The People Continue to Reject the Lord’s Love for Them
2 Yahweh spoke his word to me,
2 “Go and announce to Jerusalem,
‘This is what Yahweh says:
I remember the unfailing loyalty of your youth,
the love you had for me as a bride.
I remember how you followed me into the desert,
into a land that couldn’t be farmed.
3 Israel was set apart for Yahweh.
It was the best part of the harvest.
All who devoured it became guilty,
and disaster struck them,’” declares Yahweh.
4 Listen to the word of Yahweh, descendants of Jacob,
all the families in the nation of Israel.
5 This is what Yahweh says:
What did your ancestors find wrong with me
that they went so far away from me?
They followed worthless idols and became worthless themselves.
6 They didn’t ask, “Where is Yahweh,
who brought us from Egypt?
He led us through the desert,
through a wasteland and its pits,
a land of drought and the shadow of death.
No one lives there or travels there.”
7 I brought them into a fertile land
to eat its fruit and its produce.
They came and made my land unclean.[a]
They made my property disgusting.
8 The priests didn’t ask, “Where is Yahweh?”
Those who deal with my teachings didn’t know me.
The rulers rebelled against me.
The prophets prophesied in the name of Baal
and followed statues that couldn’t help them.
9 “That is why I am bringing charges against you,” declares Yahweh,
“and I am bringing charges against your grandchildren.
10 Go over to the coasts of Cyprus, and see.
Send someone to Kedar, and observe closely.
See if there has ever been anything like this.
11 Has any nation ever exchanged gods?
(Their gods aren’t really gods.)
Yet, my people have exchanged their Glory
for something that doesn’t help them.
12 Be horrified over this, heaven.
Be terribly afraid,” declares Yahweh.
13 “My people have done two things wrong.
They have abandoned me,
the fountain of life-giving water.
They have also dug their own cisterns,
broken cisterns that can’t hold water.
14 “Are the people of Israel slaves?
Were they born into slavery?
Why, then, have they become someone’s property?
15 Young lions have roared very loudly at them.
Young lions have turned the land into a wasteland.
The cities have been burned down, and everyone has left.
16 People from Noph and Tahpanhes have cracked your skulls, Israel.
17 You have brought this on yourself
by abandoning Yahweh your Elohim
when he led you on his way.
18 You won’t gain anything by going to Egypt
to drink water from the Nile River.
You won’t gain anything by going to Assyria
to drink water from the Euphrates River.
19 Your own wickedness will correct you,
and your unfaithful ways will punish you.
You should know and see how evil and bitter it is for you
if you abandon Yahweh your Elohim and do not fear me,”
declares Adonay Yahweh Tsebaoth.
20 “Long ago you broke off your yoke,[b] tore off your chains,
and said that you wouldn’t be a slave.
You lay down and acted like a prostitute
on every high hill and under every large tree.
21 I planted you like a choice grapevine from the very best seed.
Now you have turned against me and have become a wild vine.
22 Even if you wash with detergent and use a lot of soap,
I would still see the stains from your wickedness,”
declares Adonay Yahweh.
23 “How can you say that you haven’t dishonored yourselves
and haven’t followed other gods—the Baals?
Look how you’ve behaved in the valley.
Acknowledge what you’ve done.
You are like a young camel that swiftly runs here and there.
24 You are like a wild donkey that is used to the desert,
sniffing the wind while in heat.
All who look for you won’t get tired.
They will find you during your monthly period.
25 Don’t run until your feet are bare and your throats are dry.
But you say that it’s useless.
You love foreign gods and follow them.
26 “As a thief feels ashamed when he’s caught,
so the nation of Israel will feel ashamed.
Their kings, princes, priests,
and prophets will also feel ashamed.
27 You call wood your father.
You call stone your mother.
You’ve turned your backs, not your faces, to me.
But when you’re in trouble, you ask me to come and rescue you.
28 Where are the gods that you made for yourselves?
Let them come and rescue you when you’re in trouble.
You have as many gods as you have cities, Judah!
29 “Why do you complain about me?
All of you have rebelled against me,” declares Yahweh.
30 “I have punished your children without results.
They didn’t respond to correction.
You killed my prophets like a raging lion.
31 “Consider the word of Yahweh, people of this generation.
Haven’t I been a desert, a land of thick darkness, for Israel?
Why do my people say that they are free to wander around
and no longer come to me?
32 A young woman can’t forget her jewelry or a bride her veils.
Yet, my people have forgotten me for countless days.
33 You carefully planned ways to look for love.
You taught your ways to wicked women.
34 You have the blood from poor and innocent people
on your clothes.
You didn’t kill them for breaking into your home.
35 In spite of all this you say, ‘I’m innocent.
Yahweh will turn his anger from me,
because I haven’t sinned.’
36 You change your mind so easily.
You will be put to shame by Egypt
as you were put to shame by Assyria.
37 You will also leave this place with your hands over your head,
because Yahweh has rejected those you trust.
You will not be helped by them.”

2 El Señor se dirigió a mí, y me dijo:
2 «Ve y habla a la ciudad de Jerusalén;
grita para que lo oiga bien:
“¡Así dice el Señor!
Recuerdo que cuando eras joven, me eras fiel,
que cuando te hice mi esposa, me amabas
y me seguiste a través del desierto,
tierra en que nada se cultiva.”
3 Israel estaba consagrada a mí,
era lo mejor de mi cosecha.
Si alguien le hacía daño, yo lo castigaba
enviándole calamidades.
Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.»
4 Descendientes de Jacob, familias todas de Israel, escuchen la palabra del Señor. 5 El Señor les dice:
«¿Qué de malo encontraron en mí sus antepasados,
que se alejaron de mí?
Se fueron tras dioses que no son nada,
y en nada se convirtieron ellos mismos.
6 No se preocuparon por buscarme a mí,
que los saqué de Egipto,
que los guié por el desierto,
tierra seca y llena de barrancos,
tierra sin agua, llena de peligros,
tierra donde nadie vive, por donde nadie pasa.
7 Yo los traje a esta tierra fértil,
para que comieran de sus frutos
y de sus mejores productos.
Pero ustedes vinieron y profanaron mi tierra,
me hicieron sentir asco de este país,
de mi propiedad.
8 Los sacerdotes no me buscaron,
los instructores de mi pueblo no me reconocieron,
los jefes se rebelaron contra mí,
y los profetas hablaron en nombre de Baal
y se fueron tras ídolos que no sirven para nada.
Proceso contra Israel
9 »Por eso, yo, el Señor, afirmo:
Voy a entablar un proceso contra ustedes y sus nietos.
10 Vayan a las islas de occidente y observen;
envíen a alguien a Quedar para que se fije bien,
a ver si se ha dado el caso
11 de que una nación pagana haya cambiado a sus dioses.
¡Y eso que son dioses falsos!
Pero mi pueblo me ha dejado a mí, que soy su gloria,
por ídolos que no sirven para nada.
12 ¡Espántate, cielo, ante esto!
¡Ponte a temblar de horror!
Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.
13 »Mi pueblo ha cometido un doble pecado:
me abandonaron a mí,
fuente de agua viva,
y se hicieron sus propias cisternas,
pozos rotos que no conservan el agua.
Consecuencias de la infidelidad de Israel
14 »Israel no es un esclavo;
él no nació en la esclavitud.
¿Por qué, pues, lo saquean?
15 ¿Por qué lo atacan como leones,
lanzando fuertes rugidos?
Han dejado en ruinas su país;
sus ciudades fueron incendiadas
y nadie quedó en ellas.
16 La gente de Menfis y de Tafnes
te rompió la cabeza.
17 Esto te ha pasado por haberme abandonado
a mí, que soy el Señor tu Dios
y que te guiaba por el camino.
18 Y ahora, ¿qué ganas con ir a Egipto
a beber agua del Nilo?
¿Qué ganas con ir a Asiria
a beber agua del Éufrates?
19 Tu propia maldad te castigará,
tu infidelidad te condenará.
Piensa y verás lo malo y amargo
que ha sido que me abandones
y que no me hayas honrado,
a mí, que soy el Señor tu Dios.
Yo, el Señor todopoderoso, lo afirmo.
Rebeldía de Israel
20 »Desde hace mucho te rebelaste contra mí,
te negaste a obedecerme.
Dijiste: “No quiero servir.”
Sobre toda loma alta
y bajo todo árbol frondoso
te dedicaste a la prostitución.
21 Yo te planté como vid de la mejor calidad,
como vid de la semilla más fina.
¡Pero te has degenerado tanto,
que ya ni te reconozco!
22 Por más que te laves con lejía
y uses todo el jabón que quieras,
ante mí sigue presente la mancha de tu pecado.
Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.
23 ¿Cómo puedes decir: “No me he manchado
ni he dado culto a dioses falsos”?
Mira cuál fue tu conducta en el valle,
fíjate en todo lo que has hecho
tú, camella ligera de cascos
que corre en todas direcciones;
24 asna salvaje que tira al monte
y resopla jadeante de deseos.
Cuando está en celo, nadie puede controlarla.
Si un macho la busca, no tiene que cansarse:
siempre la encuentra en época de celo.
25 »¡Israel, no lastimes tus pies corriendo descalza,
no dejes que se te seque la garganta!
Pero tú dijiste: “No, imposible;
amo a los extraños y me voy con ellos.”
Israel merece castigo
26 »Como el ladrón se avergüenza cuando lo descubren,
así quedará avergonzado Israel,
el pueblo, los reyes, los jefes,
los sacerdotes y los profetas;
27 pues a un árbol le dicen: “Tú eres mi padre”,
y a una piedra: “Tú eres mi madre.”
A mí, en cambio, me dan la espalda y no la cara.
Sin embargo, apenas se ven en peligro, me dicen:
“¡Ven a salvarnos!”
28 Judá, ¿dónde están los dioses que te hiciste?
¡Tienes tantos dioses como ciudades!
¡Pues que vengan ellos, a ver si pueden salvarte
cuando te llegue la desgracia!
29 ¿Qué alegan ustedes en mi contra,
si todos ustedes me han sido rebeldes?
Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.
30 En vano castigué a los hijos de ustedes,
pues no quisieron aprender la lección.
Ustedes mismos, como leones feroces,
asesinaron a sus profetas.
31 (También ustedes, los de la generación actual,
presten atención al mensaje del Señor.)
Israel, ¿acaso he sido un desierto para ti?,
¿una tierra llena de sombras?
Pueblo mío, ¿por qué dices:
“Somos libres; nunca más volveremos a ti”?
32 ¿Puede olvidarse una mujer
de sus joyas y adornos de novia?
Mi pueblo, sin embargo,
hace mucho que se olvidó de mí.
33 »¡Qué bien conoces el camino
cuando de buscar amantes se trata!
¡Eres maestra en la escuela del mal!
34 Tienes la ropa toda manchada
de sangre de pobres e inocentes,
de gente que no sorprendiste en ningún delito.
35 Pero a pesar de todo dices:
“Soy inocente. Dios ya no está enojado conmigo.”
Pues bien, ya que dices que no has pecado,
te voy a entablar un juicio.
36 ¿Por qué tienes tanta prisa por cambiar de aliados?
También Egipto te va a fallar,
como ya te ha fallado Asiria.
37 Y tendrás que regresar de Egipto
llena de vergüenza,
porque yo he rechazado a los que te inspiran confianza,
y nada vas a ganar con su amistad.»
