Chapter 45

A Message to Baruch.[a] The word that Jeremiah the prophet spoke to Baruch, son of Neriah, when he wrote on a scroll words from Jeremiah’s own mouth in the fourth year of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah:(A) Thus says the Lord, God of Israel, to you, Baruch. You said, “Woe is me! the Lord has added grief to my pain.(B) I have worn myself out with groaning; rest eludes me.” You must say this to him. Thus says the Lord: What I have built, I am tearing down; what I have planted, I am uprooting: all this land.(C) And you, do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them! I am bringing evil on all flesh—oracle of the Lord—but I will grant you your life as spoils of war, wherever you may go.(D)

Footnotes

  1. 45:1–5 At the conclusion of his narrative, Baruch appends a message Jeremiah had given him when he first wrote down Jeremiah’s words (cf. 36:4). The future revealed by the prophet overwhelmed Baruch; now he learns his own safety is assured, even though the Lord will destroy Judah.

A Word of Comfort to Baruch

45 The word that the prophet Jeremiah spoke to Baruch son of Neriah, when he wrote these words in a scroll at the dictation of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of King Jehoiakim son of Josiah of Judah: Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, to you, O Baruch: You said, “Woe is me! The Lord has added sorrow to my pain; I am weary with my groaning, and I find no rest.” Thus you shall say to him, “Thus says the Lord: I am going to break down what I have built, and pluck up what I have planted—that is, the whole land. And you, do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them; for I am going to bring disaster upon all flesh, says the Lord; but I will give you your life as a prize of war in every place to which you may go.”

A final word for Baruch

45 In the fourth year of Judah’s King Jehoiakim, Josiah’s son, Baruch was writing in a scroll the words that Jeremiah was dictating to him. Jeremiah the prophet told Baruch, Neriah’s son: This is what the Lord the God of Israel proclaims about you, Baruch: You have said, “I can’t take it anymore! The Lord has added sorrow to my pain. I’m worn out from groaning and can find no rest.” This is what you should say to him: “The Lord proclaims: I’m breaking down everything I have built up. I’m digging up that which I have planted—the entire land. You seek great things for yourself, but don’t bother. I’m bringing disaster on all humanity, declares the Lord, but wherever you go I will let you escape with your life.”

Message to Baruch

45 This is the message which Jeremiah the prophet spoke to (A)Baruch the son of Neriah, when he had (B)written these words in a book [a]at Jeremiah’s dictation, in the (C)fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying: “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says to you, Baruch: ‘You said, “Oh, woe to me! For the Lord has added grief to my pain; I am (D)weary with my groaning and have found no rest.”’ This is what you are to say to him: ‘This is what the Lord says: “Behold, (E)what I have built I am going to tear down, and what I have planted I am going to uproot, that is, all the people of the land.” But as for you, are you (F)seeking great things for yourself? Do not seek them; for behold, I am going to (G)bring disaster on all flesh,’ declares the Lord, ‘but I will (H)give your life to you as plunder in all the places where you may go.’”
