The Seventy-Year Exile
25 This is the word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim(A) son of Josiah, king of Judah (which was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon). 2 The prophet Jeremiah spoke concerning all the people of Judah and all the residents of Jerusalem as follows: 3 “From the thirteenth year of Josiah son of Amon,(B) king of Judah, until this very day—23 years—the word of the Lord has come to me, and I have spoken to you time and time again,[a](C) but you have not obeyed. 4 The Lord sent all His servants the prophets to you time and time again,[b] but you have not obeyed or even paid attention.[c](D) 5 He announced, ‘Turn, each of you, from your[d] evil way of life and from your evil deeds.(E) Live in the land the Lord gave to you and your ancestors long ago and forever. 6 Do not follow other gods to serve them and to worship them,(F) and do not provoke Me to anger by the work of your hands.(G) Then I will do you no harm.
7 “‘But you would not obey Me’—this is the Lord’s declaration—‘in order that you might provoke Me to anger by the work of your hands and bring disaster on yourselves.’
8 “Therefore, this is what the Lord of Hosts says: ‘Because you have not obeyed My words, 9 I am going to send for all the families of the north’(H)—this is the Lord’s declaration—‘and send for My servant(I) Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and I will bring them against this land, against its residents, and against all these surrounding nations, and I will completely destroy them and make them a desolation,(J) a derision, and ruins forever. 10 I will eliminate the sound of joy and gladness from them—the voice of the groom and the bride,(K) the sound of the millstones and the light of the lamp. 11 This whole land will become a desolate ruin, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon for 70 years.(L) 12 When the 70 years are completed, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation’—this is the Lord’s declaration—‘the land of the Chaldeans, for their guilt, and I will make it a ruin forever.(M) 13 I will bring on that land all My words I have spoken against it, all that is written in this book that Jeremiah prophesied against all the nations. 14 For many nations and great kings will enslave them, and I will repay them according to their deeds(N) and the work of their hands.’”
The Cup of God’s Wrath
15 This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me: “Take this cup of the wine of wrath from My hand and make all the nations I am sending you to, drink from it.(O) 16 They will drink, stagger,[e] and go out of their minds because of the sword I am sending among them.”
17 So I took the cup from the Lord’s hand and made all the nations drink from it, everyone the Lord sent me to. 18 These included:
Jerusalem and the other cities of Judah, its kings and its officials, to make them a desolate ruin, an object of scorn and cursing—as it is today;
19 Pharaoh king of Egypt, his officers, his leaders, all his people,
20 and all the mixed peoples;
all the kings of the land of Uz;
all the kings of the land of the Philistines—Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod;
21 Edom, Moab, and the Ammonites;
22 all the kings of Tyre,
all the kings of Sidon,
and the kings of the coastlands across the sea;
23 Dedan, Tema, Buz, and all those who shave their temples;[f](P)
24 all the kings of Arabia,
and all the kings of the mixed peoples who have settled in the desert;
25 all the kings of Zimri,
all the kings of Elam,
and all the kings of Media;
26 all the kings of the north, both near and far from one another;
that is, all the kingdoms of the world which are on the face of the earth.
Finally, the king of Sheshach[g] will drink after them.
27 “Then you are to say to them: This is what the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Drink,(Q) get drunk, and vomit. Fall down and never get up again, as a result of the sword I am sending among you. 28 If[h] they refuse to take the cup from you and drink, you are to say to them: This is what the Lord of Hosts says: You must drink! 29 For I am already bringing disaster on the city that bears My name,(R) so how could you possibly go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for I am summoning a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth”—this is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts.(S)
Judgment on the Whole World
30 “As for you, you are to prophesy all these things to them, and say to them:
The Lord roars from heaven;
He raises His voice from His holy dwelling.(T)
He roars loudly over His grazing land;
He calls out with a shout, like those who tread grapes,
against all the inhabitants of the earth.
31 The tumult reaches to the ends of the earth
because the Lord brings a case against(U) the nations.
He enters into judgment with all flesh.
As for the wicked, He hands them over to the sword—
this is the Lord’s declaration.
32 “This is what the Lord of Hosts says:
Pay attention! Disaster spreads
from nation to nation.
A great storm is stirred up
from the ends of the earth.”(V)
33 Those slain by the Lord(W) on that day will be spread from one end of the earth to the other. They will not be mourned,(X) gathered, or buried. They will be like manure on the surface of the ground.
34 Wail, you shepherds, and cry out.
Roll in the dust,[i](Y) you leaders of the flock.
Because the days of your slaughter have come,
you will fall and become shattered like a precious vase.
35 Flight will be impossible for the shepherds,
and escape, for the leaders of the flock.
36 Hear the sound of the shepherds’ cry,
the wail of the leaders of the flock,
for the Lord is destroying their pasture.
37 Peaceful grazing land will become lifeless
because of the Lord’s burning anger.(Z)
38 He has left His den like a lion,
for their land has become a desolation
because of the sword[j] of the oppressor,(AA)
because of His burning anger.

Nu Mă mâniaţi prin lucrarea mâinilor voastre şi astfel nu vă voi face nimic rău.» 7 Dar voi nu M-aţi ascultat, zice Domnul, ci, prin lucrarea mâinilor voastre, M-aţi provocat la mânie şi v-aţi făcut rău vouă înşivă.
8 De aceea, aşa vorbeşte Domnul, Dumnezeul Oştirilor: «Pentru că nu aţi ascultat de cuvintele Mele, 9 voi strânge toate clanurile din nord, zice Domnul, şi pe slujitorul Meu Nebucadneţar, împăratul Babilonului, şi îi voi aduce împotriva acestei ţări, împotriva locuitorilor ei şi împotriva tuturor neamurilor de jur împrejur. Le voi distruge cu desăvârşire[a] şi le voi preface într-o pricină de groază şi de batjocură, într-o ruină veşnică. 10 Voi face să le piară strigătele de bucurie şi strigătele de veselie, glasul mirelui şi al miresei, zgomotul râşniţei şi lumina lămpii. 11 Toată ţara aceasta va deveni un loc pustiu şi îngrozitor şi toate neamurile acestea vor sluji împăratului Babilonului timp de şaptezeci de ani. 12 Dar când se vor împlini cei şaptezeci de ani, îl voi pedepsi pe împăratul Babilonului şi pe neamul lui, ţara caldeenilor, pentru nelegiuirea lor, zice Domnul. O voi preface într-o ruină veşnică. 13 Voi aduce peste ea toate lucrurile pe care le-am rostit împotriva ei, tot ce este scris în cartea aceasta, tot ce a fost profeţit de Ieremia împotriva tuturor neamurilor. 14 Căci ei vor fi înrobiţi de multe neamuri şi de regi puternici. Le voi răsplăti după faptele şi după lucrarea mâinilor lor.»“
Cupa mâniei Domnului
15 „Aşa mi-a vorbit Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel: «Ia din mâna Mea această cupă plină cu vinul mâniei Mele şi dă-l să-l bea la toate neamurile la care te trimit. 16 Când îl vor bea, vor ameţi şi vor fi ca nişte nebuni la vederea sabiei pe care o voi trimite printre ei.» 17 Eu am luat cupa din mâna Domnului ca să le dau să bea tuturor neamurilor la care m-a trimis Domnul: 18 Ierusalimului şi cetăţilor lui Iuda, regilor şi conducătorilor lui, ca să le prefacă în ruină, într-o pricină de groază, de batjocură şi de blestem, ca în ziua de azi; 19 lui Faraon, monarhul Egiptului, slujitorilor lui, conducătorilor lui, întregului său popor 20 şi întregului amestec de popoare de acolo, tuturor regilor ţării Uţ, tuturor regilor filistenilor, – cei ai Aşchelonului, ai Gazei, ai Ekronului şi ai rămăşiţei Aşdodului –, 21 Edomului, Moabului şi fiilor lui Amon; 22 tuturor regilor Tirului şi Sidonului, regilor ostroavelor de dincolo de mare; 23 Dedanului, Temei, Buzului şi tuturor celor ce îşi rad colţurile bărbii[b]; 24 tuturor regilor Arabiei şi tuturor regilor amestecului de popoare care locuiesc în pustie; 25 tuturor regilor Zimrei, tuturor regilor Elamului şi Mediei; 26 tuturor regilor din nord, de aproape şi de departe, şi unora şi altora, tuturor regatelor de pe faţa pământului. După ei va bea şi împăratul Şeşakului[c].
27 Să le spui că aşa vorbeşte Domnul Oştirilor, Dumnezeul lui Israel: «Beţi, îmbătaţi-vă, vomaţi şi cădeţi fără să vă mai ridicaţi la vederea sabiei pe care o voi trimite în mijlocul vostru!»
28 Dacă vor refuza să ia cupa din mâna ta şi s-o bea, să le spui că aşa vorbeşte Domnul Oştirilor: «O veţi bea cu siguranţă! 29 Căci iată, încep să aduc nenorocirea în cetatea peste care este chemat Numele Meu! Şi voi să rămâneţi nepedepsiţi?! Nu veţi rămâne nepedepsiţi, căci voi chema sabia împotriva tuturor locuitorilor pământului, zice Domnul Oştirilor.»
30 Iar tu, să profeţeşti împotriva lor toate aceste cuvinte şi să le spui:
«Domnul va răcni de pe înălţimi,
va face să-i răsune glasul din Locaşul Său cel sfânt
şi va răcni puternic împotriva locuinţei Sale.
Va striga împotriva tuturor locuitorilor pământului
asemenea celor ce calcă în picioare strugurii.
31 Vuietul va ajunge până la capătul pământului,
căci Domnul se ceartă cu neamurile;
El intră la judecată cu orice om
şi-i dă pe cei răi pradă sabiei, zice Domnul.»“
32 „Aşa vorbeşte Domnul Oştirilor:
«Iată, nenorocirea se răspândeşte
de la un neam la altul,
şi de la capătul pământului
se ridică o mare furtună.»
33 În ziua aceea, cei pe care-i va ucide Domnul vor fi peste tot – de la un capăt al pământului la celălalt. Nu vor fi nici jeliţi, nici adunaţi, nici îngropaţi, ci vor fi un gunoi pe faţa pământului.
34 «Bociţi şi strigaţi, voi, păstori!
Tăvăliţi-vă în cenuşă, voi, conducători ai turmei,
căci a venit ziua să fiţi înjunghiaţi;
veţi zăcea împrăştiaţi şi căzuţi la pământ
asemenea fărâmiţelor unui vas preţios.»
35 Nu mai este nici o scăpare pentru păstori,
nici un loc de refugiu pentru conducătorii turmei!
36 Se aud strigătele păstorilor
şi bocetele conducătorilor turmei,
căci Domnul le distruge păşunea.
37 Ţarcurile[d] lor liniştite sunt devastate
de mânia aprigă a Domnului.
38 Ca un pui de leu, El Şi-a părăsit vizuina,
aşa că ţara a devenit o pustie
din cauza sabiei[e] nimicitorului
şi a mâniei aprinse a Domnului.“

25 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah, (A)in the fourth year of (B)Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah (which was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon), 2 which Jeremiah the prophet spoke to all the people of Judah and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying: 3 (C)“From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, even to this day, this is the twenty-third year in which the word of the Lord has come to me; and I have spoken to you, rising early and speaking, (D)but you have not listened. 4 And the Lord has sent to you all His servants the prophets, (E)rising early and sending them, but you have not listened nor inclined your ear to hear. 5 They said, (F)‘Repent now everyone of his evil way and his evil doings, and dwell in the land that the Lord has given to you and your fathers forever and ever. 6 Do not go after other gods to serve them and worship them, and do not provoke Me to anger with the works of your hands; and I will not harm you.’ 7 Yet you have not listened to Me,” says the Lord, “that you might (G)provoke Me to anger with the works of your hands to your own hurt.
8 “Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘Because you have not heard My words, 9 behold, I will send and take (H)all the families of the north,’ says the Lord, ‘and Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, (I)My servant, and will bring them against this land, against its inhabitants, and against these nations all around, and will utterly destroy them, and (J)make them an astonishment, a hissing, and perpetual desolations. 10 Moreover I will [a]take from them the (K)voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, (L)the sound of the millstones and the light of the lamp. 11 And this whole land shall be a desolation and an astonishment, and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy (M)years.
12 ‘Then it will come to pass, (N)when [b]seventy years are completed, that I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, the land of the Chaldeans, for their iniquity,’ says the Lord; (O)‘and I will make it a perpetual desolation. 13 So I will bring on that land all My words which I have pronounced against it, all that is written in this book, which Jeremiah has prophesied concerning all the nations. 14 (P)(For many nations (Q)and great kings shall (R)be served by them also; (S)and I will repay them according to their deeds and according to the works of their own hands.)’ ”
Judgment on the Nations
15 For thus says the Lord God of Israel to me: “Take this (T)wine cup of [c]fury from My hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send you, to drink it. 16 And (U)they will drink and stagger and go mad because of the sword that I will send among them.”
17 Then I took the cup from the Lord’s hand, and made all the nations drink, to whom the Lord had sent me: 18 Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, its kings and its princes, to make them (V)a desolation, an astonishment, a hissing, and (W)a curse, as it is this day; 19 Pharaoh king of Egypt, his servants, his princes, and all his people; 20 all the mixed multitude, all the kings of (X)the land of Uz, all the kings of the land of the (Y)Philistines (namely, Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and (Z)the remnant of Ashdod); 21 (AA)Edom, Moab, and the people of Ammon; 22 all the kings of (AB)Tyre, all the kings of Sidon, and the kings of the coastlands which are across the (AC)sea; 23 (AD)Dedan, Tema, Buz, and all who are in the farthest corners; 24 all the kings of Arabia and all the kings of the (AE)mixed multitude who dwell in the desert; 25 all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of (AF)Elam, and all the kings of the (AG)Medes; 26 (AH)all the kings of the north, far and near, one with another; and all the kingdoms of the world which are on the face of the earth. Also the king of [d]Sheshach shall drink after them.
27 “Therefore you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (AI)“Drink, (AJ)be drunk, and vomit! Fall and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you.” ’ 28 And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup from your hand to drink, then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: “You shall certainly drink! 29 For behold, (AK)I begin to bring calamity on the city (AL)which is called by My name, and should you be utterly unpunished? You shall not be unpunished, for (AM)I will call for a sword on all the inhabitants of the earth,” says the Lord of hosts.’
30 “Therefore prophesy against them all these words, and say to them:
‘The Lord will (AN)roar from on high,
And utter His voice from (AO)His holy habitation;
He will roar mightily against (AP)His fold.
He will give (AQ)a shout, as those who tread the grapes,
Against all the inhabitants of the earth.
31 A noise will come to the ends of the earth—
For the Lord has (AR)a controversy with the nations;
(AS)He will plead His case with all flesh.
He will give those who are wicked to the sword,’ says the Lord.”
32 Thus says the Lord of hosts:
“Behold, disaster shall go forth
From nation to nation,
And (AT)a great whirlwind shall be raised up
From the farthest parts of the earth.
33 (AU)And at that day the slain of the Lord shall be from one end of the earth even to the other end of the earth. They shall not be (AV)lamented, (AW)or gathered, or buried; they shall become refuse on the ground.
34 “Wail,(AX) shepherds, and cry!
Roll about in the ashes,
You leaders of the flock!
For the days of your slaughter and your dispersions are fulfilled;
You shall fall like a precious vessel.
35 And the shepherds will have no [e]way to flee,
Nor the leaders of the flock to escape.
36 A voice of the cry of the shepherds,
And a wailing of the leaders to the flock will be heard.
For the Lord has plundered their pasture,
37 And the peaceful dwellings are cut down
Because of the fierce anger of the Lord.
38 He has left His lair like the lion;
For their land is desolate
Because of the fierceness of the Oppressor,
And because of His fierce anger.”
