13 (A)“For from the least to the greatest of them,
    everyone (B)is greedy for unjust gain;
and from (C)prophet to priest,
    everyone deals falsely.
14 They have healed the wound of my people lightly,
    saying, (D)‘Peace, peace,’
    (E)when there is no peace.
15 (F)Were they ashamed when they committed abomination?
    No, they were not at all ashamed;
    they did not know how to blush.
Therefore they shall fall among those who fall;
    (G)at the time that I punish them, they shall be overthrown,”
says the Lord.

16 Thus says the Lord:
“Stand by the roads, and look,
    and ask for (H)the ancient paths,
where the good way is; and walk in it,
    (I)and find rest for your souls.
But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’
17 (J)I set watchmen over you, saying,
    ‘Pay attention to (K)the sound of the trumpet!’
But they said, (L)‘We will not pay attention.’
18 Therefore hear, O nations,
    and know, O congregation, what will happen to them.
19 Hear, O earth; behold, I am bringing disaster upon this people,
    (M)the fruit of their devices,
because they have not paid attention to my words;
    and as for my law, they have rejected it.
20 (N)What use to me is (O)frankincense that comes from (P)Sheba,
    or sweet cane from a distant land?
(Q)Your burnt offerings are not acceptable,
    nor your sacrifices pleasing to me.
21 Therefore thus says the Lord:
(R)‘Behold, I will lay before this people
    stumbling blocks against which they shall stumble;
fathers and sons together,
    neighbor and friend shall perish.’”

22 Thus says the Lord:
(S)“Behold, a people is coming (T)from the north country,
    a great nation is stirring from (U)the farthest parts of the earth.
23 They lay hold on bow and javelin;
    they are (V)cruel and have no mercy;
    (W)the sound of them is like the roaring sea;
they ride on horses,
    set in array as a man for battle,
    against you, O daughter of Zion!”

13 “From the least to the greatest,
    all(A) are greedy for gain;(B)
prophets and priests alike,
    all practice deceit.(C)
14 They dress the wound of my people
    as though it were not serious.
‘Peace, peace,’ they say,
    when there is no peace.(D)
15 Are they ashamed of their detestable conduct?
    No, they have no shame at all;
    they do not even know how to blush.(E)
So they will fall among the fallen;
    they will be brought down when I punish(F) them,”
says the Lord.

16 This is what the Lord says:

“Stand at the crossroads and look;
    ask for the ancient paths,(G)
ask where the good way(H) is, and walk in it,
    and you will find rest(I) for your souls.
    But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’
17 I appointed watchmen(J) over you and said,
    ‘Listen to the sound of the trumpet!’(K)
    But you said, ‘We will not listen.’(L)
18 Therefore hear, you nations;
    you who are witnesses,
    observe what will happen to them.
19 Hear, you earth:(M)
    I am bringing disaster(N) on this people,
    the fruit of their schemes,(O)
because they have not listened to my words(P)
    and have rejected my law.(Q)
20 What do I care about incense from Sheba(R)
    or sweet calamus(S) from a distant land?
Your burnt offerings are not acceptable;(T)
    your sacrifices(U) do not please me.”(V)

21 Therefore this is what the Lord says:

“I will put obstacles before this people.
    Parents and children alike will stumble(W) over them;
    neighbors and friends will perish.”

22 This is what the Lord says:

“Look, an army is coming
    from the land of the north;(X)
a great nation is being stirred up
    from the ends of the earth.(Y)
23 They are armed with bow and spear;
    they are cruel and show no mercy.(Z)
They sound like the roaring sea(AA)
    as they ride on their horses;(AB)
they come like men in battle formation
    to attack you, Daughter Zion.(AC)
