Gedaliah Murdered
41 (A)In the seventh month, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, son of Elishama, of the royal family, one of the chief officers of the king, came with ten men to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, at (B)Mizpah. As they (C)ate bread together there at Mizpah, 2 (D)Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and the ten men with him rose up and struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, with the sword, and killed him, (E)whom the king of Babylon had appointed governor in the land. 3 Ishmael also struck down all the Judeans who were with Gedaliah at (F)Mizpah, and the Chaldean soldiers who happened to be there.
4 On the day after the murder of Gedaliah, before anyone knew of it, 5 eighty men arrived from (G)Shechem and (H)Shiloh and (I)Samaria, with (J)their beards shaved and (K)their clothes torn, and (L)their bodies gashed, (M)bringing grain offerings and incense to present at the temple of the Lord. 6 And Ishmael the son of Nethaniah came out from (N)Mizpah to meet them, weeping as he came. As he met them, he said to them, “Come in to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam.” 7 When they came into the city, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and the men with him slaughtered them and cast them into a cistern. 8 But there were ten men among them who said to Ishmael, “Do not put us to death, for we have (O)stores of wheat, barley, oil, and honey hidden in the fields.” So he refrained and did not put them to death with their companions.
9 Now the cistern into which Ishmael had thrown all the bodies of the men whom he had struck down along with[a] Gedaliah was the large cistern that (P)King Asa had made for defense against (Q)Baasha king of Israel; Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with the slain. 10 Then Ishmael took captive all the rest of the people who were in Mizpah, (R)the king's daughters and all the people who were left at Mizpah, whom (S)Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, had committed to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam. Ishmael the son of Nethaniah took them captive and set out to cross over to (T)the Ammonites.
11 But when (U)Johanan the son of Kareah and (V)all the leaders of the forces with him heard of all the evil that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done, 12 they took all their men and went to fight against Ishmael the son of Nethaniah. They came upon him at (W)the great pool that is in (X)Gibeon. 13 And when all the people who were with Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah and (Y)all the leaders of the forces with him, they rejoiced. 14 (Z)So all the people whom Ishmael had carried away captive from Mizpah turned around and came back, and went to Johanan the son of Kareah. 15 But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah escaped from Johanan with eight men, and went to (AA)the Ammonites. 16 Then Johanan the son of Kareah and (AB)all the leaders of the forces with him took from Mizpah all the rest of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, after he had struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam—soldiers, (AC)women, children, and eunuchs, whom Johanan brought back from (AD)Gibeon. 17 And they went and stayed at Geruth (AE)Chimham near (AF)Bethlehem, intending to go to Egypt 18 because of the Chaldeans. For they were afraid of them, because Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, (AG)whom the king of Babylon had made governor over the land.
Warning Against Going to Egypt
42 Then (AH)all the commanders of the forces, and (AI)Johanan the son of Kareah and Jezaniah the son of (AJ)Hoshaiah, and all the people (AK)from the least to the greatest, came near 2 and said to Jeremiah the prophet, “Let (AL)our plea for mercy come before you, and (AM)pray to the Lord your God for us, for all (AN)this remnant—(AO)because we are left with but a few, as your eyes see us— 3 that (AP)the Lord your God may show us the way we should go, and the thing that we should do.” 4 Jeremiah the prophet said to them, “I have heard you. Behold, I will pray to the Lord your God according to your request, and (AQ)whatever the Lord answers you I will tell you. (AR)I will keep nothing back from you.” 5 Then they said to Jeremiah, (AS)“May the Lord be a true and (AT)faithful witness against us (AU)if we do not act according to all the word (AV)with which the Lord your God sends you to us. 6 Whether it is good or bad, we will obey the voice of the Lord our God to whom we are sending you, (AW)that it may be well with us when we obey the voice of the Lord our God.”
7 (AX)At the end of ten days the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah. 8 Then he summoned (AY)Johanan the son of Kareah and (AZ)all the commanders of the forces who were with him, and all the people (BA)from the least to the greatest, 9 and said to them, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, (BB)to whom you sent me to present your plea for mercy before him: 10 If you will remain in this land, (BC)then I will build you up and not pull you down; I will plant you, and not pluck you up; (BD)for I relent of the disaster that I did to you. 11 (BE)Do not fear the king of Babylon, (BF)of whom you are afraid. (BG)Do not fear him, declares the Lord, (BH)for I am with you, to save you and to deliver you from his hand. 12 (BI)I will grant you mercy, that he may have mercy on you and let you remain in your own land. 13 (BJ)But if you say, ‘We will not remain in this land,’ disobeying the voice of the Lord your God 14 and saying, ‘No, (BK)we will go to the land of Egypt, where we shall not see war or (BL)hear the sound of the trumpet or (BM)be hungry for bread, and we will dwell there,’ 15 then hear the word of the Lord, O remnant of Judah. Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (BN)If you set your faces to enter Egypt (BO)and go to live there, 16 then the sword (BP)that you fear shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine of which you are afraid shall follow close after you to Egypt, (BQ)and there you shall die. 17 All the men who set their faces to go to Egypt to live there shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence. They shall have (BR)no remnant or survivor from the disaster that I will bring upon them.
18 “For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (BS)As my anger and my wrath were poured out on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so my wrath will be poured out on you when you go to Egypt. (BT)You shall become an execration, a horror, a curse, and a taunt. You shall see this place no more. 19 The Lord has said to you, O remnant of Judah, (BU)‘Do not go to Egypt.’ (BV)Know for a certainty that I have warned you this day 20 that you have gone astray at the cost of your lives. (BW)For you sent me to the Lord your God, saying, (BX)‘Pray for us to the Lord our God, and (BY)whatever the Lord our God says, declare to us and we will do it.’ 21 And I have this day declared it to you, but you have not obeyed the voice of the Lord your God in anything (BZ)that he sent me to tell you. 22 (CA)Now therefore know for a certainty that you shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence in the place where you desire to go to live.”
Jeremiah Taken to Egypt
43 When Jeremiah finished speaking to all the people all these words of the Lord their God, with which the Lord their God had sent him to them, 2 Azariah the son of (CB)Hoshaiah and (CC)Johanan the son of Kareah and (CD)all the insolent men said to Jeremiah, “You are telling a lie. The Lord our God did not send you to say, (CE)‘Do not go to Egypt to live there,’ 3 but (CF)Baruch the son of Neriah (CG)has set you against us, (CH)to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they may kill us or take us into exile in Babylon.” 4 So (CI)Johanan the son of Kareah and all (CJ)the commanders of the forces and all the people did not obey the voice of the Lord, to remain in the land of Judah. 5 But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces took (CK)all the remnant of Judah who had returned to live in the land of Judah from all the nations to which they had been driven— 6 (CL)the men, the women, the children, (CM)the princesses, and every person whom (CN)Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with (CO)Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan; also Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch the son of Neriah. 7 And they came into the land of Egypt, for they did not obey the voice of the Lord. And they arrived at (CP)Tahpanhes.
8 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah in (CQ)Tahpanhes: 9 “Take in your hands large stones and hide them in the mortar in the pavement that is at the entrance to Pharaoh's palace in (CR)Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah, 10 and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, (CS)my servant, (CT)and I will set his throne above these stones that I have hidden, and he will spread his royal canopy over them. 11 He shall come (CU)and strike the land of Egypt, (CV)giving over to the pestilence those who are doomed to the pestilence, to captivity those who are doomed to captivity, and to the sword those who are doomed to the sword. 12 (CW)I shall kindle a fire (CX)in the temples of the gods of Egypt, and he shall burn them (CY)and carry them away captive. (CZ)And he shall clean the land of Egypt (DA)as a shepherd cleans his cloak of vermin, and he shall go away from there in peace. 13 He shall break the (DB)obelisks of Heliopolis, which is in the land of Egypt, (DC)and the temples of the gods of Egypt he shall burn with fire.’”
Judgment for Idolatry
44 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Judeans who lived in the land of Egypt, at (DD)Migdol, at (DE)Tahpanhes, at Memphis, and in the land of (DF)Pathros, 2 “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: You have seen all the disaster that I brought upon Jerusalem and upon all the cities of Judah. Behold, this day (DG)they are a desolation, and no one dwells in them, 3 because of the evil that they committed, (DH)provoking me to anger, (DI)in that they went to make offerings (DJ)and serve other gods that they knew not, neither they, nor you, nor your fathers. 4 (DK)Yet I persistently sent to you all my servants the prophets, saying, ‘Oh, do not do this abomination that I hate!’ 5 (DL)But they did not listen (DM)or incline their ear, to turn from their evil and make no offerings to other gods. 6 (DN)Therefore my wrath and my anger were poured out and kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, (DO)and they became a waste and a desolation, as at this day. 7 And now thus says the Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel: Why do you commit this great evil (DP)against yourselves, to cut off from you (DQ)man and woman, (DR)infant and child, from the midst of Judah, leaving you no remnant? 8 (DS)Why do you provoke me to anger with the works of your hands, (DT)making offerings to other gods in the land of Egypt where you have come to live, so that you may be cut off and become (DU)a curse and a taunt among all the nations of the earth? 9 Have you forgotten the evil of your fathers, (DV)the evil of the kings of Judah, (DW)the evil of their[b] wives, your own evil, (DX)and the evil of your wives, which they committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 10 They have not humbled themselves even to this day, (DY)nor have they feared, nor walked in my law and my statutes that I set before you and before your fathers.
11 “Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (DZ)Behold, I will set my face against you for harm, to cut off all Judah. 12 I will take the remnant of Judah who have (EA)set their faces to come to the land of Egypt to live, and they shall all be consumed. (EB)In the land of Egypt they shall fall; by the sword and by famine (EC)they shall be consumed. (ED)From the least to the greatest, they shall die by the sword and by famine, (EE)and they shall become an oath, a horror, (EF)a curse, and a taunt. 13 (EG)I will punish those who dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, with the sword, with famine, and with pestilence, 14 (EH)so that none of the remnant of Judah who have come to live in the land of Egypt shall escape or survive (EI)or return to the land of Judah, to which they desire to return to dwell there. For they shall not return, (EJ)except some fugitives.”
15 Then all the men who knew that (EK)their wives had made offerings to other gods, and all the women who stood by, a great assembly, all the people who lived in (EL)Pathros in the land of Egypt, answered Jeremiah: 16 “As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord, (EM)we will not listen to you. 17 (EN)But we will do everything that we have vowed, make offerings to (EO)the queen of heaven (EP)and pour out drink offerings to her, (EQ)as we did, both we and our fathers, our kings and our officials, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we had plenty of food, and prospered, and saw no disaster. 18 But since we left off making offerings to (ER)the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything (ES)and have been consumed by the sword and by famine.” 19 And the women said,[c] “When we made offerings to the queen of heaven (ET)and poured out drink offerings to her, was it (EU)without our husbands' approval that we made cakes for her bearing her image and poured out drink offerings to her?”
20 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, (EV)men and women, all the people who had given him this answer: 21 (EW)“As for the offerings that you offered in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, you and your fathers, your kings and your officials, and the people of the land, (EX)did not the Lord remember them? Did it not come into his mind? 22 (EY)The Lord could no longer bear your evil deeds and (EZ)the abominations that you committed. (FA)Therefore your land has become (FB)a desolation and a waste and a curse, (FC)without inhabitant, as it is this day. 23 It is because you made offerings (FD)and because you sinned against the Lord and did not obey the voice of the Lord or walk in his law and in his statutes and in his testimonies (FE)that this disaster has happened to you, as at this day.”
24 Jeremiah said to all the people and all the women, “Hear the word of the Lord, (FF)all you of Judah who are in the land of Egypt. 25 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (FG)You and your wives have declared with your mouths, and have fulfilled it with your hands, saying, ‘We will surely perform our vows that we have made, (FH)to make offerings to the queen of heaven and to pour out drink offerings to her.’ Then confirm your vows and perform your vows! 26 Therefore hear the word of the Lord, (FI)all you of Judah who dwell in the land of Egypt: (FJ)Behold, I have sworn by my great name, says the Lord, (FK)that my name shall no more be invoked by the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, (FL)saying, ‘As the Lord God lives.’ 27 (FM)Behold, I am watching over them for disaster and not for good. (FN)All the men of Judah who are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by famine, until there is an end of them. 28 (FO)And those who escape the sword shall return from the land of Egypt to the land of Judah, (FP)few in number; and all the remnant of Judah, who came to the land of Egypt to live, (FQ)shall know whose word will stand, mine or theirs. 29 This shall be the sign to you, declares the Lord, that I will punish you in this place, in order that you may know that (FR)my words will surely stand against you for harm: 30 Thus says the Lord, Behold, I will give (FS)Pharaoh Hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies (FT)and into the hand of those who seek his life, as I gave (FU)Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, who was his enemy and sought his life.”

While they were eating together there, 2 Ishmael(B) son of Nethaniah and the ten men who were with him got up and struck down Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword,(C) killing the one whom the king of Babylon had appointed(D) as governor over the land.(E) 3 Ishmael also killed all the men of Judah who were with Gedaliah at Mizpah, as well as the Babylonian[a] soldiers who were there.
4 The day after Gedaliah’s assassination, before anyone knew about it, 5 eighty men who had shaved off their beards,(F) torn their clothes(G) and cut(H) themselves came from Shechem,(I) Shiloh(J) and Samaria,(K) bringing grain offerings and incense(L) with them to the house of the Lord.(M) 6 Ishmael son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping(N) as he went. When he met them, he said, “Come to Gedaliah son of Ahikam.”(O) 7 When they went into the city, Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the men who were with him slaughtered them and threw them into a cistern.(P) 8 But ten of them said to Ishmael, “Don’t kill us! We have wheat and barley, olive oil and honey, hidden in a field.”(Q) So he let them alone and did not kill them with the others. 9 Now the cistern where he threw all the bodies of the men he had killed along with Gedaliah was the one King Asa(R) had made as part of his defense(S) against Baasha(T) king of Israel. Ishmael son of Nethaniah filled it with the dead.
10 Ishmael made captives of all the rest of the people(U) who were in Mizpah—the king’s daughters(V) along with all the others who were left there, over whom Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam. Ishmael son of Nethaniah took them captive and set out to cross over to the Ammonites.(W)
11 When Johanan(X) son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him heard about all the crimes Ishmael son of Nethaniah had committed, 12 they took all their men and went to fight(Y) Ishmael son of Nethaniah. They caught up with him near the great pool(Z) in Gibeon. 13 When all the people(AA) Ishmael had with him saw Johanan son of Kareah and the army officers who were with him, they were glad. 14 All the people Ishmael had taken captive at Mizpah(AB) turned and went over to Johanan son of Kareah. 15 But Ishmael son of Nethaniah and eight of his men escaped(AC) from Johanan and fled to the Ammonites.
Flight to Egypt
16 Then Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers(AD) who were with him led away all the people of Mizpah who had survived,(AE) whom Johanan had recovered from Ishmael son of Nethaniah after Ishmael had assassinated Gedaliah son of Ahikam—the soldiers, women, children and court officials he had recovered from Gibeon. 17 And they went on, stopping at Geruth Kimham(AF) near Bethlehem(AG) on their way to Egypt(AH) 18 to escape the Babylonians.[b] They were afraid(AI) of them because Ishmael son of Nethaniah had killed Gedaliah(AJ) son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed as governor over the land.
42 Then all the army officers, including Johanan(AK) son of Kareah and Jezaniah[c] son of Hoshaiah,(AL) and all the people from the least to the greatest(AM) approached 2 Jeremiah the prophet and said to him, “Please hear our petition and pray(AN) to the Lord your God for this entire remnant.(AO) For as you now see, though we were once many, now only a few(AP) are left. 3 Pray that the Lord your God will tell us where we should go and what we should do.”(AQ)
4 “I have heard you,” replied Jeremiah the prophet. “I will certainly pray(AR) to the Lord your God as you have requested; I will tell(AS) you everything the Lord says and will keep nothing back from you.”(AT)
5 Then they said to Jeremiah, “May the Lord be a true(AU) and faithful(AV) witness(AW) against us if we do not act in accordance with everything the Lord your God sends you to tell us. 6 Whether it is favorable or unfavorable, we will obey the Lord our God, to whom we are sending you, so that it will go well(AX) with us, for we will obey(AY) the Lord our God.”
7 Ten days later the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah. 8 So he called together Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers(AZ) who were with him and all the people from the least to the greatest.(BA) 9 He said to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to present your petition,(BB) says:(BC) 10 ‘If you stay in this land,(BD) I will build(BE) you up and not tear you down; I will plant(BF) you and not uproot you,(BG) for I have relented concerning the disaster I have inflicted on you.(BH) 11 Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon,(BI) whom you now fear.(BJ) Do not be afraid of him, declares the Lord, for I am with you and will save(BK) you and deliver you from his hands.(BL) 12 I will show you compassion(BM) so that he will have compassion on you and restore you to your land.’(BN)
13 “However, if you say, ‘We will not stay in this land,’ and so disobey(BO) the Lord your God, 14 and if you say, ‘No, we will go and live in Egypt,(BP) where we will not see war or hear the trumpet(BQ) or be hungry for bread,’(BR) 15 then hear the word of the Lord,(BS) you remnant of Judah. This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you are determined to go to Egypt and you do go to settle there, 16 then the sword(BT) you fear(BU) will overtake you there, and the famine(BV) you dread will follow you into Egypt, and there you will die.(BW) 17 Indeed, all who are determined to go to Egypt to settle there will die by the sword, famine and plague;(BX) not one of them will survive or escape the disaster I will bring on them.’ 18 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘As my anger and wrath(BY) have been poured out on those who lived in Jerusalem,(BZ) so will my wrath be poured out on you when you go to Egypt. You will be a curse[d](CA) and an object of horror,(CB) a curse[e] and an object of reproach;(CC) you will never see this place again.’(CD)
19 “Remnant(CE) of Judah, the Lord has told you, ‘Do not go to Egypt.’(CF) Be sure of this: I warn you today 20 that you made a fatal mistake when you sent me to the Lord your God and said, ‘Pray to the Lord our God for us; tell us everything he says and we will do it.’(CG) 21 I have told you today, but you still have not obeyed the Lord your God in all he sent me to tell you.(CH) 22 So now, be sure of this: You will die by the sword, famine(CI) and plague(CJ) in the place where you want to go to settle.”(CK)
43 When Jeremiah had finished telling the people all the words of the Lord their God—everything the Lord had sent him to tell them(CL)— 2 Azariah son of Hoshaiah(CM) and Johanan(CN) son of Kareah and all the arrogant(CO) men said to Jeremiah, “You are lying!(CP) The Lord our God has not sent you to say, ‘You must not go to Egypt to settle there.’(CQ) 3 But Baruch(CR) son of Neriah is inciting you against us to hand us over to the Babylonians,[f] so they may kill us or carry us into exile to Babylon.”(CS)
4 So Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers and all the people(CT) disobeyed the Lord’s command(CU) to stay in the land of Judah.(CV) 5 Instead, Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers led away all the remnant of Judah who had come back to live in the land of Judah from all the nations where they had been scattered.(CW) 6 They also led away all those whom Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had left with Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan—the men, the women,(CX) the children and the king’s daughters. And they took Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch(CY) son of Neriah along with them. 7 So they entered Egypt(CZ) in disobedience to the Lord and went as far as Tahpanhes.(DA)
8 In Tahpanhes(DB) the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 9 “While the Jews are watching, take some large stones(DC) with you and bury them in clay in the brick(DD) pavement at the entrance to Pharaoh’s palace(DE) in Tahpanhes. 10 Then say to them, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: I will send for my servant(DF) Nebuchadnezzar(DG) king of Babylon, and I will set his throne(DH) over these stones I have buried here; he will spread his royal canopy(DI) above them. 11 He will come and attack Egypt,(DJ) bringing death(DK) to those destined(DL) for death, captivity to those destined for captivity,(DM) and the sword to those destined for the sword.(DN) 12 He will set fire(DO) to the temples(DP) of the gods(DQ) of Egypt; he will burn their temples and take their gods captive.(DR) As a shepherd picks(DS) his garment clean of lice, so he will pick Egypt clean and depart. 13 There in the temple of the sun[g](DT) in Egypt he will demolish the sacred pillars(DU) and will burn down the temples of the gods of Egypt.’”
Disaster Because of Idolatry
44 This word came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews living in Lower Egypt(DV)—in Migdol,(DW) Tahpanhes(DX) and Memphis(DY)—and in Upper Egypt:(DZ) 2 “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You saw the great disaster(EA) I brought on Jerusalem and on all the towns of Judah.(EB) Today they lie deserted and in ruins(EC) 3 because of the evil(ED) they have done. They aroused my anger(EE) by burning incense(EF) to and worshiping other gods(EG) that neither they nor you nor your ancestors(EH) ever knew. 4 Again and again(EI) I sent my servants the prophets,(EJ) who said, ‘Do not do this detestable(EK) thing that I hate!’ 5 But they did not listen or pay attention;(EL) they did not turn from their wickedness(EM) or stop burning incense(EN) to other gods.(EO) 6 Therefore, my fierce anger was poured out;(EP) it raged against the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem and made them the desolate ruins(EQ) they are today.
7 “Now this is what the Lord God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Why bring such great disaster(ER) on yourselves by cutting off from Judah the men and women,(ES) the children and infants, and so leave yourselves without a remnant?(ET) 8 Why arouse my anger with what your hands have made,(EU) burning incense(EV) to other gods in Egypt,(EW) where you have come to live?(EX) You will destroy yourselves and make yourselves a curse[h] and an object of reproach(EY) among all the nations on earth. 9 Have you forgotten the wickedness committed by your ancestors(EZ) and by the kings(FA) and queens(FB) of Judah and the wickedness committed by you and your wives(FC) in the land of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem?(FD) 10 To this day they have not humbled(FE) themselves or shown reverence,(FF) nor have they followed my law(FG) and the decrees(FH) I set before you and your ancestors.(FI)
11 “Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty,(FJ) the God of Israel, says: I am determined to bring disaster(FK) on you and to destroy all Judah. 12 I will take away the remnant(FL) of Judah who were determined to go to Egypt to settle there. They will all perish in Egypt; they will fall by the sword or die from famine. From the least to the greatest,(FM) they will die by sword or famine.(FN) They will become a curse and an object of horror, a curse and an object of reproach.(FO) 13 I will punish(FP) those who live in Egypt with the sword,(FQ) famine and plague,(FR) as I punished Jerusalem. 14 None of the remnant of Judah who have gone to live in Egypt will escape or survive to return to the land of Judah, to which they long to return and live; none will return except a few fugitives.”(FS)
15 Then all the men who knew that their wives(FT) were burning incense(FU) to other gods, along with all the women(FV) who were present—a large assembly—and all the people living in Lower and Upper Egypt,(FW) said to Jeremiah, 16 “We will not listen(FX) to the message you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord!(FY) 17 We will certainly do everything we said we would:(FZ) We will burn incense(GA) to the Queen of Heaven(GB) and will pour out drink offerings to her just as we and our ancestors, our kings and our officials(GC) did in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem.(GD) At that time we had plenty of food(GE) and were well off and suffered no harm.(GF) 18 But ever since we stopped burning incense to the Queen of Heaven and pouring out drink offerings(GG) to her, we have had nothing and have been perishing by sword and famine.(GH)”
19 The women added, “When we burned incense(GI) to the Queen of Heaven(GJ) and poured out drink offerings to her, did not our husbands(GK) know that we were making cakes(GL) impressed with her image(GM) and pouring out drink offerings to her?”
20 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, both men and women, who were answering him, 21 “Did not the Lord remember(GN) and call to mind the incense(GO) burned in the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem(GP) by you and your ancestors,(GQ) your kings and your officials and the people of the land?(GR) 22 When the Lord could no longer endure(GS) your wicked actions and the detestable things you did, your land became a curse(GT) and a desolate waste(GU) without inhabitants, as it is today.(GV) 23 Because you have burned incense and have sinned against the Lord and have not obeyed him or followed(GW) his law or his decrees(GX) or his stipulations, this disaster(GY) has come upon you, as you now see.”(GZ)
24 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, including the women,(HA) “Hear the word of the Lord, all you people of Judah in Egypt.(HB) 25 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You and your wives(HC) have done what you said you would do when you promised, ‘We will certainly carry out the vows we made to burn incense and pour out drink offerings to the Queen of Heaven.’(HD)
“Go ahead then, do what you promised! Keep your vows!(HE) 26 But hear the word of the Lord, all you Jews living in Egypt:(HF) ‘I swear(HG) by my great name,’ says the Lord, ‘that no one from Judah living anywhere in Egypt will ever again invoke my name or swear, “As surely as the Sovereign(HH) Lord lives.”(HI) 27 For I am watching(HJ) over them for harm,(HK) not for good; the Jews in Egypt will perish(HL) by sword and famine(HM) until they are all destroyed.(HN) 28 Those who escape the sword(HO) and return to the land of Judah from Egypt will be very few.(HP) Then the whole remnant(HQ) of Judah who came to live in Egypt will know whose word will stand(HR)—mine or theirs.(HS)
29 “‘This will be the sign(HT) to you that I will punish(HU) you in this place,’ declares the Lord, ‘so that you will know that my threats of harm against you will surely stand.’(HV) 30 This is what the Lord says: ‘I am going to deliver Pharaoh(HW) Hophra king of Egypt into the hands of his enemies who want to kill him, just as I gave Zedekiah(HX) king of Judah into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the enemy who wanted to kill him.’”(HY)

2 Then arose Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and the ten men that were with him, and smote Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan with the sword, and slew him, whom the king of Babylon had made governor over the land.
3 Ishmael also slew all the Jews that were with him, even with Gedaliah, at Mizpah, and the Chaldeans that were found there, and the men of war.

21 The incense that ye burned in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, ye, and your fathers, your kings, and your princes, and the people of the land, did not the Lord remember them, and came it not into his mind?

Jesus Faces Annas and Caiaphas
12 So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews[d] arrested Jesus and bound him. 13 First they (M)led him to (N)Annas, for he was the father-in-law of (O)Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14 It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews (P)that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people.
Peter Denies Jesus
15 (Q)Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest, 16 (R)but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in. 17 (S)The servant girl at the door said to Peter, “You also are not one of this man's disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.” 18 Now the servants[e] and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. (T)Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.
The High Priest Questions Jesus
19 (U)The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. 20 Jesus answered him, “I have spoken (V)openly (W)to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. (X)I have said nothing in secret. 21 Why do you ask me? Peter Denies Jesus Again
25 (AB)Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You also are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” 26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of (AC)the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you (AD)in the garden with him?” 27 Peter again denied it, and (AE)at once a rooster crowed.
Jesus Before Pilate
28 (AF)Then they led Jesus (AG)from the house of Caiaphas to (AH)the governor's headquarters.[f] It was early morning. Jesus Arrested(A)
18 When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley.(B) On the other side there was a garden,(C) and he and his disciples went into it.(D)
2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.(E) 3 So Judas came to the garden, guiding(F) a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees.(G) They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.
4 Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him,(H) went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”(I)
5 “Jesus of Nazareth,”(J) they replied.
“I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) 6 When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?”(K)
“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.
8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” 9 This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”[a](L)
10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)
11 Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup(M) the Father has given me?”
12 Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials(N) arrested Jesus. They bound him 13 and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas,(O) the high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.(P)
Peter’s First Denial(Q)
15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest,(R) he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,(S) 16 but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.
17 “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter.
He replied, “I am not.”(T)
18 It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire(U) they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.(V)
The High Priest Questions Jesus(W)
19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
20 “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus replied. “I always taught in synagogues(X) or at the temple,(Y) where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.(Z) 21 Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.”
22 When Jesus said this, one of the officials(AA) nearby slapped him in the face.(AB) “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.
23 “If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”(AC) 24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas(AD) the high priest.
Peter’s Second and Third Denials(AE)
25 Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself.(AF) So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?”
He denied it, saying, “I am not.”(AG)
26 One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off,(AH) challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?”(AI) 27 Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.(AJ)
Jesus Before Pilate(AK)
28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor.(AL) By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace,(AM) because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.(AN) 29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”
30 “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”
31 Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”
“But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected. 32 This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.(AO)
33 Pilate then went back inside the palace,(AP) summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”(AQ)
34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”
35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”
36 Jesus said, “My kingdom(AR) is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders.(AS) But now my kingdom is from another place.”(AT)
37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.
Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth.(AU) Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”(AV)
38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.(AW) 39 But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”
40 They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.(AX)

13 And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.
14 Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
15 And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.
16 But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.
17 Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.
18 And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.
19 The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.
20 Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.
21 Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.
22 And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?
23 Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?
24 Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.
25 And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.
26 One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?
27 Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.
28 Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.
29 Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?
30 They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.
31 Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:
32 That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.
33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?
34 Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?
35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?
36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.
39 But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
40 Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.
