Israel Accused of Apostasy

The word of the Lord came to me: “Go and announce directly to Jerusalem that this is what the Lord says:

I remember the loyalty of your youth,(A)
your love as a bride—
how you followed Me in the wilderness,
in a land not sown.
Israel was holy to the Lord,(B)
the firstfruits of His harvest.(C)
All who ate of it found themselves guilty;(D)
disaster came on them.”
This is the Lord’s declaration.

Hear the word of the Lord, house of Jacob
and all families of the house of Israel.
This is what the Lord says:

What fault did your fathers find in Me(E)
that they went so far from Me,
followed worthless idols,(F)
and became worthless themselves?(G)
They stopped asking, “Where is the Lord(H)
who brought us from the land of Egypt,
who led us through the wilderness,(I)
through a land of deserts and ravines,
through a land of drought and darkness,[a]
a land no one traveled through
and where no one lived?”
I brought you to a fertile land(J)
to eat its fruit and bounty,
but after you entered, you defiled My land;(K)
you made My inheritance(L) detestable.
The priests quit asking, “Where is the Lord?”
The experts in the law no longer knew Me,(M)
and the rulers(N) rebelled against Me.
The prophets prophesied by[b] Baal(O)
and followed useless idols.(P)

Therefore, I will bring a case against you again.
This is the Lord’s declaration.
I will bring a case against your children’s children.(Q)
10 Cross over to Cyprus[c](R) and take a look.
Send someone to Kedar(S) and consider carefully;
see if there has ever been anything like this:
11 Has a nation ever exchanged its gods?(T)
(But they were not gods!(U))
Yet My people have exchanged their[d] Glory
for useless idols.(V)
12 Be horrified at this, heavens;(W)
be shocked and utterly appalled.
This is the Lord’s declaration.

13 For My people have committed a double evil:
They have abandoned Me,(X)
the fountain of living water,(Y)
and dug cisterns for themselves,
cracked cisterns that cannot hold water.(Z)

Consequences of Apostasy

14 Is Israel a slave?
Was he born into slavery?[e]
Why else has he become a prey?
15 The young lions have roared at him;(AA)
they have roared loudly.
They have laid waste his land.(AB)
His cities are in ruins, without inhabitants.
16 The men of Memphis and Tahpanhes(AC)
have also broken your skull.
17 Have you not brought this on yourself(AD)
by abandoning the Lord your God
while He was leading you along the way?
18 Now what will you gain
by traveling along the way to Egypt(AE)
to drink the waters of the Nile?[f]
What will you gain
by traveling along the way to Assyria(AF)
to drink the waters of the Euphrates?(AG)
19 Your own evil will discipline you;(AH)
your own apostasies will reprimand you.
Think it over and see how evil and bitter(AI) it is
for you to abandon the Lord your God
and to have no fear of Me.
This is the declaration
of the Lord God of Hosts.

20 For long ago I[g] broke your yoke;(AJ)
I[h] tore off your chains.
You insisted, “I will not serve!”
On every high hill
and under every green tree(AK)
you lie down like a prostitute.(AL)

21 I planted you, a choice vine(AM)
from the very best seed.
How then could you turn into
a degenerate, foreign vine?(AN)

22 Even if you wash with lye
and use a great amount of soap,(AO)
the stain of your sin is still in front of Me.(AP)
This is the Lord God’s declaration.
23 How can you protest, “I am not defiled;
I have not followed the Baals”?(AQ)
Look at your behavior in the valley;
acknowledge what you have done.(AR)
You are a swift young camel
twisting and turning on her way,
24 a wild donkey(AS) at home[i] in the wilderness.
She sniffs the wind in the heat of her desire.
Who can control her passion?
All who look for her will not become tired;
they will find her in her mating season.[j]
25 Keep your feet from going bare
and your throat from thirst.
But you say, “It’s hopeless;(AT)
I love strangers,(AU)
and I will continue to follow them.”

26 Like the shame of a thief when he is caught,
so the house of Israel has been put to shame.(AV)
They, their kings, their officials,
their priests, and their prophets(AW)
27 say to a tree, “You are my father,”
and to a stone, “You gave birth to me.”
For they have turned their back to Me
and not their face,(AX)
yet in their time of disaster(AY) they beg,
“Rise up and save us!”
28 But where are your gods you made for yourself?
Let them rise up and save you(AZ)
in your time of disaster if they can,
for your gods are as numerous as your cities, Judah.

Judgment Deserved

29 Why do you bring a case against Me?(BA)
All of you have rebelled against Me.
This is the Lord’s declaration.
30 I have struck down your children in vain;
they would not accept discipline.(BB)
Your own sword has devoured your prophets(BC)
like a ravaging lion.
31 Evil generation,
pay attention to the word of the Lord!
Have I been a wilderness to Israel
or a land of dense darkness?(BD)
Why do My people claim,
“We will go where we want;[k]
we will no longer come to You”?
32 Can a young woman forget her jewelry(BE)
or a bride her wedding sash?
Yet My people have forgotten Me(BF)
for countless days.
33 How skillfully you pursue love;
you also teach evil women your ways.
34 Moreover, your skirts are stained
with the blood of the innocent poor.(BG)
You did not catch them breaking and entering.(BH)
But in spite of all these things
35 you claim, “I am innocent.(BI)
His anger is sure to turn away from me.”
But I will certainly judge you
because you have said, “I have not sinned.”(BJ)
36 How unstable you are,(BK)
constantly changing your ways!
You will be put to shame by Egypt(BL)
just as you were put to shame by Assyria.
37 Moreover, you will be led out from here
with your hands on your head(BM)
since the Lord has rejected those you trust;(BN)
you will not succeed even with their help.[l]

God’s people abandon their God

The Lord’s word came to me:
Go and proclaim to the people of Jerusalem,
The Lord proclaims:
I remember your first love,[a]
    your devotion as a young bride,
    how you followed me in the wilderness,
    in an unplanted land.
Israel was devoted to the Lord,
    the early produce of the harvest.
Whoever ate from it became guilty;
    disaster overtook them,
        declares the Lord.
Listen to the Lord’s word,
    people of Judah,
    all you families of the Israelite household.

This is what the Lord says:

What wrong did your ancestors find in me
    that made them wander so far?
They pursued what was worthless
    and became worthless.
They didn’t ask,
    “Where’s the Lord who brought us up from the land of Egypt,
        who led us through the wilderness,
        in a land of deserts and ravines,
        in a land of drought and darkness,
        in a land of no return,
            where no one survives?”
I brought you into a land of plenty,
    to enjoy its gifts and goodness,
        but you ruined my land;
        you disgraced my heritage.
The priests didn’t ask,
    “Where’s the Lord?”
Those responsible for the Instruction didn’t know me;
    the leaders rebelled against me;
    the prophets spoke in the name of Baal,
        going after what has no value.
That is why I will take you to court
    and charge even your descendants,
        declares the Lord.
10 Look to the west as far as the shores of Cyprus
    and to the east as far as the land of Kedar.
Ask anyone there:
    Has anything this odd ever taken place?
11     Has a nation switched gods,
        though they aren’t really gods at all?
Yet my people have exchanged their glory
    for what has no value.
12 Be stunned at such a thing, you heavens;
    shudder and quake,
        declares the Lord.
13 My people have committed two crimes:
    They have forsaken me, the spring of living water.
    And they have dug wells, broken wells that can’t hold water.

14 Is Israel a slave,
    a servant by birth?
    If not, why then has he become prey?
15 Lions roar at him; they growl.
    They destroy his land
        and make his towns desolate
        until nothing is left.
16 As well, the people of Memphis and Tahpanhes
    lay open your scalp.
17 Haven’t you brought this on yourself
    by abandoning the Lord your God,
        who has directed your paths?
18 So why take the path to Egypt
    to drink water from the Nile?
Why travel the path to Assyria
    to drink water from the Euphrates?
19 Your wrongdoing will punish you.
    Your acts of unfaithfulness will find you out.
Don’t you understand how terribly bitter
    it is to abandon the Lord your God
    and not fear me?
        declares the Lord of heavenly forces.
20 Long ago I broke your yoke;
    I shattered your chains.
    But even then you said, “I won’t serve you.”
On every high hill and under every lush tree,
    you have acted like a prostitute.
21 Yet it was I who planted you, a precious vine of fine quality;
    how could you turn into a wild vine
        and become good for nothing?
22 Even though you scrub yourself with soap or strong powder,
    the stain of your sin is still before me,
        declares the Lord God.
23 How can you say,
    “I’m not dirty;
    I haven’t gone after Baals.”
Look what you have done in the valley;
    consider what you have done there.
You are like a frenzied young camel,
    racing around,
24     a wild donkey in the wilderness,
    lustfully sniffing the wind.
Who can restrain such passion?
    Those who desire her need not give up;
    with little effort they will find her in heat.
25 Don’t run about until your feet are blistered
    and your throat is parched.
But you say, “What’s the use?
    I have fallen in love with foreign gods,
        and I must pursue them.”
26 As a thief is ashamed when caught in his tracks,
    so the people of Israel are ashamed—
        their kings, officials, priests, and prophets—
27     when they say to a piece of wood, “You are my father,”
        and to a stone, “You gave me birth.”
They have turned their backs to me
    and not their faces.
Yet in their time of trouble they say,
    “Arise and save us!”
28 Where are the gods
        you have made for yourselves?
    Let’s see if they will come through for you in your time of trouble.
    You have as many gods, Judah,
        as you have towns.
29 Why would you bring charges against me?
You have all rebelled against me,
        declares the Lord.
30 I have disciplined your children in vain;
    they have rejected my correction.
You have devoured your prophets
    like a hungry lion.
31 People of this generation, listen closely to the Lord’s word:
Have I been a wasteland to Israel
    or a land of dense darkness?
Why then do my people say,
    “We have wandered far away;
    we’ll come to you no longer”?
32 Does a young woman forget her jewelry
    or a bride her wedding dress?
Yet you have forgotten me days without end!
33     So skilled are you at pursuing lovers[b]
        that you instruct even the most wicked.[c]
34 Your garments are stained
    with the blood of the innocent poor,
        even though you didn’t catch them
        breaking and entering.
Yet, despite all this,[d] 35 you still insist,
    “I’m innocent;
        as a result he will turn his anger away from me.”
Because you claim not to have sinned,
    I will pass judgment against you.
36 You change sides so casually!
    But Egypt will shame you
    no less than Assyria.
37 From there you will go out
    with your hands on your heads,
        because the Lord has rejected those you rely on;
        they won’t help you.
