Jerusalem’s Doom Is Sealed
21 The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord when (A)King Zedekiah sent to him (B)Pashhur the son of Melchiah, and (C)Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, saying, 2 (D)“Please inquire of the Lord for us, for [a]Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon makes war against us. Perhaps the Lord will deal with us according to all His wonderful works, that the king may go away from us.”
3 Then Jeremiah said to them, “Thus you shall say to Zedekiah, 4 ‘Thus says the Lord God of Israel: “Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands, with which you fight against the king of Babylon and the [b]Chaldeans who besiege you outside the walls; and (E)I will assemble them in the midst of this city. 5 I (F)Myself will fight against you with an (G)outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger and fury and great wrath. 6 I will strike the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast; they shall die of a great pestilence. 7 And afterward,” says the Lord, (H)“I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah, his servants and the people, and such as are left in this city from the pestilence and the sword and the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those who seek their life; and he shall strike them with the edge of the sword. (I)He shall not spare them, or have pity or mercy.” ’
8 “Now you shall say to this people, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Behold, (J)I set before you the way of life and the way of death. 9 He who (K)remains in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence; but he who goes out and [c]defects to the Chaldeans who besiege you, he shall (L)live, and his life shall be as a prize to him. 10 For I have (M)set My face against this city for adversity and not for good,” says the Lord. (N)“It shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall (O)burn it with fire.” ’
Message to the House of David
11 “And concerning the house of the king of Judah, say, ‘Hear the word of the Lord, 12 O house of David! Thus says the Lord:
(P)“Execute[d] judgment (Q)in the morning;
And deliver him who is plundered
Out of the hand of the oppressor,
Lest My fury go forth like fire
And burn so that no one can quench it,
Because of the evil of your doings.
13 “Behold, (R)I am against you, O [e]inhabitant of the valley,
And rock of the plain,” says the Lord,
“Who say, (S)‘Who shall come down against us?
Or who shall enter our dwellings?’
14 But I will punish you according to the (T)fruit of your [f]doings,” says the Lord;
“I will kindle a fire in its forest,
And (U)it shall devour all things around it.” ’ ”

21 Voici ce que l’Eternel dit à Jérémie quand le roi Sédécias[a] envoya vers lui Pashhour, fils de Malkiya, et le prêtre Sophonie, fils de Maaséya[b], pour lui dire : 2 Veuille consulter l’Eternel pour nous, car Nabuchodonosor[c], roi de Babylone, nous attaque[d]. Peut-être l’Eternel fera-t-il encore pour nous un de ses grands prodiges[e], pour le faire partir.
3 Mais Jérémie leur répondit : Vous direz à Sédécias : 4 Voici ce que déclare l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël : Les combattants qui luttent avec leurs armes à l’extérieur contre le roi de Babylone et contre les Chaldéens qui vous assiègent, je vais les faire se replier à l’intérieur de cette ville. 5 Et moi-même, je combattrai contre vous, en déployant ma puissance, avec colère, avec fureur, et une grande indignation.
6 Je frapperai tout ce qui habite dans cette ville, les hommes aussi bien que les bêtes, d’une terrible peste dont ils mourront. 7 Après cela – l’Eternel le déclare – je livrerai Sédécias, roi de Juda, ses fonctionnaires et la population de cette ville qui aura survécu à la peste, à l’épée et à la famine, je les livrerai à Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, à leurs ennemis et à ceux qui en veulent à leur vie. Nabuchodonosor les fera massacrer par l’épée ; il ne les épargnera pas, il sera sans pitié pour eux et n’aura aucune compassion.
8 Puis, tu diras à ce peuple : Voici ce que déclare l’Eternel : Je vous donne le choix entre le chemin de la vie et celui de la mort. 9 Celui qui restera dans cette ville mourra par l’épée, par la famine ou par la peste. Mais celui qui en sortira pour se rendre aux Chaldéens qui vous assiègent aura la vie sauve ; il aura au moins gagné cela. 10 En effet, l’Eternel le déclare, je me tourne contre cette ville, pour lui faire du mal et non du bien : elle sera livrée au roi de Babylone qui y mettra le feu.
Au roi de Juda
11 Et voici ce que tu diras à la maison du roi de Juda :
12 Ecoutez la parole ╵de l’Eternel,
dynastie de David !
Voici ce que déclare l’Eternel :
Rendez donc la justice ╵dès le matin, selon le droit,
délivrez l’opprimé ╵de l’oppresseur,
car sinon ma colère ╵éclatera tout comme un feu
et elle brûlera ╵sans qu’on puisse l’éteindre,
à cause de vos actes ╵qui sont mauvais.
13 Je vais m’en prendre à toi,
palais du roi[f]
– l’Eternel le déclare –
toi qui t’es installé ╵au rocher du plateau ╵qui domine la plaine !
J’en veux à vous qui dites : ╵« Qui nous attaquera ?
Qui pourra pénétrer ╵jusque dans nos bastions ? »
14 Moi, j’interviendrai contre vous
selon ce qu’ont produit vos actes,
l’Eternel le déclare.
Je mettrai le feu ╵à ta forêt[g],
et il consumera ╵tout ce qui se trouve autour d’elle.

God Rejects Zedekiah’s Request
21 The word came to Jeremiah from the Lord when King Zedekiah(A) sent to him Pashhur(B) son of Malkijah and the priest Zephaniah(C) son of Maaseiah. They said: 2 “Inquire(D) now of the Lord for us because Nebuchadnezzar[a](E) king of Babylon(F) is attacking us. Perhaps the Lord will perform wonders(G) for us as in times past so that he will withdraw from us.”
3 But Jeremiah answered them, “Tell Zedekiah, 4 ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I am about to turn(H) against you the weapons of war that are in your hands, which you are using to fight the king of Babylon and the Babylonians[b] who are outside the wall besieging(I) you. And I will gather them inside this city. 5 I myself will fight(J) against you with an outstretched hand(K) and a mighty arm(L) in furious anger and in great wrath. 6 I will strike(M) down those who live in this city—both man and beast—and they will die of a terrible plague.(N) 7 After that, declares the Lord, I will give Zedekiah(O) king of Judah, his officials and the people in this city who survive the plague,(P) sword and famine, into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon(Q) and to their enemies(R) who want to kill them.(S) He will put them to the sword;(T) he will show them no mercy or pity or compassion.’(U)
8 “Furthermore, tell the people, ‘This is what the Lord says: See, I am setting before you the way of life(V) and the way of death. 9 Whoever stays in this city will die by the sword, famine or plague.(W) But whoever goes out and surrenders(X) to the Babylonians who are besieging you will live; they will escape with their lives.(Y) 10 I have determined to do this city harm(Z) and not good, declares the Lord. It will be given into the hands(AA) of the king of Babylon, and he will destroy it with fire.’(AB)
11 “Moreover, say to the royal house(AC) of Judah, ‘Hear the word of the Lord. 12 This is what the Lord says to you, house of David:
“‘Administer justice(AD) every morning;
rescue from the hand of the oppressor(AE)
the one who has been robbed,
or my wrath will break out and burn like fire(AF)
because of the evil(AG) you have done—
burn with no one to quench(AH) it.
13 I am against(AI) you, Jerusalem,
you who live above this valley(AJ)
on the rocky plateau, declares the Lord—
you who say, “Who can come against us?
Who can enter our refuge?”(AK)
14 I will punish you as your deeds(AL) deserve,
declares the Lord.
I will kindle a fire(AM) in your forests(AN)
that will consume everything around you.’”

2 Enquire, I pray thee, of the Lord for us; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon maketh war against us; if so be that the Lord will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, that he may go up from us.

10 For I have set my face against this city for evil, and not for good, saith the Lord: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.
11 And touching the house of the king of Judah, say, Hear ye the word of the Lord;
12 O house of David, thus saith the Lord; Execute judgment in the morning, and deliver him that is spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor, lest my fury go out like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.
13 Behold, I am against thee, O inhabitant of the valley, and rock of the plain, saith the Lord; which say, Who shall come down against us? or who shall enter into our habitations?
14 But I will punish you according to the fruit of your doings, saith the Lord: and I will kindle a fire in the forest thereof, and it shall devour all things round about it.
