Now at that time the military force of the king of Babylon was besieging Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the (B)court of the guard, which was in the house of the king of Judah, because Zedekiah king of Judah had (C)shut him up, saying, “Why do you (D)prophesy, saying, ‘(E)Thus says Yahweh, “Behold, I am about to (F)give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will capture it; and Zedekiah king of Judah will (G)not escape out of the hand of the Chaldeans, but he will surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will (H)speak with him [a]face to face and see him eye to eye; and he will (I)lead Zedekiah to Babylon, and he will be there until I [b]visit him,” declares Yahweh. “If you fight against the Chaldeans, you will (J)not succeed”’?”

Jeremiah Purchases a Field

32 This is[a] the message that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the tenth year of the reign of[b] Zedekiah, king of Judah. It was the eighteenth year of the reign of[c] Nebuchadnezzar. The army of the king of Babylon was then besieging Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was confined in the courtyard of the guard at the palace of the king of Judah where Zedekiah had confined him. Zedekiah had said,[d] “Why did you prophesy and say these things? You said,[e] ‘This is what the Lord says: “I’m about to give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will capture it. Zedekiah, king of Judah, won’t escape from[f] the Chaldeans, for he has surely been given over to the king of Babylon. He will speak to him face to face and look at him eye to eye. The king of Babylon[g] will take Zedekiah to Babylon and there he will stay until I judge him,” declares the Lord. “If you fight against the Chaldeans, you won’t succeed.”’”
