“The days are coming,” declares the Lord,
“when I will raise up for David[a] a righteous Branch,(A)
a King(B) who will reign(C) wisely
and do what is just and right(D) in the land.
In his days Judah will be saved
and Israel will live in safety.(E)
This is the name(F) by which he will be called:
    The Lord Our Righteous Savior.(G)

“So then, the days are coming,”(H) declares the Lord, “when people will no longer say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the Israelites up out of Egypt,’(I) but they will say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the descendants of Israel up out of the land of the north and out of all the countries where he had banished them.’ Then they will live in their own land.”(J)

Lying Prophets

Concerning the prophets:

My heart(K) is broken within me;
    all my bones tremble.(L)
I am like a drunken man,
like a strong man overcome by wine,
because of the Lord
    and his holy words.(M)
10 The land is full of adulterers;(N)
because of the curse[b](O) the land lies parched
and the pastures(P) in the wilderness are withered.(Q)
The prophets follow an evil course
    and use their power unjustly.

11 “Both prophet and priest are godless;(R)
even in my temple(S) I find their wickedness,”
declares the Lord.
12 “Therefore their path will become slippery;(T)
they will be banished to darkness
    and there they will fall.
I will bring disaster on them
in the year they are punished,(U)
declares the Lord.

13 “Among the prophets of Samaria
    I saw this repulsive thing:
They prophesied by Baal(V)
and led my people Israel astray.(W)
14 And among the prophets of Jerusalem
    I have seen something horrible:(X)
They commit adultery and live a lie.(Y)
They strengthen the hands of evildoers,(Z)
so that not one of them turns from their wickedness.(AA)
They are all like Sodom(AB) to me;
the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah.”(AC)

15 Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty says concerning the prophets:

“I will make them eat bitter food
    and drink poisoned water,(AD)
because from the prophets of Jerusalem
ungodliness(AE) has spread throughout the land.”

16 This is what the Lord Almighty says:

“Do not listen(AF) to what the prophets are prophesying to you;
they fill you with false hopes.
They speak visions(AG) from their own minds,
not from the mouth(AH) of the Lord.
17 They keep saying(AI) to those who despise me,
‘The Lord says: You will have peace.’(AJ)
And to all who follow the stubbornness(AK) of their hearts
they say, ‘No harm(AL) will come to you.’
18 But which of them has stood in the council(AM) of the Lord
to see or to hear his word?
Who has listened and heard his word?

  2. Jeremiah 23:10 Or because of these things

When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip,(A) “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.

Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages[a] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”

Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother,(B) spoke up, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”(C)

10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks,(D) and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.

12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.

14 After the people saw the sign(E) Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”(F)
