Jeremiah and the Religious Leader Pashhur

20 Now Pashhur the religious leader, the son of Immer, was the head leader in the house of the Lord. When he heard Jeremiah saying these things, Pashhur had Jeremiah the man of God beaten. Then he put him in chains at the upper Benjamin Gate by the house of the Lord. On the next day, when Pashhur set Jeremiah free from the chains, Jeremiah said to him, “The Lord does not call you Pashhur, but Fear Everywhere. For the Lord says, ‘See, I am going to make you a fear to yourself and to all your friends. They will fall by the sword of those who hate them while you look on. I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon. And he will carry them away in chains to Babylon and will kill them with the sword. I will give over all the riches of this city, all that its people have worked for, and all its things of much worth. Even all the riches of the kings of Judah I will give to those who hate them. They will take their things, and take hold of them, and carry them to Babylon. And you, Pashhur, and all who live in your house will be taken away in chains. You will go to Babylon, and there you will die, and there you will be buried, you and all your friends to whom you have told lies.’”

Jeremiah’s Complaint to the Lord

O Lord, You have lied to me and I was fooled. You are stronger than I, and have had power over me. I have been laughed at all day. Everyone makes fun of me. For whenever I speak, I cry out. I tell of fighters and destroyers. For the Word of the Lord has become a shame and a cause of laughing at me all day long. But if I say, “I will not remember Him or speak any more in His name,” then in my heart it is like a burning fire shut up in my bones. I am tired of holding it in, and I cannot do that. 10 For I have heard many speaking in secret, saying, “Fear and trouble is on every side! Speak against him! Yes, let us speak against him!” All my trusted friends, watching for my fall, say, “It may be that he will be fooled. Then we can get power over him and punish him.” 11 But the Lord is with me like a powerful one who causes fear. So those who make it hard for me will fall and not have power over me. They will be put to much shame, because their plans have not gone well. Their shame will last forever and will not be forgotten. 12 O Lord of All, You test those who are right and good. You see the mind and the heart. Let me see You punish them, for I have given my cause to You. 13 Sing to the Lord! Praise the Lord! For He has taken the soul of the one in need from the hand of the sinful.

14 Cursed is the day when I was born! Let the day not be honored when my mother gave birth to me! 15 Cursed be the man who brought the news to my father, saying, “A baby boy has been born to you!” and made him very happy. 16 Let that man be like the cities which the Lord destroyed without pity. Let him hear a cry in the morning and a call of danger at noon. 17 For he did not kill me before I was born, so that my mother’s body would have been my grave. 18 Why was I ever born to see trouble and sorrow, and spend my days in shame?

Jerusalem to Be Taken

21 This is the word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord when King Zedekiah sent to him Pashhur the son of Malchijah, and Zephaniah the religious leader, the son of Maaseiah, saying, “Will you speak to the Lord about us? For King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon is making war against us. It may be that the Lord will do something for us like He did in times past, and make him leave us.”

Then Jeremiah said to them, “Say this to Zedekiah: ‘The Lord God of Israel says, “See, I will turn against you the objects of war you are using to fight with against the king of Babylon and the Babylonians who are gathered outside the wall to shut you in. And I will bring them into the center of this city. I Myself will fight against you with My hand out and with a strong arm, in much anger. I will kill both man and animal in this city. They will die of a bad disease. After this,” says the Lord, “I will give over Zedekiah king of Judah, his servants, and the people who were not killed in this city by the disease, the sword, and hunger. I will give them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of those who hate them, and into the hand of those who want to kill them. And he will kill them with the sword. He will not let them live or have pity for them.”’

“Also tell the people, ‘The Lord says, “See, I set before you the way of life and the way of death. He who lives in this city will die by the sword and by hunger and by disease. But he who goes out and gives himself up to the Babylonians whose armies shut you in will live, he will at least have his life. 10 For I have set My face against this city for trouble and not for good,” says the Lord. “It will be given to the king of Babylon, and he will burn it with fire.”’

Words against Judah

11 “Then say to those of the house of the king of Judah, ‘Hear the Word of the Lord, 12 O house of David, the Lord says, “Do what is right every morning. Take the person who has been robbed away from the one who has made it hard for him. So My anger will not go out like fire and burn with no one to put it out, because of the sinful things you have done.

13 “See, I am against you, O you who live in the valley, O rock of the plain,” says the Lord, “you who say, ‘Who will come down against us? Or who will come into our houses?’ 14 I will punish you for what has come of what you have done,” says the Lord. “I will start a fire among your trees, and it will destroy all that is around it.”’”

Jeremiah’s Words to the Kings of Judah

22 The Lord says, “Go down to the house of the king of Judah, and speak this word there. Say, ‘Hear the Word of the Lord, O king of Judah, who sits on David’s throne, you and your servants and your people who come through these gates. The Lord says, “Do what is right and fair and good, and take the one who has been robbed away from the power of the one who has made it hard for him. Do not hurt or do wrong to the stranger, the one whose parents have died, or the woman whose husband has died. And do not kill those who are not guilty in this place. For if you will obey this word, then kings will come through the gates of this house and sit on the throne of David. They will be in war-wagons and on horses, together with their servants and their people. But if you will not obey these words, I promise by Myself,” says the Lord, “that this house will be destroyed.”’” For the Lord says about the house of the king of Judah: “You are like Gilead to Me, or like the top of Lebanon. Yet I will be sure to make you like a desert, like cities without people. I will send destroyers against you, each with his things for fighting. And they will cut down your best cedar trees and throw them on the fire. Many nations will pass by this city, and they will say to one another, ‘Why has the Lord done such a thing to this great city?’ And they will answer, ‘Because they did not keep the agreement of the Lord their God. They worshiped other gods and served them.’”

Words about Shallum

10 Do not cry for the one who is dead or have sorrow for him. But cry all the time for the one who goes away, for he will never return or see the land of his birth again. 11 For the Lord says about Shallum the son of Josiah, king of Judah, who ruled in the place of Josiah his father, and who left this place: “He will never return. 12 He will die in the place where they took him, and he will not see this land again.”

Words about Jehoiakim

13 “It is bad for him who builds his house by wrong-doing, and his upper rooms by not being fair, who has his neighbor serve him for nothing and does not pay him, 14 who says, ‘I will build myself a big house with large upper rooms. I will cut out its windows, cover it with cedar and color it bright red.’ 15 Do you become a king by trying to build better houses of cedar? Did not your father eat and drink? He did what was right and fair and good, so all went well with him. 16 He spoke strong words in the cause of the poor and those in need, and so all went well. Is not that what it means to know Me?” says the Lord. 17 “But your eyes and heart are set only on what you can get by wrong-doing, and on killing those who are not guilty, and on making it hard for people and on hurting others.” 18 So the Lord says about Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, “They will not cry in sorrow for him, saying, ‘It is bad, my brother!’ or, ‘It is bad, my sister!’ They will not cry in sorrow for him, saying, ‘O lord!’ or, ‘O, how great he was!’ 19 He will be buried like they bury a donkey, pulled away and thrown out on the other side of the gates of Jerusalem.

The Future of Jerusalem

20 “Go up to Lebanon and cry out. And let your voice be heard in Bashan. Cry out from Abarim also. For all your lovers have been destroyed. 21 I spoke to you when things were going well for you, but you said, ‘I will not listen!’ This has been your way since you were young. You have not obeyed My voice. 22 The wind will take away all your shepherds, and your lovers will be taken away in chains. Then you will be ashamed and troubled because of all your sin. 23 O you people of Lebanon, who make your nest among the cedars, how you will cry inside yourselves when pain comes upon you! It will be pain like a woman giving birth.”

Words against Coniah

24 “As I live,” says the Lord, “even if Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, were a marking ring on My right hand, I would still pull you off. 25 I will give you over to those who want to kill you, to those whom you fear. I will give you to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and to the Babylonians. 26 I will throw you and your mother who gave birth to you into another country where you were not born, and there you will die. 27 You will want to return to this land again but you will not return.” 28 Is this man Coniah a hated, broken jar? Is he a pot that no one cares for? Why have he and his children been thrown out into a land that they had not known? 29 O land, land, land, hear the Word of the Lord! 30 The Lord says, “Write this man down as one who has no children, a man who will not do well in his days. For none of his children or children’s children will do well sitting on the throne of David or ruling again in Judah.”

Jeremiah and Pashhur

20 When the priest Pashhur son of Immer,(A) the official(B) in charge of the temple of the Lord, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things, he had Jeremiah the prophet beaten(C) and put in the stocks(D) at the Upper Gate of Benjamin(E) at the Lord’s temple. The next day, when Pashhur released him from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, “The Lord’s name(F) for you is not Pashhur, but Terror on Every Side.(G) For this is what the Lord says: ‘I will make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends; with your own eyes(H) you will see them fall by the sword of their enemies. I will give(I) all Judah into the hands of the king of Babylon, who will carry(J) them away to Babylon or put them to the sword. I will deliver all the wealth(K) of this city into the hands of their enemies—all its products, all its valuables and all the treasures of the kings of Judah. They will take it away(L) as plunder and carry it off to Babylon. And you, Pashhur, and all who live in your house will go into exile to Babylon. There you will die and be buried, you and all your friends to whom you have prophesied(M) lies.’”

Jeremiah’s Complaint

You deceived[a](N) me, Lord, and I was deceived[b];
    you overpowered(O) me and prevailed.
I am ridiculed(P) all day long;
    everyone mocks(Q) me.
Whenever I speak, I cry out
    proclaiming violence and destruction.(R)
So the word of the Lord has brought me
insult and reproach(S) all day long.
But if I say, “I will not mention his word
or speak anymore in his name,”(T)
his word is in my heart like a fire,(U)
a fire shut up in my bones.
I am weary of holding it in;(V)
    indeed, I cannot.
10 I hear many whispering,
    “Terror(W) on every side!
    Denounce(X) him! Let’s denounce him!”
All my friends(Y)
are waiting for me to slip,(Z) saying,
“Perhaps he will be deceived;
then we will prevail(AA) over him
and take our revenge(AB) on him.”

11 But the Lord(AC) is with me like a mighty warrior;
so my persecutors(AD) will stumble and not prevail.(AE)
They will fail and be thoroughly disgraced;(AF)
their dishonor will never be forgotten.
12 Lord Almighty, you who examine the righteous
and probe the heart and mind,(AG)
let me see your vengeance(AH) on them,
for to you I have committed(AI) my cause.

13 Sing(AJ) to the Lord!
    Give praise to the Lord!
He rescues(AK) the life of the needy
from the hands of the wicked.(AL)

14 Cursed be the day I was born!(AM)
May the day my mother bore me not be blessed!
15 Cursed be the man who brought my father the news,
who made him very glad, saying,
“A child is born to you—a son!”
16 May that man be like the towns(AN)
    the Lord overthrew without pity.
May he hear wailing(AO) in the morning,
    a battle cry at noon.
17 For he did not kill me in the womb,(AP)
with my mother as my grave,
    her womb enlarged forever.
18 Why did I ever come out of the womb(AQ)
    to see trouble(AR) and sorrow
and to end my days in shame?(AS)

God Rejects Zedekiah’s Request

21 The word came to Jeremiah from the Lord when King Zedekiah(AT) sent to him Pashhur(AU) son of Malkijah and the priest Zephaniah(AV) son of Maaseiah. They said: “Inquire(AW) now of the Lord for us because Nebuchadnezzar[c](AX) king of Babylon(AY) is attacking us. Perhaps the Lord will perform wonders(AZ) for us as in times past so that he will withdraw from us.”

But Jeremiah answered them, “Tell Zedekiah, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I am about to turn(BA) against you the weapons of war that are in your hands, which you are using to fight the king of Babylon and the Babylonians[d] who are outside the wall besieging(BB) you. And I will gather them inside this city. I myself will fight(BC) against you with an outstretched hand(BD) and a mighty arm(BE) in furious anger and in great wrath. I will strike(BF) down those who live in this city—both man and beast—and they will die of a terrible plague.(BG) After that, declares the Lord, I will give Zedekiah(BH) king of Judah, his officials and the people in this city who survive the plague,(BI) sword and famine, into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon(BJ) and to their enemies(BK) who want to kill them.(BL) He will put them to the sword;(BM) he will show them no mercy or pity or compassion.’(BN)

“Furthermore, tell the people, ‘This is what the Lord says: See, I am setting before you the way of life(BO) and the way of death. Whoever stays in this city will die by the sword, famine or plague.(BP) But whoever goes out and surrenders(BQ) to the Babylonians who are besieging you will live; they will escape with their lives.(BR) 10 I have determined to do this city harm(BS) and not good, declares the Lord. It will be given into the hands(BT) of the king of Babylon, and he will destroy it with fire.’(BU)

11 “Moreover, say to the royal house(BV) of Judah, ‘Hear the word of the Lord. 12 This is what the Lord says to you, house of David:

“‘Administer justice(BW) every morning;
rescue from the hand of the oppressor(BX)
the one who has been robbed,
or my wrath will break out and burn like fire(BY)
because of the evil(BZ) you have done—
burn with no one to quench(CA) it.
13 I am against(CB) you, Jerusalem,
you who live above this valley(CC)
on the rocky plateau, declares the Lord
you who say, “Who can come against us?
    Who can enter our refuge?”(CD)
14 I will punish you as your deeds(CE) deserve,
    declares the Lord.
I will kindle a fire(CF) in your forests(CG)
that will consume everything around you.’”

Judgment Against Wicked Kings

22 This is what the Lord says: “Go down to the palace of the king(CH) of Judah and proclaim this message there: ‘Hear(CI) the word of the Lord to you, king of Judah, you who sit on David’s throne(CJ)—you, your officials and your people who come through these gates.(CK) This is what the Lord says: Do what is just(CL) and right. Rescue from the hand of the oppressor(CM) the one who has been robbed. Do no wrong or violence to the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow,(CN) and do not shed innocent blood(CO) in this place. For if you are careful to carry out these commands, then kings(CP) who sit on David’s throne will come through the gates of this palace, riding in chariots and on horses, accompanied by their officials and their people. But if you do not obey(CQ) these commands, declares the Lord, I swear(CR) by myself that this palace will become a ruin.’”

For this is what the Lord says about the palace of the king of Judah:

“Though you are like Gilead(CS) to me,
    like the summit of Lebanon,(CT)
I will surely make you like a wasteland,(CU)
    like towns not inhabited.
I will send destroyers(CV) against you,
    each man with his weapons,
and they will cut(CW) up your fine cedar beams
and throw them into the fire.(CX)

“People from many nations will pass by this city and will ask one another, ‘Why has the Lord done such a thing to this great city?’(CY) And the answer will be: ‘Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord their God and have worshiped and served other gods.(CZ)’”

10 Do not weep for the dead(DA) king or mourn(DB) his loss;
rather, weep bitterly for him who is exiled,
because he will never return(DC)
nor see his native land again.

11 For this is what the Lord says about Shallum[e](DD) son of Josiah, who succeeded his father as king of Judah but has gone from this place: “He will never return. 12 He will die(DE) in the place where they have led him captive; he will not see this land again.”

13 “Woe(DF) to him who builds(DG) his palace by unrighteousness,
    his upper rooms by injustice,
making his own people work for nothing,
not paying(DH) them for their labor.
14 He says, ‘I will build myself a great palace(DI)
    with spacious upper rooms.’
So he makes large windows in it,
    panels it with cedar(DJ)
    and decorates it in red.(DK)

15 “Does it make you a king
to have more and more cedar?
Did not your father have food and drink?
He did what was right and just,(DL)
so all went well(DM) with him.
16 He defended the cause of the poor and needy,(DN)
    and so all went well.
Is that not what it means to know(DO) me?”
    declares the Lord.
17 “But your eyes and your heart
are set only on dishonest gain,(DP)
on shedding innocent blood(DQ)
    and on oppression and extortion.”(DR)

18 Therefore this is what the Lord says about Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah:

“They will not mourn(DS) for him:
‘Alas, my brother! Alas, my sister!’
They will not mourn for him:
‘Alas, my master! Alas, his splendor!’
19 He will have the burial(DT) of a donkey—
    dragged away and thrown(DU)
    outside the gates of Jerusalem.”

20 “Go up to Lebanon and cry out,(DV)
let your voice be heard in Bashan,(DW)
cry out from Abarim,(DX)
for all your allies(DY) are crushed.
21 I warned you when you felt secure,(DZ)
but you said, ‘I will not listen!’
This has been your way from your youth;(EA)
    you have not obeyed(EB) me.
22 The wind(EC) will drive all your shepherds(ED) away,
and your allies(EE) will go into exile.
Then you will be ashamed and disgraced(EF)
    because of all your wickedness.
23 You who live in ‘Lebanon,[f](EG)
who are nestled in cedar buildings,
how you will groan when pangs come upon you,
pain(EH) like that of a woman in labor!

24 “As surely as I live,” declares the Lord, “even if you, Jehoiachin[g](EI) son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, were a signet ring(EJ) on my right hand, I would still pull you off. 25 I will deliver(EK) you into the hands of those who want to kill you, those you fear—Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and the Babylonians.[h] 26 I will hurl(EL) you and the mother(EM) who gave you birth into another country, where neither of you was born, and there you both will die. 27 You will never come back to the land you long to return(EN) to.”

28 Is this man Jehoiachin(EO) a despised, broken pot,(EP)
    an object no one wants?
Why will he and his children be hurled(EQ) out,
cast into a land(ER) they do not know?
29 O land,(ES) land, land,
hear the word of the Lord!
30 This is what the Lord says:
“Record this man as if childless,(ET)
a man who will not prosper(EU) in his lifetime,
for none of his offspring(EV) will prosper,
none will sit on the throne(EW) of David
    or rule anymore in Judah.”

This letter is from Paul, a missionary of Jesus Christ. God has sent me to tell that He has promised life that lasts forever through Christ Jesus. I am writing to you, Timothy. You are my much-loved son. May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord give you His loving-favor and loving-kindness and peace.

Timothy’s Special Gift

I thank God for you. I pray for you night and day. I am working for God the way my early fathers worked. My heart says I am free from sin. When I remember your tears, it makes me want to see you. That would fill me with joy. I remember your true faith. It is the same faith your grandmother Lois had and your mother Eunice had. I am sure you have that same faith also.

For this reason, I ask you to keep using the gift God gave you. It came to you when I laid my hands on you and prayed that God would use you. For God did not give us a spirit of fear. He gave us a spirit of power and of love and of a good mind. Do not be ashamed to tell others about what our Lord said, or of me here in prison. I am here because of Jesus Christ. Be ready to suffer for preaching the Good News and God will give you the strength you need. He is the One Who saved us from the punishment of sin. He is the One Who chose us to do His work. It is not because of anything we have done. But it was His plan from the beginning that He would give us His loving-favor through Christ Jesus. 10 We know about it now because of the coming of Jesus Christ, the One Who saves. He put a stop to the power of death and brought life that never dies which is seen through the Good News. 11 I have been chosen to be a missionary and a preacher and a teacher of this Good News. 12 For this reason, I am suffering. But I am not ashamed. I know the One in Whom I have put my trust. I am sure He is able to keep safe that which I have trusted to Him until the day He comes again. 13 Keep all the things I taught you. They were given to you in the faith and love of Jesus Christ. 14 Keep safe that which He has trusted you with by the Holy Spirit Who lives in us.

Onesiphorus Was Faithful

15 I am sure you have heard that all the Christians in the countries of Asia have turned away from me. Phygelus and Hermogenes turned away also. 16 Onesiphorus was not ashamed of me in prison. He came often to comfort me. May the Lord show loving-kindness to his family. 17 When he came to Rome, he looked everywhere until he found me. 18 You know what a help he was to me in Ephesus. When the Lord comes again, may He show loving-kindness to Onesiphorus.

Paul, an apostle(A) of Christ Jesus by the will of God,(B) in keeping with the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus,(C)

To Timothy,(D) my dear son:(E)

Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.(F)

Thanksgiving

I thank God,(G) whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience,(H) as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers.(I) Recalling your tears,(J) I long to see you,(K) so that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith,(L) which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice(M) and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.

Appeal for Loyalty to Paul and the Gospel

For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.(N) For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid,(O) but gives us power,(P) love and self-discipline. So do not be ashamed(Q) of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner.(R) Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel,(S) by the power of God. He has saved(T) us and called(U) us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done(V) but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, 10 but it has now been revealed(W) through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus,(X) who has destroyed death(Y) and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 11 And of this gospel(Z) I was appointed(AA) a herald and an apostle and a teacher.(AB) 12 That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame,(AC) because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard(AD) what I have entrusted to him until that day.(AE)

13 What you heard from me,(AF) keep(AG) as the pattern(AH) of sound teaching,(AI) with faith and love in Christ Jesus.(AJ) 14 Guard(AK) the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.(AL)

Examples of Disloyalty and Loyalty

15 You know that everyone in the province of Asia(AM) has deserted me,(AN) including Phygelus and Hermogenes.

16 May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus,(AO) because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed(AP) of my chains.(AQ) 17 On the contrary, when he was in Rome, he searched hard for me until he found me. 18 May the Lord grant that he will find mercy from the Lord on that day!(AR) You know very well in how many ways he helped me(AS) in Ephesus.(AT)
