20 “Go up to Lebanon, and cry out,
And lift up your voice in Bashan;
Cry from Abarim,
For all your lovers are destroyed.
21 I spoke to you in your prosperity,
But you said, ‘I will not hear.’
(A)This has been your manner from your youth,
That you did not obey My voice.
22 The wind shall eat up all (B)your [a]rulers,
And your lovers shall go into captivity;
Surely then you will be ashamed and humiliated
For all your wickedness.
23 O inhabitant of Lebanon,
Making your nest in the cedars,
How gracious will you be when pangs come upon you,
Like (C)the pain of a woman in [b]labor?

Message to Coniah

24 As I live,” says the Lord, (D)“though [c]Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, (E)were the [d]signet on My right hand, yet I would pluck you off; 25 (F)and I will give you into the hand of those who seek your life, and into the hand of those whose face you fear—the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and the hand of the [e]Chaldeans. 26 (G)So I will cast you out, and your mother who bore you, into another country where you were not born; and there you shall die. 27 But to the land to which they desire to return, there they shall not return.

28 “Is this man [f]Coniah a despised, broken idol—
(H)A vessel in which is no pleasure?
Why are they cast out, he and his descendants,
And cast into a land which they do not know?
29 (I)O earth, earth, earth,
Hear the word of the Lord!
30 Thus says the Lord:
‘Write this man down as (J)childless,
A man who shall not prosper in his days;
For (K)none of his descendants shall prosper,
Sitting on the throne of David,
And ruling anymore in Judah.’ ”

The Branch of Righteousness

23 “Woe (L)to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of My pasture!” says the Lord. Therefore thus says the Lord God of Israel against the shepherds who feed My people: “You have scattered My flock, driven them away, and not attended to them. (M)Behold, I will attend to you for the evil of your doings,” says the Lord. “But (N)I will gather the remnant of My flock out of all countries where I have driven them, and bring them back to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase. I will set up (O)shepherds over them who will feed them; and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, nor shall they be lacking,” says the Lord.

“Behold, (P)the days are coming,” says the Lord,
“That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness;
A King shall reign and [g]prosper,
(Q)And execute [h]judgment and righteousness in the [i]earth.
(R)In His days Judah will be saved,
And Israel (S)will dwell safely;
Now (T)this is His name by which He will be called:

[j]THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

“Therefore, behold, (U)the days are coming,” says the Lord, “that they shall no longer say, ‘As the Lord lives who brought up the children of Israel from the land of Egypt,’ but, ‘As the Lord lives who brought up and led the descendants of the house of Israel from the north country (V)and from all the countries where I had driven them.’ And they shall dwell in their own (W)land.”

The Righteous Branch

23 “Woe to the shepherds(AC) who are destroying and scattering(AD) the sheep of my pasture!”(AE) declares the Lord. Therefore this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to the shepherds(AF) who tend my people: “Because you have scattered my flock(AG) and driven them away and have not bestowed care on them, I will bestow punishment on you for the evil(AH) you have done,” declares the Lord. “I myself will gather the remnant(AI) of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture,(AJ) where they will be fruitful and increase in number. I will place shepherds(AK) over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid(AL) or terrified, nor will any be missing,(AM)” declares the Lord.

“The days are coming,” declares the Lord,
“when I will raise up for David[d] a righteous Branch,(AN)
a King(AO) who will reign(AP) wisely
and do what is just and right(AQ) in the land.
In his days Judah will be saved
and Israel will live in safety.(AR)
This is the name(AS) by which he will be called:
    The Lord Our Righteous Savior.(AT)

“So then, the days are coming,”(AU) declares the Lord, “when people will no longer say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the Israelites up out of Egypt,’(AV) but they will say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the descendants of Israel up out of the land of the north and out of all the countries where he had banished them.’ Then they will live in their own land.”(AW)

31 (A)Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, [a]clamor, and (B)evil speaking be put away from you, (C)with all malice. 32 And (D)be kind to one another, tenderhearted, (E)forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

Walk in Love

Therefore(F) be imitators of God as dear (G)children. And (H)walk in love, (I)as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God (J)for a sweet-smelling aroma.

But fornication and all (K)uncleanness or (L)covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; (M)neither filthiness, nor (N)foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, (O)which are not fitting, but rather (P)giving of thanks. For [b]this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any (Q)inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not be (R)partakers with them.

Walk in Light

For you were once darkness, but now you are (S)light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for (T)the fruit of the [c]Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), 10 (U)finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. 11 And have (V)no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather [d]expose them. 12 (W)For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. 13 But (X)all things that are [e]exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. 14 Therefore He says:

(Y)“Awake, you who sleep,
Arise from the dead,
And Christ will give you light.”

Walk in Wisdom

15 (Z)See then that you walk [f]circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, 16 (AA)redeeming the time, (AB)because the days are evil.

17 (AC)Therefore do not be unwise, but (AD)understand (AE)what the will of the Lord is. 18 And (AF)do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another (AG)in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making (AH)melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 (AI)giving thanks always for all things to God the Father (AJ)in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 (AK)submitting to one another in the fear of [g]God.

31 Get rid of(A) all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.(B) 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another,(C) forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.(D) Follow God’s example,(E) therefore, as dearly loved children(F) and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us(G) and gave himself up for us(H) as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.(I)

But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality,(J) or of any kind of impurity, or of greed,(K) because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk(L) or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.(M) For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a person is an idolater(N)—has any inheritance(O) in the kingdom of Christ and of God.[a](P) Let no one deceive you(Q) with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath(R) comes on those who are disobedient.(S) Therefore do not be partners with them.

For you were once(T) darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light(U) (for the fruit(V) of the light consists in all goodness,(W) righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord.(X) 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness,(Y) but rather expose them. 12 It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light(Z) becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. 14 This is why it is said:

“Wake up, sleeper,(AA)
    rise from the dead,(AB)
and Christ will shine on you.”(AC)

15 Be very careful, then, how you live(AD)—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity,(AE) because the days are evil.(AF) 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.(AG) 18 Do not get drunk on wine,(AH) which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit,(AI) 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit.(AJ) Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks(AK) to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Sign of Two Baskets of Figs

24 The (A)Lord showed me, and there were two baskets of figs set before the temple of the Lord, after Nebuchadnezzar (B)king of Babylon had carried away captive (C)Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and the princes of Judah with the craftsmen and smiths, from Jerusalem, and had brought them to Babylon. One basket had very good figs, like the figs that are first ripe; and the other basket had very bad figs which could not be eaten, they were so (D)bad. Then the Lord said to me, “What do you see, Jeremiah?”

And I said, “Figs, the good figs, very good; and the bad, very bad, which cannot be eaten, they are so bad.”

Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: ‘Like these good figs, so will I [a]acknowledge those who are carried away captive from Judah, whom I have sent out of this place for their own good, into the land of the Chaldeans. For I will set My eyes on them for good, and (E)I will bring them back to this land; (F)I will build them and not pull them down, and I will plant them and not pluck them up. Then I will give them (G)a heart to know Me, that I am the Lord; and they shall be (H)My people, and I will be their God, for they shall return to Me (I)with their whole heart.

‘And as the bad (J)figs which cannot be eaten, they are so bad’—surely thus says the Lord—‘so will I give up Zedekiah the king of Judah, his princes, the (K)residue of Jerusalem who remain in this land, and (L)those who dwell in the land of Egypt. I will deliver them to (M)trouble into all the kingdoms of the earth, for their harm, (N)to be a reproach and a byword, a taunt and a curse, in all places where I shall drive them. 10 And I will send the sword, the famine, and the pestilence among them, till they are [b]consumed from the land that I gave to them and their fathers.’ ”

Two Baskets of Figs

24 After Jehoiachin[a](A) son of Jehoiakim king of Judah and the officials, the skilled workers and the artisans of Judah were carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Lord showed me two baskets of figs(B) placed in front of the temple of the Lord. One basket had very good figs, like those that ripen early;(C) the other basket had very bad(D) figs, so bad they could not be eaten.

Then the Lord asked me, “What do you see,(E) Jeremiah?”

“Figs,” I answered. “The good ones are very good, but the bad ones are so bad they cannot be eaten.”

Then the word of the Lord came to me: “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Like these good figs, I regard as good the exiles from Judah, whom I sent(F) away from this place to the land of the Babylonians.[b] My eyes will watch over them for their good, and I will bring them back(G) to this land. I will build(H) them up and not tear them down; I will plant(I) them and not uproot them. I will give them a heart to know(J) me, that I am the Lord. They will be my people,(K) and I will be their God, for they will return(L) to me with all their heart.(M)

“‘But like the bad(N) figs, which are so bad they cannot be eaten,’ says the Lord, ‘so will I deal with Zedekiah(O) king of Judah, his officials(P) and the survivors(Q) from Jerusalem, whether they remain in this land or live in Egypt.(R) I will make them abhorrent(S) and an offense to all the kingdoms of the earth, a reproach and a byword,(T) a curse[c](U) and an object of ridicule, wherever I banish(V) them. 10 I will send the sword,(W) famine(X) and plague(Y) against them until they are destroyed from the land I gave to them and their ancestors.(Z)’”

Could This Be the Christ?

25 Now some of them from Jerusalem said, “Is this not He whom they seek to (A)kill? 26 But look! He speaks boldly, and they say nothing to Him. (B)Do the rulers know indeed that this is [a]truly the Christ? 27 (C)However, we know where this Man is from; but when the Christ comes, no one knows where He is from.”

28 Then Jesus cried out, as He taught in the temple, saying, (D)“You both know Me, and you know where I am from; and (E)I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me (F)is true, (G)whom you do not know. 29 [b]But (H)I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me.”

30 Therefore (I)they sought to take Him; but (J)no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come. 31 And (K)many of the people believed in Him, and said, “When the Christ comes, will He do more signs than these which this Man has done?”

Jesus and the Religious Leaders

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things concerning Him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take Him. 33 Then Jesus said [c]to them, (L)“I shall be with you a little while longer, and then I (M)go to Him who sent Me. 34 You (N)will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you (O)cannot come.”

35 Then the Jews said among themselves, “Where does He intend to go that we shall not find Him? Does He intend to go to (P)the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? 36 What is this thing that He said, ‘You will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you cannot come’?”

The Promise of the Holy Spirit

37 (Q)On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, (R)“If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 (S)He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, (T)out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 (U)But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those [d]believing in Him would receive; for the [e]Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet (V)glorified.

Who Is He?

40 Therefore [f]many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, “Truly this is (W)the Prophet.” 41 Others said, “This is (X)the Christ.”

But some said, “Will the Christ come out of Galilee? 42 (Y)Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, (Z)where David was?” 43 So (AA)there was a division among the people because of Him. 44 Now (AB)some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

Rejected by the Authorities

45 Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why have you not brought Him?”

46 The officers answered, (AC)“No man ever spoke like this Man!”

47 Then the Pharisees answered them, “Are you also deceived? 48 Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him? 49 But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.”

50 Nicodemus (AD)(he who came to [g]Jesus [h]by night, being one of them) said to them, 51 (AE)“Does our law judge a man before it hears him and knows what he is doing?”

52 They answered and said to him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search and look, for (AF)no prophet [i]has arisen out of Galilee.”

Division Over Who Jesus Is

25 At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?(A) 26 Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities(B) really concluded that he is the Messiah?(C) 27 But we know where this man is from;(D) when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.”

28 Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts,(E) cried out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from.(F) I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true.(G) You do not know him, 29 but I know him(H) because I am from him and he sent me.”(I)

30 At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him,(J) because his hour had not yet come.(K) 31 Still, many in the crowd believed in him.(L) They said, “When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs(M) than this man?”

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.

33 Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time,(N) and then I am going to the one who sent me.(O) 34 You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.”(P)

35 The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered(Q) among the Greeks,(R) and teach the Greeks? 36 What did he mean when he said, ‘You will look for me, but you will not find me,’ and ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”(S)

37 On the last and greatest day of the festival,(T) Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.(U) 38 Whoever believes(V) in me, as Scripture has said,(W) rivers of living water(X) will flow from within them.”[a](Y) 39 By this he meant the Spirit,(Z) whom those who believed in him were later to receive.(AA) Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.(AB)

40 On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.”(AC)

41 Others said, “He is the Messiah.”

Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee?(AD) 42 Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants(AE) and from Bethlehem,(AF) the town where David lived?” 43 Thus the people were divided(AG) because of Jesus. 44 Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.(AH)

Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders

45 Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”

46 “No one ever spoke the way this man does,”(AI) the guards replied.

47 “You mean he has deceived you also?”(AJ) the Pharisees retorted. 48 “Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him?(AK) 49 No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them.”

50 Nicodemus,(AL) who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, 51 “Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?”

52 They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.”(AM)
