¹¹ For as the loincloth clings to one’s loins, so I made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah cling to me, says the Lord, in order that they might be for me a people, a name, a praise, and a glory. But they would not listen.^(A)

⁹ And this city^[a] shall be to me a name of joy, a praise, and a glory before all the nations of the earth who shall hear of all the good that I do for them; they shall fear and tremble because of all the good and all the prosperity I provide for it.^(A)

⁵ Now, therefore, if you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession out of all the peoples. Indeed, the whole earth is mine,^{(A) 6} but you shall be for me a priestly kingdom and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the Israelites.”^(B)

⁹ But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people,^[a] in order that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.^(A)

³⁷ And the Father who sent me has himself testified on my behalf. You have never heard his voice or seen his form,^{(A) 38} and you do not have his word abiding in you, because you do not believe him whom he has sent.^(B)

³⁹ “You search the scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life, and it is they that testify on my behalf.^{(C) 40} Yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

²⁰ You showed signs and wonders in the land of Egypt and to this day in Israel and among all humankind and have made yourself a name that continues to this very day.^(A)

¹⁰ This evil people, who refuse to hear my words, who stubbornly follow their own will and have gone after other gods to serve them and worship them, shall be like this loincloth, which is good for nothing.^(A)

²⁶ yet they did not listen to me or pay attention, but they stiffened their necks. They did worse than their ancestors did.^(A)
