Jeremiah 18

New International Version

At the Potter’s House

18 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: ²“Go down to the potter’s house, and there I will give you my message.” ³So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel. ⁴But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.

⁵Then the word of the Lord came to me. ⁶He said, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the Lord. “Like clay^(A) in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand,^(B) Israel. ⁷If at any time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be uprooted,^(C) torn down and destroyed, ⁸and if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent^(D) and not inflict on it the disaster^(E) I had planned. ⁹And if at another time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be built^(F) up and planted, ¹⁰and if it does evil^(G) in my sight and does not obey me, then I will reconsider^(H) the good I had intended to do for it.^(I)

¹¹“Now therefore say to the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem, ‘This is what the Lord says: Look! I am preparing a disaster^(J) for you and devising a plan^(K) against you. So turn^(L) from your evil ways,^(M) each one of you, and reform your ways and your actions.’^(N) ¹²But they will reply, ‘It’s no use.^(O) We will continue with our own plans; we will all follow the stubbornness of our evil hearts.^(P)’”

¹³Therefore this is what the Lord says:

“Inquire among the nations:
    Who has ever heard anything like this?^(Q)
A most horrible^(R) thing has been done
    by Virgin^(S) Israel.
¹⁴Does the snow of Lebanon
    ever vanish from its rocky slopes?
Do its cool waters from distant sources
    ever stop flowing?^[a]
¹⁵Yet my people have forgotten^(T) me;
    they burn incense^(U) to worthless idols,^(V)
which made them stumble^(W) in their ways,
    in the ancient paths.^(X)
They made them walk in byways,
    on roads not built up.^(Y)
¹⁶Their land will be an object of horror^(Z)
    and of lasting scorn;^(AA)
all who pass by will be appalled^(AB)
    and will shake their heads.^(AC)
¹⁷Like a wind^(AD) from the east,
    I will scatter them before their enemies;
I will show them my back and not my face^(AE)
    in the day of their disaster.”

¹⁸They said, “Come, let’s make plans^(AF) against Jeremiah; for the teaching of the law by the priest^(AG) will not cease, nor will counsel from the wise,^(AH) nor the word from the prophets.^(AI) So come, let’s attack him with our tongues^(AJ) and pay no attention to anything he says.”

¹⁹Listen to me, Lord;
    hear what my accusers^(AK) are saying!
²⁰Should good be repaid with evil?^(AL)
    Yet they have dug a pit^(AM) for me.
Remember that I stood^(AN) before you
    and spoke in their behalf^(AO)
    to turn your wrath away from them.
²¹So give their children over to famine;^(AP)
    hand them over to the power of the sword.^(AQ)
Let their wives be made childless and widows;^(AR)
    let their men be put to death,
    their young men^(AS) slain by the sword in battle.
²²Let a cry^(AT) be heard from their houses
    when you suddenly bring invaders against them,
for they have dug a pit^(AU) to capture me
    and have hidden snares^(AV) for my feet.
²³But you, Lord, know
    all their plots to kill^(AW) me.
Do not forgive^(AX) their crimes
    or blot out their sins from your sight.
Let them be overthrown before you;
    deal with them in the time of your anger.^(AY)

The Rekabites

35 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord during the reign of Jehoiakim^(A) son of Josiah king of Judah: ²“Go to the Rekabite^(B) family and invite them to come to one of the side rooms^(C) of the house of the Lord and give them wine to drink.”

³So I went to get Jaazaniah son of Jeremiah, the son of Habazziniah, and his brothers and all his sons—the whole family of the Rekabites. ⁴I brought them into the house of the Lord, into the room of the sons of Hanan son of Igdaliah the man of God.^(D) It was next to the room of the officials, which was over that of Maaseiah son of Shallum^(E) the doorkeeper.^(F) ⁵Then I set bowls full of wine and some cups before the Rekabites and said to them, “Drink some wine.”

⁶But they replied, “We do not drink wine, because our forefather Jehonadab^[a]^(G) son of Rekab gave us this command: ‘Neither you nor your descendants must ever drink wine.^(H) ⁷Also you must never build houses, sow seed or plant vineyards; you must never have any of these things, but must always live in tents.^(I) Then you will live a long time in the land^(J) where you are nomads.’ ⁸We have obeyed everything our forefather^(K) Jehonadab son of Rekab commanded us. Neither we nor our wives nor our sons and daughters have ever drunk wine ⁹or built houses to live in or had vineyards, fields or crops.^(L) ¹⁰We have lived in tents and have fully obeyed everything our forefather Jehonadab commanded us. ¹¹But when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon invaded^(M) this land, we said, ‘Come, we must go to Jerusalem^(N) to escape the Babylonian^[b] and Aramean armies.’ So we have remained in Jerusalem.”

¹²Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying: ¹³“This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Go and tell^(O) the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem, ‘Will you not learn a lesson^(P) and obey my words?’ declares the Lord. ¹⁴‘Jehonadab son of Rekab ordered his descendants not to drink wine and this command has been kept. To this day they do not drink wine, because they obey their forefather’s command.^(Q) But I have spoken to you again and again,^(R) yet you have not obeyed^(S) me. ¹⁵Again and again I sent all my servants the prophets^(T) to you. They said, “Each of you must turn^(U) from your wicked ways and reform^(V) your actions; do not follow other gods^(W) to serve them. Then you will live in the land^(X) I have given to you and your ancestors.” But you have not paid attention or listened^(Y) to me. ¹⁶The descendants of Jehonadab son of Rekab have carried out the command their forefather^(Z) gave them, but these people have not obeyed me.’

¹⁷“Therefore this is what the Lord God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘Listen! I am going to bring on Judah and on everyone living in Jerusalem every disaster^(AA) I pronounced against them. I spoke to them, but they did not listen;^(AB) I called to them, but they did not answer.’”^(AC)

¹⁸Then Jeremiah said to the family of the Rekabites, “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘You have obeyed the command of your forefather^(AD) Jehonadab and have followed all his instructions and have done everything he ordered.’ ¹⁹Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘Jehonadab son of Rekab will never fail^(AE) to have a descendant to serve^(AF) me.’”

A Message About Ammon

49 Concerning the Ammonites:^(A)

This is what the Lord says:

“Has Israel no sons?
    Has Israel no heir?
Why then has Molek^[a]^(B) taken possession of Gad?^(C)
    Why do his people live in its towns?
²But the days are coming,”
    declares the Lord,
“when I will sound the battle cry^(D)
    against Rabbah^(E) of the Ammonites;
it will become a mound of ruins,^(F)
    and its surrounding villages will be set on fire.
Then Israel will drive out
    those who drove her out,^(G)”
says the Lord.
³“Wail, Heshbon,^(H) for Ai^(I) is destroyed!
    Cry out, you inhabitants of Rabbah!
Put on sackcloth^(J) and mourn;
    rush here and there inside the walls,
for Molek^(K) will go into exile,^(L)
    together with his priests and officials.
⁴Why do you boast of your valleys,
    boast of your valleys so fruitful?
Unfaithful Daughter Ammon,^(M)
    you trust in your riches^(N) and say,
    ‘Who will attack me?’^(O)
⁵I will bring terror on you
    from all those around you,”
declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty.
“Every one of you will be driven away,
    and no one will gather the fugitives.^(P)

⁶“Yet afterward, I will restore^(Q) the fortunes of the Ammonites,”
declares the Lord.

A Message About Edom^(R)^(S)

⁷Concerning Edom:^(T)

This is what the Lord Almighty says:

“Is there no longer wisdom in Teman?^(U)
    Has counsel perished from the prudent?
    Has their wisdom decayed?
⁸Turn and flee, hide in deep caves,^(V)
    you who live in Dedan,^(W)
for I will bring disaster on Esau
    at the time when I punish him.
⁹If grape pickers came to you,
    would they not leave a few grapes?
If thieves came during the night,
    would they not steal only as much as they wanted?
¹⁰But I will strip Esau bare;
    I will uncover his hiding places,^(X)
    so that he cannot conceal himself.
His armed men are destroyed,
    also his allies and neighbors,
    so there is no one^(Y) to say,
¹¹‘Leave your fatherless children;^(Z) I will keep them alive.
    Your widows^(AA) too can depend on me.’”

¹²This is what the Lord says: “If those who do not deserve to drink the cup^(AB) must drink it, why should you go unpunished?^(AC) You will not go unpunished, but must drink it. ¹³I swear^(AD) by myself,” declares the Lord, “that Bozrah^(AE) will become a ruin and a curse,^[b] an object of horror^(AF) and reproach;^(AG) and all its towns will be in ruins forever.”^(AH)

¹⁴I have heard a message from the Lord;
an envoy was sent to the nations to say,
“Assemble yourselves to attack it!
Rise up for battle!”

¹⁵“Now I will make you small among the nations,
    despised by mankind.
¹⁶The terror you inspire
    and the pride^(AI) of your heart have deceived you,
you who live in the clefts of the rocks,^(AJ)
    who occupy the heights of the hill.
Though you build your nest^(AK) as high as the eagle’s,
    from there I will bring you down,”
declares the Lord.
¹⁷“Edom will become an object of horror;^(AL)
    all who pass by will be appalled and will scoff
    because of all its wounds.^(AM)
¹⁸As Sodom^(AN) and Gomorrah^(AO) were overthrown,
    along with their neighboring towns,”
says the Lord,
“so no one will live there;
    no people will dwell^(AP) in it.

¹⁹“Like a lion^(AQ) coming up from Jordan’s thickets^(AR)
    to a rich pastureland,
I will chase Edom from its land in an instant.
    Who is the chosen one I will appoint for this?
Who is like^(AS) me and who can challenge me?^(AT)
    And what shepherd^(AU) can stand against me?”

²⁰Therefore, hear what the Lord has planned against Edom,^(AV)
    what he has purposed^(AW) against those who live in Teman:^(AX)
The young of the flock^(AY) will be dragged away;
    their pasture will be appalled at their fate.^(AZ)
²¹At the sound of their fall the earth will tremble;^(BA)
    their cry^(BB) will resound to the Red Sea.^[c]
²²Look! An eagle will soar and swoop^(BC) down,
    spreading its wings over Bozrah.^(BD)
In that day the hearts of Edom’s warriors^(BE)
    will be like the heart of a woman in labor.^(BF)

A Message About Damascus

²³Concerning Damascus:^(BG)

“Hamath^(BH) and Arpad^(BI) are dismayed,
    for they have heard bad news.
They are disheartened,
    troubled like^[d] the restless sea.^(BJ)
²⁴Damascus has become feeble,
    she has turned to flee
    and panic has gripped her;
anguish and pain have seized her,
    pain like that of a woman in labor.^(BK)
²⁵Why has the city of renown not been abandoned,
    the town in which I delight?
²⁶Surely, her young men^(BL) will fall in the streets;
    all her soldiers will be silenced^(BM) in that day,”
declares the Lord Almighty.
²⁷“I will set fire^(BN) to the walls of Damascus;^(BO)
    it will consume^(BP) the fortresses of Ben-Hadad.^(BQ)”

A Message About Kedar and Hazor

²⁸Concerning Kedar^(BR) and the kingdoms of Hazor,^(BS) which Nebuchadnezzar^(BT) king of Babylon attacked:

This is what the Lord says:

“Arise, and attack Kedar
    and destroy the people of the East.^(BU)
²⁹Their tents and their flocks^(BV) will be taken;
    their shelters will be carried off
    with all their goods and camels.
People will shout to them,
    ‘Terror^(BW) on every side!’

³⁰“Flee quickly away!
Stay in deep caves,^(BX) you who live in Hazor,^(BY)”
declares the Lord.
“Nebuchadnezzar^(BZ) king of Babylon has plotted against you;
he has devised a plan against you.

³¹“Arise and attack a nation at ease,
    which lives in confidence,”
declares the Lord,
“a nation that has neither gates nor bars;^(CA)
    its people live far from danger.
³²Their camels^(CB) will become plunder,
    and their large herds^(CC) will be spoils of war.
I will scatter to the winds^(CD) those who are in distant places^[e]^(CE)
    and will bring disaster on them from every side,”
declares the Lord.
³³“Hazor^(CF) will become a haunt of jackals,^(CG)
    a desolate^(CH) place forever.
No one will live there;
    no people will dwell^(CI) in it.”
