Have you forgotten the evil of your fathers, (A)the evil of the kings of Judah, (B)the evil of their[a] wives, your own evil, (C)and the evil of your wives, which they committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 10 They have not humbled themselves even to this day, (D)nor have they feared, nor walked in my law and my statutes that I set before you and before your fathers.

11 “Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (E)Behold, I will set my face against you for harm, to cut off all Judah. 12 I will take the remnant of Judah who have (F)set their faces to come to the land of Egypt to live, and they shall all be consumed. (G)In the land of Egypt they shall fall; by the sword and by famine (H)they shall be consumed. (I)From the least to the greatest, they shall die by the sword and by famine, (J)and they shall become an oath, a horror, (K)a curse, and a taunt. 13 (L)I will punish those who dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, with the sword, with famine, and with pestilence, 14 (M)so that none of the remnant of Judah who have come to live in the land of Egypt shall escape or survive (N)or return to the land of Judah, to which they desire to return to dwell there. For they shall not return, (O)except some fugitives.”

15 Then all the men who knew that (P)their wives had made offerings to other gods, and all the women who stood by, a great assembly, all the people who lived in (Q)Pathros in the land of Egypt, answered Jeremiah: 16 “As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord, (R)we will not listen to you. 17 (S)But we will do everything that we have vowed, make offerings to (T)the queen of heaven (U)and pour out drink offerings to her, (V)as we did, both we and our fathers, our kings and our officials, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we had plenty of food, and prospered, and saw no disaster. 18 But since we left off making offerings to (W)the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything (X)and have been consumed by the sword and by famine.” 19 And the women said,[b] “When we made offerings to the queen of heaven (Y)and poured out drink offerings to her, was it (Z)without our husbands' approval that we made cakes for her bearing her image and poured out drink offerings to her?”

20 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, (AA)men and women, all the people who had given him this answer: 21 (AB)“As for the offerings that you offered in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, you and your fathers, your kings and your officials, and the people of the land, (AC)did not the Lord remember them? Did it not come into his mind? 22 (AD)The Lord could no longer bear your evil deeds and (AE)the abominations that you committed. (AF)Therefore your land has become (AG)a desolation and a waste and a curse, (AH)without inhabitant, as it is this day. 23 It is because you made offerings (AI)and because you sinned against the Lord and did not obey the voice of the Lord or walk in his law and in his statutes and in his testimonies (AJ)that this disaster has happened to you, as at this day.”

24 Jeremiah said to all the people and all the women, “Hear the word of the Lord, (AK)all you of Judah who are in the land of Egypt. 25 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (AL)You and your wives have declared with your mouths, and have fulfilled it with your hands, saying, ‘We will surely perform our vows that we have made, (AM)to make offerings to the queen of heaven and to pour out drink offerings to her.’ Then confirm your vows and perform your vows! 26 Therefore hear the word of the Lord, (AN)all you of Judah who dwell in the land of Egypt: (AO)Behold, I have sworn by my great name, says the Lord, (AP)that my name shall no more be invoked by the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, (AQ)saying, ‘As the Lord God lives.’ 27 (AR)Behold, I am watching over them for disaster and not for good. (AS)All the men of Judah who are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by famine, until there is an end of them. 28 (AT)And those who escape the sword shall return from the land of Egypt to the land of Judah, (AU)few in number; and all the remnant of Judah, who came to the land of Egypt to live, (AV)shall know whose word will stand, mine or theirs. 29 This shall be the sign to you, declares the Lord, that I will punish you in this place, in order that you may know that (AW)my words will surely stand against you for harm: 30 Thus says the Lord, Behold, I will give (AX)Pharaoh Hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies (AY)and into the hand of those who seek his life, as I gave (AZ)Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, who was his enemy and sought his life.”

Message to Baruch

45 The word that Jeremiah the prophet spoke to (BA)Baruch the son of Neriah, (BB)when he wrote these words in a book at the dictation of Jeremiah, (BC)in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah: “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, to you, O Baruch: You said, (BD)‘Woe is me! For the Lord has added sorrow to my pain. (BE)I am weary with my groaning, (BF)and I find no rest.’ Thus shall you say to him, Thus says the Lord: (BG)Behold, what I have built I am breaking down, and what I have planted I am plucking up—that is, the whole land. And (BH)do you seek great things for yourself? Seek them not, for behold, (BI)I am bringing disaster upon all flesh, declares the Lord. But I will give you (BJ)your life as a prize of war in all places to which you may go.”

Judgment on Egypt

46 The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet (BK)concerning the nations.

About Egypt. (BL)Concerning the army of Pharaoh Neco, king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates at Carchemish and which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon defeated in (BM)the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah:

(BN)“Prepare buckler and shield,
    and advance for battle!
(BO)Harness the horses;
    mount, O horsemen!
Take your stations with your helmets,
    (BP)polish your spears,
    put on your armor!
Why have I seen it?
They are dismayed
    and have turned backward.
Their (BQ)warriors are beaten down
    and have fled in haste;
(BR)they look not back—
    (BS)terror on every side!
declares the Lord.

“The swift cannot flee away,
    nor the warrior escape;
(BT)in the north by the river Euphrates
    (BU)they have stumbled and fallen.

“Who is this, (BV)rising like the Nile,
    like rivers (BW)whose waters surge?
Egypt rises like the Nile,
    like rivers (BX)whose waters surge.
He said, ‘I will rise, I will cover the earth,
    I will destroy cities and their inhabitants.’
(BY)Advance, O horses,
    and rage, O chariots!
Let the warriors go out:
    men of Cush and (BZ)Put who handle the shield,
    (CA)men of Lud, skilled in handling the bow.
10 (CB)That day is the day of the Lord God of hosts,
    (CC)a day of vengeance,
    (CD)to avenge himself on his foes.
(CE)The sword shall devour and be sated
    and drink its fill of their blood.
For the Lord God of hosts holds (CF)a sacrifice
    (CG)in the north country (CH)by the river Euphrates.
11 (CI)Go up to Gilead, and take (CJ)balm,
    O virgin daughter of Egypt!
In vain you have used many medicines;
    (CK)there is no healing for you.
12 The nations have heard of your shame,
    and the earth is full of your cry;
(CL)for warrior has stumbled against warrior;
    they have both fallen together.”

13 The word that the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the coming of (CM)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to strike the land of Egypt:

14 “Declare in Egypt, and proclaim in (CN)Migdol;
    proclaim in (CO)Memphis and (CP)Tahpanhes;
say, (CQ)‘Stand ready and be prepared,
    for (CR)the sword shall devour around you.’
15 Why are your mighty ones face down?
    They do not stand[c]
    because the Lord thrust them down.
16 He made many stumble, (CS)and they fell,
    and they said one to another,
‘Arise, and let us go back to our own people
    and to the land of our birth,
    (CT)because of the sword of the oppressor.’

Have you forgotten the wickedness committed by your ancestors(A) and by the kings(B) and queens(C) of Judah and the wickedness committed by you and your wives(D) in the land of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem?(E) 10 To this day they have not humbled(F) themselves or shown reverence,(G) nor have they followed my law(H) and the decrees(I) I set before you and your ancestors.(J)

11 “Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty,(K) the God of Israel, says: I am determined to bring disaster(L) on you and to destroy all Judah. 12 I will take away the remnant(M) of Judah who were determined to go to Egypt to settle there. They will all perish in Egypt; they will fall by the sword or die from famine. From the least to the greatest,(N) they will die by sword or famine.(O) They will become a curse and an object of horror, a curse and an object of reproach.(P) 13 I will punish(Q) those who live in Egypt with the sword,(R) famine and plague,(S) as I punished Jerusalem. 14 None of the remnant of Judah who have gone to live in Egypt will escape or survive to return to the land of Judah, to which they long to return and live; none will return except a few fugitives.”(T)

15 Then all the men who knew that their wives(U) were burning incense(V) to other gods, along with all the women(W) who were present—a large assembly—and all the people living in Lower and Upper Egypt,(X) said to Jeremiah, 16 “We will not listen(Y) to the message you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord!(Z) 17 We will certainly do everything we said we would:(AA) We will burn incense(AB) to the Queen of Heaven(AC) and will pour out drink offerings to her just as we and our ancestors, our kings and our officials(AD) did in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem.(AE) At that time we had plenty of food(AF) and were well off and suffered no harm.(AG) 18 But ever since we stopped burning incense to the Queen of Heaven and pouring out drink offerings(AH) to her, we have had nothing and have been perishing by sword and famine.(AI)

19 The women added, “When we burned incense(AJ) to the Queen of Heaven(AK) and poured out drink offerings to her, did not our husbands(AL) know that we were making cakes(AM) impressed with her image(AN) and pouring out drink offerings to her?”

20 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, both men and women, who were answering him, 21 “Did not the Lord remember(AO) and call to mind the incense(AP) burned in the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem(AQ) by you and your ancestors,(AR) your kings and your officials and the people of the land?(AS) 22 When the Lord could no longer endure(AT) your wicked actions and the detestable things you did, your land became a curse(AU) and a desolate waste(AV) without inhabitants, as it is today.(AW) 23 Because you have burned incense and have sinned against the Lord and have not obeyed him or followed(AX) his law or his decrees(AY) or his stipulations, this disaster(AZ) has come upon you, as you now see.”(BA)

24 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, including the women,(BB) “Hear the word of the Lord, all you people of Judah in Egypt.(BC) 25 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You and your wives(BD) have done what you said you would do when you promised, ‘We will certainly carry out the vows we made to burn incense and pour out drink offerings to the Queen of Heaven.’(BE)

“Go ahead then, do what you promised! Keep your vows!(BF) 26 But hear the word of the Lord, all you Jews living in Egypt:(BG) ‘I swear(BH) by my great name,’ says the Lord, ‘that no one from Judah living anywhere in Egypt will ever again invoke my name or swear, “As surely as the Sovereign(BI) Lord lives.”(BJ) 27 For I am watching(BK) over them for harm,(BL) not for good; the Jews in Egypt will perish(BM) by sword and famine(BN) until they are all destroyed.(BO) 28 Those who escape the sword(BP) and return to the land of Judah from Egypt will be very few.(BQ) Then the whole remnant(BR) of Judah who came to live in Egypt will know whose word will stand(BS)—mine or theirs.(BT)

29 “‘This will be the sign(BU) to you that I will punish(BV) you in this place,’ declares the Lord, ‘so that you will know that my threats of harm against you will surely stand.’(BW) 30 This is what the Lord says: ‘I am going to deliver Pharaoh(BX) Hophra king of Egypt into the hands of his enemies who want to kill him, just as I gave Zedekiah(BY) king of Judah into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the enemy who wanted to kill him.’”(BZ)

A Message to Baruch

45 When Baruch(CA) son of Neriah(CB) wrote on a scroll(CC) the words Jeremiah the prophet dictated in the fourth year of Jehoiakim(CD) son of Josiah king of Judah, Jeremiah said this to Baruch: “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to you, Baruch: You said, ‘Woe(CE) to me! The Lord has added sorrow(CF) to my pain;(CG) I am worn out with groaning(CH) and find no rest.’(CI) But the Lord has told me to say to you, ‘This is what the Lord says: I will overthrow what I have built and uproot(CJ) what I have planted,(CK) throughout the earth.(CL) Should you then seek great(CM) things for yourself? Do not seek them.(CN) For I will bring disaster(CO) on all people,(CP) declares the Lord, but wherever you go I will let you escape(CQ) with your life.’”(CR)

A Message About Egypt

46 This is the word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the nations:(CS)

Concerning Egypt:(CT)

This is the message against the army of Pharaoh Necho(CU) king of Egypt, which was defeated at Carchemish(CV) on the Euphrates(CW) River by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon in the fourth year of Jehoiakim(CX) son of Josiah king of Judah:

“Prepare your shields,(CY) both large and small,
    and march out for battle!
Harness the horses,
    mount the steeds!
Take your positions
    with helmets on!
Polish(CZ) your spears,
    put on your armor!(DA)
What do I see?
    They are terrified,
they are retreating,
    their warriors are defeated.
They flee(DB) in haste
    without looking back,
    and there is terror(DC) on every side,”
declares the Lord.
“The swift cannot flee(DD)
    nor the strong escape.
In the north by the River Euphrates(DE)
    they stumble and fall.(DF)

“Who is this that rises like the Nile,
    like rivers of surging waters?(DG)
Egypt rises like the Nile,(DH)
    like rivers of surging waters.
She says, ‘I will rise and cover the earth;
    I will destroy cities and their people.’(DI)
Charge, you horses!
    Drive furiously, you charioteers!(DJ)
March on, you warriors—men of Cush[a](DK) and Put who carry shields,
    men of Lydia(DL) who draw the bow.
10 But that day(DM) belongs to the Lord, the Lord Almighty—
    a day of vengeance(DN), for vengeance on his foes.
The sword will devour(DO) till it is satisfied,
    till it has quenched its thirst with blood.(DP)
For the Lord, the Lord Almighty, will offer sacrifice(DQ)
    in the land of the north by the River Euphrates.(DR)

11 “Go up to Gilead and get balm,(DS)
    Virgin(DT) Daughter Egypt.
But you try many medicines in vain;
    there is no healing(DU) for you.
12 The nations will hear of your shame;
    your cries will fill the earth.
One warrior will stumble over another;
    both will fall(DV) down together.”

13 This is the message the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the coming of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon(DW) to attack Egypt:(DX)

14 “Announce this in Egypt, and proclaim it in Migdol;
    proclaim it also in Memphis(DY) and Tahpanhes:(DZ)
‘Take your positions and get ready,
    for the sword devours(EA) those around you.’
15 Why will your warriors be laid low?
    They cannot stand, for the Lord will push them down.(EB)
16 They will stumble(EC) repeatedly;
    they will fall(ED) over each other.
They will say, ‘Get up, let us go back
    to our own people(EE) and our native lands,
    away from the sword of the oppressor.’(EF)
