The Sign of the Broken Flask
19 Thus says the Lord: “Go and get a potter’s earthen flask, and take some of the elders of the people and some of the elders of the priests. 2 And go out to (A)the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, which is by the entry of the Potsherd Gate; and proclaim there the words that I will tell you, 3 (B)and say, ‘Hear the word of the Lord, O kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem. Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Behold, I will bring such a catastrophe on this place, that whoever hears of it, his ears will (C)tingle.
4 “Because they (D)have forsaken Me and made this an alien place, because they have burned incense in it to other gods whom neither they, their fathers, nor the kings of Judah have known, and have filled this place with (E)the blood of the innocents 5 (F)(they have also built the high places of Baal, to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings to Baal, (G)which I did not command or speak, nor did it come into My mind), 6 therefore behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord, “that this place shall no more be called Tophet or (H)the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter. 7 And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place, (I)and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies and by the hands of those who seek their lives; their (J)corpses I will give as meat for the birds of the heaven and for the beasts of the earth. 8 I will make this city (K)desolate and a hissing; everyone who passes by it will be astonished and hiss because of all its plagues. 9 And I will cause them to eat the (L)flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and everyone shall eat the flesh of his friend in the siege and in the desperation with which their enemies and those who seek their lives shall drive them to despair.” ’
10 (M)“Then you shall break the flask in the sight of the men who go with you, 11 and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: (N)“Even so I will break this people and this city, as one breaks a potter’s vessel, which cannot be [a]made whole again; and they shall (O)bury them in Tophet till there is no place to bury. 12 Thus I will do to this place,” says the Lord, “and to its inhabitants, and make this city like Tophet. 13 And the houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah shall be defiled (P)like the place of Tophet, because of all the houses on whose (Q)roofs they have burned incense to all the host of heaven, and (R)poured out drink offerings to other gods.” ’ ”
14 Then Jeremiah came from Tophet, where the Lord had sent him to prophesy; and he stood in (S)the court of the Lord’s house and said to all the people, 15 “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Behold, I will bring on this city and on all her towns all the doom that I have pronounced against it, because (T)they have stiffened their necks that they might not hear My words.’ ”

19 Así dijo Jehová: Ve y compra una vasija de barro del alfarero, y lleva contigo de los ancianos del pueblo, y de los ancianos de los sacerdotes; 2 y saldrás al valle del hijo de Hinom,(A) que está a la entrada de la puerta oriental, y proclamarás allí las palabras que yo te hablaré. 3 Dirás, pues: Oíd palabra de Jehová, oh reyes de Judá, y moradores de Jerusalén. Así dice Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel: He aquí que yo traigo mal sobre este lugar, tal que a todo el que lo oyere, le retiñan los oídos. 4 Porque me dejaron, y enajenaron este lugar, y ofrecieron en él incienso a dioses ajenos, los cuales no habían conocido ellos, ni sus padres, ni los reyes de Judá; y llenaron este lugar de sangre de inocentes. 5 Y edificaron lugares altos a Baal, para quemar con fuego a sus hijos en holocaustos al mismo Baal;(B) cosa que no les mandé, ni hablé, ni me vino al pensamiento. 6 Por tanto, he aquí vienen días, dice Jehová, que este lugar no se llamará más Tofet, ni valle del hijo de Hinom, sino Valle de la Matanza. 7 Y desvaneceré el consejo de Judá y de Jerusalén en este lugar, y les haré caer a espada delante de sus enemigos, y en las manos de los que buscan sus vidas; y daré sus cuerpos para comida a las aves del cielo y a las bestias de la tierra. 8 Pondré a esta ciudad por espanto y burla; todo aquel que pasare por ella se asombrará, y se burlará sobre toda su destrucción. 9 Y les haré comer la carne de sus hijos y la carne de sus hijas, y cada uno comerá la carne de su amigo, en el asedio y en el apuro con que los estrecharán sus enemigos y los que buscan sus vidas.
10 Entonces quebrarás la vasija ante los ojos de los varones que van contigo, 11 y les dirás: Así ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos: Así quebrantaré a este pueblo y a esta ciudad, como quien quiebra una vasija de barro, que no se puede restaurar más; y en Tofet se enterrarán, porque no habrá otro lugar para enterrar. 12 Así haré a este lugar, dice Jehová, y a sus moradores, poniendo esta ciudad como Tofet. 13 Las casas de Jerusalén, y las casas de los reyes de Judá, serán como el lugar de Tofet, inmundas, por todas las casas sobre cuyos tejados ofrecieron incienso a todo el ejército del cielo, y vertieron libaciones a dioses ajenos.
14 Y volvió Jeremías de Tofet, adonde le envió Jehová a profetizar, y se paró en el atrio de la casa de Jehová y dijo a todo el pueblo: 15 Así ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel: He aquí, yo traigo sobre esta ciudad y sobre todas sus villas todo el mal que hablé contra ella; porque han endurecido su cerviz para no oír mis palabras.

19 Thus says the Lord: Go and buy a potter’s earthen bottle, and take some of the elders of the people and some of the elders of the priests. 2 Then go out to the Valley of Ben Hinnom, which is by the entry of the Potsherd Gate, and proclaim there the words that I will tell you, 3 and say: Hear the word of the Lord, O kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem. Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel: I will bring such disaster upon this place, at which whoever hears of it, his ears shall tingle. 4 Because they have forsaken Me and have profaned this place by making offerings in it to other gods whom neither they, their fathers, nor the kings of Judah have known, and have filled this place with the blood of the innocent, 5 and have built the high places of Baal to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings to Baal, which I did not command or decree, nor did it come into My mind— 6 therefore, surely the days are coming, says the Lord, when this place shall no more be called Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter.
7 I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place, and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hands of those who seek their lives. And their corpses I will give to be food for the fowl of the heaven and for the beasts of the earth. 8 I will make this city desolate and a hissing. Everyone who passes by will be astonished and hiss because of all the wounds. 9 I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and everyone will eat the flesh of his friend in the siege and distress, with which their enemies and those who seek their lives will distress them.
10 Then you will break the bottle in the sight of the men that go with you, 11 and say to them: Thus says the Lord of Hosts: Even so I will break this people and this city, as one breaks a potter’s vessel that cannot be made whole again; and they will bury them in Topheth until there is no other place to bury. 12 Thus I will do to this place and to the inhabitants, says the Lord, and even make this city as Topheth. 13 And the houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be defiled as the place of Topheth, because of all the houses upon whose roofs they have burned incense to all the host of heaven and have poured out drink offerings to other gods.
14 Then Jeremiah came from Topheth, where the Lord had sent him to prophesy. And he stood in the court of the house of the Lord and said to all the people: 15 Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel: I am about to bring upon this city and upon all her towns all the disaster that I have pronounced against it, because they have stiffened their necks so that they might not heed My words.
