[a] Oh that my head were waters,[b]
    and my eyes a fountain of tears,
so that I might weep day and night,
    for the slain of the daughter of my people.
Oh that I had[c] in the desert a place of overnight lodging for travelers,
    that I may leave my people and go from them,
for all of them are adulterers,
    a band of traitors.
And they bend their tongue like their bow,
    for falsehood and not truth is superior in the land,
for they go forth[d] from evil to evil,
    and they do not know me,” declares[e] Yahweh.

A Nation Characterized by Deceit

“Let everyone be on your guard against his neighbor,
    and you must not trust in any brother,
for everyone surely betrays,
    and every neighbor goes about with slander.
And everyone deceives his neighbor,
    and they do not speak the truth,
they have taught their tongues[f] to speak lies,[g]
    they are tired from going astray.
Your dwelling is in the midst of deceit,
    upon[h] deceit they refuse to know me,” declares[i] Yahweh.

Therefore, thus says Yahweh of hosts:

“Look, I am about to refine them,
    and I will test them,
for what else can I do,
    because of the presence[j] of the daughter of my people?
Their tongue is a murderous arrow,
    it speaks deceit.
With his mouth he speaks peace with his neighbor,
    but in his inner parts he sets up his ambush.
Because of these things shall I not punish them?” declares[k] Yahweh,
“On a nation that is like this shall I not take revenge?
10 For the mountains I lift up weeping and wailing,
    and for the pastures of the desert a lament,
because they are laid waste so that no man passes through.
    And the sounds[l] of cattle are not heard,
from the birds[m] of heaven to the animals[n]
    they have fled, they are gone.
11 And I will make Jerusalem as heaps of ruins, a lair of jackals,
    and the towns of Judah I will make a desolation, without inhabitants.[o]
12 Who is the wise man that can understand this?
    And to whom has the mouth of Yahweh spoken, so that he may declare it?
Why is the land destroyed?
    It is laid waste like the desert[p] so that no one passes through.”

The Nation is Judged by Yahweh

13 And Yahweh said, “Because of their forsaking my law that I set before[q] them, and they have not obeyed my voice, and have not walked in it, 14 but they went after the stubbornness of their heart, and after the Baals, which their ancestors[r] taught them.” 15 Therefore thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, “Look, I am feeding this people wormwood, and providing drink for them, water of poison, 16 and I will scatter them among the nations that they have not known, they and their ancestors,[s] and I will send the sword after them until I bring them to an end.”

17 Thus says Yahweh of hosts:

“Consider closely, and call for the wailing women, so that they come,
    and for the skillful women, so that they come.
18 And let them hasten,
    and let them lift up wailing over us,
so that our eyes may melt with tears,
    and our eyelids may flow with water.
19 For a sound of wailing is heard from Zion,
    ‘How we are devastated!
We are very ashamed because we have left the land,
    because they have overthrown our dwelling places.’
20 For hear, O women, the word of Yahweh,
    and let your ear receive the word of his mouth,
and teach your daughters a lamentation,
    and each woman her neighbor a lament.
21 For death has come into our windows,
    it has entered into our fortresses,
to cut off the children[t] from the streets,[u]
    the young men from the public squares.

22 Speak, ‘thus declares[v] Yahweh:

“The dead body of the human will fall
    like dung upon the surface of the field,
and like cut grain behind the reaper,
    and there is no one who gathers.”’”

The Things in Which Yahweh Delights

23 Thus says Yahweh,

The wise man must not boast in his wisdom,
    and the warrior must not boast in his might,
the wealthy man must not boast in his wealth.
24 But only[w] in this must the one who boasts boast,
    that he has insight,
and that he knows me,
    that I am Yahweh,
showing loyal love, justice, and righteousness on the earth,
    for in these things I delight,” declares[x] Yahweh.

The Way of the Nations

25 “Look, days are coming,” declares[y] Yahweh, “and I will call into account all those who are circumcised in the foreskin: 26 Egypt, Judah, and Edom, and the Ammonites,[z] and Moab, and all those who are trimmed to the side, those who live in the desert,[aa] for all the nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised of heart.”

[a] If only my head were a spring of water,
    and my eyes a fountain of tears,
I would weep day and night
    for the wounds of my people.
[b] If only I could flee for shelter in the desert,
    to leave my people
        and forget them—
    for they are all adulterers,
        a bunch of crooks.
They bend their tongues like bows
        to spew out lies;
    they are renowned in the land,
        but not for truth.
They go from bad to worse.
    They don’t know me!
        declares the Lord.
Be wary of your friends!
    Don’t trust your sibling![c]
    Every sibling is a cheater,
        and every friend traffics in slander.
One cheats the other;
    no one tells the truth;
        they train themselves to lie;
        they wear themselves out by doing wrong.
You live in a world of deceit,
    and in their deceit
    they refuse to know me,[d]
        declares the Lord.
Therefore, the Lord of heavenly forces proclaims:
I’m going to refine and test them,
    for what else can I do with my people?
Their tongue is a lethal arrow;
    their words are deceitful.
They wish their neighbors well,
    but in their hearts plot their ruin.
Shouldn’t I punish them for this?
        declares the Lord;
    shouldn’t I avenge such a nation?
10 I will weep and wail for the mountains,
    and lament for the grazing lands in the wilderness.
They are dried up and deserted;
    no sound of the flocks is heard;
    no sign of birds or animals is seen;
        all have vanished.
11 I will reduce Jerusalem to ruins,
    a den for wild dogs.
I will make the towns of Judah a wasteland, without inhabitant.
12 Who is wise enough to understand this?
    Who has been taught by the Lord
    and can therefore explain it?
Why has the land been reduced to rubble
    and laid waste like a desert,
        with no one passing through?

13 The Lord says: It is because they have abandoned my Instruction that I gave them, and haven’t obeyed or followed it. 14 Instead, they have followed their own willful hearts and have gone after the Baals, as their ancestors taught them. 15 Therefore, this is what the Lord of heavenly forces, the God of Israel, says: I’m going to feed this people bitter food and give them poison to drink. 16 I will scatter them among nations about whom neither they nor their ancestors have ever heard. I will pursue them with the sword until all are gone.

17 The Lord of heavenly forces proclaims:
Pay attention!
Summon the women who mourn,
        let them come;
    send for those best trained,
        let them come.
18 Hurry!
Let them weep for us
    so that our eyes fill up with tears
        and water streams down.
19 The sound of sobbing
    is heard from Zion:
    “We’re devastated!
    We’re so ashamed!
    We have to leave the land
        and abandon our homes!”
20 Women, hear the Lord’s word.
    Listen closely to the word
    from his mouth:
        teach your daughters to mourn;
        teach each other to grieve.
21 Death has climbed through our windows;
    it has entered our fortresses
        to eliminate children from the streets,
        the youth from the squares.
22 Declare what the Lord says:
Dead bodies will lie
    like dung on the fields,
    like bundles of grain after the harvest,
        with no one to pick them up.
23 The Lord proclaims:
    the learned should not boast of their knowledge,
        nor warriors boast of their might,
        nor the rich boast of their wealth.
24 No, those who boast should boast in this:
    that they understand and know me.
I am the Lord who acts with kindness,
    justice, and righteousness in the world,
        and I delight in these things,
            declares the Lord.

25 The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will deal with everyone who is physically circumcised: 26 whether they are Egyptians or Judeans, Edomites or Ammonites, Moabites or the desert dwellers who cut the hair on their foreheads. All these nations are really uncircumcised; even the people of Israel are uncircumcised in heart.
