20 Pasjur, hijo de Imer, el principal sacerdote supervisor del Templo del Señor, oyó a Jeremías profetizar todo aquello. 2 Entonces Pasjur mandó que azotaran al profeta Jeremías y que lo metieran en el cepo que hay en la Puerta de Benjamín, la de arriba, en el Templo del Señor. 3 A la mañana siguiente mandó Pasjur sacar a Jeremías del cepo. Jeremías entonces le dijo:
— El Señor ya no te llama Pasjur, sino Magor Missabib (Terror-En-Derredor); 4 pues así dice el Señor: Te voy a convertir en terror para ti y todos tus allegados, que caerán abatidos por la espada enemiga delante de tus ojos. Y voy a entregar a toda la gente de Judá en manos del rey de Babilonia, que los deportará a Babilonia donde los matará a espada. 5 Respecto a la riqueza de esta ciudad, a sus posesiones, a sus objetos de valor y a todos los tesoros de los reyes de Judá, voy a ponerlos a merced de sus enemigos, que los saquearán, los tomarán y se los llevarán a Babilonia. 6 Y tú, Pasjur, junto con toda la gente de tu casa, irás al destierro, a Babilonia. Allí morirás y allí serás enterrado con todos tus allegados, a quienes profetizabas en falso.
Quinta y última confesión
7 Me sedujiste, Señor, y quedé seducido;
me agarraste con fuerza y me sometiste.
Yo era objeto de mofa todo el día,
todo el mundo se burlaba de mí.
8 Cuando hablo, tengo que gritar
anunciando violencia y destrucción;
la palabra del Señor me servía
de insulto y burla todo el día.
9 Me decía: No me acordaré más de él,
no hablaré más en su nombre.
Pero algo ardía en mi corazón como fuego,
algo ardiente encerrado en mis huesos,
que trataba inútilmente de apagar.
10 Oía a muchos murmurar:
“Este es Terror-En-Derredor,
denúncienlo, vamos a denunciarlo”.
La gente que me era más cercana
andaba acechando mi traspié:
“Tal vez, seducido, lo sometamos
y podamos vengarnos de él”.
11 Pero el Señor está conmigo
como poderoso defensor;
por eso tropiezan al perseguirme
y son incapaces de someterme.
Quedan decepcionados al fracasar,
nunca se olvidará su eterno deshonor.
12 Señor, que examinas al honrado,
que ves sentimientos y pensamientos,
¡que yo vea que te vengas de ellos,
ya que a ti he encomendado mi causa!
13 ¡Canten al Señor, alaben al Señor,
que libró la vida del pobre
del poder de los malvados!
14 ¡Maldito el día en que nací;
no sea bendito el día
en que me dio a luz mi madre!
15 ¡Maldito el que felicitó
a mi padre diciendo:
“Te ha nacido un hijo varón”,
dándole así una alegría!
16 ¡Sea ese hombre como las ciudades
que el Señor destruyó sin compasión!
¡Que oiga alaridos por la mañana
y toque de alarma a mediodía!
17 ¡Por qué no me mataría en el vientre!
Mi madre habría sido mi tumba,
con su vientre preñado para siempre.
18 ¿Para qué salí del vientre?
¿Para pasar penas y problemas
y consumir mis días deshonrado?

Jeremiah Persecuted by Pashhur
20 Now (A)Pashhur the priest, the son of (B)Immer, who was (C)chief officer in the house of the Lord, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things. 2 Then (D)Pashhur beat Jeremiah the prophet, and put him (E)in the stocks that were in the upper (F)Benjamin Gate of the house of the Lord. 3 The next day, when (G)Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, “The Lord does not call your name (H)Pashhur, but Terror on Every Side. 4 For thus says the Lord: Behold, I will make you (I)a terror to yourself and to all your friends. They shall fall by the sword of their enemies while you look on. And I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon. He shall carry them captive to Babylon, and shall strike them down with the sword. 5 Moreover, (J)I will give all the wealth of the city, all its gains, all its (K)prized belongings, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah into the hand of their enemies, who shall plunder them and seize them and carry them to Babylon. 6 And you, (L)Pashhur, and all who dwell in your house, shall go into captivity. To Babylon you shall go, and there you shall die, and there you shall be buried, you and all your friends, (M)to whom you have prophesied falsely.”
7 O Lord, (N)you have deceived me,
and I was deceived;
(O)you are stronger than I,
and you have prevailed.
(P)I have become a laughingstock all the day;
everyone mocks me.
8 For whenever I speak, I cry out,
I shout, (Q)“Violence and destruction!”
For (R)the word of the Lord has become for me
(S)a reproach and (T)derision all day long.
9 If I say, “I will not mention him,
or speak any more in his name,”
(U)there is in my heart as it were a burning fire
shut up in my bones,
and (V)I am weary with holding it in,
and I cannot.
10 (W)For I hear many whispering.
(X)Terror is on every side!
“Denounce him! (Y)Let us denounce him!”
say all my (Z)close friends,
(AA)watching for (AB)my fall.
“Perhaps he will be deceived;
then (AC)we can overcome him
and take our revenge on him.”
11 But (AD)the Lord is with me as a dread warrior;
therefore my persecutors will stumble;
(AE)they will not overcome me.
(AF)They will be greatly shamed,
for they will not succeed.
Their (AG)eternal dishonor
will never be forgotten.
12 O Lord of hosts, who tests the righteous,
(AH)who sees the heart and the mind,[a]
let me see your vengeance upon them,
for to you have I committed my cause.
13 (AI)Sing to the Lord;
praise the Lord!
For he has delivered the life of the needy
from the hand of evildoers.
14 (AJ)Cursed be the day
on which I was born!
The day when my mother bore me,
let it not be blessed!
15 Cursed be the man who brought the news to my father,
“A son is born to you,”
(AK)making him very glad.
16 Let that man be like (AL)the cities
that the Lord overthrew without pity;
(AM)let him hear a cry in the morning
and an alarm at noon,
17 (AN)because he did not kill me in the womb;
so my mother would have been my grave,
and her womb forever great.
18 (AO)Why did I come out from the womb
(AP)to see toil and sorrow,
and spend my days in shame?
