20 Go up to Lebanon and cry out,
And raise your voice in Bashan;
Cry out also from (A)Abarim,
For all your (B)lovers have been crushed.
21 I spoke to you in your prosperity;
But (C)you said, ‘I will not listen!’
(D)This has been your way (E)from your youth,
That you have not obeyed My voice.
22 The wind will sweep away all your (F)shepherds,
And your (G)lovers will go into captivity;
Then you will certainly be (H)ashamed and humiliated
Because of all your wickedness.
23 You who live in Lebanon,
Nested in the cedars,
How you will groan when sharp pains come on you,
(I)Pain like a woman in childbirth!

24 “As I live,” declares the Lord, “even if [a](J)Coniah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah were a (K)signet ring on My right hand, yet I would pull [b]you [c]off; 25 and I will (L)hand you over to those who are seeking your life, yes, to those of whom you are frightened, that is, to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and the Chaldeans. 26 I will (M)hurl you and your (N)mother who gave birth to you into another country where you were not born, and there you will die. 27 But as for the land to which they long to return, they will not return to it.

28 Is this man Coniah a despised, shattered jar?
Or is he an (O)undesirable vessel?
Why have he and his descendants been (P)hurled out
And cast into a (Q)land that they had not known?
29 (R)O land, land, land,
Hear the word of the Lord!

30 This is what the Lord says:

‘Write this man down as (S)childless,
A man who will (T)not prosper in his days;
For no man among his (U)descendants will prosper
Sitting on the throne of David
Or ruling again in Judah.’”

The Coming Messiah: the Righteous Branch

23 (V)Woe to the shepherds who are causing the (W)sheep of My pasture to (X)perish and are scattering them!” declares the Lord. Therefore this is what the Lord, the God of Israel says concerning the shepherds who are [d]tending My people: “You have scattered My flock and driven them away, and have not been concerned about them; behold, I am going to (Y)call you to account for the (Z)evil of your deeds,” declares the Lord. “Then I Myself will (AA)gather the remnant of My flock out of all the countries where I have driven them, and bring them back to their pasture, and they will be fruitful and multiply. I will also raise up (AB)shepherds over them and they will [e]tend them; and they will (AC)not be afraid any longer, nor be terrified, (AD)nor will any be missing,” declares the Lord.

“Behold, the (AE)days are coming,” declares the Lord,
“When I will raise up for David a righteous [f](AF)Branch;
And He will (AG)reign as king and [g]act wisely
And (AH)do justice and righteousness in the land.
In His days Judah will be saved,
And (AI)Israel will live securely;
And this is His (AJ)name by which He will be called,
‘The (AK)Lord Our Righteousness.’

(AL)Therefore behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when they will no longer say, ‘As the Lord lives, who brought the sons of Israel up from the land of Egypt,’ (AM)but, ‘As the Lord lives, who (AN)brought up and led the descendants of the household of Israel back from the north land and from all the countries where I had driven them.’ Then they will live on their own soil.”

23 You who live in ‘Lebanon,[a](L)

24 “As surely as I live,” declares the Lord, “even if you, Jehoiachin[b](N) son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, were a signet ring(O) on my right hand, I would still pull you off. 25 I will deliver(P) you into the hands of those who want to kill you, those you fear—Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and the Babylonians.[c] 26 I will hurl(Q) you and the mother(R) who gave you birth into another country, where neither of you was born, and there you both will die. 27 You will never come back to the land you long to return(S) to.”

28 Is this man Jehoiachin(T) a despised, broken pot,(U)

Why will he and his children be hurled(V) out,

    none will sit on the throne(AB) of David

The Righteous Branch

23 “Woe to the shepherds(AC) who are destroying and scattering(AD) the sheep of my pasture!”(AE) declares the Lord. Therefore this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to the shepherds(AF) who tend my people: “Because you have scattered my flock(AG) and driven them away and have not bestowed care on them, I will bestow punishment on you for the evil(AH) you have done,” declares the Lord. “I myself will gather the remnant(AI) of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture,(AJ) where they will be fruitful and increase in number. I will place shepherds(AK) over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid(AL) or terrified, nor will any be missing,(AM)” declares the Lord.

“The days are coming,” declares the Lord,
    “when I will raise up for David[d] a righteous Branch,(AN)
a King(AO) who will reign(AP) wisely
    and do what is just and right(AQ) in the land.
In his days Judah will be saved
    and Israel will live in safety.(AR)
This is the name(AS) by which he will be called:
    The Lord Our Righteous Savior.(AT)

“So then, the days are coming,”(AU) declares the Lord, “when people will no longer say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the Israelites up out of Egypt,’(AV) but they will say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the descendants of Israel up out of the land of the north and out of all the countries where he had banished them.’ Then they will live in their own land.”(AW)

31 (A)All bitterness, wrath, anger, [a]clamor, and slander must be (B)removed from you, along with all (C)malice. 32 (D)Be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving each other, (E)just as God in Christ also has forgiven [b]you.

Be Imitators of God

(F)Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; and (G)walk in love, just as Christ also (H)loved [c]you and (I)gave Himself up for us, an (J)offering and a sacrifice to God [d]as a (K)fragrant aroma.

But (L)sexual immorality [e]or any impurity or greed must not even be mentioned among you, as is proper among [f]saints; and there must be no (M)filthiness [g]or foolish talk, or vulgar joking, which (N)are not fitting, but rather (O)giving of thanks. For this you know with certainty, that (P)no sexually immoral or [h]impure or greedy person, which [i]amounts to an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom (Q)of Christ and God.

(R)See that no one deceives you with empty words, for because of these things (S)the wrath of God comes upon (T)the [j]sons of disobedience. Therefore do not become (U)partners with them; for (V)you were once (W)darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as (X)children of light (for (Y)the fruit of the light consists in all (Z)goodness, righteousness, and truth), 10 [k](AA)as you try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 (AB)Do not participate in the useless (AC)deeds of (AD)darkness, but instead even (AE)expose them; 12 for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. 13 But all things become visible (AF)when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light. 14 For this reason [l]it says,

(AG)Awake, sleeper,
And arise from (AH)the dead,
And Christ (AI)will shine on you.”

15 So then, [m]be careful how you (AJ)walk, not (AK)as unwise people but as wise, 16 [n](AL)making the most of your time, because (AM)the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but (AN)understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And (AO)do not get drunk with wine, [o]in which there is (AP)debauchery, but be (AQ)filled with the Spirit, 19 (AR)speaking to [p]one another in (AS)psalms and (AT)hymns and spiritual (AU)songs, (AV)singing and making melody with your hearts to the Lord; 20 (AW)always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to our (AX)God and Father; 21 [q](AY)and subject yourselves to one another in the [r](AZ)fear of Christ.

31 Get rid of(A) all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.(B) 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another,(C) forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.(D) Follow God’s example,(E) therefore, as dearly loved children(F) and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us(G) and gave himself up for us(H) as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.(I)

But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality,(J) or of any kind of impurity, or of greed,(K) because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk(L) or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.(M) For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a person is an idolater(N)—has any inheritance(O) in the kingdom of Christ and of God.[a](P) Let no one deceive you(Q) with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath(R) comes on those who are disobedient.(S) Therefore do not be partners with them.

For you were once(T) darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light(U) (for the fruit(V) of the light consists in all goodness,(W) righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord.(X) 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness,(Y) but rather expose them. 12 It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light(Z) becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. 14 This is why it is said:

“Wake up, sleeper,(AA)
    rise from the dead,(AB)
    and Christ will shine on you.”(AC)

15 Be very careful, then, how you live(AD)—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity,(AE) because the days are evil.(AF) 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.(AG) 18 Do not get drunk on wine,(AH) which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit,(AI) 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit.(AJ) Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks(AK) to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Baskets of Figs and the Returnees

24 After (A)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had taken into exile Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and the officials of Judah with the craftsmen and metalworkers from Jerusalem and had brought them to Babylon, the Lord showed me: behold, two (B)baskets of figs placed before the temple of the Lord. One basket had very good figs, like (C)first-ripe figs, and the other basket had (D)very bad figs which could not be eaten due to rottenness. Then the Lord said to me, “(E)What do you see, Jeremiah?” And I said, “Figs: the good figs are very good, and the bad ones, very bad, which cannot be eaten due to rottenness.”

Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: ‘Like these good figs, so I will regard (F)as good the captives of Judah, whom I have sent out of this place into the land of the Chaldeans. For I will set My eyes on them for good, and I will (G)bring them back to this land; and I will (H)build them up and not overthrow them, and I will (I)plant them and not uproot them. I will also give them a (J)heart to know Me, for I am the Lord; and they will be (K)My people, and I will be their God, for they will (L)return to Me wholeheartedly.

‘But like the (M)bad figs which cannot be eaten due to rottenness,’ indeed, this is what the Lord says, ‘so will I give up (N)Zedekiah king of Judah and his officials, and the (O)remnant of Jerusalem who remain in this land, and the ones who live in the land of (P)Egypt. I will (Q)make them an object of terror and an evil for all the kingdoms of the earth, as a (R)disgrace and a proverb, a taunt and a (S)curse in all the places where I will scatter them. 10 And I will send the (T)sword, the famine, and the plague upon them until they are eliminated from the land which I gave to them and their forefathers.’”

Two Baskets of Figs

24 After Jehoiachin[a](A) son of Jehoiakim king of Judah and the officials, the skilled workers and the artisans of Judah were carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Lord showed me two baskets of figs(B) placed in front of the temple of the Lord. One basket had very good figs, like those that ripen early;(C) the other basket had very bad(D) figs, so bad they could not be eaten.

Then the Lord asked me, “What do you see,(E) Jeremiah?”

“Figs,” I answered. “The good ones are very good, but the bad ones are so bad they cannot be eaten.”

Then the word of the Lord came to me: “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Like these good figs, I regard as good the exiles from Judah, whom I sent(F) away from this place to the land of the Babylonians.[b] My eyes will watch over them for their good, and I will bring them back(G) to this land. I will build(H) them up and not tear them down; I will plant(I) them and not uproot them. I will give them a heart to know(J) me, that I am the Lord. They will be my people,(K) and I will be their God, for they will return(L) to me with all their heart.(M)

“‘But like the bad(N) figs, which are so bad they cannot be eaten,’ says the Lord, ‘so will I deal with Zedekiah(O) king of Judah, his officials(P) and the survivors(Q) from Jerusalem, whether they remain in this land or live in Egypt.(R) I will make them abhorrent(S) and an offense to all the kingdoms of the earth, a reproach and a byword,(T) a curse[c](U) and an object of ridicule, wherever I banish(V) them. 10 I will send the sword,(W) famine(X) and plague(Y) against them until they are destroyed from the land I gave to them and their ancestors.(Z)’”

25 So some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, “Is this man not the one whom they are seeking to kill? 26 And yet look, He is speaking publicly, and they are saying nothing to Him. (A)The rulers do not really know that this is the [a]Christ, do they? 27 However, (B)we know where this man is from; but when the Christ comes, no one knows where He is from.” 28 Then Jesus cried out in the temple, (C)teaching and saying, (D)You both know Me and you know where I am from; and (E)I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know. 29 (F)I do know Him, because (G)I am from Him, and (H)He sent Me.” 30 So they (I)were seeking to arrest Him; and yet no one laid a hand on Him, because His (J)hour had not yet come. 31 But (K)many of the crowd believed in Him; and they were saying, “(L)When the [b]Christ comes, He will not perform more [c](M)signs than those which this man has done, will He?”

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering these things about Him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent (N)officers to (O)arrest Him. 33 Therefore Jesus said, (P)For a little while longer I am going to be with you, and then (Q)I am going to Him who sent Me. 34 (R)You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.” 35 (S)The Jews then said to one another, “(T)Where does this man intend to go that we will not find Him? He does not intend to go to (U)the Dispersion among (V)the Greeks, and teach the Greeks, does He? 36 What is this statement that He said, (W)You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come’?”

37 Now on (X)the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, (Y)If anyone is thirsty, [d]let him come to Me and drink. 38 The one who believes in Me, (Z)as the Scripture said, ‘[e]From his innermost being will flow rivers of (AA)living water.’” 39 But this He said (AB)in reference to the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for (AC)the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet (AD)glorified.

People’s Division over Jesus

40 Some of the people therefore, after they heard these words, were saying, “This truly is (AE)the Prophet.” 41 Others were saying, “This is the [f]Christ.” But others were saying, “(AF)Surely the [g]Christ is not coming from Galilee, is He? 42 Has the Scripture not said that the Christ comes from (AG)the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” 43 So (AH)a dissension occurred in the crowd because of Him. 44 And (AI)some of them wanted to arrest Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

45 The (AJ)officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?” 46 The (AK)officers answered, “(AL)Never has a man spoken in this way!” 47 The Pharisees then replied to them, “(AM)You have not been led astray too, have you? 48 (AN)Not one of (AO)the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he? 49 But this crowd that does not know the Law is accursed!” 50 (AP)Nicodemus (the one who came to Him before, being one of them) *said to them, 51 (AQ)Our Law does not judge the person unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?” 52 They answered and said to him, “(AR)You are not from Galilee as well, are you? Examine the Scriptures, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee.” 53 [[[h]And everyone went to his home.

Division Over Who Jesus Is

25 At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?(A) 26 Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities(B) really concluded that he is the Messiah?(C) 27 But we know where this man is from;(D) when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.”

28 Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts,(E) cried out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from.(F) I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true.(G) You do not know him, 29 but I know him(H) because I am from him and he sent me.”(I)

30 At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him,(J) because his hour had not yet come.(K) 31 Still, many in the crowd believed in him.(L) They said, “When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs(M) than this man?”

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.

33 Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time,(N) and then I am going to the one who sent me.(O) 34 You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.”(P)

35 The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered(Q) among the Greeks,(R) and teach the Greeks? 36 What did he mean when he said, ‘You will look for me, but you will not find me,’ and ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”(S)

37 On the last and greatest day of the festival,(T) Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.(U) 38 Whoever believes(V) in me, as Scripture has said,(W) rivers of living water(X) will flow from within them.”[a](Y) 39 By this he meant the Spirit,(Z) whom those who believed in him were later to receive.(AA) Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.(AB)

40 On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.”(AC)

41 Others said, “He is the Messiah.”

Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee?(AD) 42 Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants(AE) and from Bethlehem,(AF) the town where David lived?” 43 Thus the people were divided(AG) because of Jesus. 44 Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.(AH)

Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders

45 Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”

46 “No one ever spoke the way this man does,”(AI) the guards replied.

47 “You mean he has deceived you also?”(AJ) the Pharisees retorted. 48 “Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him?(AK) 49 No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them.”

50 Nicodemus,(AL) who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, 51 “Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?”

52 They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.”(AM)

53 Then they all went home,
