11 The word of the Lord came to me: “What do you see, Jeremiah?”(A)

“I see the branch of an almond tree,” I replied.

12 The Lord said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I am watching[a](B) to see that my word is fulfilled.”

13 The word of the Lord came to me again: “What do you see?”(C)

“I see a pot that is boiling,” I answered. “It is tilting toward us from the north.”

14 The Lord said to me, “From the north(D) disaster will be poured out on all who live in the land. 15 I am about to summon all the peoples of the northern kingdoms,” declares the Lord.

“Their kings will come and set up their thrones
    in the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem;
they will come against all her surrounding walls
    and against all the towns of Judah.(E)
16 I will pronounce my judgments(F) on my people
    because of their wickedness(G) in forsaking me,(H)
in burning incense to other gods(I)
    and in worshiping(J) what their hands have made.(K)

17 “Get yourself ready! Stand up and say(L) to them whatever I command you. Do not be terrified(M) by them, or I will terrify you before them. 18 Today I have made you(N) a fortified city, an iron pillar and a bronze wall to stand against the whole land—against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests and the people of the land. 19 They will fight against you but will not overcome(O) you, for I am with you(P) and will rescue(Q) you,” declares the Lord.

Footnotes

  1. Jeremiah 1:12 The Hebrew for watching sounds like the Hebrew for almond tree.

I already gave you a warning when I was with you the second time. I now repeat it while absent:(A) On my return I will not spare(B) those who sinned earlier(C) or any of the others, since you are demanding proof that Christ is speaking through me.(D) He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you. For to be sure, he was crucified in weakness,(E) yet he lives by God’s power.(F) Likewise, we are weak(G) in him, yet by God’s power we will live with him(H) in our dealing with you.

Examine yourselves(I) to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves.(J) Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you(K)—unless, of course, you fail the test? And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test. Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong—not so that people will see that we have stood the test but so that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed. For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. We are glad whenever we are weak(L) but you are strong;(M) and our prayer is that you may be fully restored.(N)
