Hananiah’s False Prophecy

28 In that same year, at the beginning of the reign of King Zedekiah of Judah,(A) in the fifth month of the fourth year, the prophet Hananiah son of Azzur from Gibeon(B) said to me in the temple of the Lord in the presence of the priests and all the people, “This is what the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon.(C) Within two years I will restore to this place all the articles of the Lord’s temple(D) that King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon took from here and transported to Babylon. And I will restore to this place Jeconiah[a] son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the exiles from Judah(E) who went to Babylon’—this is the Lord’s declaration—‘for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.’”

Jeremiah’s Response to Hananiah

The prophet Jeremiah replied to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the temple of the Lord. The prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen!(F) May the Lord do that. May the Lord make the words you have prophesied come true and may he restore the articles of the Lord’s temple and all the exiles from Babylon to this place! Only listen to this message I am speaking in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. The prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, disaster,[b] and plague against many lands and great kingdoms. As for the prophet who prophesies peace—only when the word of the prophet comes true will the prophet be recognized as one the Lord has truly sent.”(G)

Hananiah Breaks Jeremiah’s Yoke

10 The prophet Hananiah then took the yoke bar from the neck of the prophet Jeremiah and broke it.(H) 11 In the presence of all the people Hananiah proclaimed, “This is what the Lord says: ‘In this way, within two years I will break the yoke of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon from the neck of all the nations.’” The prophet Jeremiah then went on his way.

The Lord’s Word against Hananiah

12 After the prophet Hananiah had broken the yoke bar from the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 13 “Go say to Hananiah, ‘This is what the Lord says: You broke a wooden yoke bar, but in its place you will make an iron yoke bar. 14 For this is what the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says: I have put an iron yoke on the neck of all these nations that they might serve King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon,(I) and they will serve him.(J) I have even put the wild animals under him.’”(K)

15 The prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah, “Listen, Hananiah! The Lord did not send you, but you have led these people to trust in a lie.(L) 16 Therefore, this is what the Lord says: ‘I am about to send you off the face of the earth. You will die this year because you have preached rebellion against the Lord.’”(M) 17 And the prophet Hananiah died that year in the seventh month.

Jeremiah’s Letter to the Exiles

29 This is the text of the letter(N) that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the remaining exiled elders, the priests, the prophets, and all the people Nebuchadnezzar(O) had deported from Jerusalem to Babylon. This was after King Jeconiah,[c](P) the queen mother, the court officials, the officials of Judah and Jerusalem, the craftsmen, and the metalsmiths had left Jerusalem. He sent the letter with Elasah son of Shaphan and Gemariah son of Hilkiah,(Q) whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to Babylon to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. The letter stated:

This is what the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says to all the exiles I deported from Jerusalem to Babylon: “Build houses and live in them.(R) Plant gardens and eat their produce. Find wives for yourselves, and have sons and daughters. Find wives for your sons and give your daughters to men in marriage so that they may bear sons and daughters. Multiply there; do not decrease.(S) Pursue the well-being[d] of the city I have deported you to. Pray to the Lord on its behalf,(T) for when it thrives, you will thrive.”

For this is what the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says: “Don’t let your prophets who are among you(U) and your diviners deceive you,(V) and don’t listen to the dreams you elicit from them, for they are prophesying falsely to you in my name. I have not sent them.”(W) This is the Lord’s declaration.

10 For this is what the Lord says: “When seventy years for Babylon are complete,(X) I will attend to you and will confirm my promise concerning you to restore you to this place. 11 For I know the plans I have for you”(Y)—this is the Lord’s declaration—“plans for your well-being, not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. 12 You will call to me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.(Z) 13 You will seek me(AA) and find me when you search for me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“and I will restore your fortunes[e](AB) and gather you from all the nations and places where I banished you”—this is the Lord’s declaration. “I will restore you to the place from which I deported you.”(AC)

15 You have said, “The Lord has raised up prophets for us in Babylon!” 16 But this is what the Lord says concerning the king sitting on David’s throne(AD) and concerning all the people living in this city—that is, concerning your brothers who did not go with you into exile. 17 This is what the Lord of Armies says: “I am about to send sword, famine, and plague against them,(AE) and I will make them like rotten figs that are inedible because they are so bad. 18 I will pursue them with sword, famine, and plague. I will make them a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth—a curse and a desolation, an object of scorn and a disgrace among all the nations(AF) where I have banished them.(AG) 19 I will do this because they have not listened to my words”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“the words that I sent to them with my servants the prophets time and time again.[f](AH) And you too have not listened.” This is the Lord’s declaration.

20 Hear the word of the Lord, all you exiles I have sent from Jerusalem to Babylon.(AI) 21 This is what the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says about Ahab son of Kolaiah and concerning Zedekiah son of Maaseiah, the ones prophesying a lie to you in my name:(AJ) “I am about to hand them over to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, and he will kill them before your very eyes. 22 Based on what happens to them, all the exiles of Judah who are in Babylon will create a curse(AK) that says, ‘May the Lord make you like Zedekiah and Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire!’ (AL) 23 because they have committed an outrage(AM) in Israel by committing adultery with their neighbors’ wives and have spoken in my name a lie, which I did not command them. I am he who knows, and I am a witness.” This is the Lord’s declaration.

24 To Shemaiah the Nehelamite you are to say, 25 “This is what the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says: You[g] in your own name have sent out letters to all the people of Jerusalem, to the priest Zephaniah(AN) son of Maaseiah, and to all the priests, saying, 26 ‘The Lord has appointed you priest in place of the priest Jehoiada to be the chief officer(AO) in the temple of the Lord, responsible for every madman(AP) who acts like a prophet. You must confine him in the stocks(AQ) and an iron collar. 27 So now, why have you not rebuked Jeremiah of Anathoth who has been acting like a prophet among you?(AR) 28 For he has sent word to us in Babylon, claiming, “The exile will be long. Build houses and settle down. Plant gardens and eat their produce.”’” (AS)

29 The priest Zephaniah read this letter in the hearing of the prophet Jeremiah.

A Message about Shemaiah

30 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 31 “Send a message to all the exiles, saying, ‘This is what the Lord says concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite. Because Shemaiah prophesied to you, though I did not send him, and made you trust a lie,(AT) 32 this is what the Lord says: I am about to punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his descendants. There will not be even one of his descendants living among these people,(AU) nor will any ever see the good that I will bring to my people—this is the Lord’s declaration—for he has preached rebellion against the Lord.’”(AV)

Restoration from Captivity

30 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord. “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Write on a scroll all the words that I have spoken to you,(AW) for look, the days are coming”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“when I will restore the fortunes[h] of my people Israel and Judah,”(AX) says the Lord. “I will restore them to the land I gave to their ancestors and they will possess it.”

These are the words the Lord spoke to Israel and Judah. This is what the Lord says:

We have heard a cry of terror,
of dread—there is no peace.
Ask and see
whether a male can give birth.
Why then do I see every man
with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor
and every face turned pale?(AY)
How awful that day will be!(AZ)
There will be no other like it!(BA)
It will be a time of trouble for Jacob,
but he will be saved out of it.
On that day—
this is the declaration of the Lord of Armies—
I will break his yoke from your neck(BB)
and tear off your chains,(BC)
and strangers will never again enslave him.(BD)
They will serve the Lord their God
and David their king,
whom I will raise up for them.(BE)
10 As for you, my servant Jacob,(BF)
do not be afraid—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
and do not be discouraged, Israel,
for without fail I will save you out of a distant place,
your descendants, from the land of their captivity!
Jacob will return and have calm and quiet
with no one to frighten him.(BG)
11 For I will be with you—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
to save you!(BH)
I will bring destruction on all the nations
where I have scattered you;
however, I will not bring destruction on you.
I will discipline you justly,
and I will by no means leave you unpunished.(BI)

Healing Zion’s Wounds

12 For this is what the Lord says:

Your injury is incurable;
your wound most severe.(BJ)
13 You have no defender for your case.(BK)
There is no remedy for your sores,
and no healing for you.[i]
14 All your lovers have forgotten you;(BL)
they no longer look for you,
for I have struck you as an enemy would,
with the discipline(BM) of someone cruel,(BN)
because of your enormous guilt
and your innumerable sins.
15 Why do you cry out about your injury?
Your pain has no cure!
I have done these things to you
because of your enormous guilt
and your innumerable sins.(BO)
16 Nevertheless, all who devoured you will be devoured,(BP)
and all your adversaries—all of them—
will go off into exile.
Those who plunder you will be plundered,
and all who raid you will be raided.(BQ)
17 But I will bring you health(BR)
and will heal you of your wounds—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
for they call you Outcast,
Zion whom no one cares about.

Restoration of the Land

18 This is what the Lord says:

I will certainly restore the fortunes[j] of Jacob’s tents(BS)
and show compassion(BT) on his dwellings.
Every city will be rebuilt on its mound;
every citadel will stand on its proper site.
19 Thanksgiving will come out of them,
a sound of rejoicing.
I will multiply them, and they will not decrease;(BU)
I will honor them, and they will not be insignificant.
20 His children will be as in past days;
his congregation will be established in my presence.
I will punish all his oppressors.(BV)
21 Jacob’s leader will be one of them;
his ruler will issue from him.
I will invite him to me, and he will approach me,(BW)
for who would otherwise risk his life to approach me?
This is the Lord’s declaration.
22 You will be my people,
and I will be your God.(BX)

The Wrath of God

23 Look, a storm from the Lord!(BY)
Wrath has gone out,
a churning storm.
It will whirl about the heads of the wicked.
24 The Lord’s burning anger will not turn back
until he has completely fulfilled the purposes of his heart.
In time to come you will understand it.(BZ)

God’s Relationship with His People

31 “At that time”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“I will be the God of all the families of Israel,(CA) and they will be my people.”

This is what the Lord says:

The people who survived the sword
found favor in the wilderness.(CB)
When Israel went to find rest,(CC)
the Lord appeared to him[k] from far away.
I have loved you with an everlasting love;(CD)
therefore, I have continued to extend faithful love to you.(CE)
Again I will build you so that you will be rebuilt,
Virgin Israel.(CF)
You will take up your tambourines again(CG)
and go out in joyful dancing.
You will plant vineyards again(CH)
on the mountains of Samaria;
the planters will plant and will enjoy the fruit.(CI)
For there will be a day when watchmen will call out
in the hill country of Ephraim,
“Come, let’s go up to Zion,(CJ)
to the Lord our God!”

God’s People Brought Home

For this is what the Lord says:

Sing with joy for Jacob;
shout for the foremost of the nations!
Proclaim, praise, and say,
Lord, save your people,(CK)
the remnant of Israel!” (CL)
Watch! I am going to bring them from the northern land.
I will gather them from remote regions of the earth(CM)
the blind and the lame will be with them,(CN)
along with those who are pregnant and those about to give birth.
They will return here as a great assembly!(CO)
They will come weeping,
but I will bring them back with consolation.[l](CP)
I will lead them to wadis filled with water,
by a smooth way where they will not stumble,(CQ)
for I am Israel’s Father,
and Ephraim is my firstborn.(CR)
10 Nations, hear the word of the Lord,
and tell it among the far off coasts and islands!(CS)
Say, “The one who scattered Israel will gather him.(CT)
He will watch over him as a shepherd guards his flock,
11 for the Lord has ransomed Jacob
and redeemed him from the power of one stronger than he.”(CU)
12 They will come and shout for joy on the heights of Zion;(CV)
they will be radiant with joy(CW)
because of the Lord’s goodness,
because of the grain, the new wine, the fresh oil,(CX)
and because of the young of the flocks and herds.
Their life will be like an irrigated garden,
and they will no longer grow weak from hunger.
13 Then the young women will rejoice with dancing,
while young and old men rejoice together.
I will turn their mourning into joy,(CY)
give them consolation,
and bring happiness out of grief.
14 I will refresh the priests with an abundance,[m](CZ)
and my people will be satisfied with my goodness.
This is the Lord’s declaration.

Lament Turned to Joy

15 This is what the Lord says:

A voice was heard in Ramah,(DA)
a lament with bitter weeping—
Rachel weeping for her children,
refusing to be comforted for her children
because they are no more.(DB)

16 This is what the Lord says:

Keep your voice from weeping
and your eyes from tears,
for the reward for your work will come—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
and your children will return from the enemy’s land.
17 There is hope for your future(DC)
this is the Lord’s declaration—
and your children will return to their own territory.
18 I have surely heard Ephraim moaning,
“You disciplined me, and I have been disciplined
like an untrained calf.(DD)
Take me back, so that I can return,
for you, Lord, are my God.(DE)
19 After my return, I felt regret;
After I was instructed, I struck my thigh in grief.(DF)
I was ashamed and humiliated(DG)
because I bore the disgrace of my youth.”
20 Isn’t Ephraim a precious son to me,
a delightful child?(DH)
Whenever I speak against him,
I certainly still think about him.
Therefore, my inner being yearns for him;
I will truly have compassion on him.(DI)
This is the Lord’s declaration.

Repentance and Restoration

21 Set up road markers(DJ) for yourself;
establish signposts!
Keep the highway in mind,
the way you have traveled.
Return, Virgin Israel!
Return to these cities of yours.
22 How long will you turn here and there,
faithless daughter?(DK)
For the Lord creates something new in the land[n]
a female[o] will shelter[p] a man.

23 This is what the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says: “When I restore their fortunes,[q] they will once again speak this word in the land of Judah and in its cities: ‘May the Lord bless you, righteous settlement,(DL) holy mountain.’(DM) 24 Judah and all its cities will live in it together—also farmers and those who move[r] with the flocks— 25 for I satisfy the thirsty person and feed all those who are weak.”(DN)

26 At this I awoke and looked around. My sleep had been most pleasant to me.

27 “Look, the days are coming”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“when I will sow the house of Israel(DO) and the house of Judah with the seed of people and the seed of animals. 28 Just as I watched over them to uproot and to tear them down, to demolish and to destroy, and to cause disaster,(DP) so will I watch over them to build and to plant them”(DQ)—this is the Lord’s declaration. 29 “In those days, it will never again be said,

‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes,
and the children’s teeth are set on edge.’(DR)

30 Rather, each will die for his own iniquity.(DS) Anyone who eats sour grapes—his own teeth will be set on edge.

The New Covenant

31 “Look, the days are coming”(DT)—this is the Lord’s declaration—“when I will make a new covenant(DU) with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. 32 This one will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors on the day I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt—my covenant that they broke even though I am their master”[s](DV)—the Lord’s declaration. 33 “Instead, this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days”—the Lord’s declaration. “I will put my teaching within them and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 No longer will one teach his neighbor or his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’(DW) for they will all know me, from the least to the greatest of them”(DX)—this is the Lord’s declaration. “For I will forgive their iniquity(DY) and never again remember their sin.

35 “This is what the Lord says:

The one who gives the sun for light by day,
the fixed order of moon and stars for light by night,
who stirs up the sea and makes its waves roar(DZ)
the Lord of Armies is his name:
36 If this fixed order departs from before me—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
only then will Israel’s descendants cease
to be a nation before me forever.(EA)

37 “This is what the Lord says:

Only if the heavens above can be measured
and the foundations of the earth below explored,
will I reject all of Israel’s descendants
because of all they have done—
this is the Lord’s declaration.

38 “Look, the days are coming”—the Lord’s declaration—“when the city[t] from the Tower of Hananel(EB) to the Corner Gate(EC) will be rebuilt for the Lord. 39 A measuring line will once again stretch out straight to the hill of Gareb(ED) and then turn toward Goah. 40 The whole valley—the corpses, the ashes, and all the fields as far as the Kidron Valley(EE) to the corner of the Horse Gate(EF) to the east—will be holy to the Lord. It will never be uprooted or demolished again.”

Jeremiah’s Land Purchase

32 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the tenth year of King Zedekiah(EG) of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar.(EH) At that time, the army of the king of Babylon was besieging Jerusalem,(EI) and the prophet Jeremiah was imprisoned in the guard’s courtyard(EJ) in the palace of the king of Judah. King Zedekiah of Judah had imprisoned him, saying, “Why are you prophesying as you do? You say, ‘This is what the Lord says: Look, I am about to hand this city over to Babylon’s king, and he will capture it. King Zedekiah of Judah will not escape from the Chaldeans; indeed, he will certainly be handed over to Babylon’s king. They will speak face to face[u] and meet eye to eye.(EK) He will take Zedekiah to Babylon, where he will stay until I attend to him—this is the Lord’s declaration. For you will fight the Chaldeans, but you will not succeed.’”(EL)

Jeremiah replied, “The word of the Lord came to me: Watch! Hanamel, the son of your uncle Shallum, is coming to you to say, ‘Buy my field in Anathoth(EM) for yourself, for you own the right of redemption(EN) to buy it.’

“Then, as the Lord had said, my cousin Hanamel came to the guard’s courtyard and urged me, ‘Please buy my field in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, for you own the right of inheritance and redemption. Buy it for yourself.’ Then I knew that this was the word of the Lord. So I bought the field in Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel, and I weighed out the silver to him(EO)—seventeen shekels[v] of silver. 10 I recorded it on a scroll,(EP) sealed it, called in witnesses, and weighed out the silver on the scales. 11 I took the purchase agreement—the sealed copy with its terms and conditions and the open copy— 12 and gave the purchase agreement to Baruch(EQ) son of Neriah, son of Mahseiah. I did this in the sight of my cousin[w] Hanamel, the witnesses who had signed the purchase agreement, and all the Judeans sitting in the guard’s courtyard.

13 “I charged Baruch in their sight, 14 ‘This is what the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says: Take these scrolls—this purchase agreement with the sealed copy and this open copy—and put them in an earthen storage jar so they will last a long time. 15 For this is what the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says: Houses, fields, and vineyards will again be bought in this land.’(ER)

16 “After I had given the purchase agreement to Baruch, son of Neriah, I prayed to the Lord:(ES) 17 Oh, Lord God! You yourself made the heavens and earth(ET) by your great power(EU) and with your outstretched arm. Nothing is too difficult for you!(EV) 18 You show faithful love to thousands but lay the fathers’ iniquity on their sons’ laps after them,(EW) great and mighty God(EX) whose name is the Lord of Armies, 19 the one great in counsel and powerful in action. Your eyes are on all the ways of the children of men[x] in order to reward each person according to his ways and as the result of his actions.(EY) 20 You performed signs and wonders in the land of Egypt(EZ) and still do today, both in Israel and among all mankind. You made a name(FA) for yourself, as is the case today. 21 You brought your people Israel out of Egypt with signs and wonders, with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, and with great terror.(FB) 22 You gave them this land you swore to give to their ancestors, a land flowing with milk and honey.(FC) 23 They entered and possessed it, but they did not obey you or live according to your instructions.(FD) They failed to perform all you commanded them to do,(FE) and so you have brought all this disaster on them. 24 Look! Siege ramps(FF) have come against the city to capture it, and the city, as a result of the sword, famine, and plague, has been handed over to the Chaldeans who are fighting against it. What you have spoken has happened. Look, you can see it! 25 Yet you, Lord God, have said to me, ‘Purchase the field and call in witnesses’—even though the city has been handed over to the Chaldeans!”

26 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 27 “Look, I am the Lord, the God over every creature.(FG) Is anything too difficult for me?(FH) 28 Therefore, this is what the Lord says: I am about to hand this city over to the Chaldeans,(FI) to Babylon’s king Nebuchadnezzar, and he will capture it. 29 The Chaldeans who are fighting against this city will come and set this city on fire. They will burn it, including the houses where incense has been burned to Baal on their rooftops and where drink offerings have been poured out to other gods to anger me.(FJ) 30 From their youth, the Israelites and Judeans have done nothing but what is evil in my sight! They have done nothing but anger me by the work of their hands”(FK)—this is the Lord’s declaration— 31 “for this city has caused my wrath and fury from the day it was built until now. I will therefore remove it from my presence(FL) 32 because of all the evil the Israelites and Judeans have done to anger me—they, their kings,(FM) their officials, their priests, and their prophets, the men of Judah, and the residents of Jerusalem. 33 They have turned their backs to me and not their faces.(FN) Though I taught them time and time again,[y](FO) they do not listen and receive discipline. 34 They have placed their abhorrent things(FP) in the house that bears my name and have defiled it. 35 They have built the high places of Baal in Ben Hinnom Valley to sacrifice their sons and daughters in the fire[z] to Molech(FQ)—something I had not commanded them. I had never entertained the thought[aa] that they do this detestable act causing Judah to sin!

36 “Now therefore, this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to this city about which you said, ‘It has been handed over to Babylon’s king through sword, famine, and plague’: 37 I will certainly gather them from all the lands where I have banished them in my anger, fury, and intense wrath, and I will return them to this place and make them live in safety.(FR) 38 They will be my people, and I will be their God.(FS) 39 I will give them integrity of heart(FT) and action[ab] so that they will fear me always, for their good and for the good of their descendants after them.

40 “I will make a permanent covenant with them:(FU) I will never turn away from doing good to them, and I will put fear of me in their hearts so they will never again turn away from me.(FV) 41 I will take delight in them to do what is good for them, and with all my heart and mind I will faithfully plant them in this land.(FW)

42 “For this is what the Lord says: Just as I have brought all this terrible disaster on these people,(FX) so am I about to bring on them all the good I am promising them. 43 Fields will be bought in this land about which you are saying,(FY) ‘It’s a desolation(FZ) without people or animals; it has been handed over to the Chaldeans!’ 44 Fields will be purchased, the transaction written on a scroll and sealed,(GA) and witnesses will be called on in the land of Benjamin,(GB) in the areas surrounding Jerusalem, and in Judah’s cities—the cities of the hill country, the cities of the Judean foothills, and the cities of the Negev—because I will restore their fortunes.”[ac]

This is the Lord’s declaration.

The False Prophet Hananiah

28 In the fifth month of that same year, the fourth year, early in the reign of Zedekiah(A) king of Judah, the prophet Hananiah son of Azzur, who was from Gibeon,(B) said to me in the house of the Lord in the presence of the priests and all the people: “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘I will break the yoke(C) of the king of Babylon. Within two years I will bring back to this place all the articles(D) of the Lord’s house that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon removed from here and took to Babylon. I will also bring back to this place Jehoiachin[a](E) son of Jehoiakim king of Judah and all the other exiles from Judah who went to Babylon,’ declares the Lord, ‘for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.’”(F)

Then the prophet Jeremiah replied to the prophet Hananiah before the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord. He said, “Amen! May the Lord do so! May the Lord fulfill the words you have prophesied by bringing the articles of the Lord’s house and all the exiles back to this place from Babylon.(G) Nevertheless, listen to what I have to say in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people: From early times the prophets who preceded you and me have prophesied war, disaster and plague(H) against many countries and great kingdoms. But the prophet who prophesies peace will be recognized as one truly sent by the Lord only if his prediction comes true.(I)

10 Then the prophet Hananiah took the yoke(J) off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah and broke it, 11 and he said(K) before all the people, “This is what the Lord says: ‘In the same way I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon off the neck of all the nations within two years.’” At this, the prophet Jeremiah went on his way.

12 After the prophet Hananiah had broken the yoke off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 13 “Go and tell Hananiah, ‘This is what the Lord says: You have broken a wooden yoke, but in its place you will get a yoke of iron. 14 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: I will put an iron yoke(L) on the necks of all these nations to make them serve(M) Nebuchadnezzar(N) king of Babylon, and they will serve him. I will even give him control over the wild animals.(O)’”

15 Then the prophet Jeremiah said to Hananiah the prophet, “Listen, Hananiah! The Lord has not sent(P) you, yet you have persuaded this nation to trust in lies.(Q) 16 Therefore this is what the Lord says: ‘I am about to remove you from the face of the earth.(R) This very year you are going to die,(S) because you have preached rebellion(T) against the Lord.’”

17 In the seventh month of that same year, Hananiah the prophet died.(U)

A Letter to the Exiles

29 This is the text of the letter(V) that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the surviving elders among the exiles and to the priests, the prophets and all the other people Nebuchadnezzar had carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon.(W) (This was after King Jehoiachin[b](X) and the queen mother,(Y) the court officials and the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the skilled workers and the artisans had gone into exile from Jerusalem.) He entrusted the letter to Elasah son of Shaphan and to Gemariah son of Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to King Nebuchadnezzar in Babylon. It said:

This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those I carried(Z) into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: “Build(AA) houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease.(AB) Also, seek(AC) the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray(AD) to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” Yes, this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “Do not let the prophets(AE) and diviners among you deceive(AF) you. Do not listen to the dreams(AG) you encourage them to have.(AH) They are prophesying lies(AI) to you in my name. I have not sent(AJ) them,” declares the Lord.

10 This is what the Lord says: “When seventy years(AK) are completed for Babylon, I will come to you(AL) and fulfill my good promise(AM) to bring you back(AN) to this place. 11 For I know the plans(AO) I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper(AP) you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.(AQ) 12 Then you will call(AR) on me and come and pray(AS) to me, and I will listen(AT) to you. 13 You will seek(AU) me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.(AV) 14 I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back(AW) from captivity.[c] I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.”(AX)

15 You may say, “The Lord has raised up prophets for us in Babylon,” 16 but this is what the Lord says about the king who sits on David’s throne and all the people who remain in this city, your fellow citizens who did not go with you into exile— 17 yes, this is what the Lord Almighty says: “I will send the sword, famine and plague(AY) against them and I will make them like figs(AZ) that are so bad they cannot be eaten. 18 I will pursue them with the sword, famine and plague and will make them abhorrent(BA) to all the kingdoms of the earth, a curse[d](BB) and an object of horror,(BC) of scorn(BD) and reproach, among all the nations where I drive them. 19 For they have not listened to my words,”(BE) declares the Lord, “words that I sent to them again and again(BF) by my servants the prophets.(BG) And you exiles have not listened either,” declares the Lord.

20 Therefore, hear the word of the Lord, all you exiles whom I have sent(BH) away from Jerusalem to Babylon. 21 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says about Ahab son of Kolaiah and Zedekiah son of Maaseiah, who are prophesying lies(BI) to you in my name: “I will deliver them into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he will put them to death before your very eyes. 22 Because of them, all the exiles from Judah who are in Babylon will use this curse: ‘May the Lord treat you like Zedekiah and Ahab, whom the king of Babylon burned(BJ) in the fire.’ 23 For they have done outrageous things in Israel; they have committed adultery(BK) with their neighbors’ wives, and in my name they have uttered lies—which I did not authorize. I know(BL) it and am a witness(BM) to it,” declares the Lord.

Message to Shemaiah

24 Tell Shemaiah the Nehelamite, 25 “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You sent letters in your own name to all the people in Jerusalem, to the priest Zephaniah(BN) son of Maaseiah, and to all the other priests. You said to Zephaniah, 26 ‘The Lord has appointed you priest in place of Jehoiada to be in charge of the house of the Lord; you should put any maniac(BO) who acts like a prophet into the stocks(BP) and neck-irons. 27 So why have you not reprimanded Jeremiah from Anathoth, who poses as a prophet among you? 28 He has sent this message(BQ) to us in Babylon: It will be a long time.(BR) Therefore build(BS) houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce.’”

29 Zephaniah(BT) the priest, however, read the letter to Jeremiah the prophet. 30 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 31 “Send this message to all the exiles: ‘This is what the Lord says about Shemaiah(BU) the Nehelamite: Because Shemaiah has prophesied to you, even though I did not send(BV) him, and has persuaded you to trust in lies, 32 this is what the Lord says: I will surely punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his descendants.(BW) He will have no one left among this people, nor will he see the good(BX) things I will do for my people, declares the Lord, because he has preached rebellion(BY) against me.’”

Restoration of Israel

30 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Write(BZ) in a book all the words I have spoken to you. The days(CA) are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will bring(CB) my people Israel and Judah back from captivity[e] and restore(CC) them to the land I gave their ancestors to possess,’ says the Lord.”

These are the words the Lord spoke concerning Israel and Judah: “This is what the Lord says:

“‘Cries of fear(CD) are heard—
    terror, not peace.
Ask and see:
    Can a man bear children?
Then why do I see every strong man
    with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor,(CE)
    every face turned deathly pale?(CF)
How awful that day(CG) will be!
    No other will be like it.
It will be a time of trouble(CH) for Jacob,
    but he will be saved(CI) out of it.

“‘In that day,’ declares the Lord Almighty,
    ‘I will break the yoke(CJ) off their necks
and will tear off their bonds;(CK)
    no longer will foreigners enslave them.(CL)
Instead, they will serve the Lord their God
    and David(CM) their king,(CN)
    whom I will raise up for them.

10 “‘So do not be afraid,(CO) Jacob my servant;(CP)
    do not be dismayed, Israel,’
declares the Lord.
‘I will surely save(CQ) you out of a distant place,
    your descendants from the land of their exile.
Jacob will again have peace and security,(CR)
    and no one will make him afraid.(CS)
11 I am with you(CT) and will save you,’
    declares the Lord.
‘Though I completely destroy all the nations
    among which I scatter you,
    I will not completely destroy(CU) you.
I will discipline(CV) you but only in due measure;
    I will not let you go entirely unpunished.’(CW)

12 “This is what the Lord says:

“‘Your wound(CX) is incurable,
    your injury beyond healing.(CY)
13 There is no one to plead your cause,(CZ)
    no remedy for your sore,
    no healing(DA) for you.
14 All your allies(DB) have forgotten you;
    they care nothing for you.
I have struck you as an enemy(DC) would
    and punished you as would the cruel,(DD)
because your guilt is so great
    and your sins(DE) so many.
15 Why do you cry out over your wound,
    your pain that has no cure?(DF)
Because of your great guilt and many sins
    I have done these things to you.(DG)

16 “‘But all who devour(DH) you will be devoured;
    all your enemies will go into exile.(DI)
Those who plunder(DJ) you will be plundered;
    all who make spoil of you I will despoil.
17 But I will restore you to health
    and heal(DK) your wounds,’
declares the Lord,
‘because you are called an outcast,(DL)
    Zion for whom no one cares.’(DM)

18 “This is what the Lord says:

“‘I will restore the fortunes(DN) of Jacob’s tents(DO)
    and have compassion(DP) on his dwellings;
the city will be rebuilt(DQ) on her ruins,
    and the palace will stand in its proper place.
19 From them will come songs(DR) of thanksgiving(DS)
    and the sound of rejoicing.(DT)
I will add to their numbers,(DU)
    and they will not be decreased;
I will bring them honor,(DV)
    and they will not be disdained.
20 Their children(DW) will be as in days of old,
    and their community will be established(DX) before me;
    I will punish(DY) all who oppress them.
21 Their leader(DZ) will be one of their own;
    their ruler will arise from among them.(EA)
I will bring him near(EB) and he will come close to me—
    for who is he who will devote himself
    to be close to me?’
declares the Lord.
22 “‘So you will be my people,(EC)
    and I will be your God.(ED)’”

23 See, the storm(EE) of the Lord
    will burst out in wrath,
a driving wind swirling down
    on the heads of the wicked.
24 The fierce anger(EF) of the Lord will not turn back(EG)
    until he fully accomplishes
    the purposes of his heart.
In days to come
    you will understand(EH) this.

31 “At that time,” declares the Lord, “I will be the God(EI) of all the families of Israel, and they will be my people.”

This is what the Lord says:

“The people who survive the sword
    will find favor(EJ) in the wilderness;
    I will come to give rest(EK) to Israel.”

The Lord appeared to us in the past,[f] saying:

“I have loved(EL) you with an everlasting love;
    I have drawn(EM) you with unfailing kindness.
I will build you up again,
    and you, Virgin(EN) Israel, will be rebuilt.(EO)
Again you will take up your timbrels(EP)
    and go out to dance(EQ) with the joyful.(ER)
Again you will plant(ES) vineyards
    on the hills of Samaria;(ET)
the farmers will plant them
    and enjoy their fruit.(EU)
There will be a day when watchmen(EV) cry out
    on the hills of Ephraim,
‘Come, let us go up to Zion,
    to the Lord our God.’”(EW)

This is what the Lord says:

“Sing(EX) with joy for Jacob;
    shout for the foremost(EY) of the nations.
Make your praises heard, and say,
    Lord, save(EZ) your people,
    the remnant(FA) of Israel.’
See, I will bring them from the land of the north(FB)
    and gather(FC) them from the ends of the earth.
Among them will be the blind(FD) and the lame,(FE)
    expectant mothers and women in labor;
    a great throng will return.
They will come with weeping;(FF)
    they will pray as I bring them back.
I will lead(FG) them beside streams of water(FH)
    on a level(FI) path where they will not stumble,
because I am Israel’s father,(FJ)
    and Ephraim is my firstborn son.

10 “Hear the word of the Lord, you nations;
    proclaim it in distant coastlands:(FK)
‘He who scattered(FL) Israel will gather(FM) them
    and will watch over his flock like a shepherd.’(FN)
11 For the Lord will deliver Jacob
    and redeem(FO) them from the hand of those stronger(FP) than they.
12 They will come and shout for joy(FQ) on the heights(FR) of Zion;
    they will rejoice in the bounty(FS) of the Lord
the grain, the new wine and the olive oil,(FT)
    the young of the flocks(FU) and herds.
They will be like a well-watered garden,(FV)
    and they will sorrow(FW) no more.
13 Then young women will dance and be glad,
    young men and old as well.
I will turn their mourning(FX) into gladness;
    I will give them comfort(FY) and joy(FZ) instead of sorrow.
14 I will satisfy(GA) the priests(GB) with abundance,
    and my people will be filled with my bounty,(GC)
declares the Lord.

15 This is what the Lord says:

“A voice is heard in Ramah,(GD)
    mourning and great weeping,
Rachel weeping for her children
    and refusing to be comforted,(GE)
    because they are no more.”(GF)

16 This is what the Lord says:

“Restrain your voice from weeping
    and your eyes from tears,(GG)
for your work will be rewarded,(GH)
declares the Lord.
    “They will return(GI) from the land of the enemy.
17 So there is hope(GJ) for your descendants,”
declares the Lord.
    “Your children(GK) will return to their own land.

18 “I have surely heard Ephraim’s moaning:
    ‘You disciplined(GL) me like an unruly calf,(GM)
    and I have been disciplined.
Restore(GN) me, and I will return,
    because you are the Lord my God.
19 After I strayed,(GO)
    I repented;
after I came to understand,
    I beat(GP) my breast.
I was ashamed(GQ) and humiliated
    because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’(GR)
20 Is not Ephraim my dear son,
    the child(GS) in whom I delight?
Though I often speak against him,
    I still remember(GT) him.
Therefore my heart yearns for him;
    I have great compassion(GU) for him,”
declares the Lord.

21 “Set up road signs;
    put up guideposts.(GV)
Take note of the highway,(GW)
    the road that you take.
Return,(GX) Virgin(GY) Israel,
    return to your towns.
22 How long will you wander,(GZ)
    unfaithful(HA) Daughter Israel?
The Lord will create a new thing(HB) on earth—
    the woman will return to[g](HC) the man.”

23 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “When I bring them back from captivity,[h](HD) the people in the land of Judah and in its towns will once again use these words: ‘The Lord bless(HE) you, you prosperous city,(HF) you sacred mountain.’(HG) 24 People will live(HH) together in Judah and all its towns—farmers and those who move about with their flocks.(HI) 25 I will refresh the weary(HJ) and satisfy the faint.”(HK)

26 At this I awoke(HL) and looked around. My sleep had been pleasant to me.

27 “The days are coming,”(HM) declares the Lord, “when I will plant(HN) the kingdoms of Israel and Judah with the offspring of people and of animals. 28 Just as I watched(HO) over them to uproot(HP) and tear down, and to overthrow, destroy and bring disaster,(HQ) so I will watch over them to build and to plant,”(HR) declares the Lord. 29 “In those days people will no longer say,

‘The parents(HS) have eaten sour grapes,
    and the children’s teeth are set on edge.’(HT)

30 Instead, everyone will die for their own sin;(HU) whoever eats sour grapes—their own teeth will be set on edge.

31 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord,
    “when I will make a new covenant(HV)
with the people of Israel
    and with the people of Judah.
32 It will not be like the covenant(HW)
    I made with their ancestors(HX)
when I took them by the hand
    to lead them out of Egypt,(HY)
because they broke my covenant,
    though I was a husband(HZ) to[i] them,[j]
declares the Lord.
33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel
    after that time,” declares the Lord.
“I will put my law in their minds(IA)
    and write it on their hearts.(IB)
I will be their God,
    and they will be my people.(IC)
34 No longer will they teach(ID) their neighbor,
    or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’
because they will all know(IE) me,
    from the least of them to the greatest,”
declares the Lord.
“For I will forgive(IF) their wickedness
    and will remember their sins(IG) no more.”

35 This is what the Lord says,

he who appoints(IH) the sun
    to shine by day,
who decrees the moon and stars
    to shine by night,(II)
who stirs up the sea(IJ)
    so that its waves roar(IK)
    the Lord Almighty is his name:(IL)
36 “Only if these decrees(IM) vanish from my sight,”
    declares the Lord,
“will Israel(IN) ever cease
    being a nation before me.”

37 This is what the Lord says:

“Only if the heavens above can be measured(IO)
    and the foundations of the earth below be searched out
will I reject(IP) all the descendants of Israel
    because of all they have done,”
declares the Lord.

38 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when this city will be rebuilt(IQ) for me from the Tower of Hananel(IR) to the Corner Gate.(IS) 39 The measuring line(IT) will stretch from there straight to the hill of Gareb and then turn to Goah. 40 The whole valley(IU) where dead bodies(IV) and ashes are thrown, and all the terraces out to the Kidron Valley(IW) on the east as far as the corner of the Horse Gate,(IX) will be holy(IY) to the Lord. The city will never again be uprooted or demolished.”

Jeremiah Buys a Field

32 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the tenth(IZ) year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth(JA) year of Nebuchadnezzar. The army of the king of Babylon was then besieging(JB) Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was confined(JC) in the courtyard of the guard(JD) in the royal palace of Judah.

Now Zedekiah king of Judah had imprisoned him there, saying, “Why do you prophesy(JE) as you do? You say, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will capture(JF) it. Zedekiah(JG) king of Judah will not escape(JH) the Babylonians[k](JI) but will certainly be given into the hands of the king of Babylon, and will speak with him face to face and see him with his own eyes. He will take(JJ) Zedekiah to Babylon, where he will remain until I deal with him,(JK) declares the Lord. If you fight against the Babylonians, you will not succeed.’”(JL)

Jeremiah said, “The word of the Lord came to me: Hanamel son of Shallum your uncle is going to come to you and say, ‘Buy my field at Anathoth,(JM) because as nearest relative it is your right and duty(JN) to buy it.’

“Then, just as the Lord had said, my cousin Hanamel came to me in the courtyard of the guard and said, ‘Buy my field(JO) at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin. Since it is your right to redeem it and possess it, buy it for yourself.’

“I knew that this was the word of the Lord; so I bought the field(JP) at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel and weighed out for him seventeen shekels[l] of silver.(JQ) 10 I signed and sealed the deed,(JR) had it witnessed,(JS) and weighed out the silver on the scales. 11 I took the deed of purchase—the sealed copy containing the terms and conditions, as well as the unsealed copy— 12 and I gave this deed to Baruch(JT) son of Neriah,(JU) the son of Mahseiah, in the presence of my cousin Hanamel and of the witnesses who had signed the deed and of all the Jews sitting in the courtyard of the guard.

13 “In their presence I gave Baruch these instructions: 14 ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Take these documents, both the sealed(JV) and unsealed copies of the deed of purchase, and put them in a clay jar so they will last a long time. 15 For this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Houses, fields and vineyards will again be bought in this land.’(JW)

16 “After I had given the deed of purchase to Baruch(JX) son of Neriah, I prayed to the Lord:

17 “Ah, Sovereign Lord,(JY) you have made the heavens and the earth(JZ) by your great power and outstretched arm.(KA) Nothing is too hard(KB) for you. 18 You show love(KC) to thousands but bring the punishment for the parents’ sins into the laps(KD) of their children(KE) after them. Great and mighty God,(KF) whose name is the Lord Almighty,(KG) 19 great are your purposes and mighty are your deeds.(KH) Your eyes are open to the ways of all mankind;(KI) you reward each person according to their conduct and as their deeds deserve.(KJ) 20 You performed signs and wonders(KK) in Egypt(KL) and have continued them to this day, in Israel and among all mankind, and have gained the renown(KM) that is still yours. 21 You brought your people Israel out of Egypt with signs and wonders, by a mighty hand(KN) and an outstretched arm(KO) and with great terror.(KP) 22 You gave them this land you had sworn to give their ancestors, a land flowing with milk and honey.(KQ) 23 They came in and took possession(KR) of it, but they did not obey you or follow your law;(KS) they did not do what you commanded them to do. So you brought all this disaster(KT) on them.

24 “See how the siege ramps(KU) are built up to take the city. Because of the sword, famine and plague,(KV) the city will be given into the hands of the Babylonians who are attacking it. What you said(KW) has happened,(KX) as you now see. 25 And though the city will be given into the hands of the Babylonians, you, Sovereign Lord, say to me, ‘Buy the field(KY) with silver and have the transaction witnessed.(KZ)’”

26 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 27 “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind.(LA) Is anything too hard for me?(LB) 28 Therefore this is what the Lord says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the Babylonians and to Nebuchadnezzar(LC) king of Babylon, who will capture it.(LD) 29 The Babylonians who are attacking this city will come in and set it on fire; they will burn it down,(LE) along with the houses(LF) where the people aroused my anger by burning incense on the roofs to Baal and by pouring out drink offerings(LG) to other gods.(LH)

30 “The people of Israel and Judah have done nothing but evil in my sight from their youth;(LI) indeed, the people of Israel have done nothing but arouse my anger(LJ) with what their hands have made,(LK) declares the Lord. 31 From the day it was built until now, this city(LL) has so aroused my anger and wrath that I must remove(LM) it from my sight. 32 The people of Israel and Judah have provoked(LN) me by all the evil(LO) they have done—they, their kings and officials,(LP) their priests and prophets, the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem. 33 They turned their backs(LQ) to me and not their faces; though I taught(LR) them again and again, they would not listen or respond to discipline.(LS) 34 They set up their vile images(LT) in the house that bears my Name(LU) and defiled(LV) it. 35 They built high places for Baal in the Valley of Ben Hinnom(LW) to sacrifice their sons and daughters to Molek,(LX) though I never commanded—nor did it enter my mind(LY)—that they should do such a detestable(LZ) thing and so make Judah sin.(MA)

36 “You are saying about this city, ‘By the sword, famine and plague(MB) it will be given into the hands of the king of Babylon’; but this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: 37 I will surely gather(MC) them from all the lands where I banish them in my furious anger(MD) and great wrath; I will bring them back to this place and let them live in safety.(ME) 38 They will be my people,(MF) and I will be their God. 39 I will give them singleness(MG) of heart and action, so that they will always fear(MH) me and that all will then go well for them and for their children after them. 40 I will make an everlasting covenant(MI) with them: I will never stop doing good to them, and I will inspire(MJ) them to fear me, so that they will never turn away from me.(MK) 41 I will rejoice(ML) in doing them good(MM) and will assuredly plant(MN) them in this land with all my heart and soul.(MO)

42 “This is what the Lord says: As I have brought all this great calamity(MP) on this people, so I will give them all the prosperity I have promised(MQ) them. 43 Once more fields will be bought(MR) in this land of which you say, ‘It is a desolate(MS) waste, without people or animals, for it has been given into the hands of the Babylonians.’ 44 Fields will be bought for silver, and deeds(MT) will be signed, sealed and witnessed(MU) in the territory of Benjamin, in the villages around Jerusalem, in the towns of Judah and in the towns of the hill country, of the western foothills and of the Negev,(MV) because I will restore(MW) their fortunes,[m] declares the Lord.”
