25 I have heard what the prophets have said, that prophesy lies in my name, saying, I have dreamed, I have dreamed. 26 How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies, even the prophets of the deceit of their own heart? 27 that think to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams which they tell every man to his neighbor, as their fathers forgat my name for Baal. 28 The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the straw to the wheat? saith Jehovah. 29 Is not my word like fire? saith Jehovah; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces? 30 Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, saith Jehovah, that steal my words every one from his neighbor. 31 Behold, I am against the prophets, saith Jehovah, that [a]use their tongues, and say, He saith. 32 Behold, I am against them that prophesy lying dreams, saith Jehovah, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their vain boasting: yet I sent them not, nor commanded them; neither do they profit this people at all, saith Jehovah.

  1. Jeremiah 23:31 Hebrew take.

25 “I have heard what the prophets who prophesy lies[a] have said in my name, saying,[b] ‘I have dreamed! I have dreamed!’ 26 How long[c] will this be in the hearts[d] of the prophets who prophesy lies,[e] even the prophets of the deceitfulness of their hearts,[f] 27 who plan to make my people forget my name by their dreams that they tell each one to his neighbor, just as their ancestors[g] forgot my name through Baal? 28 The prophet who has with him a dream, let him tell the dream. But the prophet[h] who has my word with him, let him speak my word faithfully. What is straw compared to wheat?”[i] declares[j] Yahweh. 29 Is not my word like fire?” declares[k] Yahweh, “and like a blacksmith’s hammer that breaks a rock into pieces?

30 Therefore[l] look, I am against the prophets,” declares[m] Yahweh, “who steal my words each one from his neighbor. 31 Look, I am against the prophets,” declares[n] Yahweh, “who take their tongues[o] and declare as prophets, ‘Yahweh declares.’[p] 32 Look, I am against those who prophesy dreams of lies,”[q] declares[r] Yahweh, “and tell them, and they caused my people to err through their lies, and in their recklessness, when I myself have not sent them nor commanded them, so they profit not this people at all,” declares[s] Yahweh.
