiben lassen.
18 Und will die Leute, die meinen Bund übertreten und die Worte des Bundes, den sie vor mir gemacht haben, nicht halten, so machen wie das Kalb, das sie in zwei Stücke geteilt haben und sind zwischen den Teilen hingegangen,
19 nämlich die Fürsten Juda's, die Fürsten Jerusalems, die Kämmerer, die Priester und das ganze Volk im Lande, so zwischen des Kalbes Stücken hingegangen sind.
20 Und will sie geben in ihrer Feinde Hand und derer, die ihnen nach dem Leben stehen, daß ihre Leichname sollen den Vögeln unter dem Himmel und den Tieren auf Erden zur Speise werden.
21 Und Zedekia, den König Juda's, und seine Fürsten will ich geben in die Hände ihrer Feinde und derer, die ihnen nach dem Leben stehen, und dem Heer des Königs zu Babel, die jetzt von euch abgezogen sind.
22 Denn siehe, ich will ihnen befehlen, spricht der HERR, und will sie wieder vor diese Stadt bringen, und sollen wider sie streiten und sie gewinnen und mit Feuer verbrennen; und ich will die Städte Juda's verwüsten, daß niemand mehr da wohnen soll.
