[a] Oh that my head were waters,[b]
and my eyes a fountain of tears,
so that I might weep day and night,
for the slain of the daughter of my people.
Oh that I had[c] in the desert a place of overnight lodging for travelers,
that I may leave my people and go from them,
for all of them are adulterers,
    a band of traitors.
And they bend their tongue like their bow,
for falsehood and not truth is superior in the land,
for they go forth[d] from evil to evil,
and they do not know me,” declares[e] Yahweh.

A Nation Characterized by Deceit

“Let everyone be on your guard against his neighbor,
and you must not trust in any brother,
for everyone surely betrays,
and every neighbor goes about with slander.
And everyone deceives his neighbor,
and they do not speak the truth,
they have taught their tongues[f] to speak lies,[g]
they are tired from going astray.
Your dwelling is in the midst of deceit,
upon[h] deceit they refuse to know me,” declares[i] Yahweh.

Therefore, thus says Yahweh of hosts:

“Look, I am about to refine them,
    and I will test them,
for what else can I do,
because of the presence[j] of the daughter of my people?
Their tongue is a murderous arrow,
    it speaks deceit.
With his mouth he speaks peace with his neighbor,
but in his inner parts he sets up his ambush.
Because of these things shall I not punish them?” declares[k] Yahweh,
“On a nation that is like this shall I not take revenge?
10 For the mountains I lift up weeping and wailing,
and for the pastures of the desert a lament,
because they are laid waste so that no man passes through.
And the sounds[l] of cattle are not heard,
from the birds[m] of heaven to the animals[n]
they have fled, they are gone.
11 And I will make Jerusalem as heaps of ruins, a lair of jackals,
and the towns of Judah I will make a desolation, without inhabitants.[o]
12 Who is the wise man that can understand this?
And to whom has the mouth of Yahweh spoken, so that he may declare it?
Why is the land destroyed?
It is laid waste like the desert[p] so that no one passes through.”

The Nation is Judged by Yahweh

13 And Yahweh said, “Because of their forsaking my law that I set before[q] them, and they have not obeyed my voice, and have not walked in it, 14 but they went after the stubbornness of their heart, and after the Baals, which their ancestors[r] taught them.” 15 Therefore thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, “Look, I am feeding this people wormwood, and providing drink for them, water of poison, 16 and I will scatter them among the nations that they have not known, they and their ancestors,[s] and I will send the sword after them until I bring them to an end.”

17 Thus says Yahweh of hosts:

“Consider closely, and call for the wailing women, so that they come,
and for the skillful women, so that they come.
18 And let them hasten,
and let them lift up wailing over us,
so that our eyes may melt with tears,
and our eyelids may flow with water.
19 For a sound of wailing is heard from Zion,
    ‘How we are devastated!
We are very ashamed because we have left the land,
because they have overthrown our dwelling places.’
20 For hear, O women, the word of Yahweh,
and let your ear receive the word of his mouth,
and teach your daughters a lamentation,
and each woman her neighbor a lament.
21 For death has come into our windows,
it has entered into our fortresses,
to cut off the children[t] from the streets,[u]
the young men from the public squares.

22 Speak, ‘thus declares[v] Yahweh:

“The dead body of the human will fall
like dung upon the surface of the field,
and like cut grain behind the reaper,
and there is no one who gathers.”’”

The Things in Which Yahweh Delights

23 Thus says Yahweh,

The wise man must not boast in his wisdom,
and the warrior must not boast in his might,
the wealthy man must not boast in his wealth.
24 But only[w] in this must the one who boasts boast,
    that he has insight,
and that he knows me,
    that I am Yahweh,
showing loyal love, justice, and righteousness on the earth,
for in these things I delight,” declares[x] Yahweh.

The Way of the Nations

25 “Look, days are coming,” declares[y] Yahweh, “and I will call into account all those who are circumcised in the foreskin: 26 Egypt, Judah, and Edom, and the Ammonites,[z] and Moab, and all those who are trimmed to the side, those who live in the desert,[aa] for all the nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised of heart.”

The Lord’s Sorrow for His People

[a]“Oh, that my head were a spring of water,[b]
and my eyes a fountain of tears,
for then I would cry day and night for those
of my people[c] who have been killed.
Oh, that I had a lodging place for travelers in the desert,
so that I could leave my people
        and go away from them.
For all of them are adulterers,
    a band of traitors.
They use their tongues like a bow.
Lies rather than truth fly throughout[d] the land.
They progress from one evil to another,
    and they don’t know me,”
        declares the Lord.
“Beware of your neighbors, and don’t trust
    any of your relatives.
For all of your relatives act deceitfully,
and every friend goes around as a slanderer.
People deceive their friends,
and they don’t tell the truth.
They have taught their tongues to tell lies.
    They exhaust themselves practicing evil.[e]
You yourself live in the midst of deception,
and because they are deceived they do not know me,”
        declares the Lord.
Therefore, this is what the Lord of the Heavenly Armies says:
“Look, I’m about to refine and test them.
Because they’re my people, what else can I do?[f]
Their tongue is a deadly arrow
    that speaks deceit.
With his mouth a person says, ‘Peace,’ to his friend,
but inwardly he sets a trap for him.
Should I not punish them for these things?”[g]
    asks the Lord,
“and should I not avenge myself on a nation like this?”
10 I’ll weep and mourn for the mountains,
and lament for the desert pastures,
because they are desolate and no one passes through them.
They don’t hear the lowing of the cattle.
Both the birds of the sky and the animals have fled.
    They’re gone!
11 “I’ll make Jerusalem a heap of ruins,
    a refuge for jackals.
I’ll make the towns of Judah desolate,
    without inhabitants.”

The Reason for Judgment

12 Who is the wise person who understands this, and to whom has the Lord[h] spoken so that he may declare it? Why is the land destroyed, ruined like the desert, without anyone passing through it? 13 The Lord said, “It is because they have forsaken my Law that I gave them. They didn’t obey me and didn’t live according to it. 14 Instead, they followed their rebellious hearts and the Baals,[i] as their ancestors taught them.”

15 Therefore, this is what the Lord of the Heavenly Armies, the God of Israel, says: “Look, I’ll make these people eat wormwood[j] and drink poisoned water. 16 I’ll scatter them among nations that neither they nor their ancestors have known, and I’ll pursue them with the sword until I’ve finished them off.”

A Call to Lament

17 This is what the Lord of the Heavenly Armies says:

“Think about what I’m saying![k]
Indeed, call out the professional mourners![l]
Send for the best of them to come.
18 Let them hurry and lament for us.
Let tears run down from our eyes,
and let our eyelids flow with water.
19 For a sound of mourning is heard from Zion:
    ‘How we’re ruined!
Our shame is very great,
because we have left the land,
because our houses are torn down.’”

20 “Now, you women, hear the message from the Lord;
listen to what he has to say!
Teach your daughters how to mourn,
let every woman teach[m] her friend how to lament.
21 For death comes up through our windows;
it has come into our palaces
to eliminate children from the streets
and young men from the town squares.

22 Speak! ‘This is what the Lord says:
“The corpses of people will fall like dung
on the surface of the field,
and like a row of cut grain behind
the harvester when there is no one to gather it.”’”

True Wisdom and the Coming Judgment

23 This is what the Lord says: “The wise man is not to boast in his wisdom; the strong man is not to boast in his strength; and the rich man is not to boast in his riches. 24 Rather, let the one who boasts, boast in this: that he understands and knows me, for I am the Lord who acts with gracious love, justice, and righteousness in the land. I delight in these things,” declares the Lord.

25 “Look, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I’ll punish all who are circumcised only in the flesh:[n] 26 Egypt, Judah, Edom, the people of Ammon, Moab, all those who live in the desert and shave the corners of their beard;[o] indeed all the other[p] nations that are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel that is uncircumcised of heart.”
