Zedekiah Calls for Jeremiah
37 Zedekiah son of Josiah succeeded Jehoiachin[a] son of Jehoiakim as the king of Judah. He was appointed by King Nebuchadnezzar[b] of Babylon. 2 But neither King Zedekiah nor his attendants nor the people who were left in the land listened to what the Lord said through Jeremiah.
3 Nevertheless, King Zedekiah sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah the priest, son of Maaseiah, to ask Jeremiah, “Please pray to the Lord our God for us.” 4 Jeremiah had not yet been imprisoned, so he could come and go among the people as he pleased.
5 At this time the army of Pharaoh Hophra[c] of Egypt appeared at the southern border of Judah. When the Babylonian[d] army heard about it, they withdrew from their siege of Jerusalem.
6 Then the Lord gave this message to Jeremiah: 7 “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: The king of Judah sent you to ask me what is going to happen. Tell him, ‘Pharaoh’s army is about to return to Egypt, though he came here to help you. 8 Then the Babylonians[e] will come back and capture this city and burn it to the ground.’
9 “This is what the Lord says: Do not fool yourselves into thinking that the Babylonians are gone for good. They aren’t! 10 Even if you were to destroy the entire Babylonian army, leaving only a handful of wounded survivors, they would still stagger from their tents and burn this city to the ground!”
Jeremiah Is Imprisoned
11 When the Babylonian army left Jerusalem because of Pharaoh’s approaching army, 12 Jeremiah started to leave the city on his way to the territory of Benjamin, to claim his share of the property among his relatives there.[f] 13 But as he was walking through the Benjamin Gate, a sentry arrested him and said, “You are defecting to the Babylonians!” The sentry making the arrest was Irijah son of Shelemiah, grandson of Hananiah.
14 “That’s not true!” Jeremiah protested. “I had no intention of doing any such thing.” But Irijah wouldn’t listen, and he took Jeremiah before the officials. 15 They were furious with Jeremiah and had him flogged and imprisoned in the house of Jonathan the secretary. Jonathan’s house had been converted into a prison. 16 Jeremiah was put into a dungeon cell, where he remained for many days.
17 Later King Zedekiah secretly requested that Jeremiah come to the palace, where the king asked him, “Do you have any messages from the Lord?”
“Yes, I do!” said Jeremiah. “You will be defeated by the king of Babylon.”
18 Then Jeremiah asked the king, “What crime have I committed? What have I done against you, your attendants, or the people that I should be imprisoned like this? 19 Where are your prophets now who told you the king of Babylon would not attack you or this land? 20 Listen, my lord the king, I beg you. Don’t send me back to the dungeon in the house of Jonathan the secretary, for I will die there.”
21 So King Zedekiah commanded that Jeremiah not be returned to the dungeon. Instead, he was imprisoned in the courtyard of the guard in the royal palace. The king also commanded that Jeremiah be given a loaf of fresh bread every day as long as there was any left in the city. So Jeremiah was put in the palace prison.
Jeremiah in a Cistern
38 Now Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jehucal[g] son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malkijah heard what Jeremiah had been telling the people. He had been saying, 2 “This is what the Lord says: ‘Everyone who stays in Jerusalem will die from war, famine, or disease, but those who surrender to the Babylonians[h] will live. Their reward will be life. They will live!’ 3 The Lord also says: ‘The city of Jerusalem will certainly be handed over to the army of the king of Babylon, who will capture it.’”
4 So these officials went to the king and said, “Sir, this man must die! That kind of talk will undermine the morale of the few fighting men we have left, as well as that of all the people. This man is a traitor!”
5 King Zedekiah agreed. “All right,” he said. “Do as you like. I can’t stop you.”
6 So the officials took Jeremiah from his cell and lowered him by ropes into an empty cistern in the prison yard. It belonged to Malkijah, a member of the royal family. There was no water in the cistern, but there was a thick layer of mud at the bottom, and Jeremiah sank down into it.
7 But Ebed-melech the Ethiopian,[i] an important court official, heard that Jeremiah was in the cistern. At that time the king was holding court at the Benjamin Gate, 8 so Ebed-melech rushed from the palace to speak with him. 9 “My lord the king,” he said, “these men have done a very evil thing in putting Jeremiah the prophet into the cistern. He will soon die of hunger, for almost all the bread in the city is gone.”
10 So the king told Ebed-melech, “Take thirty of my men with you, and pull Jeremiah out of the cistern before he dies.”
11 So Ebed-melech took the men with him and went to a room in the palace beneath the treasury, where he found some old rags and discarded clothing. He carried these to the cistern and lowered them to Jeremiah on a rope. 12 Ebed-melech called down to Jeremiah, “Put these rags under your armpits to protect you from the ropes.” Then when Jeremiah was ready, 13 they pulled him out. So Jeremiah was returned to the courtyard of the guard—the palace prison—where he remained.
Zedekiah Questions Jeremiah
14 One day King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah and had him brought to the third entrance of the Lord’s Temple. “I want to ask you something,” the king said. “And don’t try to hide the truth.”
15 Jeremiah said, “If I tell you the truth, you will kill me. And if I give you advice, you won’t listen to me anyway.”
16 So King Zedekiah secretly promised him, “As surely as the Lord our Creator lives, I will not kill you or hand you over to the men who want you dead.”
17 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “This is what the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you surrender to the Babylonian officers, you and your family will live, and the city will not be burned down. 18 But if you refuse to surrender, you will not escape! This city will be handed over to the Babylonians, and they will burn it to the ground.’”
19 “But I am afraid to surrender,” the king said, “for the Babylonians may hand me over to the Judeans who have defected to them. And who knows what they will do to me!”
20 Jeremiah replied, “You won’t be handed over to them if you choose to obey the Lord. Your life will be spared, and all will go well for you. 21 But if you refuse to surrender, this is what the Lord has revealed to me: 22 All the women left in your palace will be brought out and given to the officers of the Babylonian army. Then the women will taunt you, saying,
‘What fine friends you have!
They have betrayed and misled you.
When your feet sank in the mud,
they left you to your fate!’
23 All your wives and children will be led out to the Babylonians, and you will not escape. You will be seized by the king of Babylon, and this city will be burned down.”
24 Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Don’t tell anyone you told me this, or you will die! 25 My officials may hear that I spoke to you, and they may say, ‘Tell us what you and the king were talking about. If you don’t tell us, we will kill you.’ 26 If this happens, just tell them you begged me not to send you back to Jonathan’s dungeon, for fear you would die there.”
27 Sure enough, it wasn’t long before the king’s officials came to Jeremiah and asked him why the king had called for him. But Jeremiah followed the king’s instructions, and they left without finding out the truth. No one had overheard the conversation between Jeremiah and the king. 28 And Jeremiah remained a prisoner in the courtyard of the guard until the day Jerusalem was captured.

6-7 Miingon ang Ginoo, ang Dios sa Israel, kang Jeremias, “Ingna si Haring Zedekia sa Juda nga nagsugo kanimo sa pagpakisayod kanako nga, ‘Ang mga sundalo sa Ehipto nga mianhi sa pagtabang kaninyo, mobalik na sa Ehipto. 8 Unya mobalik ang mga taga-Babilonia niini nga siyudad. Ilogon nila kini ug sunogon.’ 9 Miingon pa gayod ang Ginoo: Ayaw ninyo limbongi ang inyong kaugalingon sa paghunahuna nga dili na mobalik ang mga taga-Babilonia, tungod kay mobalik gayod sila. 10 Kay bisan pag mapildi ninyo ang tanang sundalo nga mosulong kaninyo, ug ang mga samdan na lang ang mahibilin sa ilang mga tolda, motindog gihapon sila ug sunogon nila kining siyudad.”
Gipriso si Jeremias
11 Sa dihang miatras ang mga sundalo sa Babilonia gikan sa Jerusalem tungod sa mga sundalo sa hari sa Ehipto, 12 mibiya usab si Jeremias sa Jerusalem ug miadto sa yuta sa Benjamin sa pagkuha sa iyang bahin sa yuta sa iyang pamilya. 13 Apan sa pag-abot niya sa pultahan nga gitawag Benjamin, gidakop siya sa kapitan sa mga guwardya nga si Iria nga anak ni Shelemia ug apo ni Hanania. Giingnan siya niini, “Kaabin ka sa mga taga-Babilonia.” 14 Mitubag si Jeremias, “Dili kana tinuod! Wala ako makig-abin sa mga taga-Babilonia.” Apan wala mamati si Iria, busa gidakop niya si Jeremias ug gidala ngadto sa mga opisyal. 15 Nasuko pag-ayo ang mga opisyal kang Jeremias. Gipakulata nila siya ug gipriso didto sa gibuhat nilang prisohan—ang balay sa sekretaryo nga si Jonatan. 16 Gisulod nila si Jeremias sa selda ilalom sa yuta ug nagpabilin siyag dugay didto.
17 Unya, gipakuha siya ni Haring Zedekia ug gipadala sa palasyo diin gisekretohan siyag pangutana ni Zedekia, “May mensahe ka ba gikan sa Ginoo?” Mitubag si Jeremias, “Oo, aduna. Itugyan ka ngadto sa hari sa Babilonia.”
18 Unya nangutana si Jeremias sa hari, “Unsa may akong sala nga nahimo kanimo, sa imong mga opisyal, ug sa mga tawo nga gipapriso mo man ako? 19 Hain na man ang inyong mga propeta nga nanagna nga dili ka o kining siyudad sulongon sa hari sa Babilonia? 20 Apan karon, mahal nga hari, kon mahimo paminawa ako. Nagapakilooy ako kanimo. Ayaw na akog ibalik didto sa balay ni Jonatan nga sekretaryo kay mamatay gayod ako didto.”
21 Busa nagmando si Haring Zedekia nga ibutang na lang si Jeremias didto sa hawanan sa mga guwardya sa palasyo. Nagmando usab ang hari nga hatagan si Jeremias ug pan[c] gikan sa mga panadero sa siyudad adlaw-adlaw, hangtod nga aduna pay pan sa siyudad. Busa nagpabilin nga piniriso si Jeremias didto sa hawanan sa mga guwardya.
Gibutang si Jeremias sa Bangag nga Pundohanan ug Tubig
38 Nakadungog sila si Shefatia nga anak ni Matan, Gedalia nga anak ni Pashur, Jehucal nga anak ni Shelemia, ug si Pashur nga anak ni Malkia sa dihang miingon si Jeremias sa mga tawo, “Miingon ang Ginoo nga 2 si bisan kinsa nga magpabilin niini nga siyudad mamatay sa gira, kagutom, ug balatian. Apan ang motahan sa iyang kaugalingon ngadto sa mga taga-Babilonia dili mamatay. Maluwas siya ug mabuhi. 3 Miingon usab ang Ginoo nga sigurado gayong itugyan kini nga siyudad ngadto sa mga taga-Babilonia ug mailog nila kini.”
4 Busa miingon ang mga opisyal ngadto sa hari, “Kinahanglang patyon kining tawhana. Madismaya ug mawad-an sa kaisog ang mga sundalo nga nahibilin niini nga siyudad, apil na ang tanang mga tawo, tungod sa iyang gipanulti kanila. Wala siya magtinguha sa kaayohan sa mga tawo kondili sa ilang kalaglagan.” 5 Mitubag si Haring Zedekia, “Kamo na ang bahala kaniya. Dili ako makapugong kaninyo.”
6 Busa gikuha nila si Jeremias gikan sa giprisohan kaniya ug gitonton nila siya sa bangag nga pundohanan ug tubig didto sa hawanan sa mga guwardya. Ang maong pundohanan ug tubig gipanag-iya ni Malkia nga anak sa hari. Wala na kini tubig apan may lapok, ug halos nalubong si Jeremias didto.
7-8 Apan sa dihang nakabalita si Ebed Melec nga taga-Etiopia[d], nga usa sa mga opisyal sa palasyo, nga gibutang si Jeremias sa bangag nga pundohanan ug tubig, miadto siya sa hari didto sa palasyo. Nagalingkod niadtong higayona ang hari sa pultahan nga gitawag ug Benjamin. Miingon siya sa hari, 9 “Mahal nga hari, daotan gayod kaayo ang gibuhat niining mga tawhana kang Jeremias. Gibutang nila siya sa bangag nga pundohanan ug tubig. Mamatay gayod siya didto sa kagutom kon mahurot na ang pagkaon sa siyudad.” 10 Unya gimandoan sa hari si Ebed Melec, “Pagdala ug 30 ka tawo gikan dinhi ug kuhaa ninyo si Jeremias gikan sa bangag nga pundohanan ug tubig sa dili pa siya mamatay.”
11 Busa nagkuha si Ebed Melec ug mga tawo ug miadto siya sa bodega sa palasyo. Nagkuha si Ebed Melec didto ug mga nuog ug gitonton nila kinig pisi kang Jeremias didto sa bangag nga pundohanan ug tubig. 12 Giingnan ni Ebed Melec si Jeremias, “Ihapin sa imong ilok ang mga nuog aron dili ka masakitan sa pisi.” Gisunod kadto ni Jeremias, 13 ug gibira nila siya gikan sa bangag. Ug nagpabilin nga piniriso si Jeremias didto sa hawanan sa mga guwardya.
Gipatawag Pag-usab ni Haring Zedekia si Jeremias
14 Unya, gipatawag ni Haring Zedekia si Jeremias didto sa ikatulong pultahan sa templo sa Ginoo. Miingon si Zedekia kang Jeremias, “May ipangutana ako kanimo, ug gusto ko nga wala kay itago gikan kanako.”
15 Miingon si Jeremias kang Zedekia, “Kon sultihan ko ikaw sa tinuod, sigurado gayod nga ipapatay mo ako. Ug kon tambagan ko ikaw, dili ka mamati kanako.” 16 Apan sekretong nanumpa si Haring Zedekia kang Jeremias. Ingon niya, “Ipanumpa ko sa Ginoo nga buhi nga nagahatag kanatog kinabuhi, nga dili ko ikaw ipapatay o itugyan sa mga kamot sa gustong mopatay kanimo.”
17 Miingon si Jeremias kang Zedekia, “Mao kini ang gisulti sa Ginoong Dios nga Makagagahom, ang Dios sa Israel: Kon motahan ka sa imong kaugalingon ngadto sa mga opisyal sa hari sa Babilonia, maluwas ang imong kinabuhi ug dili sunogon kining siyudad. Ikaw ug ang imong panimalay mabuhi. 18 Apan kon dili ka motahan sa imong kaugalingon, itugyan kini nga siyudad ngadto sa mga taga-Babilonia, ug sunogon nila kini ug dili ka makaikyas gikan kanila.” 19 Miingon si Haring Zedekia, “Nahadlok ako sa mga Judio nga nakig-abin sa mga taga-Babilonia. Basin itugyan ako sa mga taga-Babilonia ngadto kanila ug panamastamasan nila ako.”
20 Mitubag si Jeremias, “Dili ka itugyan ngadto kanila kon tumanon mo lang ang Ginoo. Kon sundon mo ang ako giingon, maluwas ang imong kinabuhi, ug walay mahitabo kanimo. 21 Apan kon dili ka motahan sa imong kaugalingon, mao kini ang gipadayag kanako sa Ginoo nga mahitabo kanimo: 22 Ang tanang mga babaye nga nahibilin sa imong palasyo dad-on ngadto sa mga opisyal sa hari sa Babilonia. Moingon kining mga babaye kanimo, ‘Gitunto ka lang sa imong suod nga mga higala. Karon nga nalubong sa lapok ang imong mga tiil, gibiyaan ka na nila.’
23 “Ang tanan mong mga asawa ug anak bihagon sa mga taga-Babilonia. Ikaw mismo dili makaikyas kanila. Bihagon ka sa hari sa Babilonia, ug sunogon kining siyudad.”
24 Unya miingon si Zedekia kang Jeremias, “Ayaw gayod ipanugilon ni bisan kinsa ang atong gipanaghisgotan aron dili ka mamatay. 25 Kay kon mahibaloan sa mga opisyal nga nagsultihanay kita unya mangutana sila kanimo, ‘Unsay inyong gipanaghisgotan sa hari? Kon dili ka mosulti patyon ka namo!’ 26 Ingna sila, ‘Nagpakilooy ako sa hari nga dili na ako ibalik sa balay ni Jonatan, kay basin mamatay ako didto.’ ”
27 Ug tuod man, nangadto ang tanang mga opisyal kang Jeremias ug nangutana kaniya. Gitubag niya sila sumala sa gisulti sa hari kaniya. Wala na sila magsigeg pangusisa kay wala may nakadungog sa gipanaghisgotan nila ni Jeremias ug sa hari.
28 Ug nagpabilin nga piniriso si Jeremias didto sa hawanan sa mga guwardya hangtod sa adlaw nga nailog ang Jerusalem.
