Drought and a Prayer for Mercy

14 That which came as the word of the Lord to Jeremiah regarding the (A)drought:

“Judah mourns
And (B)her gates languish;
Her people sit on the ground (C)in mourning garments,
And the (D)cry of Jerusalem has ascended.
Their nobles have (E)sent their [a]servants for water;
They have come to the (F)cisterns and found no water.
They have returned with their containers empty;
They have been (G)put to shame and humiliated,
And they (H)cover their heads,
Because the (I)ground is [b]cracked,
For there has been (J)no rain on the land.
The (K)farmers have been put to shame,
They have covered their heads.
For even the doe in the field has given birth only to abandon her young,
Because there is (L)no grass.
The (M)wild donkeys stand on the bare heights;
They pant for air like jackals,
Their eyes fail
Because there is (N)no vegetation.
Though our (O)wrongdoings testify against us,
Lord, act (P)for the sake of Your name!
Our (Q)apostasies have indeed been many,
We have (R)sinned against You.
(S)Hope of Israel,
Its (T)Savior in (U)time of distress,
Why are You like a stranger in the land,
Or like a traveler who has pitched his tent for the night?
Why are You like a confused person,
Like a warrior who (V)cannot save?
Yet (W)You are in our midst, Lord,
And we are (X)called by Your name;
Do not leave us!”

10 This is what the Lord says to this people: “So much they have (Y)loved to wander; they have not (Z)restrained their feet. Therefore the Lord does (AA)not accept them; now He will (AB)remember their wrongdoing and call their sins to account.” 11 So the Lord said to me, “(AC)Do not pray for a good outcome on behalf of this people. 12 When they fast, I am (AD)not going to listen to their cry; and when they offer (AE)burnt offering and grain offering, I am not going to accept them. Rather, I am going to (AF)put an end to them by the (AG)sword, famine, and plague.”

False Prophets

13 But I said, “Oh, Lord [c]God! Behold, the prophets are telling them, ‘You (AH)will not see a sword, nor will you have famine; on the contrary, I will give you lasting (AI)peace in this place.’” 14 Then the Lord said to me, “The (AJ)prophets are prophesying falsehood in My name. (AK)I have neither sent them nor commanded them, nor spoken to them; they are prophesying to you a (AL)false vision, divination, futility, and the deception of their own [d]minds. 15 Therefore this is what the Lord says concerning the prophets who are prophesying in My name, although it was not I who sent them—yet they keep saying: ‘There will be no sword or famine in this land’—(AM)by sword and famine those prophets shall meet their end! 16 And the people to whom they are prophesying will be (AN)thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and there will be no one to (AO)bury them—neither them, nor their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters. For I will (AP)pour out their own wickedness upon them.

17 You will say this word to them,
(AQ)Let my eyes stream down tears night and day,
And let them not cease;
For the virgin (AR)daughter of my people has been crushed with a mighty blow,
With a sorely (AS)infected wound.
18 If I (AT)go out to the country,
There are those killed by the sword!
Or if I enter the city,
There are diseases from famine!
For (AU)both prophet and priest
Have wandered around in the land that they do not know.’”

19 Have You completely (AV)rejected Judah?
Or have [e]You loathed Zion?
Why have You stricken us so that we (AW)are beyond healing?
We (AX)waited for peace, but nothing good came;
And for a time of healing, but behold, terror!
20 We (AY)know our wickedness, Lord,
The wrongdoing of our fathers, for (AZ)we have sinned against You.
21 Do not despise us, (BA)for the sake of Your own name;
Do not disgrace the (BB)throne of Your glory.
Remember and do not annul Your covenant with us.
22 Are there any among the [f](BC)idols of the nations who (BD)give rain?
Or can the heavens grant showers?
Is it not You, Lord our God?
Therefore we (BE)wait for You,
For You are the one who has done all these things.

Yahweh Will Not Listen to Their Cry

14 That which came as the word of Yahweh to Jeremiah in regard to the (A)drought:

“Judah mourns,
And (B)her gates languish;
They sit on the ground (C)in mourning,
And the (D)outcry of Jerusalem has gone up.
Their mighty ones have (E)sent their [a]underlings for water;
They have come to the (F)trenches and found no water.
They have returned with their vessels empty;
They have been (G)put to shame and dishonored,
And they (H)cover their heads.
Because the (I)ground is [b]dismayed,
For there has been (J)no rain on the land,
The (K)farmers have been put to shame;
They have covered their heads.
For even the doe in the field has given birth only to forsake her young
Because there is (L)no grass.
The (M)wild donkeys stand on the bare heights;
They pant for air like jackals;
Their eyes fail
For there is (N)no vegetation.
Although our (O)iniquities answer against us,
O Yahweh, act (P)for Your name’s sake!
Truly our (Q)acts of faithlessness have been many;
We have (R)sinned against You.
O (S)Hope of Israel,
Its (T)Savior in (U)time of distress,
Why are You like a sojourner in the land
Or like a traveler who has pitched his tent to lodge for the night?
Why are You like a man confused,
Like a mighty man who (V)cannot save?
Yet (W)You are in our midst, O Yahweh,
And we are (X)called by Your name;
Do not leave us!”

10 Thus says Yahweh to this people, “Even so they have (Y)loved to wander; they have not (Z)kept their feet in check. Therefore Yahweh does (AA)not accept them; now He will (AB)remember their iniquity and punish their sins.” 11 So Yahweh said to me, “(AC)Do not pray for the good of this people. 12 When they fast, I am (AD)not going to listen to their cry; and when they offer (AE)burnt offering and grain offering, I am not going to accept them. Rather I am going to (AF)make an end of them by the (AG)sword, famine, and pestilence.”

Lying Prophets

13 But, “Ah, Lord Yahweh!” I said, “Behold, the prophets are saying to them, ‘You (AH)will not see the sword nor will you have famine, but I will give you true (AI)peace in this place.’” 14 Then Yahweh said to me, “The (AJ)prophets are prophesying lies in My name. (AK)I have neither sent them nor commanded them nor spoken to them; they are prophesying to you a (AL)vision of lies, divination, futility, and the deception of their own hearts. 15 Therefore thus says Yahweh concerning the prophets who are prophesying in My name, although it was not I who sent them—yet they keep saying, ‘There will be no sword or famine in this land’—(AM)by that sword and famine those prophets shall [c]meet their end! 16 The people also to whom they are prophesying will be (AN)thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and there will be no one to (AO)bury them—neither them, nor their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters—for I will (AP)pour out their own evil on them.

17 And you will say this word to them,
(AQ)Let my eyes flow down with tears night and day,
And let them not cease,
For the virgin (AR)daughter of my people has been shattered with a mighty shattering,
With a sorely (AS)sick wound.
18 If I (AT)go out to the field,
Behold, those [d]slain with the sword!
Or if I enter the city,
Behold, diseases of famine!
For (AU)both prophet and priest
Have gone around as merchants in the land that they do not know.’”

19 Have You completely (AV)rejected Judah?
Or [e]have You loathed Zion?
Why have You stricken us so that (AW)there is no healing for us?
We (AX)hoped for peace, but there was no good;
And for a time of healing, but behold, terror!
20 We (AY)know our wickedness, O Yahweh,
The iniquity of our fathers, for (AZ)we have sinned against You.
21 Do not [f]despise us, (BA)for Your own name’s sake;
Do not disgrace the (BB)throne of Your glory;
Remember and do not break Your covenant with us.
22 Are there any among the [g](BC)idols of the nations who (BD)give rain?
Or can the heavens give showers?
Is it not You, O Yahweh our God?
Therefore we [h](BE)hope in You,
For You are the one who has done all these things.

14 The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought:

Judah mourns and her gates languish; [her people] sit in black [mourning garb] upon the ground, and the cry of Jerusalem goes up.

And their nobles send their little ones and their inferiors for water; they come to the cisterns and find no water. They return with empty vessels; they are put to shame and confounded and cover their heads.

Because the ground is cracked and the tillers are dismayed, since there has been no rain on the land, the plowmen are put to shame, and they cover their heads.

Yes, even the hind gives birth to her calf in the field and forsakes it, because there is no grass or herbage.

And the wild donkeys stand on the bare heights; they pant for air like jackals or crocodiles; their eyesight fails because there is no grass.

O Lord, though our iniquities testify against us [prays Jeremiah], deal and work with us for Your own name’s sake [that the heathen may witness Your might and faithfulness]! For our backslidings are many; we have sinned against You.

O Hope of Israel, her Savior in time of trouble, why should You be like a sojourner in the land and like a wayfaring man who turns aside and spreads his tent to tarry [only] for a night?

Why should You be [hesitant and inactive] like a man stunned and confused, like a mighty man who cannot save? Yet You, O Lord, are in the midst of us, and we are called by Your name; do not leave us!

10 [And the Lord replied to Jeremiah] Thus says the Lord to this people [Judah]: In the manner and to the degree already pointed out have they loved to wander; they have not restrained their feet. Therefore the Lord does not accept them; He will now [seriously] remember their iniquity and punish them for their sins.

11 The Lord said to me, Do not pray for this people for their good.

12 Though they fast, I will not hear their cry; and though they offer burnt offering and cereal offering [without heartfelt surrender to Me, or by offering it too late], I will not accept them. But I will consume them by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence.

13 Then said I, Alas, Lord God! Behold, the [false] prophets say to them, You will not see the sword, nor will you have famine; but I [the Lord] will give you assured peace (peace that lasts, the peace of truth) in this place.

14 Then the Lord said to me, The [false] prophets prophesy lies in My name. I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, nor have I spoken to them. They prophesy to you a false or pretended vision, a worthless divination [conjuring or practicing magic, trying to call forth the responses supposed to be given by idols], and the deceit of their own minds.

15 Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the [false] prophets who prophesy in My name—although I did not send them—and who say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land: By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed.

16 And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem, victims of famine and sword; and they shall have none to bury them—them, their wives, their sons, and their daughters. For I will pour out their wickedness upon them [and not on their false teachers only, for the people could not have been deceived except by their own consent].

17 Therefore [Jeremiah] you shall say to them, Let my eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease; for the virgin daughter of my people has been smitten with a great wound, with a very grievous blow.

18 If I go out into the field, then behold, those slain with the sword! And if I enter the city, then behold, those tormented with the diseases of famine! For both prophet and priest go about not knowing what to do or as beggars [exiled] in a land that they know not, and they have no knowledge.

19 [O Lord] have You utterly rejected Judah? Do You loathe Zion? Why have You smitten us so that there is no healing for us? We looked for peace and completeness, but no good came, and for a time of healing, but behold, dismay, disaster, and terror!

20 We know and acknowledge, O Lord, our wickedness and the iniquity of our fathers; for we have sinned against You.

21 Do not abhor, condemn, and spurn us, for Your name’s sake; do not dishonor, debase, and lightly esteem Your glorious throne; [earnestly] remember, break not Your covenant or solemn pledge with us.

22 Are there any among the false gods of the nations who can cause rain? Or can the heavens [of their own will] give showers? Are You [alone] not He, O Lord our God? Therefore we will wait [expectantly] for You, for You have made all these things [the heavens and the rain].
